There are four main types of precipitation: rain, which falls when warm; sleet, which forms when raindrops freeze into ice pellets before falling; snow, which forms when water vapor condenses into ice crystals due to cold air; and hail, which forms when raindrops are pushed high into the atmosphere and freeze. Rainfall has been measured for thousands of years using a rain gauge, which is important for farmers to know rainfall amounts for the year.
