The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

We all have good and bad thoughts from time to time and situation to situation. We are bombarded daily with spiraling thoughts(both negative and positive) creating all-consuming feel , making us difficult to manage with associated suffering. Good thoughts are like our Mob Signal (Positive thought) amidst noise(negative thought) in the atmosphere. Negative thoughts like noise outweigh positive thoughts. These thoughts often create unwanted confusion, trouble, stress and frustration in our mind as well as chaos in our physical world. Negative thoughts are also known as “distorted thinking”.
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

3. Section 1: Magazine
Publisher - Bauer Magazine - Q
In section one of Unit 30 – LO1 I will be looking at a magazine publisher
from the United Kingdom. I will then be looking at one of the products the
publisher creates. I have selected to look at Bauer Media who produce Q
magazine.
4. Publisher and Product
Q Magazine
Q Magazine is one of Bauer Media Groups many products. The magazine was
founded by Mark Ellen and David Hepworth in 1896 and they produced the first
copy of the magazine in October of that year. Q is a music magazine that is
published monthly. The circulation of the magazine is around 44,000. It is written in
English language. The magazine links to the music industry by writing about new
music, music compilations and live concert reviews.
http://www.qthemusic.com/
Bauer
Bauer Media Group are a publishing company based in Europe. They have a large
headquarters in Hamburg, Germany and produce over 600 magazines, 400 digital
products and 50 radio/TV stations around the world. They distribute there
magazines in many different ways for example post. Bauer employ over 11,000
people across 17 different countries. The company was founded in 1875. The
current CEO of Bauer is called Yvonne Bauer and she has an 85% share in the
company. The revenue Bauer produce per year is around 2.4 billion euros.
https://www.bauermedia.co.uk/
5. Genre
The genre of Q is quite varied as they
have previously reported on many
different styles of artists and music.
Mainly Q report on pop music and rock
music. Evidence of this links to issues
such as Plan B and Adele who are both
pop artists. The other issues contain
bands such as The Foo Fighters and artists
such as Paul McCartney.
6. As primary research I conducted a survey on the website
SurveyMonkey. This question is taken from the survey and it
demonstrates “what is your favourite genre of music?” the main
answer I received back was “Hip Hop” with 70% of people putting it as
there favorite genre. This relates to Q magazine as they focus on the
genre rock. This may mean Q magazine may not attract as many
readers as a magazine that focuses on the Hip Hop genre
Genre (Continued)
7. Content
Q magazine contains different features every month of its
release. This section would contain interviews with artists,
reports on live concerts and also top people in music at the
present time. There is also a section in the magazine that is
written in every copy this includes, subscriptions, music
based crosswords and the 10 commandments. The
crosswords main use is to keep the audience engaged in the
magazine, another feature produced monthly is Q mail this
feature also engages readers as it allows them to write in
and ask any questions they have.
8. Front Cover Deconstruction
The colour of the magazine connotes that this particular
issue could be to stand out to an older audience as Noel
Gallagher (Main Image Artist) is an artist of a previous
generation. Noel is also wearing similar colours in his
picture which could link to the background
This part of the magazine is attractive to everyone as it
contains what else can be seen in the magazine. The extra
titles are called cover lines. The cover lines are effective as
Q can attract more readers as sometimes readers may not
be interested in the main story in the magazine
This is the main image. The image could connote the
power and presence of Q magazine because of a full
body image of Noel Gallagher with his arms crossed
looking directly at the camera. The image could also
connote that magazine is for everyday people because
Noel is wearing everyday clothes, just because he is a
celebrity he is no different
This area includes Q magazines convergence,
barcode, price and month of issue. This is
needed in order to allow customers to know
the price of the magazine and purchase the
magazine. Also the convergence is important
as it allows a customer to visit the Q website
The Q masthead stands out to people in shops.
The colour red connotes to hot which may
mean Q magazine knows what is hot right now
which attracts customers as they want to know
about the newest music. The font of the Q is
sophisticated so could connote to an older
audience.
The strapline of Q is “The worlds greatest
music magazine” which can be seen on every
issue. The word “greatest” shows that Q is a
good music magazine because it can advertise
that it is the “greatest”
The main cover lines stand are important as
readers then know the main story in the issue
of the magazine. Important as people know
what they are buying
9. Double Page Spread
Deconstruction
Star Appeal : The use of Ed
Sheeran attracts a male and
female audience to the
magazine as the style of Ed’s
music is based on both
genders. Also using Ed
Sheeran is a good idea as he
has become one of the
biggest stars in a small
amount of time and lots of
people want to find out
more about him and his life.
When audiences see this
they will be automatically
engaged
Pull Quote : The pull
quote is a quote from
the interview. This is
used to attract readers
because then they
want to know why and
how Ed is “bringing
ginger back”
Drop Capital : The drop
capital is a big bold letter
that is the first letter that
comes from the first word
in the article. This drop
capital is effective
because the colour red
stands out and the letter
“I” connotes how Ed will
be talking about himself
and this is what readers
will be reading the
magazine for.
Page Number : The
page number is used
to inform readers what
page number they are
on. This links to the
contents page as it will
tell readers where to
go veer page numbers
Stand First : The stand first is a short, captivating introduction to the interview so the reader will
know what, who, why and when about the interview. Then they find out more when reading
10. Form and Style
The layout of Q magazine is very consistent.
Every issue has the red background and white
text Q masthead in the top left corner with
the strapline “The Worlds Greatest Music
Magazine” written in a black box
underneath. There is then always a main
image in the center of the page. The main
headlines and the sub lines are then written
around the main image. The colours often
used are red, black and white. Inside the
magazine the form and style is also consistent
with features such as page numbers on every
page and images that contain star appeal on
most pages. The fonts used are always similar
and are always simple in order to stick with
Q’s professional and consistent form and
style. It is important for Q to keep consistent
in all their magazines in order to keep a
professional feel and keep customers happy
as they know they can expect quality from Q
11. Technological Convergence
Q magazine use various types of technology to advertise their products. The biggest
use of technology they us is social media. With Q magazine having social media pages
on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Instagram they have constant contact with their
consumers. Q also use social media in order to advertise new products. Other
technologies Q use is a website. The advantage of this website is that they are product
specific and also many offer subscription services to Q products. This increases the
revenue that Q make per year.
12. Target Audience
According to socio-economic needs this
magazine would relate to categories B – E
These categories include middle class,
lower middle class, skilled working class,
working class and casual/lowest grade
workers. Reasons behind this include
category E (casual/lowest grade workers)
contains young students aged 16 – 18 who
are most likely to be the most interested in
the magazine due to their large interest in
music. The magazine stems to category B
(middle class) because this category
includes teachers that can have a large
interest in music.
In the Katz’s uses and gratifications theory
I believe this magazine targets all the
theories. This includes personal
identification as the audience can relate to
the interviews inside the magazine,
‘inform and educate’ as the audience learn
something reading the magazine and
finally diversion as the audience escape
from reality when reading.
13. Target Audience (Continued)
According to Hartley’s seven
subjectivities Q magazine relates to the
3 main categories. These categories
include age, gender and class. Evidence
of this is Q’s audience is mostly 16 – 21
year olds, the magazine applies to both
genders and also applies to around 5
different classes.
Finally using Maslow’s hierarchy of
needs it is clear Q magazine reaches out
to each category on the list. This
includes social climbers who believe
reading the magazine will improve their
status in society, care givers where the
reader sympathizes with the situation
of the celebrity in the magazine,
explorers who are driven by social
change and finally survivors who want
to know if the person they are reading
about is ok.
14. Email Evidence
Here I show evidence of
emailing the 4 emails
addresses I could find for
people who work in Bauer.
These people are
• Cat Martin,
Communications Director,
Bauer Media
• Jonny Silver ,
Communications
Manager, Bauer Media
• Genevieve Potter, Head of
Internal Communications,
Bauer Media
• Sophie Ramm,
Commercial Marketing
Manager, Bauer Media
I emailed the workers at
Bauer in order to find out
about the production
process of Q magazine
15. Email Replies
These email replies display evidence that I did not get a reply
that informed me about Q magazines production process. This
means that I have had to visit a website in order to learn about
the production process of a magazine.
16. Production Process
There are 9 stages in the production process of the magazine.
Stage 1 – Date of Publication
This is where the magazines publisher (Bauer) set a date of publication for the magazine. The date of publication is the date the publisher want
the magazine to be released as a quality and finished product for the general public. Once this date has been chosen there is now a schedule
to complete the magazine.
Stage 2 - Managing the Schedule
As Q magazine wants to remain a top magazine, Bauer need to successfully stick to the date of publication. The schedule should include time
for mishaps so that if mishaps occur the magazine will still be released on time.
Stage 3 - Editorial and Budgetary Decision
This step is where the magazine’s editorial team begins assembling and deciding what topics will be covered in the magazine. After deciding
the types of articles, topics, news stories, illustrations and photographs that will be used in the magazine, the team makes decisions of a
budget and how they will stick to it. The team will look at the money that is available to them and the most efficient way to spend it towards
the production of the magazine.

magazine-production-process/
17. Production Process (Continued)
Stage 4 - Content Acquisition
The content acquisition stage is the stage where the content will be gathered for a magazine. It is also at this stage that artwork and graphics
are also worked on. The artwork includes illustrations and pictures that are going to be placed in the magazine. Graphics are the pictures or
images that are designed with a computer program. Also at this stage research is made by journalists and reporters into the topics and events
being covered. The research can be done via the use of the internet and news databases. Meetings are also arranged with interviewees
Stage 5 – Sub Editing
Sub editing focuses on quality control. This is the media organization sub-editors job; if there is no sub-editor. Quality control includes checking
the accuracy of all facts in the articles, making sure that words are properly spelled, making sure that grammar and punctuation are used
correctly, making sure that all articles follow the house-style and working on the page layout.
Stage 6 – Page Layout
A special team responsible for page layouts is called the layout staff. Their job is to typeset and layout the various pages that come together in
the magazine. In performing this task, they use desktop computers to do this. It is at this stage that adverts from advertisers are placed into the
content.
http://hosbeg.com/the-
magazine-production-process/
18. Production Process (Continued)
Stage 7 - Proofreading
The next stage is the proofreading. The editorial department will print out a hardcopy of the magazine so they can read through to find and
correct any mistakes in it. Any mistake that is spotted is corrected on the softcopy. The editorial team keeps proofreading until every member
is satisfied that all mistakes have been corrected.
Stage 8 – Sub Editing
The soft copy of the entire magazine is sent to the printer which will print the magazine. The company first prints a few copies and sends them
to the publication’s editor for checking once again. If the editor is satisfied with the printer’s proofs, then the green light is given to the printer
for mass printing to commence.
Stage 9 – Page Layout
The last stage of the production process. The printing company, having finished with the printing of the magazines will package them neatly
and send them to a warehouse. From the warehouse, the magazines are then distributed and then sold to the public.
http://hosbeg.com/the-
magazine-production-process/
20. Distribution
Q magazine is only available in
the UK to purchase of the shelf.
To receive a printed copy you
can subscribe to the magazine.
When subscribing to Q you can
also receive a digital copy. This
means that Q magazine has
been made available in up to
230 countries around the world.
Print copies of Q are sent
directly to a customers house or
a shop in order for people to
purchase the copies they want
to purchase and not have to
purchase copies of Q they are
not interested in.
The main shops Q magazine is
distributed to are large
supermarkets such as ASDA and
high street retailers like
WHSmiths
21. Associated Products (Bauer)
Bauer are not just linked to Q, they have
many other products such as magazines,
radio stations and TV
Magazines

22. Marketing and Advertisement
Marketing – Q magazine is created by Bauer media. This gives Bauer a chance to
advertise other products they create in the magazine. This is a good use of
marketing from Bauer as when advertising in Q magazine they are advertising in
“The Worlds Greatest Music Magazine”. This will increase the amount of sales
Bauer’s products make as a large audience will see the advertisements. An example
of this can be found in the October 2014 issue of Q where MOJO magazine, a
magazine made by Bauer, is advertised on the back page of the magazine. Another
use of marketing in Q magazine is the subscriptions advertisement on the first page
of all issues of Q. This advertisement explains to audiences how they can subscribe
to Q magazine and the cost of subscribing to the magazine.
Advertisement - The majority of advertisements in Q magazine are full page. The
advertisements are mainly based on music related to the genre of Q magazine. For
example, a band named “The Kooks” advertise their new album. Finally, there is a
section in Q magazine that is purely for advertisement of gigs coming up.
24. Section 2: Newspaper
In section two of Unit 30 – LO1 I will be looking at a newspaper publisher
from the United Kingdom. I will then be looking at one of the products the
publisher creates. I have selected to look at News UK who own The Sun
newspaper.
Owner – News UK Newspaper – The Sun
25. Free Sheet
Free sheet newspapers are free. They are either handed out or left for the
public to pick up. Free sheet newspapers make their money by
advertisements. Free sheet news papers first begun in the 1880’s in
Germany and were distributed twice a week in a town called Lubeck. The
United Kingdoms biggest free sheet newspaper is the Metro. It has
circulation figures of around 1,590,809 per day. This beats other free sheet
newspapers such as the Evening Standard by around 900,000.
26. Red Top Tabloid
Red top tabloids are news papers that have red masthead in the top left
corner of the page. Inside the red masthead there is white bold writing.
This is effective in catching audiences eyes because the colour red and
white contrast each other. The newspapers tend to include lots of
colourful images throughout. Red top tabloids are known for informal
language, this is because they include a large amount of puns and jokes in
the article headings and in the writing of the articles. The newspapers
sizing are 11.00” by 16.9”. This is smaller than other newspapers. Red top
tabloids include soft news, this includes such things as celebrity lifestyle.
27. Broadsheet
Broadsheet news papers are often a lot larger than tabloid newspapers.
This is because the sizes of this style of newspaper are 23.5” by 29.5”.
Broadsheet newspapers also have a very different style of audience. This is
because broadsheet newspapers are filled with large amounts of writing
and little pictures. The have a formal language and inform the reader
more about hard news rather than soft news. Hard news is based around
what is going on in the world regarding serious situations.
28. Chosen Newspaper : The
Sun
The newspaper I have selected is “The
Sun”. The sun newspaper is a red top
tabloid that reports soft news to its
readers. The Sun newspaper attract
their audience with the cheap price of
the newspaper and using the red
masthead with the bold white writing
inside. The Sun was founded on 15th
September 1964. The headquarters can
be found in London, England. The
newspaper has several owners. These
include News UK, New Corporation and
News Group Newspapers Limited. The
Sun is released daily and has circulation
figures of around 1,858,067.
29. Owner
News UK is a British newspaper publisher which was
founded in 1981. The current CEO of the company is
Rebekah Brooks who was reappointed her position at
the company in September 2015. Brooks had
previously resigned from the company in July 2009
due to the phone hacking scandal. It has been
alleged that News UK staff illegally accessed
voicemails from the mobile phones of thousands of
public figures, including politicians and celebrities.
When Brooks left the company in July 2009 it was
reported that she received a £10,000,000 pay out for
leaving the company. News UK does not only publish
The Sun newspaper. Other newspapers include The
Times, The Sunday Times and TLS. News UK have
located their headquarters in London, England.
30. Production Process
Much like the production process of magazines there are 9 stages in the production process of the newspaper. The stages are also extremely
similar to the magazine stages, the main difference is The Sun has to prepare in advance as the newspaper is daily release.
Stage 1 – Date of Publication
This is where the newspaper publisher set a date of publication for the newspaper. The date of publication is the date the publisher want the
newspaper to be released as a quality and finished product for the general public. Once this date has been chosen there is now a schedule to
complete the newspaper.
Stage 2 - Managing the Schedule
As The Sun newspaper wants to remain a top newspaper, News UK need to successfully stick to the date of publication. The schedule should
include time for mishaps so that if mishaps occur the newspaper will still be released on time.
Stage 3 - Editorial and Budgetary Decision
This step is where the newspapers editorial team begins assembling and deciding what topics will be covered in the newspaper. After deciding

33. Front Cover Breakdown
Masthead – The Suns masthead
is very consistent. In every copy
of the newspaper the masthead
can be found in the top left
corner with the red box and the
bold white writing inside. “The
Sun” could connote to the
audience that the newspaper
reports happy news that is of the
easy reading. The bold red colour
also stands out, this may mean
people are more likely to
purchase the newspaper because
they are attracted to the colour.
Advert – This advert in the newspaper
is not only important because it
provides a revenue for the newspaper
as a business has to pay The Sun to
have an advert in their newspaper,
but it attracts readers as they believe
if they purchase the newspaper they
will learn how to “save up to £260 on
energy bills”
Main Story – The main story
in The Sun newspaper also
has a consistent theme much
like the masthead. The
common theme that can be
seen in the main story is the
bold white text written over
the main image. The Sun
newspaper also writes many
of the main story headline
using puns. Another
reoccurrence on the front
page of The Sun is the small
white box that previews the
article. This feature is
important as the audience
may read this preview and
then purchase the newspaper
as they want to carry on
reading the story inside.
34. Front Cover Breakdown
Main Image – The main image
used on the front of the
newspaper is used to attract the
audiences gaze. This is because it
is often the first thing a person will
see. This image of Emma Thomson
used relates to the main headline
of this issue of the newspaper, this
is because the image has been
edited to have cake in her mouth.
This links to the headline because
it states “UK a cake-filled, misery-
laden, grey old island”
The Copy – The copy of the
newspaper is used as a very
rough description of what the
main story in the newspaper is
about.
Secondary Lead - In order
to attract a larger audience
The Sun Newspaper
includes more than one
story. The second story
inside this particular
newspaper will attract the
male gaze due to an explicit
image of a female. This is a
technique used by The Sun
newspaper to get more
people to purchase the
newspaper. This story is
also much softer news than
the main headline.
35. Double Page Spread
Breakdown
Stand First : The stand first is a
short, captivating introduction to
the article so the reader will know
all the information about the article,
this includes questions such as
what, who, why and when. Readers
then find out more when reading
the full article
Drop Capital : The drop capital is a
big bold letter that is the first letter
that comes from the first word in the
article. The black drop capital in this
article could connote to the dark
things that are discussed within
Pull Quote : The pull quote is a
quote from the interview. This is
used to attract readers because then
they want to know what the person
in the article is talking about.
Page Number : The page number
is used to inform readers what
page number they are on. This
links to the contents page as it will
tell readers where to go veer page
numbers
Main Image : The article has a main image located in the center
of the double page spread. This image is printed in colour which
will make it stand out against the black and white theme of
newspapers. This image is used to draw in readers and also to
display who the article is talking about
36. Website Breakdown
This section of the website
displays a story that can be
found inside the latest
edition of the newspaper.
This story changes day to
day on The Suns website.
The story that is often the
first story seen on the
website is the most clicked
on story of the day
The familiar logo of The Sun
is the first thing that is
visible on the website. This is
so that visitors of the
website can see they have
come to the right place to
find out all about The Sun
The navigation tool on the
website is filled with many
options to keep visitors of
the website on the site for
longer periods of time as
there is interesting
subjects available to see.
For example the “Football”
section
This section displays other
news stories of the day
which the visitor of the suns
website may be interested in
reading. These stories are
placed specifically in the
website visitors eye line in
order to encourage the
reader to stay on the
website for longer.
37. Advertisements
The Sun newspaper includes many
adverts inside. The adverts vary in
topic much like the genre of the
newspaper. This is because The Sun
is paid to advertise by other people,
businesses, brands and topics and
they barely advertise their own
related topics. This allows The Sun
to keep keep their newspaper price
low as they create a large income
from advertisements. For example,
a small advert starts at £336, a
medium advert starts at £2856 and
a large advertisement will start at
£8850. If people wish to advertise in
colour the price is doubled. The
price also increases based on the
date the ad will be posted and the
type of advert.

38. Advertisements
(Continued)
Although it is expensive to advertise in The Sun newspaper the results are extremely beneficial to the person
advertising. This may be based on the fact The Sun newspaper gets 4.2 million readers each day. The images
below display reviews The Sun newspaper has received after a person has chosen to advertise in the
newspaper
https://www.newsukadvertising.co.uk/the-sun
39. Demographics
The statements below talk about The Suns readers…
• Research has shown that £1 in every £7 spent on groceries is spent by a Sun reader.
• 14% of petrol bought in a week is paid for by a Sun reader.
• The Sun’s dream team and Page 3 websites each attract around a quarter of a million
visits every week.
• The Sun reaches more under 35s than the 3 main leading competitors combined.
• 404,000 Sun readers have a family income over £50,000
• 32% of readers belong to the ABC1 demographic group
• The Sun has 4.2 million readers everyday (Hard Copy)
• The Sun nearly reaches 8 million people everyday (Online, Hard Copies, Brand
Extensions)
One thing we can learn from looking at the demographic of The Sun newspaper is it is not
just the hard copy of the newspaper that effects the audience. With another 3.8 million
people accessing products of The Sun on top of the original 4.2 million the hardcopy
newspaper reaches

40. Marketing
One way The Sun newspaper has chosen to market
themselves is by using the technique of brand
extensions.
One of the most popular brand extensions of The Sun is
“Sun Bets”. Sun Bets is The Sun newspapers betting
app. This mainly targets a male audience over the age
of 18. The betting app allows people to place bets on
football, horse racing, golf and many other sports. This
is an effective way of marketing The Sun as it means
that they reach more people everyday.
Another extension of The Suns brand is “The Sun
Holidays”. 2 million people go on holiday each year
using this feature. This makes The Sun Holidays the
biggest short break travel company in the UK. The Sun
holidays also provides extremely cheap holidays which
once again is an effective marketing technique. This is
because it targets all audiences as everybody can afford
to go on holiday through The Sun. This once again
means that The Sun reach more and more consumers
everyday.

41. Synergy
The Sun newspaper use social media platforms like
Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and YouTube. The Sun use
social media in order to inform their readers of news
stories, upcoming events that relate to The Sun and just
to keep readers interested in the products they produce.
The Sun also have an app that is available to download.
This app is another extension of The Sun that keeps
readers interested and using The Sun newspaper
products.
42. Connotations Behind
The Name
I believe the connotations behind
the name of the newspaper “The
Sun” is to connote to the audience
the that the newspaper reports
happy news that is of the easy
reading. In the logo of The Sun you
can see a little sun rising in the red
masthead. This may connote that
the newspaper is rising up the
ranks, this could be it has the best
upcoming information inside. It also
could connote that people should
buy the newspaper in the morning
in order for them to learn about the
news on their daily commute to
work.
43. Genre
The Sun newspaper has a very broad
genre. This because they report on a
large amount of different types of
news stories. This includes celebrity
lifestyle, sport, politics and
death/murder cases. The Sun has
many genres in order to increase the
amount of readership they have. This
is because not all news stories will
appeal to all people, having a broad
range of news stories inside the
newspaper will attract a large
audience. This links to why The Sun
newspaper is one of the largest
newspapers in Britain.
44. History Of The
Newspaper
The Sun newspaper has a very large
history due to the fact it was established
over 50 years ago in 1964. The Sun
magazine was originally released as a
broadsheet newspaper. The newspaper
was released in order to replace the
failing newspaper called the Daily Herald.
The Sun changed to a tabloid newspaper
in in 1969. This is where the sun began to
report on softer news, this even included
“Page 3 Models” as of 1970. From 1970
The Sun newspaper has had an average
circulation number of 3,500,000. This
had began do drop to an average of
1,700,00 since 2015. This is due to the
introduction of technology.
45. Price
The Sun newspaper varies in price. For
example, during weekdays the
newspaper is often priced at 20 pence.
Then at weekends the newspaper
often goes up in price due to it
containing more content, for example
on a Sunday the newspaper is often
£1. The Sun contains more information
on the weekend because it includes
sections such as the football scores
and reviews. The Sun newspaper is
extremely cheap due to the fact it is
released on a daily occasion. Due to
The Suns audience often purchasing
the newspaper everyday the costs
need to be cheap so the newspaper
stays in circulation. Other prices of The
Sun have been 50p, 60p and 40p
46. Circulation Figures
The Sun newspaper has had a
drop in circulation figures in the
recent years. But from beginning
in 1969 the newspapers circulation
figures have always been high. The
graph demonstrates The Suns
average circulation figures since
the year 2000. I believe the
newspapers circulation figures
have decreased due to the
increase of people using
technology. This means The Sun
newspaper is developing a larger
readership online compared to the
hard copies of the newspaper
Year Circulation Figure

47. Hard Or Soft News
The Sun newspaper reports many
different news stories. These
stories are often of the soft news
category. Soft news is news and
information that is primarily used
for entertaining or is personally
useful to people. This type of
news story is often based on
celebrities. This links to The Sun
newspaper because often they
include celebrity news on the
front cover of the newspaper
48. Target Audience
The stereotypical reader of The Sun
newspaper is the “White Van Man”.
This type of person is normally a
male builder who is of middle age,
white ethnicity and is of working
class. Relating to the theory socio
economic needs The Suns main
readership and target audience are
adults of the categories ABC1 and
C2DE. These categories include
people who are of middle class,
lower middle class, skilled working
class, working class and
casual/lowest grade workers
http://www.newsworks.org.uk/The-Sun
49. Style
The Sun newspaper has a very consistent
style. The following images display this
because as you can see the newspaper always
has the masthead in the top left hand corner.
The masthead is also always red with white
bold writing. The next reoccurrence you can
see in The suns front pages are a main story
on the front cover, this may be full page or
half a page but it is always present. The main
story always has the bold white font with an
image of which relates to the story. The other
common featured on the front cover of The
Sun newspaper are the advertisements for
free things that can be found in side, such as
tickets for Thorpe Park. Finally, a feature that
can be seen often on the front cover of The
Sun are the cover lines of other articles that
can be found inside the magazine
50. Conclusion
In conclusion to Unit 30 LO1 I have looked a UK magazine publisher and a UK newspaper publisher.
I first looked at Bauer Media who produce Q magazine. The next stage was for me to analyze the content of Q
magazine. I looked at the genre of the magazine, which was rock, the form and style of the magazine and also
the target audience of the magazine. To further aid my analysis and to help with the creation of my own
magazine in L02 I broke down a front cover from the magazine and also a double page spread. I next spoke
about the technological convergence of Q magazine, this is the technology that Q magazine uses, for example
social media. Next I emailed the head people at Q magazine to see if they could inform me of the production
process of their magazine, the replies I received were unfortunately not very beneficial so I researched the
production process and managed to find it online. I next looked at how Q distribute their magazines and the
associated products of Bauer media. Finally I looked at how Q magazine market and advertise to draw in more
monthly readers of their magazine.
I next looked at News UK who publish The Sun newspaper. I also broke down a front cover and double page
spread of an issue of The Sun newspaper. A further break down I did was to analyze The Sun newspapers
website. Next I looked at the cost of placing an advertisement in The Sun newspaper, this lead me onto
speaking about the demographics of The Sun. I also analysed a how The Sun market, I discovered they use a
large amount of brand extensions to reach out to more consumers per day. I then looked at the synergy of the
newspaper. Finally I analyzed a large amount of general information about The Sun. This included connotations
behind the name, the genre, history of The Sun, the price, circulation figures, the type of news The Sun reports,
the target audience of the newspaper and finally the style of the newspaper.
LO1 has given me ideas on how to create my own published product.

54. Mood Board Conclusion - MMH
This image demonstrates the album cover for JME’s album “Integrity”
I have used this image in my mood board as the artist JME is known
for the grime industry. This is the kind of music I will include inside my
magazine.
This image demonstrates the artist Skepta, I have selected this image
because not only is Skepta an artist who produces music that relates
to the genre of grime. But he also is a fashion icon in the grime
industry. I will be including fashion in my magazine due to the results
of a survey I created on the website SurveyMonkey
(https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk) when asking the question “What
other information would you like to see included in a magazine” the
highest receive answer was “Fashion” with a 65% answer rate.
56. Mood Board Conclusion - Fusion
The use of this image was in order to display the kind of artist and genres of music. Chris
Brown (Left) is a hip hop artist. This links to my summary of ideas as the decided genre of my
first music magazine is hip hop. The image also links to fashion. I have included fashion in my
magazine ideas because upon conducting a survey on the website
https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/ (SurveyMonkey) the feed back I received for the question
“what other information would you like to see included in a magazine” the most selected
option was fashion. This connotes how I could gain an audiences attention by including the
features they are most interested in inside the magazine.
The use of this second image is to mainly focus on the music that will be featured inside my
music magazine. The album “2014 Forest Hills Drive” by the artist J Cole is a hip hop album.
This once again links to my summary of ideas because as stated the main genre of my music
magazine (Fusion) is hip hop. The image also displays some kind of features that will be
visible in my music magazine as the image is of an album cover. This links to how I will review
albums in my music magazine.
57. Front Cover Analysis
The image on the right displays my front cover of inspiration. The
magazine I have chosen is Q. One of the reasons for this is because I
have a good understanding of Q magazine already as I have analyzed
it in depth in LO1. Another reason I have selected this magazine is
because it comes from UK publisher Bauer Media. I believe creating a
similar front cover will be effective as this magazine stands out due to
the bright masthead and the large cover image.
In order to relate my magazine to my magazine of inspiration I intend
to copy the bright masthead with the red box and the white writing as
it is bold and stands out. I will also copy the large image because it
creates an effect of star appeal. The way Liam Gallagher covers part of
the magazine masthead connoted to what a powerful figure he is.
Another feature on the magazine front cover I intend to repeat is the
use of a white background and black cover lines. This is because the
white background and the black writing stands out to a reader making
the magazine stand out more on the shelf. The main image is also
more clear because of the use of a white background brings out the
colours in the image
I will also adapt features of this front cover to make them more
appropriate for my selected genre of magazine, grime. This would
mean me changing features such as the artists used on the cover lines
and the font used for the text as it stereotypically connotes to a more
“upper class” audience
I also intend to add features to the magazine to make it more
attractive to the reader. For example, the use of puff promotion on
the front cover of my magazine. This is an effective feature as it gives
purchases of the magazine chances to win items that relate to a
music magazine. An example of a prize could be a free Spotify
premium membership for a year.
58. Double Page Spread Analysis
Although this magazine interview does not
relate to the genre of my music magazine, I
believe the layout of the interview is
attractive to an audience.
One features I intend to re use from my
double page spread of inspiration is the use
of star appeal. This feature is created by
adding a large image of an artist somewhere
in the magazine interview. I believe it is
effective to do this on the left hand side
because it will be the first thing the audience
see when turning over the page. Another
feature I intend to repeat is the magazine
interview features. These feature include the
use of a pull quote, a stand first, a drop
capital, bold text for the interview question
and lighter text for the answers and also the
page number and magazine logo on the
bottom of each page.
Similar to my front cover of inspiration I will
need to change features from this magazine
interview to suit my genre of music better.
One feature I will change is the background colour of main image in the article to white. This is because not only is this colour not
effective for my selected magazine genre, but also I will be able to follow my form and style of my magazine using the same background
colour for an image as I will use on the front cover. I believe this will make my magazine more professional, making it more likely to be
purchased. Another feature I will change is the font style used on the page. Once again I believe the font is to “upper class” for my
magazine genre. Finally I will change the use of bright colours on the artists clothing as this makes it more likely that the reader will focus
on my artist and not what they are wearing. It is also stereotypical that darker coloured clothing such as navy tracksuits are related to the
grime genre.
59. Genre
Although my magazine is of
inspiration follows the rock
genre of music I do not wish to.
This is because when
conducting a survey on
SurveyMonkey.com I asked the
question “what is your favourite
genre of music” 0% of people
answered “Rock”. The main
genre of my magazine will be
grime. This is due to the use of
the real artist OMEGA on the
front of the magazine. OMEGA
is known for music in the grime
genre. My magazine will also
have aspects of rap and hip-hop
inside but not on a major scale.
60. Style
My finished magazine will have a
style that catches the audience’s
eye, plain and sticking to a strict
colour theme of Monochrome and
Red as this doesn’t distract from
the content of the magazine and
main image. I will also use bold
fonts in my magazine to draw the
audience’s attention because they
are easy to read and stand out.
Finally inside my magazine I will
include the logo of the magazine
and page number on every page,
which is a stereotypical
convention of my genre of
magazine and again makes it
easier and clearer for my
audience.
62. Magazine Flat Plan
This image displays the flat plan of my magazine. This means it displays the
layout I intend to make my magazine follow
Magazine
front
cover
64. Spending Power
My Magazine - As my magazine will be a
new product. I will unfortunately not have
a large amount of spending power in the
first year of production. Gradually as my
magazine grows in popularity I will be able
to invest more money in making my
product a quality item that audiences will
want to consume.
My Audience – My target audience of
people aged 16 – 21 will have a good
amount of spending power. This is
because the majority of people this age
are still in education and living at home.
This means that they have more
disposable income than people who are
older than them.
65. Masthead
The image on the right displays my magazine masthead that I
have designed using Photoshop. I first created a red shaped
box. Next I downloaded my planned magazine font “York
Whiteletter” from the website DaFont. Once the font had
downloaded I added it to my red box I had created. I made the
font white in order to make the text stand out. I then added
the strapline underneath the magazine masthead. My
magazine strapline is “Make Music Happen” and this is
because it is an acronym of the letters in my masthead. I used
the same font for my strapline as I used for my magazine
masthead. This was in order to keep the form and style
planned for my magazine.
Some connotation behind the choices I have made include
choosing the colour red as it displays passion, desire and love.
I believe this will have a positive effect on the audience as
they can understand that my magazine will be made for them
with the three connotation behind the colour red. I also used a
large font in order to connote to the audience that my
magazine is big and powerful and will be filled with the best
information.
66. Form and Style
The layout of my magazine will be very consistent.
Every issue will have the red background and white
text MMH masthead in the top left corner with the
strapline “Make Music Happen” written in a white
underneath. There will then always be a main image in
the center of the page. The main headlines and the
sub lines are then written around the main image. The
colours I will use often are red, black and white. Inside
the magazine the form and style will also be consistent
with features such as page numbers on every page and
images that contain star appeal on most pages. The
fonts used will always be similar and will always be
simple in order to stick with the idea that I want my
magazine to have a professional and consistent form
and style. It is important for my magazine to keep
consistent in order to keep a professional feel and
keep customers happy as they know they can expect
quality from my magazine

68. Magazine Interview
Morning OMEGA, How are you?
I’m fine thanks, what about you?
I’m pretty good thanks for asking, How did the last concert from your “Local Invasion” go last night?
It was lit! Loads of crazy people
We heard! Girls jumping up on stage trying to share the love with you
Yeah…That’s how I like it
Anyway, down to business. The new EP “Local Invasion” straight to number one, how does that make you feel?
The support of the fans has been amazing, to get to number one in the first week is crazy. There are so many other albums that could of done it.
Speaking of other albums, you knocked Dave of the number one spot and we’ve heard there's been some beef on twitter
Some artists are all about themselves, never give respect to new comers in the music business…if I didn't deserve number one Skepta would
never of took me on his tour to be his support act.
We here at MMH believe you deserve that number one spot!
Thank you
Now, more questions, is there any period in your life that has been inspiring on your music?
So many moments. That’s what the albums about, my life! All the hurt and pain, all the happy and good times and especially the times with
friends. But the track “My Time” is one of the ones that really tell the story about some of my favorite times, I guess you guys will have to give it
a listen to find out more.
Interesting that you mentioned “My time” because a little bird has told us that It is your favorite song on the new EP. Would you like to quote
on that?
It is my favorite track by a long way, you’re right, without reveling to much its just the memories it brings back, the lyrics speak to me and I just
hope the people are out there now enjoying it just as much as I enjoyed making it
Finally, we want to know what persuaded you to join BBK?
It wasn’t about what persuaded me, its about what persuaded them
Expand on that, reveal it to us, what are your true feelings behind being a member?
Excitement mainly, its an unreal feeling to be working with the people that gave me so much inspiration for my music. I remember featuring on
JME’s track way back and thinking nothing of it, but when I got that text telling me to join BBK and release an EP I was running round naked
cause I was so happy I had the guys from BBK support
Were happy to hear that everything worked out well for you, you deserve it, thank you for speaking to us today!
Thank you, I enjoyed it
We enjoyed to, carry on making that great quality music and we at MMH will be sure to come for a second interview
That sounds great

72. Legal and Ethical Issues
When creating my magazine there are rules to which I and my magazine
must follow. This is so there will be a lack of complaints to deal with when
the magazine is released. This means that no harm or offence will be
experienced from any of the magazines consumers. One of the main rules
when creating magazines “Particular care must be taken to avoid causing
offence on the grounds of race, religion, gender, sexuality, disability or
age”
One ethnicity issue my magazine may face is the heavy involvement of
more black ethnicity artist than white ethnicity.
73. Complaints
I will need to include a complaints procedure to my magazine. This is
so that anybody who wishes to make a complaint can make one. I
have investigated how The Sun newspaper deals with their
complaints. The procedure is extremely simple and I will intend to
follow it in order to allow my magazine readers to make complaints.
The Sun newspaper have an extremely simple complaints system
which can be found on The Suns website. If a reader of The Sun is
offended by something they see or read in the newspaper they can
email ombudsman@the-sun.co.uk . The other way to complain if you
feel it is necessary is to post a letter to the address
The Ombudsan
The Sun

The Sun aim to reply to all complaints within a 5 day period
https://www.thesun.co.uk/editorial-

74. Complaints Example – Waitrose Taste
Of Israel Magazine
A magazine that has recently had a large amount of complaints was
Waitrose food magazine titled the “Taste Of Israel” The Taste of Israel
magazine was created by the state's tourist board and was featured inside
the February issue of the monthly Waitrose Kitchen Magazine. The
magazine included information about the history of food in Israel, common
ingredients and dishes, a feature on market
tours, as well as recipes for dishes such as
shakshuka, falafel and humus.
And humus. Campaigners have found fault with the magazine, and
complained that it not only appropriates Palestinian culture, but also
ignores what they regard to be an illegal occupation and an “apartheid
regime”. Some customers have expressed their anger over the insert on
Twitter and pledged to boycott the supermarket. Waitrose have chosen to
defend the magazine and the case is on going

75. Complaints Example– That’s Life!
Magazine
That’s Life! Magazine is a weekly magazine that reports real life. The magazine
has been produced by Bauer Media since 1995. The magazine has circulation
figures of around 275,000 per week. The magazine came under scrutiny in April
2013 for breaking Clause 16 of the Editors Code of Practice. Treena McIntyre
complained to the PCC over a story about the murder of her brother Steven
McIntyre by his stepson Christopher Hodgson. The magazine argued that Ms
Hodgson was a “victim” of the crime and that it did not seek to glorify or
glamorise the murder. Clause 16 of the Editors’ Code states that “Payment or
offers of payment for stories, pictures or information, which seek to exploit a
particular crime or to glorify or glamorise crime in general, must not be made
directly or via agents to convicted or confessed criminals or to their associates –
who may include family, friends and colleagues.” More complaints have been
made about the issue of the magazine. For example, complaints came about the
article as some people believed it was an “intrusion intro grief or shock” this
then means that the article would also be breaking Clause 5 of The Editors Code
of Practice.
76. Primary Research
For my primary research I decided to create a survey. The survey was
created on the website SurveyMonkey. I created 10 questions based on
music magazines, for example questions such as ‘how much would you
pay for a music magazine?’ I sent the survey to my teachers and
classmates.
77. Primary Research
The first question I asked in my
survey was ‘how old are you’ I
gave the options of 0-12, 13 -21,
22-31, 32-41, 41-50 and 51+
The data I received back is as
shown
• 0% 0-12
• 90% 13-21
• 0% 22-31
• 10% 32-41
• 0% 41-50
• 0% 51+
This data connotes to the
demographics of Q magazine. This
because it demonstrates younger a
younger audience participating in
the music magazine survey, but
also demonstrates 10% of people
who answered the survey were in
Q’s median age of a reader (34)
78. Primary Research
My second question was ‘what is
your favourite genre of music’ I
gave the options of Hip/Hop,
Rock, Classic, R&B, Electronic,
Reggae and Other
The results I received back were
• 60% Hip/Hop
• 0% Rock
• 0% Classic
• 0% R&B
• 10% Electronic
• 20% Reggae
• 0% Other
This information connotes that
the most popular genre of music
with the youth today is Hip/Hop.
This relates to Q magazine as it is
one of the many genres they
focus on.
79. Primary Research
My third question was ‘do you
read music magazines?’ I asked
this question to specify if people
are bothered about reading
magazines based on music. I gave
the options of All the time,
Sometimes and Never
The data I received back included
• 0% All the time
• 35% Sometimes
• 65% Never
This data displays the fact that
people are not very interested in
reading music magazines. This
information could help improve Q
magazine as they may be more
likely to sell magazines on other
formats upon knowing this
information.
80. Primary Research
The fourth question on my
questionnaire was to find out what
features people are most interested
in when looking at music
magazines. In order to find this out I
asked the question ‘what features
would interest you most in a music
magazine?’ I gave the options of
interviews, reviews, tour dates,
vouches, competitions and other.
The results I received back included
• 19% Interviews
• 9% Reviews
• 35% Tour Dates
• 9% Vouches
• 28% Competitions
This connotes that people would be
most interested in tour dates
meaning this idea could link to puff
promotion and make winning
tickets available.
81. Primary Research
The question ’what would be the
most suited puff promotion for
you?’ included the options of
concert tickets, iTunes voucher,
meet and greet with the artist and
other
The answers I received back
included
• 45% Concert Tickets
• 18% iTunes Voucher
• 28% Meet The Artist
• 9% Other
As concert tickets was most popular
this connotes well to the previous
question in the questionnaire ‘what
features would interest you most in
a music magazine?’ The highest
percentage answer was ‘Tour Dates’
at 35%. This demonstrates the
information the younger ages
attracted to music magazines have a
high interest of attending concerts
82. Primary Research
The next question I asked was
‘what other information would you
like to see included in a magazine?’
The answers I included for this
question were fashion, sport,
television programs to look out for
and other
The results I received back were
• 65% Fashion
• 15% Sport
• 10% Television Programs
• 10% Other
This information connoted that a
younger audience that is interested
in music magazines also like to see
fashion. This links to ‘Maslow’s
hierarchy of needs’ as following the
latest fashions displays social
climbers
83. Conclusion
In conclusion LO2 was where I began to plan my music magazine.
I first made a mind map with all my ideas for my magazine, I then highlighted my main idea in red and left my second alternative idea in black. I created a mood board
and a mood board conclusion for both my ideas . The mood board included images that I were related to the genre of my music magazine. After establishing my main
idea I went on to find inspiration on how I could design my magazine front cover and double page spread. I found designs I liked and stated what I will copy and what I
will change based on my magazine. Next I discussed the genre of my music magazine and the style of my magazine. I then moved on to writing a proposal for my
magazine. This included information about my magazine such as the format, the working title, the genre, the content, the style, the audience, the length and finally the
frequency of my magazine. The next step for me was to create a magazine flat plan. This displayed how I wish to layout my magazine, it also displays how many
articles, adverts and extra information I will include in my magazine. In order to make my magazine sell I needed to realize the spending power of not only myself but
my audience, I analyzed this in the following slide. Next I designed my magazine masthead. The next steps were to plan for my magazines form and style, fonts, images,
interviews and the production timeline of my magazine.
In order to display I understand the legal issues behind creating a magazine I looked at legal and ethical rules and complaints. I further looked at complaints by
providing example of what can happen if I do not follow the editors code of practice.
Finally I conducted primary research for my magazine by creating a survey on SurveyMonkey which I asked my peers to answer. This allowed me to see what the most
effective information I should include in my magazine as the answers of the survey came from members of my target audience
LO2 has allowed me to gather information and plan a music magazine idea in my head.

87. Planned Form and Style
88. Photography Location & Equipment
The following images display the equipment I will use for my photos and the
locations I will use for my images. The equipment images consist of a Nikon
D3100 and a tripod. I used the Nikon camera to take high quality images for my
front cover and double page spread. I used the tripod to keep the camera
steady when taking the pictures making them an even better quality.
The location images consist of the media corridor at St Andrews Catholic
School, Leatherhead and outside of St Andrews Catholic School. I used two
locations in my images in order to get a different styles of images. The location
inside the media corridor was well lit by the indoor lighting so I did not need
extra lighting. The location in the corridor was also good as the white
background made the candidate stand out allowing me to conduct Photoshop
work more easily. The location outside was also naturally lit but upon editing
the images it was harder to make the candidate stand out against the wall. I
used the images I took in the media coridoor for my front page of my magazine
and have used the images I took outside St Andrews Catholic School for my
double page spread.

91. Printing Quotes And Costs
The image above demonstrates a rough estimate on how much it will cost to print and
deliver my magazines ready for distribution to customers. The estimated total to print
15,000 copies of my magazine would be £8093 to £9712. This price is then increased to
around £9000 as there is a £737 delivery charge
https://print24.com/uk/product/magazines/
92. Advertising Revenue
Advert Style Cost
Half Page £2750
Full Page 13 £5000
Double Page Spread 4 £9000
Inside my magazine I have 21 pages of advertisements. This is
based over 61 pages. 13 of my advertisements are full page and
the other 4 advertisements are double page spread, adding up
to 8 more pages. 13 full page advertisements creates £65,000
revenue for the business. 4 double page advertisements
creates £36,000 in revenue for the business. This added
together creates £101,000 in revenue for the company. This
over a 12 month period generates £1,212,000 for the business.
£5000 (Full Page Advert Cost) x 13 (Number Of Full Page Adverts) = £65,000
£9000 (Double Page Spread Advert Cost) x 4 (Number Of Double Page Spread Adverts) = £36,000
£65,000 (Money Raised From Full Page Adverts) + £36,000 (Money Raised From Double Page Spread Adverts) = £101,000
£101,000 (Total Money Raised Per Magazine) x 12 (Months In The Year) = £1,212,000
93. Social Media Adverts
Using social media to advertise my magazine will be extremely beneficial as it
will not cost any further money to advertise. Often creating a social media
account is free. For example Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. Pages can be
made on these social media websites for free and readers of the magazine
can decide whether or not they want to follow or like the page to get regular
updates about my magazine.
Another free social media website I can use is YouTube. Although free to
make account some time and money may need to be invested in creating
videos and advertisements for the channel based around my magazine.
YouTube is extremely useful because as people subscribe and watch videos
based on my magazine it can generate revenue, not only from people
watching the videos themselves but it will make people want to purchase my
magazine.
94. Facebook Adverts
These images display my adverts
for my magazines on the social
media page Facebook. The pages
have my logo as the banner and
my latest issue of the magazine
as the profile picture. Facebook
will allow me to promote my
page with them for £5 a day for a
period of time. This is beneficial
because it will stem out to my
target audience all across a large
social media platform, potentially
bringing in customers.
Promoting my page on Facebook will cost £3,640. When this has been paid Facebook will share my page
with my target audience allowing them to see my magazine.
95. Distribution To Retailer Costs
After researching distribution to retailer costs I discovered there was no set fee in order to send out
my magazine to retailers. This is partially because this is my first magazine.

They also state that my

double page spread better,
it stated flattening the

110. Step By Step – Front Cover
Step One: When I began to make my magazine front cover I used my magazine of inspiration, hand drawn drafts and
graphic layouts as inspiration. I used the paint brush tool with an opacity of 50% and made the brush soft. I then
increased the size of the brush so the spread of the colour will be greater. I chose a soft brush in order to make the
colours blend together well. In order to make the background look as much like my inspiration magazine as possible I
used the eye drop tool on my magazine of inspiration background.
Step Two: After creating the background I added my main image to my front cover. I used the quick selection tool to
remove the background of the image. In order to make the image stand out against the background I added a stroke
and a drop shadow to the image.
I then added the logo of my magazine on a layer behind my main image. To create my logo I used the shape tool to
create a red rectangular box for the text “MMH” to go inside. To add the text I used the text tool and used the
“Calibri (Body)” font to create a bold designed font. In order to make my logo stand out I added a drop shadow
effect to the red rectangle outlining the “MMH” title
The fourth step to creating my front cover was to add my strapline “Make Music Happen” underneath the logo of
my magazine. In order to add this I used the text tool and typed the the strapline underneath my logo in the same
font I used in the logo of my magazine “Calibri (Body)”. I also placed this behind my main image.
111. Step By Step - Front Cover
(Continued)
The fifth step in creating my magazine front cover was to add a barcode to my front cover. I did this by inserting a
rectangle shape in white with the shape tool and placing the image of a barcode on top of this shape. I then
added the price, £3.99, the social media account, @MMH_MAG (For Twitter and Instagram) and finally the social
media logos.
Next I added the puff promotion to the
front of my magazine, 1 year free of Spotify,
which would be available to win inside the
magazine. I inserted the Spotify logo and
curved the text “WIN WIN WIN” around it.
The next step of creating my front cover was to use a text box to create my main headline of my magazine. I used
the text tool and typed my heading “OMEGA LOCAL INVASION EP” in order to make this stand out I added a
stroke in the colour black behind the text. I used the window character and reduced the size of the gaps between
the text. Finally I tilted the text at an angle in order to make it more interesting for the audience to view
The second to last step of creating my front cover was to add the left hand side cover lines. In order to do this I
used the text tool and typed in the cover line. To make it interesting to the reader I changed the colour of the font
from white to black halfway through the cover line. In order to keep my front cover consistent I used the “Calibri
(Body)” font again and made it bold.
In order to finish my magazine front cover I
created the right hand side cover lines. Once
again I used the “Calibri (Body)’ font to keep
consistency and used the white and black text
colours in order to keep my magazine
interesting. I also used the the shape tool to
create the red line which break up my cover
lines. I added a plus sign that was an intricate
design to keep my magazine interesting.
112. Step By Step – Double Page
Spread
In order to create my double page spread I will use the Adobe software InDesign.
Step One – Open InDesign and created a double page by adding another A4 page to the original single page. Set up the page by splitting the
right hand side page into two. Add text boxes to half the page for interview to go into and left the other half empty to add interview headline
and stand first. The page on the left hand side was left blank for me to add my main image to.
Step Two – The second step will be to import my image of my artist into the magazine interview. I will do this by going to the Insert tab and
clicking picture. I will then select the image created with the pink background, to fit my magazine house style, and place it in the middle of the
page.
Step Three - The next stage of creating my magazine double page will be to add the magazine headline and stand first. My headline is simply
the artists name and my stand first is “Local Invasion EP”. As I already have this text as an image file, because the the headline was on my
magazine front cover, I will import it as an image to the InDesign document.
113. Step By Step – Double Page
Spread (Continued)
Step Four – Step four required me to import my magazine interview to the text boxes created. I will do this by copying my interview
draft text from the word document by pressing “CTRL + C” and pasting it into the text boxes created by pressing “CTRL + V”. I will
change the questions to pink and the answers to black. I will have dead space between the magazine interview and headline so
intend to add the artists logo and social media to the area of the stand first.
Step Five – Step five will be simple and short. In order to make my magazine look professional I will include a drop capital. I will do
this by increasing the size of the first letter in my magazine interview
Step Six – Once again step six is a simple step. I will use a quote from the magazines interview and increase the size of it to use a pull
quote to try to make audiences read the interview.
Step Seven – In order to follow my magazines form and style I will add my magazine logo to the bottom of each page by importing the
logo image file. I will also add a page number using text boxes.
114. Safe Working Practices
Safe working practices are methods that tell
people how to perform a task with minimum
risk to people, equipment, materials,
environment and processes. One safe working
practice I used in the creation of my magazine
was to hold the shift button down when resizing
images for my magazine front cover and double
page spread. This keeps the images from getting
stretched and pixelated. This has given my
magazine a professional finish.
115. Conclusion
LO3 allowed me to carry on planning my music magazine and also is where I created my first draft of my final front cover and double page spread.
I first of all repeated my production plan that gives me a break down of what tasks I must complete before a certain date. This is important as it will allow me to
release my magazine on time. Next I spoke about the planned form and style of my magazine, it was important to plan form and style in order to keep my magazine
professional. Next I planned my photo-shoot for my magazine, this required me to find the correct equipment and location for the images to be taken.
Moving on I looked at the costs over the year for creating my magazine. After seeing I would spend around £384,568 over the year I needed to make sure I made this
money back and also made a profit. Over the year I have planned to make a return of £1,271,850. This leaves me with an overall profit of £887,282.
After working out my costs I could start to plan my magazine more efficiently as I knew my budget. This meant I looked at my magazine features again. This included
my interview, my flat plan, my masthead and my fonts. After this I began to design rough copies of my magazine. Using hand drawn drafts and graphic layouts I could
see what my magazine would look like after creation. Being happy with the results I went ahead and designed my first magazine front cover and double page spread. I
received feedback from two professional on each of these.
Finally I displayed how I created my magazine front cover and double page spread using a step by step
This allowed me to prepare for LO4 where I would need to pitch my magazine to my peers.
116.
117. Environment Of Presentation
The following images display the
environment I did my pitch in, it also
displays the equipment I used to do
my pitch. In order to do my pitch I
used the software Prezi. I displayed
my pitch on the white board in the
center of the room in order so that
the audience can see it clearly. To
change slides on Prezi I used the
next button on the clicker I had
been provided with. The images
also display the camera and the
tripod that was used to film my
pitch. Finally the image of the iMac
computer displays the computer I
used to create my pitch on and also
what I used to project the pitch onto
the whiteboard.
118. Evidence Of Pitch
The following images display me delivering my pitch to an audience. My pitch
was filmed in order to allow me to watch it back and find the advantages and
disadvantages of my pitch.
119. Conclusion
LO4 of Unit 30 required me to pitch my magazine to an audience and two professionals. I provided all the
previous information about the planning of my magazine, the costs and the finalized products. I then asked the
audience to review my pitch using a survey I had created on SurveyMonkey.
After the pitch I collected my feedback from the professionals in a witness statement. This statement explained
the things I did well in my pitch and in the creation of my magazine and also the things I could improve on.
It was also important that I analysed the environment of my presentation. I created a slide in LO4 to
demonstrate what equipment and what location I conducted my pitch in. I also provided evidence of my pitch
where I screen shotted the video version of my pitch

124. Double Page Spread Improvements
The following images demonstrate the changes I have made to my double page spread based on the
feedback I received on my witness statement. The audiences opinion was I should add the web address of
my magazines website to the bottom of each page of my magazine, I also made my pull quote larger to draw
more attention to the quote. Finally I added credits to the photographer and writer of the article

125. Calendar Events
I have chosen to release my magazine on the 2nd January 2017. This is because it is the start of a
new week in the new year. I have also chosen to release my magazine on this day as there are no
other calendar events schedule, such as public holidays, that may reduce the amount of consumers
of my magazine.

128. Conclusion
LO5 of Unit 30 has allowed me to finalize my magazine. I first demonstrated my witness statements
from my pitch to display the feedback I received. I then focused on my strengths from the pitch, it
was fair to say I impressed in my pitch as I received brilliant feedback.
I then looked into detail about the things I could of done better in my pitch. I chose to act on these
EBI’s to create the perfect finalized product. I demonstrated these changes in my front cover and
double page spread improvement slides.
I finalized LO5 by looking at calendar events that match the release day of my magazine. I was
pleased to find out that there was no events that would distract people from the release day of my
magazine.
