2. What the Future Holds for
Technology
Technology, and likewise Education, is
changing before our very eyes.
Change is coming at a rapid pace and we
must adapt and learn or be left behind.
This presentation explores the future trends
emerging in technology and how they will
effect our lives.

3. Not your Mama's Internet
The Internet of Things...
• Web has evolved from a one way street to a two way
super-highway.
• Today more devices are connected to the internet
than there are people in the world
• That number will increase to 50 billion by 2020. (=6
devices per person in the world)
• Next to come = sensor networks... using low power
sensors that collect, transmit, analyze and distribute
data on a massive scale

4. Next... The Zettaflood (Trend #2)
• Exabytes created in 2008
o the equivalent to 1 Billion Music CDs
• Now (2012) we have 1.2 Zettabytes
o = 125 Million years of your favorite one hour
television show. (Now that's impressive)
• Projections suggest that by 2015, 91 percent of
of all Internet will be video.
• Most of the Zettaflood will be stored in the cloud.
o By 2020, one third of all data will live in or
pass through the cloud

5. #3 A New Publishing Revolution
• Internet = a platform for unlimited creativity.
• Web 2.0 Tools allow two way communication
instead of the previous "one way medium".
• Includes Contribution, Creation and
Collaboration.
• To participate only requires a web browser
and the internet. Blogs, Wikis, Podcasting,
video/photo sharing, social networking +
thousands of software services will increase
exponentially.

6. A Tidalwave of Information
• With the increase of information available on
the World Wide Web how does a person sort
through it all and find what is factual and
relevant.
• In the flood of "overwhelming content" it will be
necessary to prepare students to maneuver
the internet for factual information.
• We must however be constantly aware that
"wrong information" does exist and will
increase and the internet sometimes lies.

7. The Future of
Reading and Technology
• The advent of the e-reader has led to a rise in
reading for enjoyment. People want to read because
the technology is appealing to them.
• Amazon and Barnes and Noble can actually track
your reading habits and then suggest books that you
like. This leads to more reading.
• Eventually E-Readers will progress to the point of
allowing the reader to comment on a part of the book
and share dialog with others that are reading the
same book.
• Book talks can happen instantly and with someone
that is in another state or country.

8. A World of Knowledge at Your
Fingertips.... Just Point and Click.
• A new meaning to the concept of "differentiated
instruction".
• Watch an actual heart operation while it's happening
LIVE.
• Be tutored by someone in any subject via video
conferencing and shared desktop.
• People can access course material from over 1800
MIT courses online.
• Libraries, Museums and Art Galleries with virtual
tours and guides.
• The Sky is the limit... the future is.. limitless.

9. Bandwidth and Speed
• The future will see an increase of information
being sent and recieved over the internet
• Soooo... Bandwith and Speed will need to
increase in order to make allowances.
• We will see the days of 4G pass so that 50G
and 100G can take it's place.
• This will only the beginning. Science and
technolgy will find new ways of sending
data... (examples... lasers and nano
technology)

10. The World Gets Smaller
• Just like the car gave people the ability to
socialized in towns that were previously to far
away to visit before... the internet closes the
gaps between cultures that people have never
had the chance to experience.
• No longer are we limited by our geography or
boundary lines.
• News and information travels at lightening
speed.
• Example = Earthquake in Japan tweeted to
people in America warning of tsunami.

11. The Power of Power
• Population continues to grow.
• Energy continues to be a problem.
• Fossil fuels will end
• The most sensible solution = solar energy
• Solar can meet all our energy needs
• 25 super solar sites on 36 square miles =
enough energy to power everything.
• This could save 170,000 square miles of
forest each year.
• Could be completed in 3 years (sign me up)

12. Beam Me Up Scotty
• 3D printing is just on the horizon
• Items are created in layers
• Finished product is a duplicate of the
original.
• Star Trek fans... do you remember the
replicator. Yep... all the good ideas started
on Star Trek.
• The educational uses are endless.
o Creating models of human organs for study

13. Another Family Tree
• We currently have technology that includes
text to speech and a memory of previous
encounters.
• By 2020, robots will be superior to humans
o eventually they will create a computerized
brain that has consciousness.
• By 2025, robots will surpass human
population in the developed world.
• By 2035 robots could replace the workforce.
• I-Robot anyone???

14. Yes, There is a Cure for That
• In the next 10 years medical technologies will grow
much more sophisticated.
• Growing replacement organs will become a reality.
• Machines will be able to predict a person's actions
before they happen.
• Stephen Hawking says, "humans are entering a
stage of self-designed evolution"
o A substance that creates a photographic memory
o A spinning artificial heart with no pulse, no clogs,
and that never breaks dowwn.
• More Machine... Less Human = The Borg.

15. What about Education
• What about the Internet?
• Doubling in size every year.
• Education will change drastically
• Technology fluency will be necessary to do
the most simple tasks.
• The ready availablity of information will
keep students from learning or memorizing
anything. They will simply “look it up”.
• Assessments and tests will be changed
forever.

• What about the Web Logs (Blogs)?
• Public Writing
• Writing for real audiences
• Instant feed back and interaction with your
audience.
• Current writing conventions like
punctuation, spelling and grammar will
change.

• What about the Video Logs (Vlogs)?
• Greater access to video editing technology
• Ease of editing and posting
• Greater opportunites for expression
• Short videos, not long productions, will
change the way that people synthesize
information for traditional writing projects.
• But getting the schools to allow the use of
such tools may prove difficult.

• Mobile Computing
• Small hand held devices
• Computing power anywhere and anytime
• Palm pilots
• Cell Phones
• Hand Held Gaming Devices
• Students in Classes will be connected all of
the time.
• Teachers will not be the main presenter of
information anymore.

• New Input Devices
• Example = Dragon Speak Naturally
• Controlling a computer and inputting data
to word processors, spread sheets and
more.
• Voice Recognition software will change
writing forever. Why learn to write when
you can simply speak?
• Getting an uneasy feeling yet?

20. What about Education
• Changes in Learning Theory
• Currently we look at reactions to stimulus and
interpret how cognition works.
• In the future, we will look at how the brain
actually works while it is working.
• Functional MRI
• Brain Scans
• Isolating the basic elements of cognition.
• Everything is going to change. Are you
excited or are you feeling dread?
