Your Over the Counter Dosage of Meditation
Medication and surgical treatment can go from a five–dollar box of Advil at CVS to a ten–
thousand–dollar heart surgery at your nearest hospital. But what if there was a way to lower your
chances for little to no cost; would you try it? Well, just for your knowledge, there is an answer out
there and the name is meditation. Meditation has changed the lives of many individuals ranging in
different disorders. This article will review the interview conducted with Transcendental Meditation
teachers of Nancy and Thomas, which occurred on February 29, 2016. The interview was located at
their house located on 920 Imperial Drive Mohnton, PA 19540 where they also conduct their
teaching. The overall goal of this paper is to demonstrate that meditation offers multiple benefits as
an alternative treatment to those who suffer from mental disorders.

The study focused on eleven individuals, seven where screened but only five completed the trail.
The individuals who ranged from 18 to 65 years of age, and suffered from PTSD for more than one
year. The duration of the study lasted 12 weeks, this included an 8–week assessment and data
collection. The individuals were taught the technique of TM, which took, on average, 60 to 90
minutes. The individuals were expected to practice at home for 20 mins twice per day. Subjects
reported improvements in their sleep along with statements of feeling "more alive", "happier",
"deeply rested", "having more peace at life ", and "having a big weight lifted from my shoulders"

Sleep serves several different functions throughout the brain and body such as repair or growth,
learning, memory consolidation, and restorative processes affecting behavioral, physiological and
neurocognitive processes (Kruger JM, Obal F 2003; Bennington JH, 2000).
Memory formation could be considered as "the process of acquiring information (such as facts,
experiences, actions, skills, etc.) and modifying that knowledge over time, expressed behaviorally as
learning" (Walker, 2005). A widely accepted, an increasingly researched mechanism of memory
formation is brain "plasticity," a change in neuronal properties (such as structure and function) in
response to a stimulus such as experience. The mechanisms of plasticity itself is extensive ranging
from the reorganization of cortical networks at molecular levels, the inhibition and disinhibition of
existing circuitry, modification of synaptic strengths, and the structural modeling of synaptic
connections (Buonomano and Merzenich, 1998; Martin et all, 2000; and Pascual–Leone 2001).

Practical Philosophy And Conversational Counseling
Practical Philosophy and Conversational Counseling For the past 5 years the writer, on a volunteer
and informal basis has been given access to clients of a Homeless Shelter, Veterans Residential
Center and Addiction Treatment Center in Phoenix, Arizona. At these locations the writer has
conducted individual and group weekly sessions with an emphasis on the abuse of alcohol and drugs
utilizing Practical Philosophy and Conversational Counseling to supplement meditation sessions.
Group size averages around 10 participants. In order to compare effectiveness of Practical
Philosophy and Conversational Counseling with participants who have no known current diagnosis
of alcohol and/or drug abuse, the writer has during the same period conducted a group comprised of
successful business men and women also in Phoenix, Arizona meeting on a weekly basis.
Additionally, one time per month an Open Meditation group is held, open to all. Up to 20
individuals attend this group. Individuals and participants in all three group categories respond
favorably to the experience of supplementing meditation with Practical Philosophy and
Conversational Counseling. Particularly appreciated is the opportunity to share personal reflections
of the meditative experience together with discussions on matters that are personally relevant to

My initial impression of TM was great. As I am always looking for ways to expand my
consciousness and become enlightened I was very interested. The instructor had very positive things
to say, and appeared to be very enthusiastic about the practice. After seeing all of the celebrity
endorsements for the practice, I initially figured that there must be something worth–while behind
this form of meditation.
Overall, I would say that my perspective on TM has changed. Had I not needed to go do homework,
I probably would have signed up for instruction the same day. However, the more fact checking and

Reflection On Stress And Anxiety
On Wednesday, September 27, 2017, I attended a Stress and Anxiety workshop at the Miller
Learning Center in room 207 from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm. The event was hosted by University Health
Center Counseling and Psychiatric Services for personal enrichment. The purpose of this session
was to learn about new ways to manage stress and anxiety while maintaining a hectic schedule. As I
entered the room, there was a group of 30 diverse students – ones who I would assume had
everything under control. It became less nerve–racking as there were students ranging from
freshman to seniors, boys and girls, students of color – anxiety bonded us together. Our instructor,
Dr. Debra Kay Alvis, provided a calm and kind presence: soothing her audience after their long day
of stress. She broke her lecture into two sections: science and experiment.
The first component was the scientific aspect of stress and rising cortisol levels. By educating us on
how our body is functioning, we can understand the importance of meditation and breathing
exercises on our mental, emotional, and spiritual health. Cortisol is the stress hormone that interferes
with learning and memory, it lowers immune function and bone density, increases weight gain,
blood pressure, cholesterol, heart disease, etc. This hormone alerts the adrenal glands to increase the
production of adrenaline; adrenaline is responsible for the fight or flight response in humans which

The overall goal of this paper is to demonstrate that meditation offers multiple benefits as an alternative treatment to those who suffer from mental disorders. The event was hosted by University Health Center Counseling and Psychiatric Services for personal enrichment. The purpose of this session was to learn about new ways to manage stress and anxiety while maintaining a hectic schedule. As I entered the room, there was a group of 30 diverse students – ones who I would assume had everything under control. It became less nerve–racking as there were students ranging from freshman to seniors, boys and girls, students of color – anxiety bonded us together. Our instructor, Dr. Debra Kay Alvis, provided a calm and kind presence: soothing her audience after their long day of stress. She broke her lecture into two sections: science and experiment. The first component was the scientific aspect of stress and rising cortisol levels. By educating us on how our body is functioning, we can understand the importance of meditation and breathing exercises on our mental, emotional, and spiritual health.
