Thread Terminology
☺WHAT IS THREAD ? ? ?
 The continuous helical groove on a screw or
on the inner surface of a nut.
Uses of threads:
AS TEMPORARY
FASENTER
FOR POWER
TRANSMISSIOM
 THREAD TERMS:
☺MAJOR DIAMETER
☺PITCH DIAMETER
☺MINOR DIAMETER
☺ANGLE OF THREAD
☺DEPTH OF THREAD
☺ROOT ☺ LEAD
☺CREST ☺ FLANK
☺PITCH
 It is the largest diameter of an internal or
external screw thread. It is also known as
outside or nominal diameter.
 It is the smallest diameter of an internal or
external screw thread. It is also known as core or
root diameter.
 Angle of adjacent flanks measured at the
cross-section of the screw thread- included
the axis of the screw thread.
 The height between the root and the crest
vertically to the thread axis.
 The bottom surface joining the two adjacent
flanks.
 The top surface joining the two flanks of a
thread is called crest.
 It is the distance from a point on one thread
to the corresponding point on the next point.
This distance to be measured parallel to the
axis of the thread.
 Thread face(excluding the root and crest).
9. LEAD
 The distance covered by the nut in a
single revolution on bolt parallel to the
axis is called “LEAD”
