Twitter: A Simple Guide to How and Why it is Beneficial to Public Relations Professionals By Meghan Athnos
      What is                      ? Twitter is a social networking site that enables users to communicate through text-based posts of up to 140 characters. Since its launch in 2006, Twitter is now home to over 100 million users worldwide.
Twitter Terms to Know Tweets- status updates. @Replies- you can direct a Tweet at a specific Twitter user. Intended to make communication between users easier. #Hashtags- Ideal for “Trending Topics”. Join the world-wide conversation. DM- direct message. Ability to send private messages.
Why is Twitter Beneficial to PR Professionals? Keeping others informed Monitoring others Activism Educate!
Keep Others Informed! Keep those who follow you informed on your current activity, thoughts, etc. If you are representing an organization, Twitter is a great tool to keep others “in the know” about what is going on inside and outside of that organization.
Monitor with Twitter Twitter allows users to monitor what others are saying. Hashtags (#example) allow users to search what others are saying about their organization. Search.twitter allows for easy access to others recent tweets Monitor and respond! Twitter allows users to respond to what people are saying, in a more timely fashion than other media outlets.
Activism Twitter allows users to be ACTIVE! If something negative is being said about your organization, users can be active and take a stand. Activism through Twitter can often solve problems before they snowball.
A PR Tool How? Conversation engagement: users can become a part of the social media conversation. Again, helps with monitoring and activism. Promotion! Promote products, services, and ideas from/by your organization.
Educate! Educate others on your organization. Keep the public informed about your organization, special promotions, or any other interesting information that normally wouldn’t be shared.
Quick Step Guide to Getting Started Create a username! Search and “follow” as many PR related accounts as possible. Observing others’ Tweets related to PR will help you get started. Get active! Start your Twitter presence! Remember, it’s extremely beneficial to have a strong presence from the beginning.

  • 2. What is ? Twitter is a social networking site that enables users to communicate through text-based posts of up to 140 characters. Since its launch in 2006, Twitter is now home to over 100 million users worldwide.
  • 3. Twitter Terms to Know Tweets- status updates. @Replies- you can direct a Tweet at a specific Twitter user. Intended to make communication between users easier. #Hashtags- Ideal for “Trending Topics”. Join the world-wide conversation. DM- direct message. Ability to send private messages.
  • 4. Why is Twitter Beneficial to PR Professionals? Keeping others informed Monitoring others Activism Educate!
  • 5. Keep Others Informed! Keep those who follow you informed on your current activity, thoughts, etc. If you are representing an organization, Twitter is a great tool to keep others “in the know” about what is going on inside and outside of that organization.
  • 6. Monitor with Twitter Twitter allows users to monitor what others are saying. Hashtags (#example) allow users to search what others are saying about their organization. Search.twitter allows for easy access to others recent tweets Monitor and respond! Twitter allows users to respond to what people are saying, in a more timely fashion than other media outlets.
  • 7. Activism Twitter allows users to be ACTIVE! If something negative is being said about your organization, users can be active and take a stand. Activism through Twitter can often solve problems before they snowball.
  • 8. A PR Tool How? Conversation engagement: users can become a part of the social media conversation. Again, helps with monitoring and activism. Promotion! Promote products, services, and ideas from/by your organization.
  • 9. Educate! Educate others on your organization. Keep the public informed about your organization, special promotions, or any other interesting information that normally wouldn’t be shared.
  • 10. Quick Step Guide to Getting Started Create a username! Search and “follow” as many PR related accounts as possible. Observing others’ Tweets related to PR will help you get started. Get active! Start your Twitter presence! Remember, it’s extremely beneficial to have a strong presence from the beginning.
