Bring Your Own Device
Training for Students
Student wireless access is here!
What is BYOD?
● Access to the Internet at school.
● BYOD awards the same set of
permissions as if you are on a school
computer.
● Internet usage on the BYOD network
is still monitored, as it is on a regular
school computer.
#It’sFinallyHere
Access
● By logging into the network, students
confirm they accept the terms and conditions
of the GCPS RUP (Responsible Use Policy).
● Users agree to uphold the contents of the
RUP as well as the Student Code of Conduct
on their own student-owned devices while
on school property.
*Failure to follow conduct code will result in restricted access
● GCPS will filter all content for
users connected to the GCPS
network at school.
Theft, Loss or Damage
● The owner is responsible for ensuring that
the device is safe and secure.
● GCPS is not responsible for any
maintenance, damage, theft, usage or usage
charges, or loss of this non-school-district
equipment.
#YouAreInCharge
Texting Fees
● GCPS is not responsible for any fees
associated with using any personal
technology devices.
● If a student chooses to use other functions
or features on his or her device, standard
fees may be billed by the student’s provider.
Frequently
Asked
Questions
How do I log in to the BYOD
network?
Use the same login/password you use for a school
computer and MYeClass!
(If you HAVE NOT reset your password this school year (either on MYeClass or
school computer), then you must do this before accessing wireless.)
Once you are authenticated, you will receive
filtered access to the Internet under RUP
guidelines.
● While on your
wireless device, go
to your connections
and choose the
“Student”
connection. Then
you will be
prompted to enter
your school login
code and password.
Use your network
login.
What can I use my device for?
Yes No
Class Projects and Assignments
Research
Online textbooks
The student portal – course pages,
online research library, grades, etc.
Teacher led assessments
… and more!
Access will be filtered, so if a site is
blocked on a school computer, it will
be blocked on the wireless network.
The Student Portal and BYOD
Remember: Your username and password for the portal = your username and password
for a school computer.
In the student portal, you can find:
-Teacher course pages
-Assignments
-Study Guides
-Calendar dates
-Dropbox tool
-Discussion tool
-Online textbooks
-Your GRADES
-Online Research Library
-Other useful tools (Classworks, Atlas, etc.)
Will I be able to charge my device
at school?
NO
Presently, no facilities are dedicated to
charging personal devices, with a limited
number of outlets available in any given
space. Students should
make it a point to charge
their technology prior to
coming to school each day.
What do I do if my device is
damaged or stolen?
● Even though you are TOTALLY responsible
for keeping your personal device safe and
secure, any time there is theft or damage,
you should notify your teacher or the
administration. GCPS is not liable or
responsible for any theft, damage, or loss of
any non-district device or the information on
any such device.
I have a data plan from an outside
provider on my device that allows
Internet access without the GCPS
network. Is this allowable?
NO
● BYOD is the ONLY allowable network on
personal devices. Students should not access
the Internet through any cellular data
provider while on school premises.
What if I can’t get my device
working on BYOD?
● GCPS employees are not permitted to
touch student devices and are not trained to
troubleshoot the many types of personal
devices that students may bring.
● Refer to your owner’s manual, the internet,
or a peer with the same device to help you
troubleshoot.
#YouAreOnYourOwn
When Can I Use My Device?
● Remember devices can only be used for educational
purposes.
● You may use your device when your teacher says you
can. Your teacher may use signs such as these:
NO! YES!
Some Helpful
Tips
ALWAYS be mindful of your device at all
times. Do not walk away and leave it on a
desk or visible when not in use. You are
responsible for your device at all times!
Charge your device
before coming to
school. You will not
be allowed to use
the wall outlets in
school for charging.
Keep your phone in airplane
mode when you are not
using it to preserve your
battery life.
Understand how to work your device before
coming to school and using it in class!
Remember, teachers and staff cannot help/fix
your personal device, should you need it.
