TRP - Television Rating Point.
TRP - Target rating point.
TRP is known as Television Rating Point. It shows the
rating of the TV channel and the serial viewed most.
Thakur College Of Science & Commerce,Mumbai
People watching TV and we heard about the TRP of
channel or programme like the TRP of channel is
increasing day by day and so on.
Do you know how to calculate the TRP of a TV channel
as well as shows running on a channel?
Various factors are there that define the TRP of a TV
channel or programme.
TRP is a well known parameter for a Television.
Thakur College Of Science & Commerce,Mumbai
What is TRP?
 TRP is a Television Rating Point. It is the tool that tells us which channel
and the programmed is viewed most or it indicates the popularity of a TV
channel or a programme.
 It shows how many times people are watching a channel or a particular
programme .
 TRP enables the advertisers and investors to understand the mood of the
people.
 According to the TRP of a TV Channel or programme advertisers decide
where to display their advertisements and investors will decide about the
investment of the money.

INTAM and DART - TRP?
Do you know that TRP is calculated by Indian agencies
namely INTAM and DART?
INTAM is Indian Television Audience Measurement.
Earlier, DART that is Doordarshan Audience Research
Team was used to calculate these ratings as that time the
only channel available was only Doordarshan.
DART exists and is an agency which takes the TV viewing
pattern of rural people into consideration. They randomly
pick people and question them about the various channels
and TV programmes and also use electronic methods to get
the viewership statistics.
Thakur College Of Science & Commerce,Mumbai
What happens when TRP increases or decreases?

The increase or decrease in TRP of any programme directly affects the income
of that TV channel in which the programme is coming.
 Do you know that any TV channel like Sony, Star Plus, Z Channel etc. earn
money through advertisements?
 If suppose the TRP of a programme or channel is low which means that people
are watching it less so, advertisers will give less advertisements and pay less.
 If the TRP is high of the programme then more advertisements, advertisers
and money. So, we can say that TRP depends not only on the channel but the
programme as well.
 For example, if the TRP of a programme say Rising Star is higher than any
other programme then advertiser would like to give advertisements in that
programme and also pay more.
Thakur College Of Science & Commerce,Mumbai
What is TRP Rate?
 The TRP rate is one on which TRP of a TV channel is
calculated. TRP of any channel or programme depends upon
the programme that is displayed.
 It can be understood that when a film star arrives in a
program for the promotion of his movie, the TRP of that
programme increases automatically because people like to
see that film star more.
 So now you might have understood that the TRP is the
Television Rating Point, which helps in tracking the
popularity and viewers of any program or channel.

A number of factors distinguish the BARC India rating system.
 Transparency
BARC India follows the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting’s notification with regard to:
 Sample size: The minimum panel size is 20,000 reporting homes, and this number will rise by
10,000 homes every year until it reaches 50,000 reporting panel homes.
 Ownership: No broadcasting or advertising company will be allowed to hold more than 10% of
BARC’s shares.
 Audit: We subject ourselves to both external and internal audit.
 Advanced watermarking technology
BARC India uses an advanced, audience measurement technique - audio watermarking, to track
content through its broadcast cycle. This is a code inserted into the audio channel of the
television signal which transmits through the distribution platforms and cannot be, either
deleted or overwritten in the cryptographic family it adopts. This increases the integrity and
reliability of the data generated by BARC India’s ratings.
 Includes rural households in sample
In the first round, about 30% of the sample comprises rural households, at an all-India level.
Thakur College Of Science & Commerce,Mumbai
 Comprehensive reporting
BARC India’s system reports the following also:
 Time shifted viewing: Metrics of programs that are recorded and viewed later. We observe VOSDAL,
i.e. Viewed on Same Day as Live.
 Simulcast viewing: Details of programs broadcast simultaneously on more than one channels –
viewership of every individual channel can be reliably tracked.
 Viewing as per the New SEC (NCCS): Details as per the new classification based on the education of
Chief Wage Earner of the family and the number of durables owned by the home from a predefined
list of 11 durables.
 Advanced BAR-O-meters
The BAR-O-meters we place in our metered homes are compact and use the latest technology. They
have a 3rd-generation OLED display (being more easily visible, this facilitates interaction between
the viewer and the bar-o-meter) and an embedded SIM to automatically upload viewing data (tie-
ups with leading GSM operators ensure wide coverage). As they are indigenously manufactured,
they cost almost one-sixth the price of imported meters, which lets us deploy a lot more of them to
measure viewership.
 Platform agnostic
The BARC India system captures data about TV content consumed through any form of distribution
– Terrestrial, DTH , Analog Cable, Digital Cable and Digital.
 Compliance
BARC India has an audit mechanism in place to ensure its internal processes and Govt guidelines
are being followed.
Thakur College Of Science & Commerce,Mumbai
HOW BARC COLLECT DATA
 Audio Watermarking embeds audio watermarks in video content prior to upload and
broadcast
 These watermarks are not audible to the human ear, but can easily be detected and
decoded using dedicated hardware or software.
 The watermark is broadcast along with the content.
 As viewing details are recorded by the BAR-O-meters, so are the watermarks.
 The raw data is cleaned, merged with the channel, program, language and broadcast
schedule details. Universe Estimates are applied to get viewership data.
 This gives content owners unprecedented visibility into when and where their content is
broadcast, who has viewed it, etc.
 As the watermark is part of the content, any attempt to destroy or remove it will also ruin
the quality of the material in which it is embedded. This increases the integrity of the
data generated by BARC India’s ratings.

  • 5. INTAM and DART - TRP? Do you know that TRP is calculated by Indian agencies namely INTAM and DART? INTAM is Indian Television Audience Measurement. Earlier, DART that is Doordarshan Audience Research Team was used to calculate these ratings as that time the only channel available was only Doordarshan. DART exists and is an agency which takes the TV viewing pattern of rural people into consideration. They randomly pick people and question them about the various channels and TV programmes and also use electronic methods to get the viewership statistics. Thakur College Of Science & Commerce,Mumbai
  • 6. What happens when TRP increases or decreases?  The increase or decrease in TRP of any programme directly affects the income of that TV channel in which the programme is coming.  Do you know that any TV channel like Sony, Star Plus, Z Channel etc. earn money through advertisements?  If suppose the TRP of a programme or channel is low which means that people are watching it less so, advertisers will give less advertisements and pay less.  If the TRP is high of the programme then more advertisements, advertisers and money. So, we can say that TRP depends not only on the channel but the programme as well.  For example, if the TRP of a programme say Rising Star is higher than any other programme then advertiser would like to give advertisements in that programme and also pay more. • 7. What is TRP Rate?  The TRP rate is one on which TRP of a TV channel is calculated. TRP of any channel or programme depends upon the programme that is displayed.  It can be understood that when a film star arrives in a program for the promotion of his movie, the TRP of that programme increases automatically because people like to see that film star more.  So now you might have understood that the TRP is the Television Rating Point, which helps in tracking the popularity and viewers of any program or channel. • 21. A number of factors distinguish the BARC India rating system.  Transparency BARC India follows the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting’s notification with regard to:  Sample size: The minimum panel size is 20,000 reporting homes, and this number will rise by 10,000 homes every year until it reaches 50,000 reporting panel homes.  Ownership: No broadcasting or advertising company will be allowed to hold more than 10% of BARC’s shares.  Audit: We subject ourselves to both external and internal audit.  Advanced watermarking technology BARC India uses an advanced, audience measurement technique - audio watermarking, to track content through its broadcast cycle. This is a code inserted into the audio channel of the television signal which transmits through the distribution platforms and cannot be, either deleted or overwritten in the cryptographic family it adopts. This increases the integrity and reliability of the data generated by BARC India’s ratings.  Includes rural households in sample In the first round, about 30% of the sample comprises rural households, at an all-India level. Thakur College Of Science & Commerce,Mumbai
  • 22.  Comprehensive reporting BARC India’s system reports the following also:  Time shifted viewing: Metrics of programs that are recorded and viewed later. We observe VOSDAL, i.e. Viewed on Same Day as Live.  Simulcast viewing: Details of programs broadcast simultaneously on more than one channels – viewership of every individual channel can be reliably tracked.  Viewing as per the New SEC (NCCS): Details as per the new classification based on the education of Chief Wage Earner of the family and the number of durables owned by the home from a predefined list of 11 durables.  Advanced BAR-O-meters The BAR-O-meters we place in our metered homes are compact and use the latest technology. They have a 3rd-generation OLED display (being more easily visible, this facilitates interaction between the viewer and the bar-o-meter) and an embedded SIM to automatically upload viewing data (tie- ups with leading GSM operators ensure wide coverage). As they are indigenously manufactured, they cost almost one-sixth the price of imported meters, which lets us deploy a lot more of them to measure viewership.  Platform agnostic The BARC India system captures data about TV content consumed through any form of distribution – Terrestrial, DTH , Analog Cable, Digital Cable and Digital.  Compliance BARC India has an audit mechanism in place to ensure its internal processes and Govt guidelines are being followed. Thakur College Of Science & Commerce,Mumbai
  • 23. HOW BARC COLLECT DATA  Audio Watermarking embeds audio watermarks in video content prior to upload and broadcast  These watermarks are not audible to the human ear, but can easily be detected and decoded using dedicated hardware or software.  The watermark is broadcast along with the content.  As viewing details are recorded by the BAR-O-meters, so are the watermarks.  The raw data is cleaned, merged with the channel, program, language and broadcast schedule details. Universe Estimates are applied to get viewership data.  This gives content owners unprecedented visibility into when and where their content is broadcast, who has viewed it, etc.  As the watermark is part of the content, any attempt to destroy or remove it will also ruin the quality of the material in which it is embedded. This increases the integrity of the data generated by BARC India’s ratings. Thakur College Of Science & Commerce,Mumbai
