Flatland by Edwin A. Abbott Essay
Flatland is a story of depth, and the lack there of. The tale of A. Square s ventures through Pointland,
Lineland and Spaceland ultimately reveal to him the possibilities of the seemingly impossible. In this
case, the impossibilities are the very existence of other dimensions, or worlds. His guide throughout
the journey, a god like figure who refers to itself as
Sphere , bestows upon A. Square the greatest gift he could hope for, knowledge. It is only after the
Sphere forcibly takes A. Square out of his dimension, however, that he is able to shrug off his
ignorance and accept the fact that what cannot be, can, and much of what he believed before is wrong.
When he sees first hand that a square can have depth simply by ... Show more content on

Flatland is a book which main purpose is to make the reader think; it raises many questions. Is there a
fourth, fifth, sixth, infinite dimensions? Logically, there should be. Just as there is a dimension zero, a
dimension one, a second and third dimension, should not there also be a fourth? The Sphere speaks to
A. Square of Geometrical Progression 1, 2, 4 and hints that it goes beyond even that (to 8). But of
course, A. Square cannot see that while he is still in his own realm. It is only after he enters the three
dimensional world that he can realize it fully. He then remarks rather quickly about how there should
be something else. He says to the Sphere that doubtless there is One above you who combines many
Spheres in One Supreme Existence, surpassing even the Solids of Spaceland (p. 102). He thinks
logically that why should it stop here? There has to be another more spacious space (p.102)
somewhere. The Sphere cannot answer the question A. Square so desperately seeks the answer for,
and the reason for this is explained in the foreword by Abbot. Something that does not exist cannot
even be realized. That is where the impossibility lies. People in Flatland are even incapable of
understanding the limitations of that view! The King of Lineland cannot understand something that his
mind will not allow to exist any better than the entity Pointland can think outside his prison of
thought. Another interesting part of the book is the way women are

Analyzing The Production Cycle Of A Salmon Farming Company
Introduction Financial market instruments are essential for hedging the occurring risks of business
corporations. There is a large market for financial instruments, such as the derivatives that are used to
hedge commodities, currencies, equities and interest rates. World exchanges (2014) reports about a
total amount of 22 Billion of Exchange Traded Derivatives contracts being in the market in 2013. This
essay attempts to determine the present risks by analysing the production cycle of a salmon farming
company, Loch Duart and to provide the possibilities to hedge these risk using derivatives. Company s
background Loch Duart is a salmon rearing company located in Sutherland, Scotland. (Loch Duart,
2014) This company was established in 1999 and has acquired Scotland s oldest salmon farming sites

(Loch Duart, 2014) Around 5,000 tonnes of salmon are produced yearly accounting for approximately
3% of the total Scottish annual salmon production. (Loch Duart, 2014) Salmon is distributed
throughout the UK and to overseas countries such as France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Lebanon,
South Africa, Switzerland, UAE, USA and Zimbabwe. (Loch Duart, 2014) Besides salmon Loch
Duart sells salmon viscera to CellsUnited, signing an agreement to supply up to 540 tonnes of salmon
viscera and heads. (Loch Duart, 2014) The feed for the salmon is delivered from EWOS, a Scottish
company. (Loch

The Problem Of The Viral Game Pokemon Go Essay
Introduction
Many times larger business engage in unintentionally advertising, or viral advertising, thus saving
money that can consequentially utilized for advertising to a specific market, market research, and the
actual advertisement placement. When someone uploads a video that goes viral on YouTube, Twitter,
Facebook, Instagram, or any other mainstream social media outlet, and the business is able to utilize
that video to springboard an advertising campaign hence, unintentional viral marketing. Yet sometimes
a viral sensation can help small or local businesses, such as in the case of the viral game Pokémon Go.
Many of the Poke stops are at geocache sites which many times are historic buildings, unique art, or
specialty shops. Does secondary unintentional viral marketing revive small businesses, or are the
financial effects such marketing short lived causing a potential financial crisis?
Statement of the Problem
Word of mouth or peer to peer advertising has gotten a high tech update over the years. As
smartphones, laptops, and tablets have become more affordable, advertisers have found new ways to
garner product awareness, product identity, and business awareness into the hands of virtually
everyone. Occasionally, there is marketing leak to small businesses which have been receiving an
increase in foot traffic due to viral game applications on smartphones.

Individualism In The House On Mango Street
Let your home be your mast and not your anchor, said Kahlil Gibran, exposing the unneeded focus on
materialism to keep people in a harsh cycle of poverty. Expressing an idea that materialistic should not
force stigma and should show individualism, Gibran provides insight into the bullying through goods.
In this way, he relates to Cisneros s ideas through the usage of a house as a metaphor for good created
feelings of shame. In Sandra Cisneros s House on Mango Street, Esperanza s contesting views on her
impoverished house demonstrate that she accepts her role in poverty, one of being left helpless and
exploited by callous bullies and one of shamed individualism. Using Esperanza s view of her house as
an unlikable symbol that deteriorates ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During one of Esperanza s wishful daydreams, she delineates what she wants to own, saying, A house
all to my own. With my porch and my pillow (Cisneros 43). Perpetuating my , Esperanza shows that
she wants her house to show that she is an individual who is not to be shamed by what she lives in.
This image of individualism is expanded through the stress on own . In a similar fashion, while
thinking about foreign neighborhoods, Esperanza thinks, All brown all around, we are safe. But watch
us drive into a neighborhood of another color and our knees go shakity shake and our car windows get
rolled up tight and our eyes look straight . Esperanza shows that she feels safe when there is all brown
all around , further emphasizing her point of being an individual. The usage of the home in this case
represents a flaw of Esperanza and how it is bad to be in a different home than her. Later, Cisneros
utilizes Esperanza s fantasy of her aspiration to own her house, One day I ll own my own house, but I
won t forget who I am or where I came from. Passing bums will ask, Can I come in? I ll offer them the
attic, ask them to stay, because I know how it is to be without a house . Her house acts as a
compassionate being, such as her dream is to be. It also represents her desire to remain sturdy and

Greenhouse Gases In Australia
Australia s annual greenhouse gas emissions have historically been steadily increasing. However, in
recent years this trend has stopped the emissions rate has steadied. The Australian nation has been
emitting in the range of 250,000 to 450,000 thousand metric tons greenhouse gases per year from
1990 to 2010. Data from 2008 to 2012 show the carbon dioxide emissions as a fraction of the total
greenhouse gas. This goes beyond the limit agreed in the Kyoto Protocol, and hence appropriate
measures need to be taken. Several possible solutions present itself in this scenario:
Carbon Taxes
Buy the necessary amount of carbon credits
Make mining process more efficient
Reduce coal mining overall
Alternative sources
Carbon tax is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The objective to this strategy is to boost industrial and commercial processes without having to be
concerned by the emissions of any greenhouse gas.
Another form of carbon credit trading applies to companies. If a company is having difficulties in
sticking to maximum allowable emissions amount, it can use its resources to invest in an emission
reduction project. This project will be one that produces carbon offsets, which he company may use to
cover the amount that was they could previously not. Efficiency at a power plant is determined by
energy conversion rate. This is rate is measured by the input energy source, in this case coal, in
proportion to the output, which is the power generated. The less fuel that is required for power
generation, the more efficient it is. Efficiency is very sensitive in relation to the amount of carbon
dioxide emitted. A single percentage increase in the efficiency of a coal fired power plant yields a 2
3% reduction in the carbon dioxide levels emitted by this plant. The power stations on the upper side
on the scale of efficiency may emit up to 40% less carbon dioxide than the average power stations
currently installed. The efficiency of power plant improvements include the most cost effective and
shortest lead time actions for reducing emissions from coal fired electricity. This is especially true in
developing and lower economy countries

John Bowlby and Maternal Deprivation Essay
John Bowlby and Maternal Deprivation
Bowlby believed that maternal behaviour was instinctive in humans as it appears to be in animals.
Mothers and their babies form an instinctive attachment to each other using genetically inherited skills
such as smiling, grasping, crying and so on. If a separation occurs between mother and infant within
the first few years of the child s life, Bowlby believed that the bond would be irreversibly broken,
leading to severe emotional consequences for the infant in later life. He referred to this as maternal
deprivation. Bowlby claimed that maternal deprivation had the following consequences:
1. Aggressiveness
5. Depression
2. Delinquency
6. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The recent debates about child abuse and the question of whether or not to remove at risk children
from their natural parents can be seen to be related to the idea of maternal deprivation. If Bowlby is
right, it may be better to leave such children with their parents the long term damage which could
result from maternal deprivation might be a more important consideration than the risk of abuse. On
the other hand, if Bowlby is wrong, children could be left in a potentially dangerous situation.
However, one of the major effects of Bowlby s claims was to direct greater attention to the child s
emotional and psychological needs, which weren t considered as important in the 1920 s and 30 s as
they are today.
Much of the evidence Bowlby uses to support his views comes from studies carried out in the 1950 s
and 60 s. The nature of the issues being investigated meant that controlled experiments couldn t be
carried out. It would not be possible to separate children from their mothers in an experiment! Because
control of variables was difficult, clear conclusions were difficult to draw. Other evidence from
psychoanalytic case studies or from animal studies must also be interpreted very carefully.
During the 1970 s Bowlby s view came under increasing criticism as a result of other studies of
varying degrees of maternal deprivation which

The Benefits Of Technology In The Work Environment
Technology is a tremendous benefit nowadays within the work environment. Each technological
advancement has been created in order to facilitate the work environment and has led us to become
more efficient with the things we do. Because of it, the office environment is no longer the same as
yesterday; it has made the general convenience of our personal lives more accessible in the sense that
we no longer have to invest so much time in the work that we do. Time management and investment
has been optimized, therefore, the efforts put into every day tasks have been reduced. For example,
within the design studio, technological tools such as a smart board improves the way people meet and
share ideas. Essentially, this tool allows users to save and print notes, collaborate documents, share
information and runs video conferencing across distances. Rather than having to print an important
design for a presentation, students and faculty can visually obtain the attention of any audiences and
simply e mail notes to participants and share the work digitally. Some of the ways in which
technology has modified and improved the modern workplace are in an increase in productivity,
communication, and cost efficiency. First and foremost, technology allows us to be more efficient in
the things we do and reduce the amount of labor and time we invest to do something. Take for
example, a car or any type of vehicle. These modes of transportation are now readily available and are

Franchising Is A System Or Method Of Marketing A Product...
In general, franchising is a system or method of marketing a product or service. Since a Franchisor
develops a special product, service or system and has been recognized in nation, then it is possible to
exploit the current business. A franchisor grants a right or license to independent businessmen
throughout the world. Another definition emphasizes that franchising is an agreement between two
legally independent parties. (Lafontaine and Shaw, 1999) In this agreement business owner
(franchisor) license its trademark and business concept out to a person or a group of people

Figure 1 Franchising Concept
According to the Department of Commerce, the following are some of the major reasons why
companies decide to franchise (Selig, 1998)
Franchising provides an effective method for raising capital to finance expansion.
Franchising enables the franchiser to pool resources, advertise and promote, achieve economies of
scale in purchases, expand internationally and develop new products and services.
Franchising provides the franchiser quality control, consistency, and uniformity over goods and
services produced and/or distributed as well as media, public relations, image and appearance.
Franchising provides flexibility for respond¬ing to changing customer needs and emerging markets
within a wide variety of sectors.
Individuals become franchisees for a number of reasons.
Individuals, who want to become business owners versus employees, are not comfortable doing it
alone, but are comfortable working within a framework such as a franchise.
Individuals want to pursue the American dream of achieving high rewards through risk sharing in a
quasi structured environment.
Individuals want the benefits of a franchiser s name recognition, network, systems, training, and

Modern Pirates
David Taylor
Ellis
INTS 2130 Analysis paper
Mar 29, 2015
Modern Pirates In some fictional works pirates are portrayed in a heroic way. For example, Luffy,
captain of the main band of pirates in the popular anime cartoon One Piece, is depicted as a fun loving
adventurer that chases his dreams. He is a character to be emulated. Unfortunately, the modern day
Somali pirates of East Africa have that similar effect on some of the Somali people. According to the
African Economic Development Institute (AEDI), the bigger and more sophisticated European and
Asian fishing ships took advantage of the governmental collapse and the ensuing civil war in Somalia
in 1991. With permission of the corrupt military leaders and landlords, they greedily ... Show more

. . . The presence of pirates seems to prolong the Somali conflict (40). In a way, a terrible cycle has
now emerged. The Somali governmental collapse sparked the conflict and the conflict gave birth to
the pirates. Now it seems the pirates are being counterproductive in the establishment of a new
government. Pirates are some of the most powerful people in central regions, meaning that bringing
them to justice is a lot harder than simply issuing an arrest warrant. Arguably, young people are most
affected by the rise in piracy. Even though private business and end consumers globally are losing
money due to this issue, Somali youth are being forced to grow up in a country where piracy is not
only an acceptable job, but a prestigious one as well (AEDI 5). The United Nations Development
Programme Somalia interviewed and ex pirate who stated, After completing secondary education ... I

They could focus on the creation of innovative products and services. They have to create a more

An Experiment On The Reaction Of Acid And Decanting Has On...
Purpose:
It s important for reactions in aqueous solutions to reach equilibrium, meaning that both products and
reactants need to be present before continuing to the next reaction or next step. In this experiment,
copper was changed through eight different reactions. Throughout the process, qualitative
observations were recorded to see what effect each type of acid and decanting has on copper. All of
these steps were successfully completed by using different acidic solutions and zinc to take copper
through the cycle from copper solid to copper nitrate to copper hydroxide, to copper oxide, to copper
II sulfate, and back to copper solid.
Procedure:

Origins of the Apple Computer Company Essay
Did you know that the Apple computer started in someone s garage? Many people do not know how it
all started. Today, Apple Computer Incorporated, formerly known as Apple Computer Company,
dominates the technological industry with Mac, iPod, and iPhone sales. Apple had its best ever
quarterly revenue of $1.58 billion dollars in 2008 ( Best Quarterly Revenue n.pag.). The brilliant
minds of Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs led to the inventions of the Apple I and Apple II computers,
which revolutionized the computer industry of the 1970s and 1980s.
It all started with Steve Wozniak, the kind of person who liked to tell jokes and pull pranks at the
schools he attended. During high school, he decided he wanted to become an engineer. He ... Show

Steve programmed, designed, and tested diagnostics that went to various input and output devices, like
printers (Kendall 17). During his time there, he shared his ideas about computer projects with other
workers. He acquired computer chips from these workers that he would not have been able to get
otherwise. Telnet was not successful at selling its computer, so it closed in 1970 (Kendall 17).
However, his love and dedication towards computers would lead to the development of the first Apple
computer. In 1971, Steve and his friend Bill Hernandez designed a pretty good computer and his
mother was impressed. She contacted a local newspaper company to do a report on it. They were very
excited to explain the operation and specs to the reporter, but that is not how it happened. When the
reporter came to see the computer, they started the computer up and the blinking lights came on. After
that, someone stepped on the power cord, which caused the computer to start smoking, and then
stopped working. The reporter quickly left and only wrote a small article on their computer (Kendall
18). Steve decided it was time to choose a school based on its engineering program. He chose to go to
the University of California at Berkeley, because it was one of the best (Kendall 19). This is where he
met the most important friend, Steve Jobs. He was five years younger than Wozniak and still attending

The Power Of Control In George Orwell s 1984
George Orwell s 1984 and the Power of Controlling Thought INTRO PARAGRAPH: Ever read 1984
by George Orwell? It s a novel that is one of those big, bad always watching government types. I
assume you ve read it if you are reading this. In the novel, the government uses the power to control
what people believe and see to its advantage and does this through its ability to brainwash the masses.
Now, the novel and the world we live hold some similarities that I am going to share today. THESIS
STATEMENT: Orwell depicts the effects of an over controlling government on its citizens and the
similarity of its parallel effects in the current world we live in today. In 1984, the way the people are

If we look at the prompts we were given for this exact essay, one is asking us to defend the accuracy
of the statement for the theme of that the government s actions are not benevolent, but self serving.
The prompt itself isn t asking us if it is accurate. It s telling us that it is. What this does is give us as a
reader the preconceived notion that this is the truth. The problem here being that what if we don t
think that this statement is what the novel is about. Truthfully, you can interpret anything from a
novel, so you could really put any theme there and defend it. However the statement from the novel
itself describes this perfectly. Don t you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of
thought? In the end we shall make thought crime literally impossible, because there will be no words
in which to express it. (Orwell 23) The essays that we have been told to write are in fact doing such a
thing by having us restate themes and opinions told to us by higher powers and then defend such
themes. What this does is condition us to not have our own opinion on things. How many times have
you been on the internet and you see someone get famous based off their opinion on something, only
to have everyone else then start thinking the exact same way. People are in some regards, very sheep

The Causes And Effects Of Gangs In South America
One of the most death defying acts that occur across the whole globe are gangs. These gangs travel
coast to coast trying to kidnap, rob, murder, deal drugs, and even cause atrocities. One of the biggest
problems plaguing South America are these gang related issues. Nobody is attempting to stop these
gangs due to their vast amount of power. In fact, Donald Trump, and the United States are making an
effort to deport all of the MS 13 members and get them out of the country. Otherwise, nobody is trying
to stop them and they will just keep gaining more and more power as time goes on. The biggest
problem with these gangs is what they are causing and the effects that they give off. They are scaring
people away by their appearance, people are hearing on the news that these gangs are spreading and
how they are hotwiring cars, and stealing purses. Within the first two months of 2016, there has been a
record of 1,399 murders just caused by gangs. There is also an average of 24 murders per day, within
just this country. The most dangerous gangs in El Salvador are spreading all over the world which is
why this is a global issue. The two gangs that are being researched were created around 1960 to 1980.
These gangs were first founded in the barrios of Los Angeles and were spread all the way to South and
Central America. Barrios are neighborhoods or streets in spanish speaking countries. This is where
most South American gangs were created. These gangs are made up of South American

Research Paper On Constructivism
Constructivism: A Review
Abstract
Constructivism is an all encompassing theory of learning that emerged as a prevailing paradigm in the
last part of the twentieth century. Constructivism is a theory which brings cogitation to pedagogy
(Bruner, 1966). Constructivism capitalizes on the ways in which human beings create their own
personal construct of reality by understanding and experiencing the world. The cornerstone of
constructivism is that constructing personal meaning is ingrained in individuals right from the birth
(Vygotsky, 1978).
The Overview
Constructivist approach explains the ways in which learners make their own personal senses of
learning tasks, the environment, the teacher, and the actual process of learning (Vygotsky, 1962).

In education teacher acts more akin to a mediator consulting and helping learner grow. Social
constructivism adopts its stance as internationalist perspective operating within social context.
Learners are actively involved in the process of learning shaping their experiences about the world by
other significant people (Vygotsky, 1962).
3
Constructivism is part of educational psychology which places the learner at the central focus.
Learner learns by interacting in a social context of teacher and text. Each individual learner is sui
generis, no two learners are the same. The ways they view the world are not the same. Learners bring
these differences to the learning situation. Teachers must be cognizant of these differences.
Furthermore no two teachers and teaching situations are ever the same. Like students, teachers should
become self aware of their beliefs and attitude to the teaching and learning and make their own
contributions to the learner as the situations arise (Williams and Burden, 1997). While learners are
interacting with the task beforehand, teachers are required to take the learners response to the tasks to
see if they are appropriate to their levels of developments congruent

Teen Messaging Influence On Teens
It s a well known fact that adolescents adore messaging. Overviews indicate it has turned into their
favored type of correspondence, with youths sending and getting a normal of 167 writings for every
day. The greater part of the discourses encompassing messaging and adolescents have concentrated on
the impact messaging has on social aptitudes and up close and personal social collaborations, and
additionally it being a risky diversion while driving. However, another examination recommends that
while messaging turns into a urgent propensity, it can hurt teenagers scholastically. This affiliation,
notwithstanding, was just found in young ladies. It creates the impression that it is the enthusiastic
idea of messaging, as opposed to sheer recurrence, that is dangerous, lead analyst Kelly M. Lister
Landman, PhD, of Delaware District Junior college, said in an announcement. Enthusiastic messaging
is more mind boggling than recurrence of messaging. It includes attempting and neglecting to reduce
messaging, getting to be noticeably protective when tested about the conduct, and feeling disappointed
when one can t do it. Lister Landman and her partners reviewed 403 understudies in grades eight and
11 out of a semi rural town in the Midwest. The scientists planned a scale measuring urgent messaging
by asking understudies questions like: How regularly do you find that you message longer than you
proposed? How frequently do you check your writings previously accomplishing

In many instances many people do not trust the tsar or tsarina judgment because of the presence of
Rasputin. Rasputin becomes more of a nuisance to the royal family because he s very uneducated and
makes poor choices. His St. Petersburg apartment became a very busy office where he would take care
of medical problems and with his healing powers. He let payment be paid in money, pledges of
loyalty, or the most controversial kisses. This would have passed with no questions if at that time
Russia were not entering a period of crisis of war. Nicholas was forced to grant the constitution and
convene a parliament. Many loved and admired the tsar he was remarkably charming and just gave a
special atmosphere to the people. Though during these times Nicholas s greatest problems came from
the moderate opposition. Liberals and moderate conservatives were alarmed over defeats. Nicholas
refused to share power with the Duma. As time past in Russia tsar Nicholas and Alexandra became
very unpopular with the people of Russia. By the early 1916 Alexandra was the most hated woman in
Russia. Much popular opinion held that she was the leader of the dark forces that was driving the
Russian nation to destruction. By as early as 1915 the name Grigory Rasputin was in everyone s lips.
As time progress the situation was even worse. Rasputin s relationship with the royal family took on a

Rasputin was in a state of deep depression during the last three days of his life. A few days late
Rasputin was murdered by Felix Yusupov which not many historians understand why. Many believed

When Best Buy, the leading American consumer electronics...
When Best Buy, the leading American consumer electronics retailer planned to expand its operations
outside the United States in December 2000, they earmarked Canada as the first foreign country for its
international expansion strategy. The choice was mainly driven by the fact that Canada was its closest
neighbor with a retail market that was largely similar to the domestic United States market, which
Best Buy had already dominated. The Canadian consumer electronic retail market was largely
fragmented, with the dominant force being future shop which had 15% of the market share. The
original expansion strategy for Best Buy was to enter the Canadian market and directly compete with
future shop as well as the other market players for a piece ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Rebranding the Future Shop franchises would be a lengthy and costly process.
Future shop already had brand recognition as well as brand loyalty in Canada
Best Buy had already committed itself to a number of property leases before the merger.
The business risks that accompanied the move included the fear that the two competing brands, now
subsidiaries of the same company, would cannibalize each other s sales, thus splitting the profits. Also,
there were concerns that the duplication of roles that would result from each company having its own
distinct management structure would increase operational costs, minimizing overall profitability.
Another fear was that there would be diminished brand awareness for both brands as consumers would
treat the two retailers as one company, thus benefiting the competition (Laurent, Lambkin 803).
However, the strategy proved successful. This was largely because the two retailers had their own
separate operational structure and style that attracted different market segments (Bala, Lorange 4 11),
which avoided sales cannibalization between them.
Within the first year, positive results were already being seen; a case in point that proved the strategy
was successful was in Mississauga where the sales revenue only dropped by $2 million from $40
million to $38 million while a Best Buy outlet just across the street recorded $30 million in sales
(Chandrasekhar.5)

Analysis Of Rita Hayworth And The Shawshank Redemption
In Rita Hayworth and The Shawshank Redemption the prison acts as a microcosm reflecting the
structures of the capitalist society to what extent do you agree with this view?
One critic named Terry Eagleton, stated It is capitalism, not Marxism that trades in futures. This quote
alone suggests the extent of what capitalism is to some Marxist critiques and this one is suggesting
that the future is traded upon capitalism which relates to King s Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank
Redemption as the prison system does determine the future of inmates yet inside the prison there is a
capitalist structure. I will look at a plethora of characters in the novella and explore how their roles in
the prison are used to reflect capitalist society: Andy a bourgeoisie socially but a proletariat politically,
Red who goes under the system whom also, serves the proletariat even though he is one himself and
the warden that uses his role as the bourgeoisie for corruption and power over the inmates. Despite the
inmates being in a confined space and managed by the outside world. It could be argued that the
Shawshank prison is formulating a society of their own.
Kings use of the character, Andy, is vague. As it could be argued that his role changes throughout the
novella. It could be said that there are many interpretations to where Andy s character develops as he
can be measured by his political and social class as we see done by the prisoners and the wider
society. Reiman wrote a book titled the rich get richer and the poor get prison this pragmatically
shows that those who are poor go to prison. However, this is not the case with Andy due to the fact
before he was in prison he was a successful banker so in fact he was not poor, opposing the view, that
Reiman is signifying. Somewhat suggesting that King is stating that society could have an impact on
any group of people regardless of what the backgrounds are or the backgrounds of the individual.
Andy was a banker before he came to the Shawshank prison. In some lens he would be perceived as a
bourgeoisie because of the class that would have been in. However, from a political lens it would be
evident that Andy could be a proletariat for the ranks of the company that he had

fact, Twain s novel is often taught as the text that epitomizes this tradition, with Huck held up as its

itself rather than conform to the sivilizing process of communities he rejects. (1) Yet such a focus
belies an alternate strand in the tradition: moments of radical connection that call into question not just
the value but even the possibility of autonomy The passage from which my title is drawn illustrates
this point. At the very moment Jim s freedom seems most in crisis, when Tom s injury puts the escape

Chad s Theory Of The Decision Making Process Essay
Introduction
Chad started with Amazon in August 2012 as an IT Engineer I. His technical acuity and leadership
qualities had an immediate impact while he consistently worked above his level. Chad s technical
proficiencies had an immediate effect as he was instrumental in multiple projects. These projects
include establishing a new global standard for cable procurement across FCIT, MyTime Kronos time
clock, and the 1D to 2D barcode project. He was subsequently promoted to an Engineer II in October
2013 and continued his track record of providing high quality engineer services
Chad continued to develop technically as his scope of responsibilities and the scale of his projects
increased. He then focused on engagement, delegation, communication, and facilitated project
completion by becoming an integral part of the decision making process. Chad s success in these
endeavors earned the trust of his leadership as he became a trusted resource while establishing himself

Appearance and Color
Color is a major quality attribute in dried food products. In order to facilitate the comparison of color
and appearances of the samples, a digital picture was taken from each dried sample. Figure 5 shows

when to have children. Reproductive health is about safe pregnancy and childbirth, prevention and
treatment of sexually transmitted diseases, and family planning and access to contraception. This is
the UN definition of reproductive rights, and is created based on UN s Millennium Development
Goals. The goals as well as this explanation are something all nations should thrive towards. I will
take a look at Norway, and how the situation regarding reproductive capacities, as well as reproductive
rights, as this goes hand in hand. There is two reasons I am looking at Norway, one being that I am
myself from Norway, and can on some level speak based on my own experience. The main reason
however is that Norway has many times, and by many different surveys, been rated the best country in
the world to live in , and can therefore be seen as a primary example on reproductive rights. I will take
a look at the different policies put in place in Norway, as well, as the tittle states what claims partners,
family and the Norwegian state have regarding reproductive capacities.
First of a brief run through of the Norwegian family life. The period after World War II (1940 1945)
and until the end of the 60s are often called the housewife s prime. The mother was home with the
children while the father worked outside the home. Beyond 70 s there was great demand for labour
and it was more common

Slavery In The Movie Roots
Slavery
In our class we watched this very sad and inspirational movie called Roots. The movie is based on the
very well liked book by Alex Hailey. The mini series was made in 1977 and tells a story about his
african american family throughout the 1750 to the 1870. It shows how they want from their oldest
back relative named Kunta Kinte and went through the generations to when they finally escaped to
freedom. At first looking at slavery i thought that it wasn t that bad and you could get out of being a
slave pretty easily but, after watching this show i now know that slavery is one of the cruelest things
that has ever happened on the earth. Slavery is very brutal because some of the African American
women were raped by their owners, Also they were forced to change there name to be more white
like, and lastly most slaves would never know what it was like to be free.
First off, slavery is truly inhumane because slave owners often raped their slaves. Not only is this
disgusting but it s evil. All slaves were forced to comply or else they would be punished. Most of the
female slaves were raped on a regular basis. Sometimes the master was over 50 and was messing with
people who are my age and maybe even younger. In the movie Kunte Kinte s ... Show more content on

Some slaves would only work in the fields there whole life. The Kinte family went through many
generations of people before they were finally free. It is truly a sad life if all you ever did was work
for some white man for no pay and no outside life. Even when it seemed like the blacks were free
when Abraham Lincoln became president, many whites still mistreated African Americans . For
example in the show after they became free they were invaded by the KKK and george was whipped
by them until saved by his white friend who was also named george. Even though it seemed like they
were free they really weren t until they moved to

Cochlear Implants Case Study
When faced with having to make a major decision for their children, parents are often thrown into a
difficult and perplexing situation. These decisions become even more difficult for the parents when the
decision involves putting their children through something they cannot relate to. This is the case when
parents are required to decide whether to have cochlear implant surgery performed on their deaf child.
The decision of whether to go through with this procedure, which, when successful, provides a deaf
individual with the ability to hear, puts parents in a position to make an epistemically and personally
transformative decision for their child. Ultimately, the decision comes down to the experiences and
preferences of the parents; whether ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Paul begins her exploration into this transformative choice by examining the stances of two different
groups regarding this decision: members of the Deaf community, and the remainder of the general
population. According to Paul, when considering the necessity of having cochlear implant surgery
performed on their children, major ideological differences between the two groups became quite
apparent: While large medical corporations, experts in the medical community, and some members of
the hearing population strongly supported the use of cochlear implants, especially in children, many
members of the Deaf community resisted mass implantation (Paul 57). From the perspective of a
hearing individual, this preference may seem baffling. What would prevent someone from wanting
their child to have all the advantages of life, including the ability to use all their senses to their fullest
potential? This way of thinking, however, only gives insight into how humans make decisions; that is,
subjectively based on our own personal values and experiences. In the eyes of Deaf parents (with a
capital D, implying that they are members of a community of non hearing, fully capable people,
instead of a group of disabled individuals), being Deaf is a blessing, giving their children access to a
community that provides its members with shared experiences and support that is unavailable in any
other way (Paul 58). Ultimately, the parents do what they personally see as the best course of action
for helping their

Full Disclosure Principle
The full disclosure principle states that any future event that may or will occur, and thatwill have a
material economic impact on the financial position of the business, should be disclosed to probable
and potential readers of the statements. Such disclosures are most frequently made by footnotes. For
example, a hotel should report the building of a new wing, or the future acquisition of another
property. A restaurant facing a lawsuit from a customer who was injured by tripping over a frayed
carpet edge should disclose the contingency of the lawsuit. Similarly, if accounting practices of the
current financial statements were changed and differ from those previously reported, the changes
should be disclosed. Changes from one period to the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When firms enter new markets or businesses, the way they structure these new businesses can result in
greater complexity and less transparency. For instance, a firm that keeps each business separate will be
easier to value than one that squeezes all the businesses into a single entity.
The cause of poor transparency, however, is less important than its effect on a company s ability to
give investors the critical information they need to value their investments. If investors neither believe
nor understand financial statements, the performance and fundamental value of that company remains
either irrelevant or distorted. Mounting evidence suggests that the market gives a higher value to firms
that are upfront with investors and analysts. Transparency pays, companies with fuller disclosure win
more trust from investors. Relevant and reliable information means less risk to investors and thus a
lower cost of capital, which naturally translates into higher valuations. Of course, there are two ways
to interpret this evidence. One is that the market rewards more transparent companies with higher
valuations because the risk of unpleasant surprises is believed to be lower. The other interpretation is
that companies with good results usually release their earnings earlier. Companies that are doing well
have nothing to hide and are eager to publicize their good performance. It is in their best

Abstinence Or Protection
Should We Teach Abstinence or Protection? We ve all heard the saying the best protection from
sexually transmitted diseases and pregnancies is abstinence. But should abstinence be the only source
of protection that students in today s American society should be learning? Reproduction is embedded
in our genes; it is one of the four most important traits being a living organism. Is it in their favor to let
teens and young adults have their first time more confusing and irresponsible when it comes to
intercourse? So many questions pop up when you think about which method would be superior. There
are many measures that can be taken to prevent AIDs and pregnancies. STDs, STIs, and young
pregnancies are becoming more prevalent in todays younger ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The main topics you hear these days when it comes to sex are about how someone has a strong pullout
game or about a pregnancy. It is a falsehood throughout our generation that pulling out during sex and
not ejaculating into a woman s vagina will prevent pregnancies. These are not the things that our
younger generation should grow up with, they are having unprotected sex because they were never
taught the consequences of being unprotected. As ads get sexier and celebrities get sluttier, the word
sex is getting to become more tempting. The article The Mass Media Educate Youth About Sex by
Jane Brown and Sarah Keller states, Typically, those who own and create communications media have
been more concerned with attracting audiences and selling products than they have been promoting
healthy sexuality. Our generation has become embedded with erotic thoughts and actions. Anna
Quindlen mentioned, When I was in high school, at the tail end of the sixties, there was a
straightforward line on sex among my friends. Boys could have it; girls couldn t. A girl who was not a
virgin pretended she was. It was almost unthinkable to talk about sex in earlier generations, or even
mention other aspects of sex instead of the typical man women intercourse. In the article dating back
to the year 2000 by Jane Brown and Sarah Keller they acknowledge, Sexually transmitted diseases

The Secret Of The Kitchen Essay
Can you relate to this? It starts with the best intentions. You will cook. You can even search the web
and pick out recipes or make a list. But then something comes up. Get distracted. You stay at work late
or go out with your friends. Upon arriving home is eight and a half and have nothing in the kitchen to
cook and no desire to go out and buy food. The secret of the kitchen has a fridge and a cupboard. If it
is eight o clock in the evening and into the kitchen to find an empty fridge, chances are pretty low that
you will cook a meal. Entropy Overand dinner ends a series of appetizers, improvised from the last of
the cookies is in the closet and the last part of humus in the refrigerator. To keep your kitchen, you
must have a constant plan weekly food shopping. Is not it funny how we plan our week s work, our
vacations, our family obligations, but somehow, they completely avoid planning in the time to shop
and cook? Here are the basics for making a food purchase plan that makes it accessible even to cook
during the week. 1. Create a shopping list by hand or machine. Make a list of all the staples you would
like to have in your kitchen. Also add the ingredients of their favorite recipes. You can use this list
every week and keep adding to it as you learn about new foods and recipes. 2. Keep the list handy and
up to date. Post the list on the refrigerator. Check all that just as the week progresses. That way do not
forget the vital ingredients. 3. Plan. Choose the

Mexican American Family In The Mexican Family
El cambio es algo bueno. That means change is a good thing and I have a proposal that involves
change for families. I believe that Mexican families deserve a shot to live in America, even if they are
illegal immigrants. The plan involves a way where a United States family and a family from Mexico
can both benefit from each other. The three ways that a U.S. family and a Mexican family can benefit
from each other are: sharing different foods, learning new languages, and learning new life skills.
While these exchanges are going, the Mexican family earns free citizenship as well. This is a
government funded program. The families will have to pay for their own food and housing, but the
housing is supplied by the government for a low price. The housing fee pays for a limited, but
reasonable, amount of water and electricity.
No one likes to eat the same type of food every day. Mexican food is one of the most popular types of
food eaten in the United States. The Mexican families that come over to get their citizenship can run
Mexican restaurants during shifts throughout the day and night. The restaurants will be open 24 hours
a day at places like hospitals, hotels, and colleges. They will make simple kinds of foods like: tacos,
enchiladas, and quesadillas. The food will be sold for a cheaper price than usual, but the quality of the
food will still be well and enjoyable. This will be benefiting the Americans who need a quality lunch
for cheap. This will also benefit the Mexicans

The French New Wave Cinema
French New Wave cinema is widely considered one of the most influential periods in cinematic
history. The filmmaking techniques and ideas utilized during the French New Wave period can still be
seen in modern cinema, with some films uses them more than others. Two films that more obviously
been influenced by the era are Quentin Tarantino s 1992 film Reservoir Dogs and Christopher Nolan s
2000 film Memento. These films exude many traits and styles synonymous with French New Wave
cinema such as jump cuts and non continuity editing, a low budget, anti heroic main characters, as
well as others.
French New Wave was a cinematic movement that was active between the late 1950 s and the late
1960 s though the origins go back to german occupied France from the early 1940 s. Following the
liberation of 1944, France saw the end of restrictions of media imposed by german occupation and the
cinema became more popular than ever, with a stockpile of banned American films starting to flow in
and France ramping up film production once again. Despite this by the early 1950 s it became more
popular opinion by both critics and audiences that had become, for a lack of a better word, stale,
getting bogged down in an endless cycle of generic historical reconstructions and uninspired literary
adaptations... French Cinema was said to be in desperate need of a new direction (Neupert, 17).
During this time the film magazine, Cahiers du Cinema, was founded. Some of its young writers, such

Dubois and the Color Line Essay
3.) According to DuBois, the problem of the twentieth century is the problem of the color line. Using
several representative examples, consider how American writers (of any color) since the Civil War
have addressed this problem.
DuBois s quote, The problem of the twentieth century is the problem of the color line, tells a great
deal of how Americans in general felt towards segregation each side had suspicions about the goings
ons of the other race. Blacks had a stronger sense of such hesitency because of their history with
Whites, and Whites were generally afraid of anything different than themselves, thus the enslavement.
Hughes, as a writer, dealt with this problem in a way that few had done, and fewer had done
successfully ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This caused many blacks to feel shame for their roots and ancestral past, and a small but powerful
voice in their mind whispered the words that Hughes called the Racial Mountain: I want to be white .
Many blacks at the time could not feel anything but shame for their past, and Hughes wanted the
opposing outlook on that scale to feel pride in being black; to recognize the true beauty within
themselves which is where true being, and true art, can begin to flower and flourish.
DuBois s story The Veil shows a concept that is visible on many levels. The veil can be seen as the
literal darker skin of the black people, which is an easy way to identitify any race from any other race.
This physical trait allows for discrimination solely because it is the easiest thing to point out. The veil
also explores the idea of the White s lack of acceptance of Blacks as Americans, let alone real
Americans. The veil also covers the notion of the Blacks inability to see themselves outside of what
America (White Americans) had described them as.
Then it dawned upon me with a certain suddeness that I was different from the others; or like [them
perhaps] in heart and life and longing, but shut out from their world by a vast veil. I had thereafter no
desire to tear down that veil, to creep through; I held all beyond it in common contempt, and lived
above it

Becoming A Physician s Assistant Research Paper
In my time volunteering at the hospital, I hope to gain many different experiences. However, there are
a few main ones: adaptation through enrichment and dependability. First of all, I want to get to know
and adapt to the environment of the hospital and learn how different processes work. This is a crucial
part of being in the atmosphere of a clinic. Also, the experiences that I will have at the hospital will
help me to understand the routines and entailments of the career I would like to pursue. I hope to
become a Physician s Assistant in the future and this will be the best way to know if it is the right
position for me. This enrichment of my understanding will help guide my passion for this career path
and hopefully strengthen it.

  • 2. Flatland by Edwin A. Abbott Essay Flatland is a story of depth, and the lack there of. The tale of A. Square s ventures through Pointland, Lineland and Spaceland ultimately reveal to him the possibilities of the seemingly impossible. In this case, the impossibilities are the very existence of other dimensions, or worlds. His guide throughout the journey, a god like figure who refers to itself as Sphere , bestows upon A. Square the greatest gift he could hope for, knowledge. It is only after the Sphere forcibly takes A. Square out of his dimension, however, that he is able to shrug off his ignorance and accept the fact that what cannot be, can, and much of what he believed before is wrong. When he sees first hand that a square can have depth simply by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Flatland is a book which main purpose is to make the reader think; it raises many questions. Is there a fourth, fifth, sixth, infinite dimensions? Logically, there should be. Just as there is a dimension zero, a dimension one, a second and third dimension, should not there also be a fourth? The Sphere speaks to A. Square of Geometrical Progression 1, 2, 4 and hints that it goes beyond even that (to 8). But of course, A. Square cannot see that while he is still in his own realm. It is only after he enters the three dimensional world that he can realize it fully. He then remarks rather quickly about how there should be something else. He says to the Sphere that doubtless there is One above you who combines many Spheres in One Supreme Existence, surpassing even the Solids of Spaceland (p. 102). He thinks logically that why should it stop here? There has to be another more spacious space (p.102) somewhere. The Sphere cannot answer the question A. Square so desperately seeks the answer for, and the reason for this is explained in the foreword by Abbot. Something that does not exist cannot even be realized. That is where the impossibility lies. People in Flatland are even incapable of understanding the limitations of that view! The King of Lineland cannot understand something that his mind will not allow to exist any better than the entity Pointland can think outside his prison of thought. Another interesting part of the book is the way women are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Analyzing The Production Cycle Of A Salmon Farming Company Introduction Financial market instruments are essential for hedging the occurring risks of business corporations. There is a large market for financial instruments, such as the derivatives that are used to hedge commodities, currencies, equities and interest rates. • 8. Individualism In The House On Mango Street Let your home be your mast and not your anchor, said Kahlil Gibran, exposing the unneeded focus on materialism to keep people in a harsh cycle of poverty. Expressing an idea that materialistic should not force stigma and should show individualism, Gibran provides insight into the bullying through goods. In this way, he relates to Cisneros s ideas through the usage of a house as a metaphor for good created feelings of shame. This image of individualism is expanded through the stress on own . In a similar fashion, while thinking about foreign neighborhoods, Esperanza thinks, All brown all around, we are safe. But watch us drive into a neighborhood of another color and our knees go shakity shake and our car windows get rolled up tight and our eyes look straight . Esperanza shows that she feels safe when there is all brown all around , further emphasizing her point of being an individual. The usage of the home in this case represents a flaw of Esperanza and how it is bad to be in a different home than her. Later, Cisneros utilizes Esperanza s fantasy of her aspiration to own her house, One day I ll own my own house, but I won t forget who I am or where I came from. Passing bums will ask, Can I come in? However, in recent years this trend has stopped the emissions rate has steadied. The Australian nation has been emitting in the range of 250,000 to 450,000 thousand metric tons greenhouse gases per year from 1990 to 2010. Data from 2008 to 2012 show the carbon dioxide emissions as a fraction of the total greenhouse gas. Another form of carbon credit trading applies to companies. If a company is having difficulties in sticking to maximum allowable emissions amount, it can use its resources to invest in an emission reduction project. This project will be one that produces carbon offsets, which he company may use to cover the amount that was they could previously not. Efficiency at a power plant is determined by energy conversion rate. This is rate is measured by the input energy source, in this case coal, in proportion to the output, which is the power generated. The less fuel that is required for power generation, the more efficient it is. Efficiency is very sensitive in relation to the amount of carbon dioxide emitted. A single percentage increase in the efficiency of a coal fired power plant yields a 2 3% reduction in the carbon dioxide levels emitted by this plant. The power stations on the upper side on the scale of efficiency may emit up to 40% less carbon dioxide than the average power stations currently installed. Mothers and their babies form an instinctive attachment to each other using genetically inherited skills such as smiling, grasping, crying and so on. If a separation occurs between mother and infant within the first few years of the child s life, Bowlby believed that the bond would be irreversibly broken, leading to severe emotional consequences for the infant in later life. The recent debates about child abuse and the question of whether or not to remove at risk children from their natural parents can be seen to be related to the idea of maternal deprivation. If Bowlby is right, it may be better to leave such children with their parents the long term damage which could result from maternal deprivation might be a more important consideration than the risk of abuse. On the other hand, if Bowlby is wrong, children could be left in a potentially dangerous situation. However, one of the major effects of Bowlby s claims was to direct greater attention to the child s emotional and psychological needs, which weren t considered as important in the 1920 s and 30 s as they are today. Much of the evidence Bowlby uses to support his views comes from studies carried out in the 1950 s and 60 s. The nature of the issues being investigated meant that controlled experiments couldn t be carried out. It would not be possible to separate children from their mothers in an experiment! Because control of variables was difficult, clear conclusions were difficult to draw. Other evidence from psychoanalytic case studies or from animal studies must also be interpreted very carefully. Unfortunately, the modern day Somali pirates of East Africa have that similar effect on some of the Somali people. Purpose: It s important for reactions in aqueous solutions to reach equilibrium, meaning that both products and reactants need to be present before continuing to the next reaction or next step. In this experiment, copper was changed through eight different reactions. Throughout the process, qualitative observations were recorded to see what effect each type of acid and decanting has on copper. All of these steps were successfully completed by using different acidic solutions and zinc to take copper through the cycle from copper solid to copper nitrate to copper hydroxide, to copper oxide, to copper II sulfate, and back to copper solid. Also, there were concerns that the duplication of roles that would result from each company having its own distinct management structure would increase operational costs, minimizing overall profitability. Another fear was that there would be diminished brand awareness for both brands as consumers would treat the two retailers as one company, thus benefiting the competition (Laurent, Lambkin 803). However, the strategy proved successful. This was largely because the two retailers had their own separate operational structure and style that attracted different market segments (Bala, Lorange 4 11), which avoided sales cannibalization between them. • 34. Analysis Of Rita Hayworth And The Shawshank Redemption In Rita Hayworth and The Shawshank Redemption the prison acts as a microcosm reflecting the structures of the capitalist society to what extent do you agree with this view? One critic named Terry Eagleton, stated It is capitalism, not Marxism that trades in futures. This quote alone suggests the extent of what capitalism is to some Marxist critiques and this one is suggesting that the future is traded upon capitalism which relates to King s Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption as the prison system does determine the future of inmates yet inside the prison there is a capitalist structure. I will look at a plethora of characters in the novella and explore how their roles in the prison are used to reflect capitalist society: Andy a bourgeoisie socially but a proletariat politically, Red who goes under the system whom also, serves the proletariat even though he is one himself and the warden that uses his role as the bourgeoisie for corruption and power over the inmates. Despite the inmates being in a confined space and managed by the outside world. It could be argued that the Shawshank prison is formulating a society of their own. Kings use of the character, Andy, is vague. As it could be argued that his role changes throughout the novella. It could be said that there are many interpretations to where Andy s character develops as he can be measured by his political and social class as we see done by the prisoners and the wider society. Reiman wrote a book titled the rich get richer and the poor get prison this pragmatically shows that those who are poor go to prison. However, this is not the case with Andy due to the fact before he was in prison he was a successful banker so in fact he was not poor, opposing the view, that Reiman is signifying. Somewhat suggesting that King is stating that society could have an impact on any group of people regardless of what the backgrounds are or the backgrounds of the individual. Andy was a banker before he came to the Shawshank prison. In some lens he would be perceived as a bourgeoisie because of the class that would have been in. In fact, Twain s novel is often taught as the text that epitomizes this tradition, with Huck held up as its exemplar: a boy courageous enough to stand against the moral conventions of his society, to risk Hell itself rather than conform to the sivilizing process of communities he rejects. • 38. What Is The Appearance And Color In Dried Food Products Appearance and Color Color is a major quality attribute in dried food products. In order to facilitate the comparison of color and appearances of the samples, a digital picture was taken from each dried sample. Figure 5 shows the pictures of the pretreated with citric acid solution, blanched and control samples. The slices treated with citric acid provided better color for drying. It could be concluded that the general appearance and color of the dried potato slices were preserved by treating with citric acid solution in comparison with the blanched and control samples. Reproductive health is about safe pregnancy and childbirth, prevention and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases, and family planning and access to contraception. This is the UN definition of reproductive rights, and is created based on UN s Millennium Development Goals. The goals as well as this explanation are something all nations should thrive towards. I will take a look at Norway, and how the situation regarding reproductive capacities, as well as reproductive rights, as this goes hand in hand. There is two reasons I am looking at Norway, one being that I am myself from Norway, and can on some level speak based on my own experience. The main reason however is that Norway has many times, and by many different surveys, been rated the best country in the world to live in , and can therefore be seen as a primary example on reproductive rights. I will take a look at the different policies put in place in Norway, as well, as the tittle states what claims partners, family and the Norwegian state have regarding reproductive capacities. The mini series was made in 1977 and tells a story about his african american family throughout the 1750 to the 1870. It shows how they want from their oldest back relative named Kunta Kinte and went through the generations to when they finally escaped to freedom. At first looking at slavery i thought that it wasn t that bad and you could get out of being a slave pretty easily but, after watching this show i now know that slavery is one of the cruelest things that has ever happened on the earth. Slavery is very brutal because some of the African American women were raped by their owners, Also they were forced to change there name to be more white like, and lastly most slaves would never know what it was like to be free. First off, slavery is truly inhumane because slave owners often raped their slaves. Not only is this disgusting but it s evil. All slaves were forced to comply or else they would be punished. • 41. Cochlear Implants Case Study When faced with having to make a major decision for their children, parents are often thrown into a difficult and perplexing situation. These decisions become even more difficult for the parents when the decision involves putting their children through something they cannot relate to. This is the case when parents are required to decide whether to have cochlear implant surgery performed on their deaf child. The decision of whether to go through with this procedure, which, when successful, provides a deaf individual with the ability to hear, puts parents in a position to make an epistemically and personally transformative decision for their child. Ultimately, the decision comes down to the experiences and preferences of the parents; whether ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Paul begins her exploration into this transformative choice by examining the stances of two different groups regarding this decision: members of the Deaf community, and the remainder of the general population. According to Paul, when considering the necessity of having cochlear implant surgery performed on their children, major ideological differences between the two groups became quite apparent: While large medical corporations, experts in the medical community, and some members of the hearing population strongly supported the use of cochlear implants, especially in children, many members of the Deaf community resisted mass implantation (Paul 57). From the perspective of a hearing individual, this preference may seem baffling. What would prevent someone from wanting their child to have all the advantages of life, including the ability to use all their senses to their fullest potential? This way of thinking, however, only gives insight into how humans make decisions; that is, subjectively based on our own personal values and experiences. In the eyes of Deaf parents (with a capital D, implying that they are members of a community of non hearing, fully capable people, instead of a group of disabled individuals), being Deaf is a blessing, giving their children access to a community that provides its members with shared experiences and support that is unavailable in any other way (Paul 58). Full Disclosure Principle The full disclosure principle states that any future event that may or will occur, and thatwill have a material economic impact on the financial position of the business, should be disclosed to probable and potential readers of the statements. Such disclosures are most frequently made by footnotes. For example, a hotel should report the building of a new wing, or the future acquisition of another property. A restaurant facing a lawsuit from a customer who was injured by tripping over a frayed carpet edge should disclose the contingency of the lawsuit. Similarly, if accounting practices of the current financial statements were changed and differ from those previously reported, the changes should be disclosed. Changes from one period to the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When firms enter new markets or businesses, the way they structure these new businesses can result in greater complexity and less transparency. For instance, a firm that keeps each business separate will be easier to value than one that squeezes all the businesses into a single entity. The cause of poor transparency, however, is less important than its effect on a company s ability to give investors the critical information they need to value their investments. If investors neither believe nor understand financial statements, the performance and fundamental value of that company remains either irrelevant or distorted. Mounting evidence suggests that the market gives a higher value to firms that are upfront with investors and analysts. Transparency pays, companies with fuller disclosure win more trust from investors. Relevant and reliable information means less risk to investors and thus a lower cost of capital, which naturally translates into higher valuations. Of course, there are two ways to interpret this evidence. One is that the market rewards more transparent companies with higher valuations because the risk of unpleasant surprises is believed to be lower. The other interpretation is that companies with good results usually release their earnings earlier. • 45. Mexican American Family In The Mexican Family El cambio es algo bueno. That means change is a good thing and I have a proposal that involves change for families. I believe that Mexican families deserve a shot to live in America, even if they are illegal immigrants. The plan involves a way where a United States family and a family from Mexico can both benefit from each other. The three ways that a U.S. family and a Mexican family can benefit from each other are: sharing different foods, learning new languages, and learning new life skills. While these exchanges are going, the Mexican family earns free citizenship as well. This is a government funded program. The families will have to pay for their own food and housing, but the housing is supplied by the government for a low price. The housing fee pays for a limited, but reasonable, amount of water and electricity. No one likes to eat the same type of food every day. Mexican food is one of the most popular types of food eaten in the United States. The Mexican families that come over to get their citizenship can run Mexican restaurants during shifts throughout the day and night. The restaurants will be open 24 hours a day at places like hospitals, hotels, and colleges. They will make simple kinds of foods like: tacos, enchiladas, and quesadillas. The food will be sold for a cheaper price than usual, but the quality of the food will still be well and enjoyable. This will be benefiting the Americans who need a quality lunch for cheap. • 46. The French New Wave Cinema French New Wave cinema is widely considered one of the most influential periods in cinematic history. The filmmaking techniques and ideas utilized during the French New Wave period can still be seen in modern cinema, with some films uses them more than others. Two films that more obviously been influenced by the era are Quentin Tarantino s 1992 film Reservoir Dogs and Christopher Nolan s 2000 film Memento. These films exude many traits and styles synonymous with French New Wave cinema such as jump cuts and non continuity editing, a low budget, anti heroic main characters, as well as others. French New Wave was a cinematic movement that was active between the late 1950 s and the late 1960 s though the origins go back to german occupied France from the early 1940 s. Following the liberation of 1944, France saw the end of restrictions of media imposed by german occupation and the cinema became more popular than ever, with a stockpile of banned American films starting to flow in and France ramping up film production once again. Despite this by the early 1950 s it became more popular opinion by both critics and audiences that had become, for a lack of a better word, stale, getting bogged down in an endless cycle of generic historical reconstructions and uninspired literary adaptations... • 47. Dubois and the Color Line Essay 3.) According to DuBois, the problem of the twentieth century is the problem of the color line. Using several representative examples, consider how American writers (of any color) since the Civil War have addressed this problem. DuBois s quote, The problem of the twentieth century is the problem of the color line, tells a great deal of how Americans in general felt towards segregation each side had suspicions about the goings ons of the other race. Blacks had a stronger sense of such hesitency because of their history with Whites, and Whites were generally afraid of anything different than themselves, thus the enslavement. This caused many blacks to feel shame for their roots and ancestral past, and a small but powerful voice in their mind whispered the words that Hughes called the Racial Mountain: I want to be white . Many blacks at the time could not feel anything but shame for their past, and Hughes wanted the opposing outlook on that scale to feel pride in being black; to recognize the true beauty within themselves which is where true being, and true art, can begin to flower and flourish. DuBois s story The Veil shows a concept that is visible on many levels. The veil can be seen as the literal darker skin of the black people, which is an easy way to identitify any race from any other race. This physical trait allows for discrimination solely because it is the easiest thing to point out. The veil also explores the idea of the White s lack of acceptance of Blacks as Americans, let alone real Americans. The veil also covers the notion of the Blacks inability to see themselves outside of what America (White Americans) had described them as. Then it dawned upon me with a certain suddeness that I was different from the others; or like [them perhaps] in heart and life and longing, but shut out from their world by a vast veil.
