This document discusses pleural disorders and describes pleural effusion, its causes, and diagnostic criteria. Pleural effusion occurs when there is an abnormal accumulation of fluid in the pleural cavity due to imbalances in vascular and lymphatic flow into and out of the pleural space. Effusions can be transudative or exudative based on their cause and composition. Diagnostic techniques for pleural effusion include chest x-rays, thoracentesis, and analysis of pleural fluid. Pneumothorax is also discussed and defined as the presence of air in the pleural space, which can cause lung collapse.
