Target Audience
Using the theory socio-economic needs I believe my magazines should
relate to categories B – E These categories include middle class, lower
middle class, skilled working class, working class and casual/lowest
grade workers. Reasons behind this include category E (casual/lowest
grade workers) contains young students aged 16 – 18 who are most
likely to be the most interested in the magazine due to their large
interest in music. The magazines stem to category B (middle class)
because this category includes teachers that can have a large interest
in music.
Using Katz’s uses and gratifications theory I have made my magazines
target all the theories. This includes personal identification as the
audience can relate to the interviews inside the magazine, inform and
educate as the audience learn something reading the magazine and
finally diversion as the audience escape from reality when reading.
Target Audience (Continued)
When using Hartley’s seven subjectivities I made my magazines
relate to the 3 main categories. These categories include age, gender
and class. This is because of this my target audience is mostly 16 –
21 year olds, the magazines apply to both genders and also apply to
around 5 different classes connoting to socio-economic needs.
Finally using Maslow’s hierarchy of needs I believe my magazines
reach out to each category on the list. This includes social climbers
who believe reading the magazine will improve their status in
society, care givers where the reader sympathizes with the situation
of the celebrity in the magazine, explorers who are driven by social
change and finally survivors who want to know if the person they
are reading about is ok.

Printing Quotes And Costs
The image above demonstrates a rough estimate on how much it will cost to print and
deliver my magazines ready for distribution to customers. The estimated total to print
15,000 copies of my magazine would be £8093 to £9712. This price is then increased to
around £9000 as there is a £737 delivery charge
https://print24.com/uk/product/magazines/
Advertising Revenue
Advert Style Cost
Half Page £2750
Full Page 13 £5000
Double Page Spread 4 £9000
Inside my magazine I have 21 pages of advertisements. This is
based over 61 pages. 13 of my advertisements are full page and
the other 4 advertisements are double page spread, adding up
to 8 more pages. 13 full page advertisements creates £65,000
revenue for the business. 4 double page advertisements
creates £36,000 in revenue for the business. This added
together creates £101,000 in revenue for the company. This
over a 12 month period generates £1,212,000 for the business.
£5000 (Full Page Advert Cost) x 13 (Number Of Full Page Adverts) = £65,000
£9000 (Double Page Spread Advert Cost) x 4 (Number Of Double Page Spread Adverts) = £36,000
£65,000 (Money Raised From Full Page Adverts) + £36,000 (Money Raised From Double Page Spread Adverts) = £101,000
£101,000 (Total Money Raised Per Magazine) x 12 (Months In The Year) = £1,212,000
Social Media Adverts
Using social media to advertise my magazine will be extremely beneficial as it
will not cost any further money to advertise. Often creating a social media
account is free. For example Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. Pages can be
made on these social media websites for free and readers of the magazine
can decide whether or not they want to follow or like the page to get regular
updates about my magazine.
Another free social media website I can use is YouTube. Although free to
make account some time and money may need to be invested in creating
videos and advertisements for the channel based around my magazine.
YouTube is extremely useful because as people subscribe and watch videos
based on my magazine it can generate revenue, not only from people
watching the videos themselves but it will make people want to purchase my
magazine.
Facebook Adverts
These images display my adverts
for my magazines on the social
media page Facebook. The pages
have my logo as the banner and
my latest issue of the magazine
as the profile picture. Facebook
will allow me to promote my
page with them for £5 a day for a
period of time. This is beneficial
because it will stem out to my
target audience all across a large
social media platform, potentially
bringing in customers.
Promoting my page on Facebook will cost £3,640. When this has been paid Facebook will share my page
with my target audience allowing them to see my magazine.

Inspiration Magazine : Fusion
I have chosen this copy of XXL to be my inspiration
magazine for my first magazine, Fusion.
The reason I have chosen this magazine as
inspiration is because I believe it is good at
capturing the audiences eye. The first reason I
believe it captures the eye is because the main
image is a large headshot. This means that fans of
Kendrick Lamar can see that he is the main story in
the magazine without reading any text. This means
that Lamar’s fans may be encouraged to buy the
magazine. The headshot also slightly covers the
XXL logo demonstrating to people who are not
fans of Kendrick Lamar that he is a powerful artist
because he is allowed to cover the logo of a
popular brand. Secondly the magazine is eye
catching because the background colours of the
front page are different to the normal dull colours
on music magazines. The colours may connote that
the article about the artist inside is the most
interesting available as the colours are interesting.
The one section I will not be following of this
magazine is the font style. I believe the text around
the artist is not interesting enough to draw
audiences to the stories inside the magazine
What will I ‘repeat’ Steve Neale (1980)
Magazine 1, Fusion
The things I will repeat to
make my first magazine,
Fusion, look effective are
the cover lines, the quote
from the magazine
interview with an artist,
the barcode, an image of
the artist inside my
magazine and finally the
colours of the magazine
(pink and green) I have
chosen to not repeat the
font style of the main
heading. This is because I
believe it is boring and
unattractive to the
audience

Connotations Behind The Name
The connotation behind the name of my first magazine “Fusion”
was the display of power. The word “Fusion” displays power
because of its links to scientific term of “Nuclear Fusion”. The
word nuclear displays power because nuclear is a source of
energy. The reason I want my magazine to be linked to power is
so that the audience know that it is the best magazine out there
with the best information.

Inspiration Magazine : MMH
I have chosen this magazine because as my
second magazine of inspiration because I
believe it will be easy to recreate. The simplicity
behind the magazine is also effective because it
captures an audiences eye better as there is
less to look at which may distract the audience.
This magazine also makes it clear who is the
topic in the magazine as the title “TRAVIS
SCOTT Rage Against The Machine” is clearly
visible to people passing by. This means whilst
on the shelves in the shops if a Travis Scott fan
sees the magazine they are likely to buy it. If it
wasn’t clear who the magazine was based on it
may reduce sales. The pink background may
connote that the magazine is not just targeted
at a male audience, as stereotypically the hip
hop/rap genre targets a young black male, it
may also be targeted a the females interested
in Travis Scott. I believe I should recreate this
because it will attract more people to my
magazine. In this issue I will also recreate how
XXL use a red box for the logo because it makes
it stand out.
What will I ‘repeat’ Steve Neale (1980)
Magazine 2, MMH
The things I will
repeat to make my
first magazine,
MMH, look
effective are the
cover lines, the
small paragraph
that explains what
is inside the
magazine, the
barcode, the font
used for the
magazine
headline, an image
of the artist inside
my magazine and
finally the colours
of the magazine
(pink)

Connotations Behind The Name
The main connotation behind choosing MMH as the name of my
second magazine is the use of acronym. This means each letter
of the title of my magazine stands for my strapline of my
magazine. Make Music Happen. The other connotation behind
the name of my magazine is the involvement of the word
“Happen” I wanted to involve this in my title as it displays the
magazine is up to date with what is happening “right here, right
now” this attracts an audience because they want all the latest
content.
Chosen Magazine
These images display my chosen magazine, MMH,
front cover and double page spread. I have
selected this magazine as I personally feel it is my
stronger piece of work and it looks the most
professional.
Future Plan
My plan for the future with my magazine is to double my sales, from 15,000
copies a year to 30,000, in a three year period. This will increase profits by
around £60,000 meaning my magazine business will become a million pound
business in the first three years of opening.

  • 5. Target Audience Using the theory socio-economic needs I believe my magazines should relate to categories B – E These categories include middle class, lower middle class, skilled working class, working class and casual/lowest grade workers. Reasons behind this include category E (casual/lowest grade workers) contains young students aged 16 – 18 who are most likely to be the most interested in the magazine due to their large interest in music. The magazines stem to category B (middle class) because this category includes teachers that can have a large interest in music. Using Katz’s uses and gratifications theory I have made my magazines target all the theories. This includes personal identification as the audience can relate to the interviews inside the magazine, inform and educate as the audience learn something reading the magazine and finally diversion as the audience escape from reality when reading.
  • 6. Target Audience (Continued) When using Hartley’s seven subjectivities I made my magazines relate to the 3 main categories. These categories include age, gender and class. This is because of this my target audience is mostly 16 – 21 year olds, the magazines apply to both genders and also apply to around 5 different classes connoting to socio-economic needs. Finally using Maslow’s hierarchy of needs I believe my magazines reach out to each category on the list. This includes social climbers who believe reading the magazine will improve their status in society, care givers where the reader sympathizes with the situation of the celebrity in the magazine, explorers who are driven by social change and finally survivors who want to know if the person they are reading about is ok.

  • 11. Printing Quotes And Costs The image above demonstrates a rough estimate on how much it will cost to print and deliver my magazines ready for distribution to customers. The estimated total to print 15,000 copies of my magazine would be £8093 to £9712. This price is then increased to around £9000 as there is a £737 delivery charge https://print24.com/uk/product/magazines/
  • 12. Advertising Revenue Advert Style Cost Half Page £2750 Full Page 13 £5000 Double Page Spread 4 £9000 Inside my magazine I have 21 pages of advertisements. This is based over 61 pages. 13 of my advertisements are full page and the other 4 advertisements are double page spread, adding up to 8 more pages. 13 full page advertisements creates £65,000 revenue for the business. 4 double page advertisements creates £36,000 in revenue for the business. This added together creates £101,000 in revenue for the company. This over a 12 month period generates £1,212,000 for the business. £5000 (Full Page Advert Cost) x 13 (Number Of Full Page Adverts) = £65,000 £9000 (Double Page Spread Advert Cost) x 4 (Number Of Double Page Spread Adverts) = £36,000 £65,000 (Money Raised From Full Page Adverts) + £36,000 (Money Raised From Double Page Spread Adverts) = £101,000 £101,000 (Total Money Raised Per Magazine) x 12 (Months In The Year) = £1,212,000
  • 13. Social Media Adverts Using social media to advertise my magazine will be extremely beneficial as it will not cost any further money to advertise. Often creating a social media account is free. For example Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. Pages can be made on these social media websites for free and readers of the magazine can decide whether or not they want to follow or like the page to get regular updates about my magazine. Another free social media website I can use is YouTube. Although free to make account some time and money may need to be invested in creating videos and advertisements for the channel based around my magazine. YouTube is extremely useful because as people subscribe and watch videos based on my magazine it can generate revenue, not only from people watching the videos themselves but it will make people want to purchase my magazine.
  • 14. Facebook Adverts These images display my adverts for my magazines on the social media page Facebook. The pages have my logo as the banner and my latest issue of the magazine as the profile picture. Facebook will allow me to promote my page with them for £5 a day for a period of time. This is beneficial because it will stem out to my target audience all across a large social media platform, potentially bringing in customers. Promoting my page on Facebook will cost £3,640. When this has been paid Facebook will share my page with my target audience allowing them to see my magazine.

  • 25. Inspiration Magazine : Fusion I have chosen this copy of XXL to be my inspiration magazine for my first magazine, Fusion. The reason I have chosen this magazine as inspiration is because I believe it is good at capturing the audiences eye. The first reason I believe it captures the eye is because the main image is a large headshot. This means that fans of Kendrick Lamar can see that he is the main story in the magazine without reading any text. This means that Lamar’s fans may be encouraged to buy the magazine. The headshot also slightly covers the XXL logo demonstrating to people who are not fans of Kendrick Lamar that he is a powerful artist because he is allowed to cover the logo of a popular brand. Secondly the magazine is eye catching because the background colours of the front page are different to the normal dull colours on music magazines. The colours may connote that the article about the artist inside is the most interesting available as the colours are interesting. The one section I will not be following of this magazine is the font style. I believe the text around the artist is not interesting enough to draw audiences to the stories inside the magazine
  • 26. What will I ‘repeat’ Steve Neale (1980) Magazine 1, Fusion The things I will repeat to make my first magazine, Fusion, look effective are the cover lines, the quote from the magazine interview with an artist, the barcode, an image of the artist inside my magazine and finally the colours of the magazine (pink and green) I have chosen to not repeat the font style of the main heading. This is because I believe it is boring and unattractive to the audience
  • 30. Photo Shoot Plan (Continued)
  • 31. Connotations Behind The Name The connotation behind the name of my first magazine “Fusion” was the display of power. The word “Fusion” displays power because of its links to scientific term of “Nuclear Fusion”. The word nuclear displays power because nuclear is a source of energy. The reason I want my magazine to be linked to power is so that the audience know that it is the best magazine out there with the best information.

  • 41. Inspiration Magazine : MMH I have chosen this magazine because as my second magazine of inspiration because I believe it will be easy to recreate. The simplicity behind the magazine is also effective because it captures an audiences eye better as there is less to look at which may distract the audience. This magazine also makes it clear who is the topic in the magazine as the title “TRAVIS SCOTT Rage Against The Machine” is clearly visible to people passing by. This means whilst on the shelves in the shops if a Travis Scott fan sees the magazine they are likely to buy it. If it wasn’t clear who the magazine was based on it may reduce sales. The pink background may connote that the magazine is not just targeted at a male audience, as stereotypically the hip hop/rap genre targets a young black male, it may also be targeted a the females interested in Travis Scott. I believe I should recreate this because it will attract more people to my magazine. In this issue I will also recreate how XXL use a red box for the logo because it makes it stand out.
  • 42. What will I ‘repeat’ Steve Neale (1980) Magazine 2, MMH The things I will repeat to make my first magazine, MMH, look effective are the cover lines, the small paragraph that explains what is inside the magazine, the barcode, the font used for the magazine headline, an image of the artist inside my magazine and finally the colours of the magazine (pink)
  • 46. Photo Shoot Plan (Continued)
  • 47. Connotations Behind The Name The main connotation behind choosing MMH as the name of my second magazine is the use of acronym. This means each letter of the title of my magazine stands for my strapline of my magazine. Make Music Happen. The other connotation behind the name of my magazine is the involvement of the word “Happen” I wanted to involve this in my title as it displays the magazine is up to date with what is happening “right here, right now” this attracts an audience because they want all the latest content.
  • 48. Chosen Magazine These images display my chosen magazine, MMH, front cover and double page spread. I have selected this magazine as I personally feel it is my stronger piece of work and it looks the most professional.
  • 49. Future Plan My plan for the future with my magazine is to double my sales, from 15,000 copies a year to 30,000, in a three year period. This will increase profits by around £60,000 meaning my magazine business will become a million pound business in the first three years of opening.
