Tropical rainforest:
• Hot and wet throughout the year
• warm, wet forests with many tall trees
• Min. annual rainfall between
  175 cm and 200 cm
• poor soils due to the heavy raining
• The temperature ranges from 21°C to 45°C
• High relative humidity
• Equatorial climate
Location
• South and Central America
• Africa
• Asia
• Australia
                           Congo Basin

                                     South-east Asia
            Amazon Basin
EMERGENTS: Giant trees that are
much higher than the average
canopy height. It houses many birds
and insects.

CANOPY: The upper parts of the
trees. This leafy environment is full of
life in a tropical rainforest and
includes: insects, birds, reptiles,
mammals, and more.

UNDERSTORY: A dark, cool
environment under the leaves but
over the ground.

FOREST FLOOR: Teeming with animal
life, especially insects. The largest
animals in the rainforest generally
live here.
Plants in the rainforest
• 2/3 of the world’s plants
• 10km2 area contains 1,500 kinds of
flowering plants and 750 tree species
SPIDER RED-EYED
TOUCAN JAGUAR MONKEY TREE FROG GORILLA

PIRANHA PARROT BENGAL GIBBON VIPER
                   TIGER
Facts about rainforests
• we are losing 137 plant, animal and
insect species every single day due to
  rainforest deforestation.
• One-fifth of the world's fresh water is in
  the Amazon Basin.
• More than half of the world's estimated
10 million species of plants, animals
and insects live in the tropical
  rainforests.
• An area of a rainforest the size of a
football field is being destroyed each
  second.
• More than 2,000 tropical forest plants
have been identified by scientists as
  having anti-cancer properties.
• The trees of a tropical rainforest are so
densely packed that rain falling on the
canopy can take as long as 10
  minutes to reach the ground.
