Ellen Star s Hull House
The Hull House was founded in 1889 by Jane Addams and Ellen Star after Addams was inspired by
Toynbee Hall during a trip to London. Both women were interested in social welfare and reform and
decided to start a similar endeavor after the opportunity presented itself when Addams received a free
25 year lease on a mansion from Helen Culver. Culver had been gifted this mansion by her uncle,
Charles Hull, due to the the deteriorating neighborhood which is why it was called the Hull House.
The location was perfect for the social experiment Addams and Star had envisioned. It began as a
small project to improve lives of local working class people through educational and social
opportunities. It quickly grew into something much larger and left a ... Show more content on

Addams and Star volunteered as doctors and midwives when the professionals were either unavailable
or unwilling to help. This was a service sorely needed for those too poor to afford a doctor or were
refused treatment such as when an Irish Catholic woman had a child out of wedlock no Irish midwives
would deliver. In addition to offering services, they also supplied facilities the entire public could
enjoy such as a playground, bathhouse, gym and a public dispensary that provided free nutritious food
to the sick. Also, they worked hard to assimilate immigrants into American culture and were extremely
successful, especially with children. They did this mainly through the courses mentioned earlier,
promoting hand workmanship as a moral regenerative force and helping those that came through their
doors learn necessary skills for the workforce and then helping them find gainful employment. As
mentioned earlier, they had a small theater where anyone could put on shows. This has been attributed
by many historians to be the roots of both Chicago s improvisational theatre scene and the American
Little Theater movement. Finally, the work accomplished at the Hull House had a profound affect on
the progressive movement. The Hull House offered a unique environment that encouraged women to
be social activists and step outside the expected mold. Many well known and celebrated female
reformers began their careers at

Leading Positive Change
1. The TED talks videos of Simon Sinek and Rosabeth Moss Kanter provided me with valuable
information when it comes to inspiring others to follow your lead, as well as knowing the six
important keys to leading positive change. From Simon Sinek s presentation, I learned that the best
way to inspire others is by understanding how we lead and communicate with one another by focusing
on what others can believe in. Sinek made it clear in his presentation that the Golden Circle of why,
how, and what are what some organizations like Apple have mastered in inspired individuals to action.
Most organizations that fail to inspire others, like his example of TiVo, normally focus on telling
individuals what their products do, but the organization ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I do agree with this idea that if we are motivated by why we are doing something in particular for the
greater good, our actions or products will be more valuable to those around us. One of Kanter s keys
to leading to positive change that stood out to me the most was to never give up. I tend to be very hard
on myself when I am faced with an obstacle that I would consider a failure, but according to Kanter s
Law is only considered a failure if you give up. It is important to remain engaged by pushing forward
even if it takes longer than imagined because the mindset of not giving up is what Kanter considers a
hallmark of leaders . This is an important key is many of us, including myself, tend to forget that not
everything in life is perfect so it is important for us to keeping working harder to reach our goals.
Kanter s other key, which I believe is extremely important to implement in our lives to lead positive
change is to lift other up. By sharing success and credit is what helps any environment to have the
ability to be able to accomplish any task over and over successfully. I strongly agree with this idea
because I have always felt that there is always power in numbers, and if everyone is working together
by supporting one another anything can be

The Great Depression in Alex Kershaw s The Bedford Boys
Bedford Boys 1. How did the Great Depression affect the town of Bedford before the war? What
programs were offered in the town to help alleviate the Depression? How did it motivate many of the
men to join the National Guard? The Great Depression affected people all over the United States of
America and the people of the town of Bedford, Virginia perhaps worse than many others. Bedford, in
the time before the Great Depression, had an economy that was primarily based upon agriculture. One
family from Bedford, the Stevens boys, was an example of the people who were financially
destabilized by the Depression (Kershaw 2003, 10). The banks often foreclosed on lands which had
been in the hands of local families for generations, making scores of people homeless and without
employment. Everyone was called upon to do whatever was possible to make ends meet. One man,
Dickie Overstreet, had somehow gotten by in the worst years of the Depression through supplying
vegetables and meat to Dickie s aunt, who owned the Dutch Inn, a boardinghouse in Bedford
(Kershaw 2003, 60). Some people sold their property and took whatever jobs were available. People s
pride and vanity soon vanished when it became apparent that the alternative was starvation and
destitution. With the administration of Franklin Delano Roosevelt and the implementation of the New
Deal works projects, things became better for many people in Bedford and throughout the nation. One
of the potential job opportunities for

Who Is Responsible For Cleopatra s Downfall
Raina Rodriguez
Cleopatra
Being the most powerful person to rule an area is difficult, but to be female and to be the very last
ruler is even more troubling. Cleopatra, a name known to many, was an Egyptian ruler and last true
pharaoh of Egypt. Cleopatra was born in 69 BC in Alexandria, Egypt to the last dynasty in her family.
Many people have speculated what Cleopatra s ethnicity is, and she very likely has Greek descent and
African background. By the age of 14, Cleopatra had gained joint regent with her father and
eventually after his passing, gained joint monarchy along with her brother, age 10, and herself at the
age of 18. Due to ritual customs, she married her brother and then decided she wanted sole power.

Cleopatra had tried to create a rebellious uprising that had failed and caused her to flee. While in exile,
Pompey was involved in the Roman Civil War, and was eventually killed under Ptolemy s orders; this
was done so Ptolemy could get closer to Julius Caesar. Caesar was presented with Pompey s beheaded
head and was furious because he was the widower of Caesar s only daughter, so, he captured the
Egyptian capital in a rage. This capture meant Ptolemy was dethroned and he was the mediator
between Ptolemy and Cleopatra. Cleopatra had come close to Caesar, causing him to not annex Egypt
and instead help her reclaim the throne. Caesar eventually brought Cleopatra to visit Rome, creating
an outrage due to him being already married. Cleopatra and Julius had a son, Caesarion, who later
succeeded the throne along with Cleopatra. Eventually, Cleopatra went to Italy to build a base for
Caesarion forces, causing her to meet Antony. Antony s conquest of Armenia allowed Cleopatra
Caesarion to be crowned rulers of Egypt and

White Australia Policy Essay
General Overview
Introduction
Australia...The Lucky Country, or so they thought. This act was racial, Australia were trying to create
a white utopia, a paradox forged against the odds. Modern Australia is a multicultural Country,
however, this wasn t the plan, over 100 years ago, an act was put into place to create a White society.
This was infuriating for the non white and non Europeans. This was called the Immigration
Restriction act which is now known as the White Australian Policy (WAP). This changed the race of
Australia s face. In modern day Australia over 22 million people now live in this beautiful Country
that has an equal society.

Marshall Mathers
Marshall Mathers, better known as Eminem, was born on October 17, 1972 in St. Joseph, Missouri to
a single mother. He spent the majority of his youth living in various states before eventually settling
down in the harsh streets of Detroit at the age of 12. At age nine, Em was first introduced to rap by his
Uncle Ronni who played the Breakin soundtrack for him and immediately Em loved it. He began
obsessively studying and lip synching LL Cool J s and Ice T s skilled and complex rhyme schemes
and styles. At a young age Em found his niche now all he had to do was discover his voice.

Although he finished second, his freestyles impressed many including Paul Rosenberg who later
became his manager and Interscope label president Jimmy Iovine. Later that year he won the Wake Up
Show s Freestyle Performer of the Year and was featured in Source s Unsigned Hype column. After
these honors, Rosenberg and Iovine were convinced that Em would be the future of rap. All they now
needed was confirmation, so they took Em s material to the legendary producer/rapper Dr. Dre.
Immediately, Dr. Dre loved Em s creative rhymes and lyrics. After Dre got over the initial shock of
that Em was white, they worked out a deal and Em joined Aftermath, Dre s record company. With Dre
by his side there was no looking back. They immediately hit it off and his first album on Aftermath,
The Slim Shady LP, hit stores in early 1999. With the multi platinum single, My Name Is , The Slim
Shady LP went triple platinum. This was the beginning of a new era in rap, a rap revolution started by
the high school dropout, Eminem.
A lab rat, Em went right back to work on his next album. His hunger for success was now at an all
time high. The Marshall Mathers LP blew up from day one and debuted number 1 on the Billboard
Charts selling close to two million copies in its first week. This established him as the most successful

Analysis Of Unnatural Causes
Why do some of us tend to get sicker more often or die sooner, and what factors causes us to even
become sick in the first place? This series called Unnatural Causes is a timely, informative and
passionately made documentary. It convincingly connects all the dots between health, race, class,
economics and social policy and comes to the conclusion that capitalism is making us sick. This is a
documentary that will provoke anger, discussion, and debate. That is a good thing, because there are
over 47 million uninsured in America and the crisis in health care is at the top of the domestic agenda.
On average, people at the top live longer, healthier lives. Those at the bottom are more disempowered,
get sicker more often and a lot of times, die sooner. We also see how racial inequality imposes an
additional risk burden on people of color which takes place in Louisville, Kentucky . (Unnatural
Causes, 2008) Mary Turner, is one of many that lives in a poor neighborhood of Louisville. In the
documentary, we see her trying to support her three children as well as her husband on disability. She
also has health complications of her own that prevents her from working. Mary lives her life on a tight
budget to keep her family fed and housed. When it comes to her $200.00 budget to feeding her family,
she often times has to settle for processed or frozen foods which is actually very bad for your health in
the long run. Processed foods are usually loaded with added sugar... or its evil

Internal Medicine Internist Personal Statement
It was 2011 when the revolution burst out. I was studying for my pharmacology exam when I saw on
TV that people were getting injured and shot. There were a lot of field hospitals and volunteering
doctors that I knew. I wanted to go there and assist the injured, but I knew that my lack of medical
training would not allow me to do that. Since then I have been thinking of the best medical field to
help and be useful in the future. Internists are who people think of when they think of a doctor and
after having the opportunity to rotate through different specialties during my internship, I realized that
internal medicine exemplifies what I look upon to be, a compassionate, respected, and insightful
physician. When Internists go to work, they do not know what to ... Show more content on

It is the intellectual challenge every day and the opportunity to provide continuous care for the
patients that make internal medicine extremely appealing to me. I believe that with the knowledge that

two months with him, during which I realized that in spite of the limited time he had, he always took
the time to explain and give support to his patients. He had to manage inpatients as well as ICU
patients simultaneously, but he always knew how to manage the patients and support their families in
addition to teaching us. All the patients respected him and knew they were in safe hands with him.
This was the doctor I would like to follow in footsteps, a doctor who is sensible, well informed and

Arguement For Rewarding Human Organs
Many people believe that they should be rewarded for saving another person s life by donating an
organ for them, claiming that they had a choice, so they should be praised for making the right
decision to give it away! Well, if that s true, then we should be rewarded for picking up garbage that
we dropped, or washing our hands after we use the restroom. People aren t ordinarily rewarded, or
praised, for something we are already expected to do. But, that is what is expected to happen when

What Is Moral Idealism In Antigone
Simone de Beauvoir s Moral Idealism and Political Realism interprets Sophocles Antigone by
emphasizing the importance of accepting failure and fear in order to improve our understanding and
knowledge, rather than running away from the unknown. Sophocles centralizes around the concepts of
fate and wisdom to argue for and to promote the idea that while you can foresee your fate it is
impossible to avoid. If every result or decision was preordained unable to change throughout the
course of fate then what is the purpose of knowledge and education?
Sophocles, through the usage of a tragedy, uses the concepts of wisdom and fate to emphasize the

Television Is An American Staple Essay
Television is an American staple. According to Mitchell Stephens, Professor of Journalism and Mass
Communication at New York University, Television as we know it, was first introduced in 1927.
(Stevens) currently over 98% of American households have at least 1 television set and the average
American watches around 3 to 4 hours of television daily. The thought that television can entertain
and inform as well as influence is equally powerful and disturbing. As early as the 1920 s, Thomas
Edison recognized the potential of television as medium of influence. He stated the motion picture is
destined to revolutionize our educational system and...in a few years it will supplant largely, if not
entirely, the use of textbooks ( qtd in Fabos). After hearing a song on the radio or a commercial jingle
on TV more than 1000 times, that tune just gets stuck in your head. Similarly, the portrayals of
television programs become part of our being and therefore can subtly influence attitudes behaviors
and ultimately values. Sometimes these changes are for the better, sometimes not. Before the airing of
the Edmond Pettis Bridge incident, where peaceful civil rights protesters, including women and
children, who along with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr,. were marching from Selma to Montgomery, were
attacked with high pressure fire hose spay, police dogs and officers with batons, the world knew little

Summary Of Coach Fitz Management Theory
The essay Coach Fitz Management Theory was written by Michael Lewis and the stories mentioned
were based on past and present comparisons. Most of the ideologies strictly informed that the process
is essential, and while Fitz talks about winning, it is the desire and not the victory that is important.
There are many examples that refer back to the different statements about winning versus the process.
Valuing the process towards a particular goal and perfecting that process will provide you with the
success desired. On the other hand, the ability to provide the process, which includes self motivation
and hard work necessary. The different writing techniques used to give off different perspectives for
the reader to understand. The essay mainly intended the reader to understand the level of entitlement
that parents have with a team and the goals/process that must be met in order to win.
The various approaches to coaching and how much authority parents had depending on how involved
they were. Transitions, such as closers or openers most of the paragraphs cause readers to be lost in
the in the wrong areas and a quick switch of the setting hurt the initial and long term meaning of the
essay.
A firm belief Coach Fitz has throughout the essay is to win. You know what I think about second
place? he said. Here s what I think about second place. And he slammed the trophy against the floor
(Lewis). This ultimately shows that winning and getting in the first place is a big part

My Native Costume By Gentileschi
Once, there was a woman who claimed that her identity is like the spirit of Caesar. She was raped
when she was nineteen, and public condemned her of losing her virtue, even though virtue is not a
woman s consumable good that can be achieved by purity or lost by accident. This reaction is similar
to that of school teacher in the poem of MartĂn Espada, My Native Costume. In the poem, the teacher
asks the writer to wear traditional costume for the students even though the writer defines himself as a
lawyer. She is full of prejudice that Puerto Rican people will always wear traditional clothes, but she
rather thinks that she is doing a good job for her students while saying the children want to see a
native costume (Espada). Probably the public ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Judith Slaying Holofernes is one of her masterpieces that has been acknowledged as a proper piece to
understand the main characteristics of her painting style. Carol Strickland, an American art historian,
explains that this painting shows how Gentileschi depicted her subject into the style of Caravaggio,
who was her father s teacher and famous for dramatic lightning (Strickland, 47). Based on these facts,
some critics conjecture that Gentileschi may just have borrowed the dramatic story from the Book of
Judith to express her technique that resembled that of Caravaggio. They argue that it is unreasonable
and too subjective to relate Judith Slaying Holofernes with the identity of Gentileschi. Identity of
Gentileschi, however, cannot be separated with the story of Judith and the painting Judith Slaying
Holofernes because Gentileschi s identity severely resembles that of Judith. Their struggle, success
leaded by their capacity, and destruction of the gender stereotypes are main common aspects that
Judith and Gentileschi share. These qualities further prove how Artemisia Gentileschi was an ideal
feminist who asserted her freedom inside an unfair

Avatar the movie has many stories behind it, comparing it to the real world. In relation to Avatar, when
deforestation occurs it will kill the animal s natural habitat and humans honestly don t care. Humans
will destroy anything, that is beneficial towards them, and in this case deforestation will happen. Due
to deforestation, animals lose their home making it quite difficult to survive in a new environment. It s
harder for animals to adapt, this can lead to animal extinction that will affect everyone because life is a
cycle, and animals are part of it. When comparing the environment to reality vs unreality, in Avatar the
movie, you realize the significance behind it. In the movie the character Neytiri (one of the Na Vi
people she s similar to a princess because her dad is a the leader) reacts towards an animal saying
Forgive me, my brother. She cuts its throat, ending the pitiful cries. She touches its head gently,
regarding it with sadness. ( Cameron 39). This showing whether it was plants or animals, the Na vi

(Gerken) . Humans are the main reason of deforestation and well this another reason that animals are
going extinct. We re killing their homes for our needs, and instead we should find an alternate. Also,
according to the World Wildlife Fund, Habitat loss is probably the greatest threat to the variety of life
on this planet today. It is identified as a main threat to 85% of all species (Latham). The world s forest
continue to disappear as they as consumed for human consumption and cleared to make for human
needs. This type of destruction of forest is serious because of the habitat lost, ecosystem, and the food

How they Dress: In Lucy the outfits are very generic or what you would expect at the time. The girls
would dress up to look cute and nice and the men would be in suits and usually look very formal. In
Modern family they all would dress sort of like how we would. Very casually and no one really sticks
out from one another when it would come to comparing clothes.

time. The Men would be the busy business men in there suits going and working and coming home to

is a person who does not follow the rules of the road while driving, maybe someone should tell them
to do all of their distractions before starting the car or just wait till you arrive at the destination you are
going. The rules of the road need to be enforced, especially when it comes to seat belts, drinking and

By the same token, 71 percent of respondents believe that drinking and driving is more dangerous than
distracted driving (Harvey). Drinking can make people react slower and make it hard for people to see
straight. If a person has to pull over and they are drinking and driving, and they are smaller sized
people they will be way more intoxicated than a heavier person, because heavier people can dilute
alcohol faster. However, if a person is drinking and driving and if the police catch them, they have to
use the breathalyzer and if they blow a 0.8 or more they will be taken to jail. If someone is caught
drinking and driving they will receive a DUI (Driving under the influence) and they may have their
licenses suspended. Therefore, if someone is drinking at a friends house they either need to wait to go
home until they are sober or they need to call someone that is not drinking and or they just need to
stay where they are so they do not risk their life or someone else s. Meanwhile, sometimes instead of
doing the breathalyzer, the officers might make them do a blood test, urine test. However, the officers
that pulled them over may make them walk the line to see if they can walk straight (White 23). In
conclusion, drinking and driving is not worth someone s

Rhetorical Analysis Of Pharmaceutical Innovation Can We...
Rhetorical Analysis: Pharmaceutical Innovation In Joel Lexchin s article Pharmaceutical innovation:
Can we live forever? A commentary on Schnittker and Karandinos he addresses the article made by
Schnittker and Karandinos about the progression of pharmaceuticals and whether or not we have
advanced enough to significantly increase our life expectancy. Lexchin uses a plethora of rhetoric to
persuade the reader into believing his argument, mostly relying upon logos, chiefly facts, to appeal to
the logical and sensible side of the readers. His argument is not limited to logos though, as there are
faint traces of pathos, the longing to live forever, as well as ethos, society s needs for further advances,
to further convince the reader. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is an extremely powerful tool, as when one sees numbers such as the ones previously stated, that
look very logical, it is hard not to believe them. Unconvinced that we really will be saved by
innovation , Lexchin continues to describe the results of an experiment done involving the treatments
of patients with similar underlying conditions by both Canada and the United States. The results of
which, favoured Canada, which leads to some very difficult questions; if the US has considerably
greater care units than Canada, as well as a higher NME approval rate, why is the life expectancy
higher? While throwing logic at us from every angle, Lexchin also manages to appeal to our deeper
desires. He plays on humans yearning for eternal youth and immortality, as well as our fear of death.
Immortality is a common goal of society and Lexchin uses is as a tool to get the reader to listen to his
argument. With a respectable argument against the idea of pharmaceutical advances eventually leading
to immortality, Lexchin uses multiple forms of rhetoric, mostly logos, to sway the readers. He sets our
deep fantasies of someday being able to live forever against our rational minds and backs up his case
with sound logic and viable examples that leave us no doubts about human limitation.

Maupassant s The Necklace
In Guy de Maupassant s The Necklace Mathilde Loisel, a middle class housewife, fantasizes about
leading a life of wealth. Mme. Loisel is a proud woman. She feels herself born for all the delicacies
and all the luxuries . Since she was born into a middle class family, she lacks access to the comforts of
an upper class life. Thinking that her beauty should earn her a higher place in society, she is
discontent. She stopped seeing her wealthy former schoolmate because she suffered ceaselessly when
she came back. Seeing Mme. Forestier, whom Loisel had once viewed as a peer, in a higher social
status than herself disgusts Loisel. She attempts to make a good outward appearance to others in order
to make up for her contempt for her social ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Loisel s pride causes her to make her first mistake shortly before the ball. Committed to the belief that
there s nothing more humiliating than to look poor around other women who are rich, she decides that
to merely have a dress is not good enough. She tells her husband that she wants jewelry. So she asks
her old school friend (whom she otherwise avoids) if she can borrow a necklace, which as far as she
knows may be worth thirty six thousand francs. She uses this necklace at the ball, dancing with other
men than her husband, while he sleeps in the back room. Between the hours in a crowded ballroom
and the long walk to find a cab in the night, it was not at all improbable that the seemingly valuable
necklace would have been stolen. Whether the necklace is stolen or just misplaced, it is indeed lost.
Had she stopped to think, Mme. Loisel may have realized that there was some risk in borrowing a
necklace that she thought was so expensive. Also, the impression she makes at the ball would not
likely have much bearing on her life later on. Her refusal to wear natural roses shows us that one of
her worst fears is to appear poor. Thus to prevent injury to her pride she makes a gamble in which
winning will bring little, and losing, although the chance of such is overlooked, has drastic

Criticism Of Emma s Stereotypes
During the elections, Queen Emma faced much criticism in the islands for her gender, background,
and character. In a letter written by Curtis Jere Lyons, he says on the native bulletin, the words We do
not wish to see the petticoat putting on breeches (or inside of the breeches) were written above the
Queen s proclamation . By referring to clothes and dress, these words were attacking Queen Emma s
gender. Whoever wrote it did not want to see a woman as ruling monarch. In addition, an article
published in The Chicago Tribune in 1874 speaking about the elections states, The popularity... is
purely personal, as she has no hereditary rank and little force of character . Claiming that Queen

Also, despite Queen Emma being more closely related to Kamehameha I than David Kalākaua, the
author of the article states she has no hereditary rank. These words are meant to criticize and depict
Queen Emma as an unqualified candidate. Similar to how Queen Emma was portrayed, current female
politicians are often also portrayed as cold, indifferent women unsuited for office. During the 2016 US
Presidential Elections, candidate Hillary Clinton faced immense, sexist criticism from media, society,
and President Trump himself. Clinton had been labeled a nasty woman , untrustworthy , and a criminal
throughout her campaign. Many female politicians face similar sentiments and remarks. In fact,
according to Terri Vescio, a psychology professor at Penn State University, The more female
politicians are seen as striving for power, the less

Film Adaptation of Hamlet
Adapted from Shakespeare s play Hamlet, the film Hamlet was produced in 1996. It was directed by
Kenneth Branagh. The main characters include Kenneth Branagh who starred as Prince Hamlet, Kate
Winslet as Ophelia, Derek Jacobi as King Claudius, Julie Christie as Queen Gertrude, Richard Briers
as Polonius, Nicholas Farrell as Horatio and Michael Maloney as Laertes. In the middle of the film
there is a scene where Prince Hamlet is shown alone in a room contemplating whether or not he
should avenge his father s death, how he should go about doing and how unfortunate it is that he finds
himself in this position. At that moment, Hamlet is so torn that he appears to be going mad. So much
so that when the girl he loves, Ophelia, whom is sent by King Claudius and Queen Gertrude to speak
to Hamlet, approached him, he declared to her that he never loved her. He pressed her hard against the
mirror forcing her to face who she has become. He sent her away telling her and she should enter a
nunnery and that it would please him to ban marriage altogether. I believe that Hamlet s delay in
seeking revenge for his father shows indeed a strength in his character. That is because it proves that
Hamlet was a moral and rational man, he did not remain inactive and Hamlet was a man ahead of his
time (Utter 140) First, Hamlet was a highly intelligent, moral and rational man. I believe that was the
reason behind his procrastination. A moral and rational man does not take the decision to kill a person

Theme Of Dreams In The Epic Of Gilgamesh
Since the beginning of time, every being on Earth has slept. Along with sleeping, dreams appear. From
the mind, dreams come and can often show one s deepest thoughts. These dreams have endless
interpretations and an impact on future actions. Because dreams can mean anything and are the
foundation for more intense feelings, dreams were used in the earliest form of literature. The Epic of
Gilgamesh uses the concept of dreams to explain Gilgamesh s future ambitions. Gilgamesh s dreams
provide visions compiled of different ideas and the way he interprets those dreams affect the decisions
he makes.
In one of Gilgamesh s dreams, he views a meteor, fell down from heaven (Sanders 2). Then his
mother, Ninsun, announces it is Gilgamesh s brother, Enkidu. However, Ninsun takes from his dream
that she created Enkidu and he will love Gilgamesh forever. These discoveries indicate whoever is the
meteor is going to be Gilgamesh s family. Although Gilgamesh feels loved, he doesn t feel the
companionship that his mother feels with Enkidu. It is also believed as symbolism for the life death
cycle (Garth 13). This symbol is the constant circle of life and death. When one dies, another comes
onto Earth. Gilgamesh s has died in a sense and Enkidu was born to help rebuild Gilgamesh. This is
hinted because Enkidu has been created, and has started a new life for both himself and Gilgamesh.
More or less, this dream started a chain of events.
This cause and effect sequence started the course of

  • 2. Ellen Star s Hull House The Hull House was founded in 1889 by Jane Addams and Ellen Star after Addams was inspired by Toynbee Hall during a trip to London. Both women were interested in social welfare and reform and decided to start a similar endeavor after the opportunity presented itself when Addams received a free 25 year lease on a mansion from Helen Culver. Culver had been gifted this mansion by her uncle, Charles Hull, due to the the deteriorating neighborhood which is why it was called the Hull House. The location was perfect for the social experiment Addams and Star had envisioned. It began as a small project to improve lives of local working class people through educational and social opportunities. It quickly grew into something much larger and left a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Addams and Star volunteered as doctors and midwives when the professionals were either unavailable or unwilling to help. This was a service sorely needed for those too poor to afford a doctor or were refused treatment such as when an Irish Catholic woman had a child out of wedlock no Irish midwives would deliver. In addition to offering services, they also supplied facilities the entire public could enjoy such as a playground, bathhouse, gym and a public dispensary that provided free nutritious food to the sick. Also, they worked hard to assimilate immigrants into American culture and were extremely successful, especially with children. They did this mainly through the courses mentioned earlier, promoting hand workmanship as a moral regenerative force and helping those that came through their doors learn necessary skills for the workforce and then helping them find gainful employment. As mentioned earlier, they had a small theater where anyone could put on shows. This has been attributed by many historians to be the roots of both Chicago s improvisational theatre scene and the American Little Theater movement. Finally, the work accomplished at the Hull House had a profound affect on the progressive movement. The Hull House offered a unique environment that encouraged women to be social activists and step outside the expected mold. Many well known and celebrated female reformers began their careers at ... • 4. Leading Positive Change 1. The TED talks videos of Simon Sinek and Rosabeth Moss Kanter provided me with valuable information when it comes to inspiring others to follow your lead, as well as knowing the six important keys to leading positive change. From Simon Sinek s presentation, I learned that the best way to inspire others is by understanding how we lead and communicate with one another by focusing on what others can believe in. Sinek made it clear in his presentation that the Golden Circle of why, how, and what are what some organizations like Apple have mastered in inspired individuals to action. Most organizations that fail to inspire others, like his example of TiVo, normally focus on telling individuals what their products do, but the organization ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I do agree with this idea that if we are motivated by why we are doing something in particular for the greater good, our actions or products will be more valuable to those around us. One of Kanter s keys to leading to positive change that stood out to me the most was to never give up. I tend to be very hard on myself when I am faced with an obstacle that I would consider a failure, but according to Kanter s Law is only considered a failure if you give up. It is important to remain engaged by pushing forward even if it takes longer than imagined because the mindset of not giving up is what Kanter considers a hallmark of leaders . This is an important key is many of us, including myself, tend to forget that not everything in life is perfect so it is important for us to keeping working harder to reach our goals. Kanter s other key, which I believe is extremely important to implement in our lives to lead positive change is to lift other up. By sharing success and credit is what helps any environment to have the ability to be able to accomplish any task over and over successfully. I strongly agree with this idea because I have always felt that there is always power in numbers, and if everyone is working together by supporting one another anything can be ... • 5. The Great Depression in Alex Kershaw s The Bedford Boys Bedford Boys 1. How did the Great Depression affect the town of Bedford before the war? What programs were offered in the town to help alleviate the Depression? How did it motivate many of the men to join the National Guard? The Great Depression affected people all over the United States of America and the people of the town of Bedford, Virginia perhaps worse than many others. Bedford, in the time before the Great Depression, had an economy that was primarily based upon agriculture. One family from Bedford, the Stevens boys, was an example of the people who were financially destabilized by the Depression (Kershaw 2003, 10). The banks often foreclosed on lands which had been in the hands of local families for generations, making scores of people homeless and without employment. Everyone was called upon to do whatever was possible to make ends meet. One man, Dickie Overstreet, had somehow gotten by in the worst years of the Depression through supplying vegetables and meat to Dickie s aunt, who owned the Dutch Inn, a boardinghouse in Bedford (Kershaw 2003, 60). Some people sold their property and took whatever jobs were available. People s pride and vanity soon vanished when it became apparent that the alternative was starvation and destitution. With the administration of Franklin Delano Roosevelt and the implementation of the New Deal works projects, things became better for many people in Bedford and throughout the nation. • 10. Analysis Of Unnatural Causes Why do some of us tend to get sicker more often or die sooner, and what factors causes us to even become sick in the first place? This series called Unnatural Causes is a timely, informative and passionately made documentary. It convincingly connects all the dots between health, race, class, economics and social policy and comes to the conclusion that capitalism is making us sick. This is a documentary that will provoke anger, discussion, and debate. That is a good thing, because there are over 47 million uninsured in America and the crisis in health care is at the top of the domestic agenda. On average, people at the top live longer, healthier lives. Those at the bottom are more disempowered, get sicker more often and a lot of times, die sooner. We also see how racial inequality imposes an additional risk burden on people of color which takes place in Louisville, Kentucky . (Unnatural Causes, 2008) Mary Turner, is one of many that lives in a poor neighborhood of Louisville. In the documentary, we see her trying to support her three children as well as her husband on disability. She also has health complications of her own that prevents her from working. There were a lot of field hospitals and volunteering doctors that I knew. I wanted to go there and assist the injured, but I knew that my lack of medical training would not allow me to do that. Since then I have been thinking of the best medical field to help and be useful in the future. Internists are who people think of when they think of a doctor and after having the opportunity to rotate through different specialties during my internship, I realized that internal medicine exemplifies what I look upon to be, a compassionate, respected, and insightful physician. What Is Moral Idealism In Antigone Simone de Beauvoir s Moral Idealism and Political Realism interprets Sophocles Antigone by emphasizing the importance of accepting failure and fear in order to improve our understanding and knowledge, rather than running away from the unknown. Sophocles centralizes around the concepts of fate and wisdom to argue for and to promote the idea that while you can foresee your fate it is impossible to avoid. If every result or decision was preordained unable to change throughout the course of fate then what is the purpose of knowledge and education? • 17. Television Is An American Staple Essay Television is an American staple. According to Mitchell Stephens, Professor of Journalism and Mass Communication at New York University, Television as we know it, was first introduced in 1927. (Stevens) currently over 98% of American households have at least 1 television set and the average American watches around 3 to 4 hours of television daily. The thought that television can entertain and inform as well as influence is equally powerful and disturbing. As early as the 1920 s, Thomas Edison recognized the potential of television as medium of influence. He stated the motion picture is destined to revolutionize our educational system and...in a few years it will supplant largely, if not entirely, the use of textbooks ( qtd in Fabos). After hearing a song on the radio or a commercial jingle on TV more than 1000 times, that tune just gets stuck in your head. Similarly, the portrayals of television programs become part of our being and therefore can subtly influence attitudes behaviors and ultimately values. Sometimes these changes are for the better, sometimes not. Before the airing of the Edmond Pettis Bridge incident, where peaceful civil rights protesters, including women and children, who along with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr,. were marching from Selma to Montgomery, were attacked with high pressure fire hose spay, police dogs and officers with batons, the world knew little about the vehement treatment of an entire race of people. She was raped when she was nineteen, and public condemned her of losing her virtue, even though virtue is not a woman s consumable good that can be achieved by purity or lost by accident. This reaction is similar to that of school teacher in the poem of MartĂn Espada, My Native Costume. In the poem, the teacher asks the writer to wear traditional costume for the students even though the writer defines himself as a lawyer. Judith Slaying Holofernes is one of her masterpieces that has been acknowledged as a proper piece to understand the main characteristics of her painting style. Carol Strickland, an American art historian, explains that this painting shows how Gentileschi depicted her subject into the style of Caravaggio, who was her father s teacher and famous for dramatic lightning (Strickland, 47). Based on these facts, some critics conjecture that Gentileschi may just have borrowed the dramatic story from the Book of Judith to express her technique that resembled that of Caravaggio. They argue that it is unreasonable and too subjective to relate Judith Slaying Holofernes with the identity of Gentileschi. Identity of Gentileschi, however, cannot be separated with the story of Judith and the painting Judith Slaying Holofernes because Gentileschi s identity severely resembles that of Judith. Their struggle, success leaded by their capacity, and destruction of the gender stereotypes are main common aspects that Judith and Gentileschi share. • 31. Theme Of Dreams In The Epic Of Gilgamesh Since the beginning of time, every being on Earth has slept. Along with sleeping, dreams appear. From the mind, dreams come and can often show one s deepest thoughts. These dreams have endless interpretations and an impact on future actions. Because dreams can mean anything and are the foundation for more intense feelings, dreams were used in the earliest form of literature. The Epic of Gilgamesh uses the concept of dreams to explain Gilgamesh s future ambitions. Gilgamesh s dreams provide visions compiled of different ideas and the way he interprets those dreams affect the decisions he makes. In one of Gilgamesh s dreams, he views a meteor, fell down from heaven (Sanders 2). Then his mother, Ninsun, announces it is Gilgamesh s brother, Enkidu. However, Ninsun takes from his dream that she created Enkidu and he will love Gilgamesh forever. These discoveries indicate whoever is the meteor is going to be Gilgamesh s family. Although Gilgamesh feels loved, he doesn t feel the companionship that his mother feels with Enkidu. It is also believed as symbolism for the life death cycle (Garth 13). This symbol is the constant circle of life and death. When one dies, another comes onto Earth. Gilgamesh s has died in a sense and Enkidu was born to help rebuild Gilgamesh. This is hinted because Enkidu has been created, and has started a new life for both himself and Gilgamesh. More or less, this dream started a chain of events.
