Mood Board
Mood Board Conclusion
This image demonstrates the album cover for JME’s album “Integrity” I
have used this image in my mood board as the artist JME is known for
the grime industry. This is the kind of music I will include inside my
magazine.
This image demonstrates the artist Skepta, I have selected this image
because not only is Skepta an artist who produces music that relates to
the genre of grime. But he also is a fashion icon in the grime industry. I
will be including fashion in my magazine due to the results of a survey I
created on the website SurveyMonkey
(https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk) when asking the question “What
other information would you like to see included in a magazine” the
highest receive answer was “Fashion” with a 65% answer rate.
House Style

Inspiration Magazine :
MMH
I have chosen this magazine because as my second
magazine of inspiration because I believe it will be
easy to recreate. The simplicity behind the magazine
is also effective because it captures an audiences eye
better as there is less to look at which may distract
the audience. This magazine also makes it clear who
is the topic in the magazine as the title “TRAVIS
SCOTT Rage Against The Machine” is clearly visible to
people passing by. This means whilst on the shelves in
the shops if a Travis Scott fan sees the magazine they
are likely to buy it. If it wasn’t clear who the magazine
was based on it may reduce sales. The pink
background may connote that the magazine is not
just targeted at a male audience, as stereotypically
the hip hop/rap genre targets a young black male, it
may also be targeted a the females interested in
Travis Scott. I believe I should recreate this because it
will attract more people to my magazine. In this issue
I will also recreate how XXL use a red box for the logo
because it makes it stand out.
What will I ‘repeat’ Steve Neale
(1980)
The things I will repeat to
make my first magazine,
MMH, look effective are
the cover lines, the small
paragraph that explains
what is inside the
magazine, the barcode,
the font used for the
magazine headline, an
image of the artist inside
my magazine and finally
the colours of the
magazine (pink)

Interview Draft Plan
When planning for what I could include in my
double page spread I had to think of something that
will bring readers to my magazine to increase sales.
In order to do this I chose to use the technique of
“star appeal” and include and interview with an
artist inside the magazine. “Star Appeal” is a theory
from Richard Dyer that states that people are
drawn to magazines that include information about
celebrities as they want to climb up social ranks.
The layout I intend to have for my interview is my
question followed by the artists answer
underneath. On my double page spread I will
include a headline in a large font to draw readers to
my interview, an image of my artist that will take up
the whole left hand page, a drop capital to make
the start of my interview visible, a stand first in
order to explain what the interview Is about, a pull
quote to draw readers into the interview and finally
I will keep my form and style and involve a page
number and logo at the bottom of the interview

Morning OMEGA, How are you?
I’m fine thanks, what about you?
I’m pretty good thanks for asking, How did the last concert from your “Local Invasion” go last night?
It was lit! Loads of crazy people
We heard! Girls jumping up on stage trying to share the love with you
Yeah…That’s how I like it
Anyway, down to business. The new EP “Local Invasion” straight to number one, how does that make you feel?
The support of the fans has been amazing, to get to number one in the first week is crazy. There are so many other
albums that could of done it.
Speaking of other albums, you knocked Dave of the number one spot and we’ve heard there's been some beef on
twitter
Some artists are all about themselves, never give respect to new comers in the music business…if I didn't deserve
number one Skepta would never of took me on his tour to be his support act.
We here at MMH believe you deserve that number one spot!
Thank you
Now, more questions, is there any period in your life that has been inspiring on your music?
So many moments. That’s what the albums about, my life! All the hurt and pain, all the happy and good times and
especially the times with friends. But the track “My Time” is one of the ones that really tell the story about some of
my favorite times, I guess you guys will have to give it a listen to find out more.
Interesting that you mentioned “My time” because a little bird has told us that It is your favorite song on the new
EP. Would you like to quote on that?
It is my favorite track by a long way, you’re right, without reveling to much its just the memories it brings back, the
lyrics speak to me and I just hope the people are out there now enjoying it just as much as I enjoyed making it
Finally, we want to know what persuaded you to join BBK?
It wasn’t about what persuaded me, its about what persuaded them
Expand on that, reveal it to us, what are your true feelings behind being a member?
Excitement mainly, its an unreal feeling to be working with the people that gave me so much inspiration for my
music. I remember featuring on JME’s track way back and thinking nothing of it, but when I got that text telling me to
join BBK and release an EP I was running round naked cause I was so happy I had the guys from BBK support
Were happy to hear that everything worked out well for you, you deserve it, thank you for speaking to us today!
Thank you, I enjoyed it
We enjoyed to, carry on making that great quality music and we at MMH will be sure to come for a second
interview
That sounds great
Photo Shoot Plan
Photo Shoot Plan (Continued)
Test Photography
The following images display the pictures I took for my magazine. I chose two
candidates that could link to the hip-hop/grime genre of my magazine. I chose my
second candidate, OMEGA, as I believed that the images I took were a better quality
and would fit my magazine better. I chose a selection of different poses for my
candidate as I wanted to have different images for my front cover and double page
spread. I also chose different backgrounds to make the images more interesting. After
taking my images I analysed them and decided that I will use the image titled
“DSC_0047” for my front cover and the image titled “DSC_0217” for my double page
spread. I will use Photoshop to edit these images to make them more professional.
Prop List
Prop Check

Cap
Tracksuit Hoodie
Jeans
DSLR Camera
Tripod
Lighting
I have created a prop list to help me plan
for the photo-shoot of my chosen artist for
my magazine, OMEGA. These props are
important as without these I will not be
able to produce a professional piece of
work. I will use the cap, tracksuit hoodie
and jeans as the clothing for my artist on
the front of the magazine. I will use the
DSLR camera, tripod and lighting to take
professional images that will stand out on
the the front of my magazine.
Photography Location &
Equipment
The following images display the equipment I will use for my photos and
the locations I will use for my images. The equipment images consist of a
Nikon D3100 and a tripod. I used the Nikon camera to take high quality
images for my front cover and double page spread. I used the tripod to keep
the camera steady when taking the pictures making them an even better
quality.
The location images consist of the media corridor at St Andrews Catholic
School, Leatherhead and outside of St Andrews Catholic School. I used two
locations in my images in order to get a different styles of images. The
location inside the media corridor was well lit by the indoor lighting so I did
not need extra lighting. The location in the corridor was also good as the
white background made the candidate stand out allowing me to conduct
Photoshop work more easily. The location outside was also naturally lit but
upon editing the images it was harder to make the candidate stand out
against the wall. I used the images I took in the media coridoor for my front
page of my magazine and have used the images I took outside St Andrews
Catholic School for my double page spread.
Risk Assessment
The following two images display my photography
consent forms. This displays how I got consent from the
people I have taken images of to use on my front cover
and inside the magazine. The form included an area for
the model in my images to sign there full name, date of
birth, address and contact details. The form also gives the
location of the shoot and proof of permission.

Conclusion
In LO1 I have looked at planning for the creation of my magazine MMH. I created a mind map
with my magazine ideas on. This is so all my ideas were in one place and I could start putting
my magazine together. I next created a mood board which contained images of artists that
would feature in my magazine. I chose these images as they fitted in with the genre of my
magazine, Hip Hop/Grime. My next slide looked at the house styles for my magazine. This
slide is where I decided the genre, size, price and colours of my magazine. My final ideas was
to have a magazine that features the Hip Hop/ Grime genre. The magazine would be A4 size
and be priced at £3.99. Finally the colours would be pink, black and white. The next slide told
audiences what my magazine of inspiration was, the slide after than demonstrated what
features from the magazine I would repeat. The next slide in my presentation displayed my
final magazine font. I then planned and wrote an interview for my magazine. This would be
my double page spread. In order to make my magazine more interesting I needed to include
images, I planned a photo-shoot and did some test photography which was displayed in my
presentation. I had to use the correct props and location for my photo-shoot, I analysed
these in my presentation. I next came up with a production plan for creating my magazine so
that I would have it ready for release on 2nd January 2017. The final stage of LO1 was to
create rough layouts of my magazine so I drew some drafts and also created graphic layouts
of what my magazine should look like.

Legal and Ethical Issues
When creating my magazine there are rules
to which I and my magazine must follow.
This is so there will be a lack of complaints
to deal with when the magazine is released.
This means that no harm or offence will be
experienced from any of the magazines
consumers. One of the main rules when
creating magazines “Particular care must be
taken to avoid causing offence on the
grounds of race, religion, gender, sexuality,
disability or age”
One ethnicity issue my magazine may face is
the heavy involvement of more black
ethnicity artist than white ethnicity.
Copyright ©
Copyright is the procedure where
somebody obtains a legal right to any kind
of item. This then protects the item from
being copied by a third party assessors.
Copyright can be used to protect many
items such as magazines, music and
images.
For Example, Q magazine have copyright on
all of the magazines they produce.
Evidence of this can be seen on Q’s
magazines website. The footer of the
website states “©Bauer Consumer Media.
All Rights Reserved“
This means that Bauer, Q magazines
publisher, have set laws to protect their
products. Looking at the statement “All
Rights Reserved” this means nothing that
Bauer media create can be copyrighted as
it is all of their content.
I will need to obtain copyright on my
magazine in order to make sure all my
products are safe from being stolen from
any other people or companies.
http://www.qthemusic.com
Watermark
I added the watermark to the
front cover of my magazine in
order to protect the image.
This watermark protects the
image as upon trying to edit
the image the watermark
would make this impossible. I
needed to watermark this
image because of copyright.
Watermarking this image also
means I am following the data
protection act 1998 by
keeping the image protected
as stated in my photography
consent form
Data Protection Act 1988
The data protection act controls how personal information is
used by organizations, businesses or the government.
• Used fairly and lawfully
• Used for limited, specifically stated purposes
• Used in a way that is adequate, relevant and not
excessive
• Accurate
• Kept for no longer than is absolutely necessary
• Handled according to people’s data protection rights
• Kept safe and secure
Not transferred outside the There is stronger legal
protection for more sensitive information, such as:
• Ethnic background
• Political opinions
• Religious beliefs
• Health
• Sexual health
• Criminal records

Editors Code of Practice
The editors code of practice are a set of rules by IPSO that all magazines and newspapers have to follow
when creating their products. The latest editors code of practice came into effect on 1st January 2016.
There are 16 segments to the rules, these include…
•Accuracy
•Privacy
•Harassment
•Intrusion into grief or shock
•Reporting suicide
•Children
•Children in sex cases
•Hospitals
•Reporting of crime
•Clandestine devices and subterfuge
•Victims of sexual assault
•Discrimination
•Financial journalism
•Confidential sources
•Witness payments in criminal trials
•Payment to criminals
Complaints
I will need to include a complaints procedure to my
magazine. This is so that anybody who wishes to make
a complaint can make one. I have investigated how The
Sun newspaper deals with their complaints. The
procedure is extremely simple and I will intend to
follow it in order to allow my magazine readers to
make complaints.
The Sun newspaper have an extremely simple
complaints system which can be found on The Suns
website. If a reader of The Sun is offended by
something they see or read in the newspaper they can
email ombudsman@the-sun.co.uk . The other way to
complain if you feel it is necessary is to post a letter to
the address

Complaints Case Study – Waitrose Taste
Of Israel Magazine
A magazine that has recently had a large amount of complaints was
Waitrose food magazine titled the “Taste Of Israel” The Taste of Israel
magazine was created by the state's tourist board and was featured
inside the February issue of the monthly Waitrose Kitchen
Magazine. The magazine included information about the history of
food in Israel, common ingredients and dishes, a feature on
market tours, as well as recipes for dishes such as
shakshuka, falafel and humus.
Campaigners have found fault with the magazine, and complained that it
not only appropriates Palestinian culture, but also ignores what they
regard to be an illegal occupation and an “apartheid regime”. Some
customers have expressed their anger over the insert on Twitter and
pledged to boycott the supermarket. Waitrose have chosen to defend the
magazine and the case is on going

Complaints Case Study – That’s Life!
Magazine
That’s Life! Magazine is a weekly magazine that reports real life. The magazine
has been produced by Bauer Media since 1995. The magazine has circulation
figures of around 275,000 per week. The magazine came under scrutiny in
April 2013 for breaking Clause 16 of the Editors Code of Practice. Treena
McIntyre complained to the PCC over a story about the murder of her brother
Steven McIntyre by his stepson Christopher Hodgson. The magazine argued
that Ms Hodgson was a “victim” of the crime and that it did not seek to glorify
or glamorise the murder. Clause 16 of the Editors’ Code states that “Payment
or offers of payment for stories, pictures or information, which seek to exploit a
particular crime or to glorify or glamorise crime in general, must not be made
directly or via agents to convicted or confessed criminals or to their associates
– who may include family, friends and colleagues.” More complaints have
been made about the issue of the magazine. For example, complaints came
about the article as some people believed it was an “intrusion intro grief or
shock” this then means that the article would also be breaking Clause 5 of The
Editors Code of Practice.
Conclusion
In LO2 I created a location recce to help with my photo-
shoot. The location recce analysed the location, time and
date of the shoot, the picture required for my magazine,
the permission I needed for the images and a hazards
report of the area of the shoot. Once this information was
gathered I could keep track of the photo shoot and keep
everybody safe. To make the shoot even more efficient I
created a photography plan which worked in the same
way as the location recce. I next moved on to all the legal
issues of creating a magazine. I looked at copyright,
watermarks, the data protection act of 1988, the editors
code of practice and how people may make complaints to
my magazine. I next looked at two case studies of
magazines that had complaints for breaking legal issues.

Photography Location & Equipment
The following images display the equipment I will use for my photos and the
locations I will use for my images. The equipment images consist of a Nikon
D3100 and a tripod. I used the Nikon camera to take high quality images for my
front cover and double page spread. I used the tripod to keep the camera
steady when taking the pictures making them an even better quality.
The location images consist of the media corridor at St Andrews Catholic
School, Leatherhead and outside of St Andrews Catholic School. I used two
locations in my images in order to get a different styles of images. The location
inside the media corridor was well lit by the indoor lighting so I did not need
extra lighting. The location in the corridor was also good as the white
background made the candidate stand out allowing me to conduct Photoshop
work more easily. The location outside was also naturally lit but upon editing
the images it was harder to make the candidate stand out against the wall. I
used the images I took in the media corridor for my front page of my magazine
and have used the images I took outside St Andrews Catholic School for my
double page spread.
Step By Step – Front Cover
Step One: When I began to make my magazine front cover I used my magazine of
inspiration, hand drawn drafts and graphic layouts as inspiration. I used the paint brush
tool with an opacity of 50% and made the brush soft. I then increased the size of the
brush so the spread of the colour will be greater. I chose a soft brush in order to make
the colours blend together well. In order to make the background look as much like my
inspiration magazine as possible I used the eye drop tool on my magazine of inspiration
background.
Step Two: After creating the background I added my main image to my front cover. I
used the quick selection tool to remove the background of the image. In order to
make the image stand out against the background I added a stroke and a drop shadow
to the image.
I then added the logo of my magazine on a layer behind my main image. To create my
logo I used the shape tool to create a red rectangular box for the text “MMH” to go
inside. To add the text I used the text tool and used the “Calibri (Body)” font to create
a bold designed font. In order to make my logo stand out I added a drop shadow
effect to the red rectangle outlining the “MMH” title
The fourth step to creating my front cover was to add my strapline “Make Music
Happen” underneath the logo of my magazine. In order to add this I used the text
tool and typed the the strapline underneath my logo in the same font I used in the
logo of my magazine “Calibri (Body)”. I also placed this behind my main image.
Step By Step – Front Cover
(Continued)
The fifth step in creating my magazine front cover was to add a barcode to my front
cover. I did this by inserting a rectangle shape in white with the shape tool and
placing the image of a barcode on top of this shape. I then added the price, £3.99,
the social media account, @MMH_MAG (For Twitter and Instagram) and finally the
social media logos.
Next I added the puff
promotion to the front of my
magazine, 1 year free of Spotify,
which would be available to win
inside the magazine. I inserted
the Spotify logo and curved the
text “WIN WIN WIN” around it.
The next step of creating my front cover was to use a text box to create my main
headline of my magazine. I used the text tool and typed my heading “OMEGA LOCAL
INVASION EP” in order to make this stand out I added a stroke in the colour black
behind the text. I used the window character and reduced the size of the gaps
between the text. Finally I tilted the text at an angle in order to make it more
interesting for the audience to view
The second to last step of creating my front cover was to add the left hand side
cover lines. In order to do this I used the text tool and typed in the cover line. To
make it interesting to the reader I changed the colour of the font from white to black
halfway through the cover line. In order to keep my front cover consistent I used the
“Calibri (Body)” font again and made it bold.
In order to finish my magazine front cover I
created the right hand side cover lines. Once
again I used the “Calibri (Body)’ font to keep
consistency and used the white and black
text colours in order to keep my magazine
interesting. I also used the the shape tool to
create the red line which break up my cover
lines. I added a plus sign that was an intricate
design to keep my magazine interesting.
Step By Step – Double Page
Spread
In order to create my double page spread I will use the Adobe software InDesign.
Step One – Open InDesign and created a double page by adding another A4 page to the original single page.
Set up the page by splitting the right hand side page into two. Add text boxes to half the page for interview to
go into and left the other half empty to add interview headline and stand first. The page on the left hand side
was left blank for me to add my main image to.
Step Two – The second step will be to import my image of my artist into the magazine interview. I will do this
by going to the Insert tab and clicking picture. I will then select the image created with the pink background, to
fit my magazine house style, and place it in the middle of the page.
Step Three - The next stage of creating my magazine double page will be to add the magazine headline and
stand first. My headline is simply the artists name and my stand first is “Local Invasion EP”. As I already have
this text as an image file, because the the headline was on my magazine front cover, I will import it as an image
to the InDesign document.
Step By Step – Double Page
Spread (Continued)
Step Four – Step four required me to import my magazine interview to the text boxes created. I will do
this by copying my interview draft text from the word document by pressing “CTRL + C” and pasting it
into the text boxes created by pressing “CTRL + V”. I will change the questions to pink and the answers
to black. I will have dead space between the magazine interview and headline so intend to add the
artists logo and social media to the area of the stand first.
Step Five – Step five will be simple and short. In order to make my magazine look professional I will
include a drop capital. I will do this by increasing the size of the first letter in my magazine interview
Step Six – Once again step six is a simple step. I will use a quote from the magazines interview and
increase the size of it to use a pull quote to try to make audiences read the interview.
Step Seven – In order to follow my magazines form and style I will add my magazine logo to the bottom
of each page by importing the logo image file. I will also add a page number using text boxes.
Conclusion
L03 was all about the creation of my magazine. I demonstrated
my final ideas for my magazine in hand drawn drafts and graphic
layouts before I started to create a final magazine. I then moved
on to display my production plan again to demonstrate I was on
time with production. I then analysed the equipment and
location for my photo-shoot. The final images I took were
displayed on my test photography slide. I then began to make my
front cover as I had all the images I needed. In order to display
this I created a step by step that demonstrated how I made my
front cover and double page spread of my magazine
Deadlines
I have chosen to release my magazine on the 2nd January
2017. This is because it is the start of a new week in the
new year. I have also chosen to release my magazine on
this day as there are no other calendar events schedule,
such as public holidays, that may reduce the amount of
consumers of my magazine.

Safe Working Practices
Safe working practices are methods that tell people
how to perform a task with minimum risk to people,
equipment, materials, environment and processes.
One safe working practice I used in the creation of
my magazine was to hold the shift button down
when resizing images for my magazine front cover
and double page spread. This keeps the images from
getting stretched and pixelated. This has given my
magazine a professional finish.
Proof Reading and Sub-
Editing
After creating my magazine
front cover and double
page spread I had to proof
read it. This is in order to
keep professionalism levels
high and keep audiences
reading my magazine. In
order to proof read my
work I copied the text from
my front cover and double
page spread into a
Microsoft Word document
and changed the incorrect
spellings and punctuation. I
then copied the text back
over to my front cover and
double page. The text was
then checked by
professionals to make sure
it is acceptable for sale
Colour
When I began to make my magazine front cover I used my
magazine of inspiration, hand drawn drafts and graphic
layouts as inspiration. I used the paint brush tool with an
opacity of 50% and made the brush soft. I then increased the
size of the brush so the spread of the colour will be greater. I
chose a soft brush in order to make the colours blend
together well. In order to make the background look as much
like my inspiration magazine as possible I used the eye drop
tool on my magazine of inspiration background.

In order to find an
appropriate font for
my magazine front

of fonts that can be

downloaded
Witness Statements
The following images demonstrate
my witness statements written by
the assessors of my magazine pitch.
They state that a good thing in my
pitch was that I presented well which
evidenced my preparation. They also
state that my pitch may have been
better if I had displayed my double
page spread better, it stated
flattening the image
Changes
Before After
The following two images
display the differences in
my front cover after
changing it based on
consumer feedback. When
changing the front cover I
reduced the size of my
strapline “Make Music
Happen” in order to make
sure it fits inside my
masthead. I have made this
improvement as it know
makes it easier for the
consumer to read the
headlines on the front cover
of the magazine
Changes (Continued)
The following images demonstrate the changes I have made to my double page spread based on the
feedback I received on my witness statement. The audiences opinion was I should add the web address of
my magazines website to the bottom of each page of my magazine, I also made my pull quote larger to
draw more attention to the quote. Finally I added credits to the photographer and writer of the article
Before
After
Conclusion
The final LO of this project was about pitching my magazine
to professionals and adjusting my magazine based on the
reviews I received. The first stage of LO4 was to analyze my
deadline (release day) of my magazine. I chose January 2nd
2017 as my release day as there are no other calendar
events schedule, such as public holidays, that may reduce
the amount of consumers of my magazine. I next
demonstrated my step by steps as this demonstrates to the
audience how my magazine was created following safe work
practices. The next slide had me analyze a safe work practice
I used when creating my magazine. I then moved on to
demonstrate how my magazine had been proof read so
guaranteed there would be no mistakes. This is important as
it will help with sales the more professional my final product
is. Finally I show the choice of colour and font my magazine.
After displaying this professionals gave me feedback on my
magazine using witness statements. The witness statements
helped me make changes to my magazine which I analyzed
at the end of of the learning objective.

  • 5. Mood Board Conclusion This image demonstrates the album cover for JME’s album “Integrity” I have used this image in my mood board as the artist JME is known for the grime industry. This is the kind of music I will include inside my magazine. This image demonstrates the artist Skepta, I have selected this image because not only is Skepta an artist who produces music that relates to the genre of grime. But he also is a fashion icon in the grime industry. I will be including fashion in my magazine due to the results of a survey I created on the website SurveyMonkey (https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk) when asking the question “What other information would you like to see included in a magazine” the highest receive answer was “Fashion” with a 65% answer rate.
  • 6. House Style MMH Genre –Grime music will be the main genre but the magazine will also touch on rap and hip hop. The magazine will feature artists such as Skepta, JME and Stormzy Colours – Pink, White, Black and Red Price - £3.99 - compete with XXL which costs £4.91 Size – A4
  • 7. Inspiration Magazine : MMH I have chosen this magazine because as my second magazine of inspiration because I believe it will be easy to recreate. The simplicity behind the magazine is also effective because it captures an audiences eye better as there is less to look at which may distract the audience. This magazine also makes it clear who is the topic in the magazine as the title “TRAVIS SCOTT Rage Against The Machine” is clearly visible to people passing by. This means whilst on the shelves in the shops if a Travis Scott fan sees the magazine they are likely to buy it. If it wasn’t clear who the magazine was based on it may reduce sales. The pink background may connote that the magazine is not just targeted at a male audience, as stereotypically the hip hop/rap genre targets a young black male, it may also be targeted a the females interested in Travis Scott. I believe I should recreate this because it will attract more people to my magazine. In this issue I will also recreate how XXL use a red box for the logo because it makes it stand out.
  • 8. What will I ‘repeat’ Steve Neale (1980) The things I will repeat to make my first magazine, MMH, look effective are the cover lines, the small paragraph that explains what is inside the magazine, the barcode, the font used for the magazine headline, an image of the artist inside my magazine and finally the colours of the magazine (pink)

  • 10. Interview Draft Plan When planning for what I could include in my double page spread I had to think of something that will bring readers to my magazine to increase sales. In order to do this I chose to use the technique of “star appeal” and include and interview with an artist inside the magazine. “Star Appeal” is a theory from Richard Dyer that states that people are drawn to magazines that include information about celebrities as they want to climb up social ranks. The layout I intend to have for my interview is my question followed by the artists answer underneath. On my double page spread I will include a headline in a large font to draw readers to my interview, an image of my artist that will take up the whole left hand page, a drop capital to make the start of my interview visible, a stand first in order to explain what the interview Is about, a pull quote to draw readers into the interview and finally I will keep my form and style and involve a page number and logo at the bottom of the interview page
  • 11. Magazine Interview Draft Morning OMEGA, How are you? I’m fine thanks, what about you? I’m pretty good thanks for asking, How did the last concert from your “Local Invasion” go last night? It was lit! Loads of crazy people We heard! Girls jumping up on stage trying to share the love with you Yeah…That’s how I like it Anyway, down to business. The new EP “Local Invasion” straight to number one, how does that make you feel? The support of the fans has been amazing, to get to number one in the first week is crazy. There are so many other albums that could of done it. Speaking of other albums, you knocked Dave of the number one spot and we’ve heard there's been some beef on twitter Some artists are all about themselves, never give respect to new comers in the music business…if I didn't deserve number one Skepta would never of took me on his tour to be his support act. We here at MMH believe you deserve that number one spot! Thank you Now, more questions, is there any period in your life that has been inspiring on your music? So many moments. That’s what the albums about, my life! All the hurt and pain, all the happy and good times and especially the times with friends. But the track “My Time” is one of the ones that really tell the story about some of my favorite times, I guess you guys will have to give it a listen to find out more. Interesting that you mentioned “My time” because a little bird has told us that It is your favorite song on the new EP. Would you like to quote on that? It is my favorite track by a long way, you’re right, without reveling to much its just the memories it brings back, the lyrics speak to me and I just hope the people are out there now enjoying it just as much as I enjoyed making it Finally, we want to know what persuaded you to join BBK? It wasn’t about what persuaded me, its about what persuaded them Expand on that, reveal it to us, what are your true feelings behind being a member? Excitement mainly, its an unreal feeling to be working with the people that gave me so much inspiration for my music. I remember featuring on JME’s track way back and thinking nothing of it, but when I got that text telling me to join BBK and release an EP I was running round naked cause I was so happy I had the guys from BBK support Were happy to hear that everything worked out well for you, you deserve it, thank you for speaking to us today! Thank you, I enjoyed it We enjoyed to, carry on making that great quality music and we at MMH will be sure to come for a second interview That sounds great
  • 13. Photo Shoot Plan (Continued)
  • 14. Test Photography The following images display the pictures I took for my magazine. I chose two candidates that could link to the hip-hop/grime genre of my magazine. I chose my second candidate, OMEGA, as I believed that the images I took were a better quality and would fit my magazine better. I chose a selection of different poses for my candidate as I wanted to have different images for my front cover and double page spread. I also chose different backgrounds to make the images more interesting. After taking my images I analysed them and decided that I will use the image titled “DSC_0047” for my front cover and the image titled “DSC_0217” for my double page spread. I will use Photoshop to edit these images to make them more professional.
  • 15. Prop List Prop Check ? Cap Tracksuit Hoodie Jeans DSLR Camera Tripod Lighting I have created a prop list to help me plan for the photo-shoot of my chosen artist for my magazine, OMEGA. These props are important as without these I will not be able to produce a professional piece of work. I will use the cap, tracksuit hoodie and jeans as the clothing for my artist on the front of the magazine. I will use the DSLR camera, tripod and lighting to take professional images that will stand out on the the front of my magazine.
  • 16. Photography Location & Equipment The following images display the equipment I will use for my photos and the locations I will use for my images. The equipment images consist of a Nikon D3100 and a tripod. I used the Nikon camera to take high quality images for my front cover and double page spread. I used the tripod to keep the camera steady when taking the pictures making them an even better quality. The location images consist of the media corridor at St Andrews Catholic School, Leatherhead and outside of St Andrews Catholic School. I used two locations in my images in order to get a different styles of images. The location inside the media corridor was well lit by the indoor lighting so I did not need extra lighting. The location in the corridor was also good as the white background made the candidate stand out allowing me to conduct Photoshop work more easily. The location outside was also naturally lit but upon editing the images it was harder to make the candidate stand out against the wall. I used the images I took in the media coridoor for my front page of my magazine and have used the images I took outside St Andrews Catholic School for my double page spread.
  • 17. Risk Assessment The following two images display my photography consent forms. This displays how I got consent from the people I have taken images of to use on my front cover and inside the magazine. The form included an area for the model in my images to sign there full name, date of birth, address and contact details. The form also gives the location of the shoot and proof of permission.

  • 26. Conclusion In LO1 I have looked at planning for the creation of my magazine MMH. I created a mind map with my magazine ideas on. This is so all my ideas were in one place and I could start putting my magazine together. I next created a mood board which contained images of artists that would feature in my magazine. I chose these images as they fitted in with the genre of my magazine, Hip Hop/Grime. My next slide looked at the house styles for my magazine. This slide is where I decided the genre, size, price and colours of my magazine. My final ideas was to have a magazine that features the Hip Hop/ Grime genre. The magazine would be A4 size and be priced at £3.99. Finally the colours would be pink, black and white. The next slide told audiences what my magazine of inspiration was, the slide after than demonstrated what features from the magazine I would repeat. The next slide in my presentation displayed my final magazine font. I then planned and wrote an interview for my magazine. This would be my double page spread. In order to make my magazine more interesting I needed to include images, I planned a photo-shoot and did some test photography which was displayed in my presentation. I had to use the correct props and location for my photo-shoot, I analysed these in my presentation. I next came up with a production plan for creating my magazine so that I would have it ready for release on 2nd January 2017. The final stage of LO1 was to create rough layouts of my magazine so I drew some drafts and also created graphic layouts of what my magazine should look like.

  • 30. Legal and Ethical Issues When creating my magazine there are rules to which I and my magazine must follow. This is so there will be a lack of complaints to deal with when the magazine is released. This means that no harm or offence will be experienced from any of the magazines consumers. One of the main rules when creating magazines “Particular care must be taken to avoid causing offence on the grounds of race, religion, gender, sexuality, disability or age” One ethnicity issue my magazine may face is the heavy involvement of more black ethnicity artist than white ethnicity.
  • 31. Copyright © Copyright is the procedure where somebody obtains a legal right to any kind of item. This then protects the item from being copied by a third party assessors. Copyright can be used to protect many items such as magazines, music and images. For Example, Q magazine have copyright on all of the magazines they produce. Evidence of this can be seen on Q’s magazines website. The footer of the website states “©Bauer Consumer Media. All Rights Reserved“ This means that Bauer, Q magazines publisher, have set laws to protect their products. Looking at the statement “All Rights Reserved” this means nothing that Bauer media create can be copyrighted as it is all of their content. I will need to obtain copyright on my magazine in order to make sure all my products are safe from being stolen from any other people or companies. http://www.qthemusic.com
  • 32. Watermark I added the watermark to the front cover of my magazine in order to protect the image. This watermark protects the image as upon trying to edit the image the watermark would make this impossible. I needed to watermark this image because of copyright. Watermarking this image also means I am following the data protection act 1998 by keeping the image protected as stated in my photography consent form
  • 33. Data Protection Act 1988 The data protection act controls how personal information is used by organizations, businesses or the government. • Used fairly and lawfully • Used for limited, specifically stated purposes • Used in a way that is adequate, relevant and not excessive • Accurate • Kept for no longer than is absolutely necessary • Handled according to people’s data protection rights • Kept safe and secure Not transferred outside the There is stronger legal protection for more sensitive information, such as: • Ethnic background • Political opinions • Religious beliefs • Health • Sexual health • Criminal records https://www.gov.uk/data-protection/the-data-protection-act
  • 34. Editors Code of Practice The editors code of practice are a set of rules by IPSO that all magazines and newspapers have to follow when creating their products. The latest editors code of practice came into effect on 1st January 2016. There are 16 segments to the rules, these include… •Accuracy •Privacy •Harassment •Intrusion into grief or shock •Reporting suicide •Children •Children in sex cases •Hospitals •Reporting of crime •Clandestine devices and subterfuge •Victims of sexual assault •Discrimination •Financial journalism •Confidential sources •Witness payments in criminal trials •Payment to criminals
  • 35. Complaints I will need to include a complaints procedure to my magazine. This is so that anybody who wishes to make a complaint can make one. I have investigated how The Sun newspaper deals with their complaints. The procedure is extremely simple and I will intend to follow it in order to allow my magazine readers to make complaints. The Sun newspaper have an extremely simple complaints system which can be found on The Suns website. If a reader of The Sun is offended by something they see or read in the newspaper they can email ombudsman@the-sun.co.uk . The other way to complain if you feel it is necessary is to post a letter to the address The Ombudsan The Sun 1 London Bridge Street London SE1 9GF The Sun aim to reply to all complaints within a 5 day period https://www.thesun.co.uk /editorial-complaints/
  • 36. Complaints Case Study – Waitrose Taste Of Israel Magazine A magazine that has recently had a large amount of complaints was Waitrose food magazine titled the “Taste Of Israel” The Taste of Israel magazine was created by the state's tourist board and was featured inside the February issue of the monthly Waitrose Kitchen Magazine. The magazine included information about the history of food in Israel, common ingredients and dishes, a feature on market tours, as well as recipes for dishes such as shakshuka, falafel and humus. Campaigners have found fault with the magazine, and complained that it not only appropriates Palestinian culture, but also ignores what they regard to be an illegal occupation and an “apartheid regime”. Some customers have expressed their anger over the insert on Twitter and pledged to boycott the supermarket. Waitrose have chosen to defend the magazine and the case is on going http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/food-and- drink/news/waitrose-magazine-defends-taste-of- israel-pamphlet-against-complaints-it-ignores-the- illegal-10113539.html
  • 37. Complaints Case Study – That’s Life! Magazine That’s Life! Magazine is a weekly magazine that reports real life. The magazine has been produced by Bauer Media since 1995. The magazine has circulation figures of around 275,000 per week. The magazine came under scrutiny in April 2013 for breaking Clause 16 of the Editors Code of Practice. Treena McIntyre complained to the PCC over a story about the murder of her brother Steven McIntyre by his stepson Christopher Hodgson. The magazine argued that Ms Hodgson was a “victim” of the crime and that it did not seek to glorify or glamorise the murder. Clause 16 of the Editors’ Code states that “Payment or offers of payment for stories, pictures or information, which seek to exploit a particular crime or to glorify or glamorise crime in general, must not be made directly or via agents to convicted or confessed criminals or to their associates – who may include family, friends and colleagues.” More complaints have been made about the issue of the magazine. For example, complaints came about the article as some people believed it was an “intrusion intro grief or shock” this then means that the article would also be breaking Clause 5 of The Editors Code of Practice.
  • 38. Conclusion In LO2 I created a location recce to help with my photo- shoot. The location recce analysed the location, time and date of the shoot, the picture required for my magazine, the permission I needed for the images and a hazards report of the area of the shoot. Once this information was gathered I could keep track of the photo shoot and keep everybody safe. To make the shoot even more efficient I created a photography plan which worked in the same way as the location recce. I next moved on to all the legal issues of creating a magazine. I looked at copyright, watermarks, the data protection act of 1988, the editors code of practice and how people may make complaints to my magazine. I next looked at two case studies of magazines that had complaints for breaking legal issues.

I used the images I took in the media corridor for my front page of my magazine and have used the images I took outside St Andrews Catholic School for my double page spread.

  • 46. Step By Step – Front Cover Step One: When I began to make my magazine front cover I used my magazine of inspiration, hand drawn drafts and graphic layouts as inspiration. I used the paint brush tool with an opacity of 50% and made the brush soft. I then increased the size of the brush so the spread of the colour will be greater. I chose a soft brush in order to make the colours blend together well. In order to make the background look as much like my inspiration magazine as possible I used the eye drop tool on my magazine of inspiration background. Step Two: After creating the background I added my main image to my front cover. I used the quick selection tool to remove the background of the image. In order to make the image stand out against the background I added a stroke and a drop shadow to the image. I then added the logo of my magazine on a layer behind my main image. To create my logo I used the shape tool to create a red rectangular box for the text “MMH” to go inside. To add the text I used the text tool and used the “Calibri (Body)” font to create a bold designed font. In order to make my logo stand out I added a drop shadow effect to the red rectangle outlining the “MMH” title The fourth step to creating my front cover was to add my strapline “Make Music Happen” underneath the logo of my magazine. In order to add this I used the text tool and typed the the strapline underneath my logo in the same font I used in the logo of my magazine “Calibri (Body)”. I also placed this behind my main image.
  • 47. Step By Step – Front Cover (Continued) The fifth step in creating my magazine front cover was to add a barcode to my front cover. I did this by inserting a rectangle shape in white with the shape tool and placing the image of a barcode on top of this shape. I then added the price, £3.99, the social media account, @MMH_MAG (For Twitter and Instagram) and finally the social media logos. Next I added the puff promotion to the front of my magazine, 1 year free of Spotify, which would be available to win inside the magazine. I inserted the Spotify logo and curved the text “WIN WIN WIN” around it. The next step of creating my front cover was to use a text box to create my main headline of my magazine. I used the text tool and typed my heading “OMEGA LOCAL INVASION EP” in order to make this stand out I added a stroke in the colour black behind the text. I used the window character and reduced the size of the gaps between the text. Finally I tilted the text at an angle in order to make it more interesting for the audience to view The second to last step of creating my front cover was to add the left hand side cover lines. In order to do this I used the text tool and typed in the cover line. To make it interesting to the reader I changed the colour of the font from white to black halfway through the cover line. In order to keep my front cover consistent I used the “Calibri (Body)” font again and made it bold. In order to finish my magazine front cover I created the right hand side cover lines. Once again I used the “Calibri (Body)’ font to keep consistency and used the white and black text colours in order to keep my magazine interesting. I also used the the shape tool to create the red line which break up my cover lines. I added a plus sign that was an intricate design to keep my magazine interesting.
  • 48. Step By Step – Double Page Spread In order to create my double page spread I will use the Adobe software InDesign. Step One – Open InDesign and created a double page by adding another A4 page to the original single page. Set up the page by splitting the right hand side page into two. Add text boxes to half the page for interview to go into and left the other half empty to add interview headline and stand first. The page on the left hand side was left blank for me to add my main image to. Step Two – The second step will be to import my image of my artist into the magazine interview. I will do this by going to the Insert tab and clicking picture. I will then select the image created with the pink background, to fit my magazine house style, and place it in the middle of the page. Step Three - The next stage of creating my magazine double page will be to add the magazine headline and stand first. My headline is simply the artists name and my stand first is “Local Invasion EP”. As I already have this text as an image file, because the the headline was on my magazine front cover, I will import it as an image to the InDesign document.
  • 49. Step By Step – Double Page Spread (Continued) Step Four – Step four required me to import my magazine interview to the text boxes created. I will do this by copying my interview draft text from the word document by pressing “CTRL + C” and pasting it into the text boxes created by pressing “CTRL + V”. I will change the questions to pink and the answers to black. I will have dead space between the magazine interview and headline so intend to add the artists logo and social media to the area of the stand first. Step Five – Step five will be simple and short. In order to make my magazine look professional I will include a drop capital. I will do this by increasing the size of the first letter in my magazine interview Step Six – Once again step six is a simple step. I will use a quote from the magazines interview and increase the size of it to use a pull quote to try to make audiences read the interview. Step Seven – In order to follow my magazines form and style I will add my magazine logo to the bottom of each page by importing the logo image file. I will also add a page number using text boxes.
  • 50. Conclusion L03 was all about the creation of my magazine. I demonstrated my final ideas for my magazine in hand drawn drafts and graphic layouts before I started to create a final magazine. I then moved on to display my production plan again to demonstrate I was on time with production. I then analysed the equipment and location for my photo-shoot. The final images I took were displayed on my test photography slide. I then began to make my front cover as I had all the images I needed. In order to display this I created a step by step that demonstrated how I made my front cover and double page spread of my magazine

  • 52. Deadlines I have chosen to release my magazine on the 2nd January 2017. This is because it is the start of a new week in the new year. I have also chosen to release my magazine on this day as there are no other calendar events schedule, such as public holidays, that may reduce the amount of consumers of my magazine. Week Beginning – 02/01/17 Magazine Launch
  • 53. Post Production Skills Step One: When I began to make my magazine front cover I used my magazine of inspiration, hand drawn drafts and graphic layouts as inspiration.

  • 57. Safe Working Practices Safe working practices are methods that tell people how to perform a task with minimum risk to people, equipment, materials, environment and processes. One safe working practice I used in the creation of my magazine was to hold the shift button down when resizing images for my magazine front cover and double page spread. This keeps the images from getting stretched and pixelated. This has given my magazine a professional finish.
  • 58. Proof Reading and Sub- Editing After creating my magazine front cover and double page spread I had to proof read it. This is in order to keep professionalism levels high and keep audiences reading my magazine. In order to proof read my work I copied the text from my front cover and double page spread into a Microsoft Word document and changed the incorrect spellings and punctuation. I then copied the text back over to my front cover and double page. The text was then checked by professionals to make sure it is acceptable for sale

  • 61. Witness Statements The following images demonstrate my witness statements written by the assessors of my magazine pitch. They state that a good thing in my pitch was that I presented well which evidenced my preparation. They also state that my pitch may have been better if I had displayed my double page spread better, it stated flattening the image
  • 62. Changes Before After The following two images display the differences in my front cover after changing it based on consumer feedback. When changing the front cover I reduced the size of my strapline “Make Music Happen” in order to make sure it fits inside my masthead. I have made this improvement as it know makes it easier for the consumer to read the headlines on the front cover of the magazine
  • 63. Changes (Continued) The following images demonstrate the changes I have made to my double page spread based on the feedback I received on my witness statement. The audiences opinion was I should add the web address of my magazines website to the bottom of each page of my magazine, I also made my pull quote larger to draw more attention to the quote. Finally I added credits to the photographer and writer of the article Before After
  • 64. Conclusion The final LO of this project was about pitching my magazine to professionals and adjusting my magazine based on the reviews I received. The first stage of LO4 was to analyze my deadline (release day) of my magazine. I chose January 2nd 2017 as my release day as there are no other calendar events schedule, such as public holidays, that may reduce the amount of consumers of my magazine. I next demonstrated my step by steps as this demonstrates to the audience how my magazine was created following safe work practices. The next slide had me analyze a safe work practice I used when creating my magazine. I then moved on to demonstrate how my magazine had been proof read so guaranteed there would be no mistakes. This is important as it will help with sales the more professional my final product is. Finally I show the choice of colour and font my magazine. After displaying this professionals gave me feedback on my magazine using witness statements. The witness statements helped me make changes to my magazine which I analyzed at the end of of the learning objective.
