The moon's surface has light and dark colored areas visible from telescopes. Large craters formed from impacts with space objects, and there are also large, flat dark areas called maria that appear smooth. The maria were formed when huge impacts caused lava to fill the impacted areas, and after cooling the lava gave the maria their dark, smooth appearance, though early observers mistakenly thought they were seas.
