Innovative Technologies and Tech TrendsBrian Pichman
RAILS Webinar on Innovative Technologies and Tech Trends
What are the current technology trends that everyone seems to be talking about? Join Brian Pichman of the Evolve Project as he leads us on a journey of technology and how you and your library can remain ahead as the world continues to innovate. Throughout this session, we will discuss various tech trends from home automation to robotics to wearables. Learn what “big data” and “data curation” are all about; discover gesture based computing, and what NFCs and RFIDs mean to us in the future. We will discussion how these technologies can impact libraries and which technologies we should embrace. At the end of this webinar; learn what is coming out in the future and also how you can stay informed of what’s up and coming. Presenter: Brian Pichman

Joy Mountford at BayCHI: Visualizations of Our Collective LivesBayCHI
The lines between art, design, and information are dissolving as we experience new places and objects. Consider, for example, the organic flow of air traffic over North America at daybreak, the bursts of search query memes spreading around the globe, and the pointillist surge of mobile phone usage on New Year's Eve. Using the new techniques of generative data visualization, a new generation of artist/designers/engineer/scientists are creating gorgeous, dynamic experiences driven by massive sets of data about our own lives. Their work comes to life in architectural spaces, on walls of wood and metal and light and shimmering glass clouds suspended overhead. Of course it must be touched to be appreciated and engaged with, simple gestures launch a thousand images and possibilities. Many of these projects have received international recognition. They are primarily 3D applications that can run in real time, but really can only be appreciated by watching them, as movies. These data movies aim to make information easier to understand while being enjoyable to watch. Surprising insights surface through looking at our 'data life' in new ways, and may compel us to design in different, even better ways.
Technology trends 2018 and beyond | PLAN Tech Day ConferenceBrian Pichman
Over the last few years, we’ve seen technology evolve in new and exciting ways. Join Brian Pichman of the Evolve Project as he highlights this year’s biggest technology trends and what those trends mean for libraries. What changes are we expecting to see in 2018, and what will be a fad, and what will be the hot tech everyone is talking about? From drones to virtual reality, to creating and innovating, and crazy new inventions — you’ll be left with lots of great ideas, how to stay informed, and how to prepare for what’s ahead.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
