As part of the teaching team instructing a first year course in American History, there is a lot to
cover in a semester. My part of the module consists of educating the students about slavery in
nineteenth century America. Solomon Northup s memoir, 12 Years A Slave will be part of the
curriculum, since it is an authentic piece of history in American slavery. However, as the instructor,
I need to decide what educational medium to use. I have the choice of the book/memoir itself or
the academy award winning film. Both mediums have their advantages and disadvantages as a
teaching aid.
After some consideration, I will be using the film as the education medium for the course. While
the book is a fountain of information, I believe the film will be more beneficial for a first year
history course. This film will truly engage the students and give them a better understanding of the
unfortunate events of historical slavery. Though, the film is not the primary evidence of slavery, it
does portray authenticity. As long as the film does not forfeit its historical accuracies for
entertainment value, then it should be used as an educational tool. However, loss of accurate
historical information is not an issue since this Hollywood film manages to accurately depict history.

has been written about for millennia. Homer composed an epic poem entirely about him. Dante
wrote about Odysseus while describing his journey through the afterlife in Inferno. These two
writers, though describing the same man, portray him in different lights Homer lauding him as a
valiant hero and Dante condemning him to burn for eternity. Each portrayal is a product of the

Whereas Homer s Odysseus receives a seat of honor at the table of a foreign king, Dante s spends
eternity burning in cramped quarters.
In each portrayal of Odysseus, the two differ not only in how he is viewed, but what the reader
gets to view about him. Curiously absent from the Odyssey is the account of how the Trojan War
really ends. Homer had already dedicated one epic to the War, and then tells the return from it in
this epic, but does not give the reader the closure of explaining how it ended. An obvious reason
is how the deed of capturing the city with the Trojan Horse was less than heroic. Homer valued

I have conducted some research that pertains to facilities management in healthcare. The majority
of the research was conducted locally within the state of Colorado. This research gave some insight
into different variations of volunteering and internship opportunities as well as professional
certifications.

In Colorado I was unable to find internships that related directly to facilities management. I was
however able to find a few programs from local hospitals that offer internships in facility
maintenance that offer to pay for two years of community college during the internship. At the end
of the internship the hospital will offer to hire candidates, which is a great start on the path to
becoming a facility manager. The second internship I found was at the Children hospital in Denver.

Establishing Unity Roundtable With An Updated Version Of...
We started our semester with the main goal of establishing UNITY Roundtable with an updated
version of constitutions and bylaws. After a couple of weeks of receiving feedback from the
UNITY Roundtable reps we settled and voted on the latest version of them. After that was
completed, Deshauna and I with the help of the reps we worked to recruit a SFAC Liaison and
after several weeks we elected Vincent Wan. He will oversee the allocation of next year budgets
and make sure the process and decisions is equitable and inclusive of multicultural organizations.
Through the semester, we came up with different long term goals such as creating a proposal for
the renovation of the three multicultural houses. To complete the research and plan we formed a
workgroup that will be chaired by Senator Carter. This working group is formed by three UNITY
Roundtable members and three Student Senators. They will research best practices from other
institutions and create a proposal that UNITY will vote on and present to the board of Trustees
during their spring gathering.
This semester was hard for students from marginalized communities, hence, most of UNITY s
organizations. Starting with the hate crime targeting two Latina students on campus. We reacted to
this by organizing a meeting for student to color. During this meeting we address the hate crime,
self care, and action steps. We invited Scott Law, Tony Tyler, and Provost Sue Madison to speak
