• Objective (i) identify drought tolerant lines from DAB
  and CBIB lines
• -three sets of trials
• i) 6 x 6 lattice (DAB lines) for yield and other agronomic
  characters across two locations. Replicated trial and
  subjected to terminal drought.
• ii) 183 DAB lines for drought tolerance at 1 location.
  Single row trials, with 2 replicates
• Iii) 80 CBIB lines for drought tolerance at two locations.
  Replicated trial, four rows, 3 replicates
• Testing locations (Harare Research Station, Gwebi VTC).
Tablet

We are in the 1st year of using the tablet
Advantages already seen;
-eliminates the process of transcribing data from
   hard copies into machine
-its difficult to read some peoples’ handwriting
   and the tablet eliminates this
-you can communicate (phone and internet)
   whilst in the field
IB fieldbook
•   Fieldbook has been in use for the last 10 years at our institute.
•   Primary users were the maize breeding team (after adapting fieldbook from
    CIMMYT)
•   Local training (within Crop Breeding Institute) involving 8 research officers to
    demonstrate features in IB fieldbook and its potential use was done on 20 March
    2012.
•   All the officers showed interest of using the IB fieldbook in the 2012/13 cropping
    season
•   The field book is a useful tool
•   - no errors as in manual or excel randomization
•   - print field labels and fieldbook hard copies
•   -compatible with the Tablet
•   - good tool for data storage
•   - faster than old ways of making fieldbooks
•   However, the is no software for data analysis (compared to the old field book from
    CIMMYT).

TLI 2012: Data management for bean breeding - Zimbabwe

  • 1. TL1-Zimbabwe • Objective (i) identify drought tolerant lines from DAB and CBIB lines • -three sets of trials • i) 6 x 6 lattice (DAB lines) for yield and other agronomic characters across two locations. Replicated trial and subjected to terminal drought. • ii) 183 DAB lines for drought tolerance at 1 location. Single row trials, with 2 replicates • Iii) 80 CBIB lines for drought tolerance at two locations. Replicated trial, four rows, 3 replicates • Testing locations (Harare Research Station, Gwebi VTC).
  • 2. Tablet We are in the 1st year of using the tablet Advantages already seen; -eliminates the process of transcribing data from hard copies into machine -its difficult to read some peoples’ handwriting and the tablet eliminates this -you can communicate (phone and internet) whilst in the field
  • 3. IB fieldbook • Fieldbook has been in use for the last 10 years at our institute. • Primary users were the maize breeding team (after adapting fieldbook from CIMMYT) • Local training (within Crop Breeding Institute) involving 8 research officers to demonstrate features in IB fieldbook and its potential use was done on 20 March 2012. • All the officers showed interest of using the IB fieldbook in the 2012/13 cropping season • The field book is a useful tool • - no errors as in manual or excel randomization • - print field labels and fieldbook hard copies • -compatible with the Tablet • - good tool for data storage • - faster than old ways of making fieldbooks • However, the is no software for data analysis (compared to the old field book from CIMMYT).
