Cultural Imperialism In America
America has always been imperialistic. The existence of an imperialist America is a fact that cannot be
denied. During the war between America and Spain, America illustrated its imperialistic views when it
prompted the government to establish a plan to merge the remaining overseas territories: the
Philippines, Puerto Rico, and Guam. Also, America has been in the process of converting their
domestic industries into a global empire, which has the potential to capture the world market, acquire
natural resources from foreign sources, and sell its surplus industrial agriculture. Overall, America is
imperialist and both historical and current events illustrate how America upholds imperialism, which
comes several forms including military, economic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
First of all, English, America s most widely spoken language, has become the world s lingua franca,
partially due to British imperialism but also because of American cultural imperialism. It is an
international language. In many countries such as Philippines, they believe that English is superior and
will provide more opportunities than their mother language. The Philippines uses English in
government, business, education, etc. rather than Tagalog. It, along with countless other countries, has
the mentality that if its people do not learn English, they will fall behind in global development.
Travelers come everywhere over the world also use English as their communication. Also, America s
pop culture has achieved extreme popularity; almost all of the food or drinks that people eat everyday
comes from America, for example, Starbucks, McDonald s, Coca Cola, and more. Starbucks has
spread all over the world and according to their website, there are more than 21,000 stores in 65
countries worldwide ( Starbucks Coffee International ). In addition, American clothing brands and pop
music are more prevalent than ever. With that being said, American cultural imperialism is trying to
spread America s ideals worldwide through pop culture and subtly push other countries to assimilate

My Experience At The Gym
When I started searching for a place to volunteer, I had a tough time finding the correct place, because
most places required for me to fill out an application to do a background check. I understand is a
process, but it was going to take too much time, and I wanted to start as soon as possible because of
time matter. However, that was not the only problem. The main issue was my work schedule because I
work two jobs, and I only have free time part of the weekends, which made my situation much more
complicated. The places I called needed the most help on week days. After calling several places and
visiting some of the locations, I decided to try another day and went to work. While I was at work, I
was having a conversation with one of the young lady s that exercises there at the gym, I was telling
her about my service learning, and that I had been looking all day but could not yet find one that
would work with my schedule. As I was telling her this, someone overheard the conversation and
said... I work at the food bank you can come and volunteer with us Her name is Nicole Anderson, and
she offered to help me get everything set up for me to volunteer with the community food bank.
Nicole said that they always needed volunteers there, and all I had to do, was to talk to the volunteer
coordinator Adam Baker. I did as she told me to do and tried calling the coordinator the next day but
unfortunately, I couldn t talk to him, because he was out of town. I drove to the location after

Settlement Privilege In Canada
Settlement privilege is a legal tool designed to safeguard information exchanged between a plaintiff
and a defendant or defendants during settlement negotiations. This tool permits any involved parties to
freely discuss trial matters without the worry of their discussions later being held against them.
Settlement privilege laws were set by the courts to assist in their efforts to promote settlements out of
court, which in turn, decreases legal costs, along with public resources. The following guidelines
determine settlement privilege, as is found in Canada s Law of Evidence: A continuing dispute must
be currently under contemplation or in progress. There must be a clear understanding that all matters
discussed during settlement negotiations

Toni Morrison Essay On Women
While Toni Morrison s male characters are often underdeveloped, Jacob, Frank, and Booker all
attempt to gain their own agency through female characters. Though he desires wealth, Jacob relies on
female characters to accomplish his goals. Frank s journey home is driven by his desire to save Cee.
Booker spends the majority of the novel controlled by Adam, but is finally able to let go after Queen
points out his influence. While there is a degree of independence, Jacob, Frank, and Booker all need a
female character to obtain autonomy.
To begin with, Jacob s goal in life is to become wealthy, much like the D Ortagas. Due to his poor
ability at managing a farm, however, he is forced to rely on women in his life. Lina recounts how she
had to teach him how to fish and how his crops died when he ignored her advice: He ignored her
warning of using alewives as fertilizer only to see his plots of tender vegetables torn up by foragers
attracted by the smell (A Mercy 58). When he begins to travel, he abandons the farm entirely and
leaves it in the care of Rebekka and Lina while he is away. He certainly has the desire to pursue his
own goals but can only do so by leaning on women. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He spends the novel going through a reverse migration with his only goal being to make it to his sister
before she dies. He even muses on the possibility that he survived the Korean War for the sole purpose
of rescuing her: Maybe his life had been preserved for Cee, which was only fair since she had been his
original caring for, a selflessness without gain or emotional profit (Home 34 35). Later in the novel, he
decides that he wants to give the man he saw murdered as a child a proper burial. But even then, he
demands on burying him in a quilt that Cee made. Any kind of agency Frank expresses is based

Roy Adaptation Model
Nursing Theorist: Roy Adaptation Model Jeanette Ratliff, RN Chamberlain College of Nursing Course
Number: Summer 2011 Nursing Theorist: Roy Adaptation Model Sister Callista Roy was not only a
pioneer in the field of nursing, but also a leader. Her dedication to the health community is inarguable.
As serving numerous roles as leader, her thoughts and visions touched many. One example of her
mark in nursing is the Roy Adaptation Model. It is in this model that health is defined as a state of
adaptation that occurs as a result of successfully adapting to stressors. It is a positive response to an
environmental change as well as coping successfully with stressors and environmental changes. Roy
defines the environment in terms of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There is a zone which shows the correlation between adaptive response and the range of stimulation.
When stimuli fall outside the zone, Roy points out that the individual is without effective coping
skills. Therefore the individual is unable to respond positively. Coping mechanisms consist of
regulator and cognator subsystems. The regulator subsystem is made up of automatic neural endocrine
and chemical activity. The cognator subsystem consists of cognitive and emotive pathways. These
pathways involve information processing, learning, judgment, and emotions (George, 2002). In the
final component of her model Roy address the goal of nursing is to promote adaptation in each of the
four modes. By doing so, promotes a person s health, quality of life, and dying and dignity. The four
models according to Andrews and Roy, (1991) are physiological, self concept, role function and
interdependence. Roy s model includes six steps in order to carry out the nursing process. These steps
are assessment of behavior, assessment of stimuli, nursing diagnosis, goal setting, interventions, and
evaluation. To assess behavior, it is stressed that behavior is observed and compared to norms and
considered either adaptive or ineffective. The assessment of stimuli involves classifying the stimuli
into one of the three stimuli categories, focal, contextual, and residual, and assessing how the affects

The Impact Of Changing The Course Of A River At Elizabeth...
WHAT IS THE IMPACT OF CHANGING THE COURSE OF A RIVER AT ELIZABETH QUAY?
Introduction Elizabeth Quay is located between barrack and Williams street and will cover 10 hectares
of prime riverfront land. The inlet will be 2.7 hectares large. It is connected directly to, and extends an
important north south city corridor that will make room for the main commercial, retail, transport,
cultural, entertainment and education areas of the city. Elizabeth quay is located next to major tour
destinations and public transport hubs including Supreme Court Gardens, Barrack Square and the
Convention Exhibition Centre. The project will reconnect the city with the Swan river; it will integrate

There will be 400 new hotel rooms built in Elizabeth Quay which is necessary to accommodate the
tourists that are expected to visit. Negative impact 1: Since the project was announced, there have
been many different opinions about whether or not Elizabeth Quay is a good idea. In July of 2012, it
was found that 41% of the population of Perth was for Elizabeth Quay, while 36% did not think it was
a good idea. Interestingly, it was found that liberal and green supporters were more in favour of the
project than labor supporters. Many of those not in favour of the project believe that it does little for
Australian heritage and that it isn t worth the disruption of traffic that would be caused by the closing
of Riverside drive during the building period. It is also thought that many people in Perth are in fear of
change; that they want it to stay the same sleepy town that it had been in the past. But in opposition to
this, supporters of the project have rightly stated that Perth is the fastest growing city in Australia, and
change is inevitable to support all the requirements of a large population. Negative impact 2: The
appeal of the areas around the Elizabeth Quay development may have been affected due to noise,
pollution, smoke and dust in the air and increased traffic congestion. This could affect the businesses
around these areas as they may not have gotten as many customers. Also, buildings that used to be in
prime positions (facing the river) will have lost value due

Biblical Reflection Paper
Over the course of the semester we have learned about the covenant between God and humanity. In
the Bible, the Old and New Testament, both have stories relating to covenant as a promise and
response. There are also stories of covenant and sacrifice. A covenant is an agreement between two
people and promises people make to each other. One of the main ideas of the bible is the covenant
between God and his people. As we read in Genesis nine in the Old Testament, God had a covenant
with Noah and his sons. This story was relating God s covenant as a promise to never flood the world
again. See, I am now establishing my covenant with you and your descendants after you and with
every living creature that was with you, the birds, the tame animals, and all the wild animals that were
with you all that came out of the ark. I will establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all
creatures be destroyed by the waters of a flood; there shall not be another flood to devastate the earth.
God said: this is the sign of the covenant that I am making between me and you and every living
creature with you for all ages to come (Gen 9: 9 12). These verses talk about how God promised Noah
to never flood the earth again. Noah s response to this covenant was to have faith and build an ark to
save his family and animals. He had confidence in God and this teaches us if we have faith in God we
will not be forgotten. God will have faith in you if you have faith in him. In the New Testament

Choices In The Whispering Town And Paper Clips
Every choice that everybody makes effects what happens to us and deciding to be Jewish had a lot of
consequences back in the 1940s. Millions of Jews died all because of the one decision that Hitler
made. The killing of Jews ended up leading to the killing of 24 million other people. In the sources of
The Book Thief, Eva s Story, children s literature and in the film Paper Clips, several choices that key
characters made affected how the Holocaust was dealt with. In children s literature every character has
to make a choice for them to decide every story. In the book The Whispering Town, a young girl
named Anett made the choice to help out the Jews that she was helping out to hide in her basement.
Every once in a while the Nazi police would come and check out to see if anyone in the neighborhood
has smuggled in any Jews to hide. This is what the book said, We ve heard rumors that someone is
hiding Jews on this street, said a soldier, pushing the door open. I haven t heard any rumors, I said,
trying to stop my voice from shaking (Elvgren 20). This is the leading up to when she helped out the
Jews successfully escape the town by using all the help of the citizens. This is an example of how

Analysis Of Viola Hastings s She s The Man
a) First Topic
Viola Hastings, is the protagonist in the film She s The Man. She is a female soccer player at Cornwall
University, until the school cuts her soccer team off from the after school extracurricular activities
program. After the sexist coach refuses her suggestion of joining the male soccer team, she
impersonates her brother and tryouts for the soccer team at Illyria. She believes the only way to attest
her capability is if she is unable to join the male soccer team at Cornwall is to beat them. Viola s
character would be a negative realistic representation of women, because she s an athletic woman who
remains attractive in the male gaze perspective. In the male gaze we would expect her to be fragile,
delicate and helpless woman rather than goal oriented and driven woman in order for her to remain
attractive to the male audience and characters in the film.
Viola s devotion to soccer presents her as possessing too much boyishness to her mother and other
adult females in the debutante society. She lacks several feminine mannerisms. For instance, while
Duke and Justin are physically fighting over her, she jumps on Justin s back and later removes
popcorn from her top in an unladylike fashion, of which she is reminded by her mother. There is a
later scene in the film when the debutantes are having dinner, Viola is chewing the chicken with her
mouth open and Cheryl, the debutante coach, reminds her of her manners by saying Viola, darling.
Remember, chew like you have

Child Marketing Is A Social Problem
The video consuming kids throws greatly needed radiance on the deeds of an unrelenting multi billion
dollar advertising machine that sells junk food, bogus educational stuff, family cars and ferocious
video games to children and their parents. Drawing on the approaches of health care scientists,
children activitists and organizational insiders, the video concentrates on the volatile growth of child
marketing. It achieves this through deregulation where the youth have now adopted the latest
improvements in marketing especially in psychology and neuroscience (Vrany, 2017). This has seen
American children transform into one of the most influential and lucrative customer demographics in
the globe. The video reposes against the wholesale ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As a matter of fact, the American Academy of Pediatrics discourages too much of screen media
exposure for children. There is proof that extended and regular exposure to screen media may lead to
reduced concentration among kids.
The problem of social marketing is prevalent in developed countries where government and
campaigners contest improved child advertising standards with companies arguing that this issues
depend on individual and parental choices. Children start their consumer journey during their first
years of existence which make them to definitely deserve immense concern as consumers during this
period. Studies show that child marketing of today cannot be compared with that of the past
(Shan,2010). Today, marketing by child psychologists is made feasible by improved technology. Many
years back, companies were using less than hundred million dollars annually marketing to children.
Currently, more than seventeen billion is being used in the marketing field of children (Keyway et al.,
2001).
In the documentary, stealth advertising is seen in an organization by the name GIA (Girls Intelligence
Agency). The company uses product placement at sleep over parties. This proves that marketing to our
young ones is ubiquitous, with various cash trapped academic institutions accepting sponsorship from
organizations. This means that brand names

America s Westward Expansion
During America s Westward expansion, many individuals struggled to survive. The dangers of
traveling were deadly to all groups. This especially applied to the emigrants on the Oregon trail. The
terrain on the trail was harsh which made the journey very difficult. The emigrants on the Oregon Trail
faced the most difficulty trying to survive in the West because of the disease, expensive costs of travel,
and environmental threats.
To begin, the emigrants on the Oregon Trail encountered several problems. The many problems they
encountered are why they faced the most difficulty trying to survive in the West. One problem the
travelers faced was disease. Among the many months of travel, sickness was spread. Unfortunately,
they were very deadly. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Knowing that the trail they traveled on was more than 2,000 miles long, it would be a long journey.
On their trip, there were many supplies that were needed in order to survive. The more distance they
traveled, the more supplies they needed. From this, everything would not be cheap. The emigrants
traveled on wagons that were pulled by animals. The wagons were mainly made out of wood that had
a waterproof linen canvas covering it. Linda Alchin states, The cost of a wagon ranged from $100 to
$200 dollars... (Oregon Trail). This was expensive during the time period. They faced difficulty
because the cost of the wagon was not worth it in some situations. The wagons had no suspension,
resulting in people to walk instead of riding. This made it very uncomfortable for the emigrants. Also,
on the rocky trail, many wagons tipped over, crushing people. The highly priced cost of travel made it
difficult for the travelers to afford what was needed in order to survive the long and harsh trip. Also,
the wagons were pulled by different kinds of animals such as horses, cows, mules and oxen. These
animals were important to the emigrants as a survival tool, but they were not cheap. In the article
Oregon Trail for Kids, the author states that the cost of the animal was about fifty dollars(Oregon
Trail).Like the wagon cost, the animal was expensive. The Prospectors in Gold Rush also faced the
same challenge. Instead of wagons and animals, they had to pay a certain amount of money to travel
by boat. Although it was hard for them to pay money to travel, the emigrants were faced with more
difficulty because they payed a higher amount. Therefore, the cost to travel for the emigrants on the
Oregon trail was not cheap. As a result, it was difficult to

Lavender Scare Analysis
The Lavender Scare was the name given to the systematic dismissal of a thousand homosexual
government workers implemented by the US State Committee. The source that describes the reason
for their dismissal was a report on December 15, 1950 by the US State committee. Its assertion against
homosexuals hinges on the opinions of contemporary authorities such as doctors, psychologist, law
enforcement and various other specialists of human behavior. The consensus created from these
experts describes homosexuality as psychologically created, an emotional stunted individual, and was
curable but requires the effort of the homosexual individual. These views present the fear of anything

with my uncle and two of my cousins stands out more than the rest. I will admit I should have

Life Of Our Time As A Student
In the fast paced life of our time as a student, it is easy to forget to reflect on our time here at Boston
University. Through all of our exams, papers, group projects, and late night outings, our thoughts ebb
and flow, and often we forget to reflect on all the progress that we ve made throughout the semester.
As students, we re exposed to so much information, be we also find ourselves relearning the things we
thought we understood all along, and so, for this assignment I have chosen to go back and reflect on
my reflections. My goal is to better understand the journey that I have gone through as a first semester
Writing Consultant, to highlight the anticipated challenges and the unsolicited worrying that I had at
the beginning of the year, and to celebrate the progress that I ve made along the way. I will draw upon
my reflections, using specific quotes, as well as some of the course material, to understand where my

consultant, I was a bit nervous or more accurately, I was very nervous! Although I had plenty of
experience working as either a tutor or a teacher assistant, I realized that most of my experience dealt
with teaching math and science. In my mind, I believed that math and science were less fluid and
more structured, and their clear and concrete answers made the tutor s job easy by providing the
educator with an answer that was undisputable. Before my job

very different from American trucks. Their trucks are ninety five percent commercial cabs so, their

there have also been metacognitive Intervention Studies and Problem Solving Performance Research
on metacognitive activity of expert problem solvers. These studies have been used to identify
strategies used by expert problem solvers and instructing other students to improve their mathematical
problem solving skills. Unfortunately, it has been difficult to distinguish if mathematical problem
solving skills improved due to interventions utilizing identified strategies or just by additional
exposure to more problem solving activities. The authors extended a study regarding metacognitive
activity looking at mathematical problem solving focusing on metacognitive behaviors by Wilson
(2001) and Wilson and Clarke (2002, 2004) utilizing their framework and methodology. Data was
collected from three connect cases. Participantss were selected by having mathematics teachers recruit
volunteers. 29 students volunteered in which their teachers were asked to respond to a survey that
described the individuals ability to participate in the study. All the surveys were examined, finding 3
individuals all from one class, which would give a similar knowledge base. The data collected came

Comparison Of Adam And Eve In The Book Of Mormon
Although the Book of Mormon seems to have some similarities in common with the Bible, there are
parts from these two texts that are contradicting to each other. For instance, one of the obvious
differences is the Fall of Adam and Eve, a scene where God punishes them for eating the forbitten
fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. In Chapter Three of Genesis from the Bible, the
setting in which Adam and Even lived called the Garden of Eden is described as peaceful and utopic
place until they violated God s rules and unleashed the original sin as well as immortality in the all
humanity. However, their action is rather considered necessary and taken more positively in the Book
of Mormon since it is believed that their disobedience led to females ability to reproduce offspring and
it also brought joy to the world despite the other risks, according to Chapter Two of II Nephi. Unlike
the story in the Bible, the Graden of Eden is portrayed as a place where ... [all things] must have
remained forever and had no end... rather than a perfect world as described in Genesis. ... Show more

In Mark from the Bible, Jesus commands his Apostles to explore the world and preach the gospel.
This, however, does not exist in the Chapter 11 of III Nephi and instead he asks them to declare the
words which [he has] spoken unto the ends of the earth. Nevertheless, there are some similarities
between these two same chapters as well. One of the examples is the concept of baptism. The Gospel
of Mark states that those who believe in Jesus as the Son of God will be saved and baptized while
those who do not will be condemned. This is clearly written even in the Book of Mormon.
Additionally, it is written that those who wish to get baptized are required to immerse themselves into
the water in both

Character Analysis Of The Boy In The Striped Pajamas
In the book The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne, the main character, Bruno, changes
throughout the story due to his interactions and relationship with Shmuel, a Jewish boy in a German
concentration camp. Prior to meeting Shmuel, Bruno exhibited many negative character traits. For
example, just after Bruno arrives at Out With, Bruno begins to complain to Maria, their maid, on all of
the horrible traits the house possesses: Well, if Father s job means that we have to move away from
our house and the sliding banister and my three best friends for life, then I think Father should think
twice about his job, don t you? (Boyne 17). Bruno already misses his old home, which allowed him to
play and make his three best friends for life . He had enjoyed the familiarness and entertainment of his
own home which made moving much harder. At his new house, Bruno is disappointed that he does not
have as many opportunities as he had had in Berlin. Not only did Bruno miss his old home, but his
new house made him uncomfortable. When gazing out his window, Bruno spots the wall of the
concentration camp as He put his face to the glass and saw what was out there, and this time when his
eyes opened wide and his mouth made the shape of an O, and his hands stayed by his sides because
something made him feel very cold and unsafe (Boyne 19). Before meeting Shmuel, Bruno is lonely at
Out With. He has been hoping for an adventurous exploration to go on, yet finding out the unknown
about these people makes him uncomfortable. Unsure of the wall s purpose, the wall gives him an
eerie feeling. He does not recognize these people either, nor does he know the reasoning on why they
are behind the wall. This is not the kind of adventure Bruno was looking for. Bruno s life before
meeting Shmuel was very lonely and dull, yet after meeting his new friend, Bruno began to rather
enjoy his time in Poland. After befriending Shmuel, Bruno s thoughts and opinions on Out With are
altered as his loneliness has faded. To illustrate, when Bruno and Shmuel meet for the first time, each
boy takes his turn sharing something about himself. When Bruno asks how old Shmuel is, he responds
by saying I m nine, he [Shmuel] said. My birthday is

Every year, hundreds of thousands of people tune in to watch Fashion Week runway shows from

is impossible to miss a controversial detail within the shows, the skeleton thin models showcasing the
designs. Not only are these models harming themselves in order to fit into the industry s expectations,

Psychologist Jane Callaghan expresses that a positive body image doesn t rely solely on the
comparisons to other girls (Callaghan). Media images are only a tiny contributing factor (Callaghan)
to the development of eating disorders. Other forces include a genetic predisposition to the mental
illness, low self esteem, and societal pressure (Mayo Clinic Staff). Callaghan explains that the
development of eating disorders often relies on one s attempt to control these external forces
(Callaghans). Understanding that there are factors affecting ones body image other than media
exposure, Callaghan argues that attacking these external forces, such as peer pressure and societal
misogyny, could be more effective than eliminating thin girls from the fashion industry, seeing as how
medias perpetual portrayal of thin girls is not the main cause for the rising rate of eating

Jamestown Vs Chesapeake Essay
Chesapeake is similar to Jamestown, in a few ways both had many changes in political systems, grew
tobacco as a cash crop, used slaves, and were Christian. They were also different, of course, as the
political systems they each went through were not the same, Jamestown traded with the natives
throughout its lifetime (while the Chesapeake only did initially), they had different denominations of
Christianity, and different physical settlements. With many similarities these two colonies were alike
overall. However, their smaller differences set them apart in a variety of ways.
Both colonies changed political systems and powers throughout their lifetimes sometimes the change

However, they were different denominations of Christianity, partial thanks to the different political
systems. From the beginning of the Chesapeake colony, the colonists were a mix of Protestants and
Catholics, as the colony was a proprietorship, not a royal colony. With its growth, the number of
Protestants rose, even though Lord Baltimore would ve like a completely Catholic colony. The route
he chose to protect the minority Catholics was to allow anyone to practice their religion, so long as
they believed in Jesus. This is similar to values in America today though it was more restricted in
Chesapeake at the time, it was one of the colonies that started the idea of religious freedom.
Jamestown was comprised of settlers of the Anglican faith, the official religion of the English at the
time. This was most likely due to it being a royal colony, and one of the first ones at that so the people
chosen to become colonists were faithful representatives of the country. Their physical settlements
were also different Jamestown was a small village surrounded by a wall. This type of settlement was
used because they didn t know what to expect and protect themselves from, and didn t think they
needed to farm for their survival (expecting to trade with the natives). Chesapeake quickly developed
into a rural colony, though, with farms spread far apart from one another. Using farming as a large
food and profit source, they grew foods like corn and

Bear Hunt Illustration
The children s book We re Going on a Bear Hunt utilises the switching between black and white
illustrations and full colour effectively. The pages of the story that are in black and white occur when
the family meet an obstacle, such as long wavy grass , and once they have overcome said obstacle the
illustration returns to colour. It repeats in this manner throughout the picture books entirety. In doing
this, the illustrator has emphasised the texts gloominess and foreboding of what the family will have to
do ( we have to go through it ).
The way this text has been structured by combining the aperture, exposition and inciting moment. The
first sentence We re going on a bear hunt tells the reader what the story is going to entail whilst giving
away what future conflict they could be if the family were to find a bear. The exposition is also viewed
here as the reader, with the illustrations help, knows that we (the family) are who is involved and it is
a beautiful day in the country. Conflict rises steadily on every second page revealing a new hurdle the
family has to conquer (mud, lake etc) but is resolved immediately until the climax when the big bear is

him the lowest in approval rating ever seen. This is because he had the lowest approval rating when he
came into office in January of 2017. John Cole has been a political cartoonist for the Time Tribune
since April of 2005. In the political cartoon Shadow of the Truth demonstrates how Donald Trump
declares he is not a racist, but he turns around and says something or post something on social media
that is racist. The first thing that caught my eye was the shadow of Trump which was a silhouette of
the Ku Klux Klan also known as the KKK. Cole references the KKK by using the silhouette of what

Elizabeth in Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen Essay
Chantal Fauconier
Jane Austen, a writer in 19th Century England, wrote about what she knew; namely the societal norms
of her era and class. In a time where men were given all the status and privileges, she wrote novels
predominantly about women, their position in society, and the roles that they played. Since women
were not entitled to property, they would often grow up with the goal of finding a suitable husband
(Guidelines 1990:1). It is for this reason that people have criticised
Jane Austen s writings saying that she reinforced the norms of patriarchy by reassuring the reader
about the order and stability of society. However her novels contain more than this in that her
characters often go against the conventional norms ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Therefore, when Mr. Collins arrogantly tells Elizabeth that My situation in life, my connections with
the family of De Bourgh, and my relationship to your own are circumstances highly in my favour ... it
is by no means certain that another offer of marriage may ever be made to you (Austen1990: 97 98),
she politely refused saying I thank you again and again for the honour you have done me in your
proposals, but to accept them is absolutely impossible. My feelings in every respect forbid it (Austen
1990: 98).
Mr. Collins was shocked by her refusal as he expected her to conform to the societal conventions. This
is one instance of rebellion versus conformity in the novel.
Elizabeth s rebellion (and insistence of going against the conventional reasons for marrying) is
contrasted with Charlotte s conformity. Charlotte accepts Mr. Collin s proposal as she is twenty seven
and needs to secure her financial stability, knowing that another proposal might not come. Charlotte
therefore, unlike
Elizabeth, married for money and not for love (Newton in Clark 1994:
131). Elizabeth thus sought her future husband with regards to how she felt about him and rebels
against the expectations of society.
Therefore, Unlike Charlotte, Elizabeth will not violate

Difference Between Semiotics, Semiology And Difference
What is Semiotics, Semiology and Difference? In this paper I will define the Semiotics, Semiology
and Difference then I will give the views and beliefs of the three of the masterminds behind these
terms.
Firstly, Semiology and Semiotics are two related disciplines, which study semiotics, the relation of
significance involving signs, object and mind, and classification of signs. Semiotics is a synonym for
Semiology. Semiotics is defined as the study of signs and symbols and their interpretation, while
Semiology is semiotics, the study of signs. According to Swiss Linguist and Semiotician Ferdinand de
Saussure semiotics is the science of signs. Saussure in Course in General Linguistics, said the roles of
signs are part of our social life . For him, sign has two parts, the signifier and the signified. The
signifier is the physical form of the sign. The signified is the concept to which the signifier refers the
meaning or idea it refers to in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For him, Semiotics is a formal doctrine of sign, signs must have a real connection with the thing it
signifies. It is a much boarder clasof Saussure s signifier, as it extends into the physical as well.
According to him, there is a third element that must be present for signification to take happen. This,
additional element is the understanding of the relation between signifier and signified, he referred to
this as the interpretant. The interpretant sheds light on the relationship between signifier and signified.
Pierce admonishes that a sign or signifier must be interpreted in order to exist. The sign or signifier
creates an interpretant and this in turn allows us to access it object or the signified. In other words, if
the sign means something it requires somebody (a mind) signifying and something (an object) that is

And with this growth came a wider variety of films. But, perhaps inevitably, it was not until the
political upheaval in the years following WWII and the onset of the Palestinian Israeli conflict that
Arab cinema took up more hard hitting themes. (Seymour 70). Therefore, the European colonization
of the Arab nations touched the industry of Arab films positively.
Nevertheless, the industry of films in the Arab nations was not able to fund programs and movies in
spite of the needs to new programs and films. According to Viola Shafik in the Arab Cinema book, the
Arab channels have been in need for new programs but there is no funds that can support them. Two
dozen Arab channels, including those of the Egyptian ERTU (Egyptian Radio and TV Union), are run
in the Arab world and Europe and in the last few years have multiplied the need for new Arab
programs. The film industry, however, is unable to profit from this development. (Shafik 43).
Foreigners or European minorities who had immigrated to Arab countries owned the movies theaters
that were originally introduced in Arab nations. The same applied to film production, which was
originally dominated by investors who were non natives or foreigners. In evaluating the development

Narrative Style And Film Analysis Of The Grand Budapest Hotel
The Grand Budapest Hotel revolves around Europe of the 1930s and 1960s while it was in time of the
war, through the adventures of The Grand Budapest Hotel s doorman Zero and the Hotel manager
Gustave. The saga is linked to a burglar and a Renaissance painting, a great family s wealth war, and
the sudden change of war in Europe. It reflects the vicissitudes of political history in Europe for half a
century. This article will analyze The Grand Budapest Hotel from two aspects: artistic style and film
theme.
I. Artistic style
The Grand Budapest Hotel is the work of American director Wes Anderson. His works have a strong
personal style: bright colour, the full symmetry of the composition, a straight frame, a deliberately
orderly stance, unique visual style and narrative mode. In his film, a sense of humour is often through
Deadpan expression: actors often deadpan and no body movements, but in the restraint and slight
change, as well as in the pause between the odd cold humour. The hues, props and sets of his films are
often colourful and whimsical. There are still plenty of these factors in The Grand Budapest Hotel, but
many new elements are added.
1. Narrative mode
In terms of the overall structure of the film, this film breaks through the previous single line narrative
mode, using four layers of nested narrative structure, layer by layer, and without any lack of
independence. The first level is a little girl went to the cemetery to worship writer s grave, she put the
key to hanging on the writer statue, and took out a book called The Grand Budapest Hotel , she turned
to the end of the book, the book was printed with pictures of writer; the second level is the story of the
girl who began to pay tribute to the author in the cemetery. The third level is in The Grand Budapest
Hotel, where old Zero tells his story to a young man. Time and space returned to Zero when Zero was
young, and this began the journey of Zero and Mr. Gustave, this is the fourth level of narrative mode.
Skip the middle specific storyline and go straight to the end. Gustave s last moments are in black and
white. Then, when the writer was young, he ended his conversation with Zero, and the writer was
sitting in the lobby of The Grand

access [to Cuba]... (Mangla). Cuba would become a frequent travel spot for tourists from the United
States because of Cuba s close proximity. The expansion of American tourism would benefit airlines,
local shops, universities, and restaurants. Authors Jorge Dominquez, professor of International Affairs
at Harvard, and Barberia Lorena, professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of
Sao Paulo, recalled the increase of students studying abroad to Cuba. The professors also found that in
2004 Cuba was one of the top fifteen places of international study. With Cuba s strong position in
foreign studies, tourism has the ability to open new education opportunities to students as well as
increase the income from travel. As educational opportunities become available, this would result in
even more revenue due to the cost of universities and tuition. Students who receive an education in
Cuba and return home could have a more positive view of Cuba which could also boost Cuba s
position in foreign countries. This growth in tourism to Cuba would lead to an increase of income as

Applying Critical Thinking And Reading Skills
Taking this class has taught me a lot about myself as a learner. At the beginning of this course I
defined learning as how one takes in information in their surroundings and applies it to their life.
While I do still believe that is a part of the learning process, I now know how to properly use my
strong suits and weaknesses to get the best results from the information presented to me. With the
information I have acquired throughout this course, I would also include applying critical thinking and
reading skills to better decipher the information gained to my definition of learning. Knowing how to
interpret the information given to you is a huge part of learning. I am a strong willed learner, I am able
use all of my patterns on a use first basis with the exception of confluence. My LCI score for
confluence is 20 which means I use it at an as needed level, while I prefer not to use it often I am able
to use it effectively. I mainly use this pattern when I am working with customers and patients and do
not want to come across as robotic and only giving the standard verbatim for their concerns. Technical
reasoning is another pattern that is on the lower end of my LCI scores, I received a 26 for this pattern.
There are times that I do enjoy learning how to do things on my own as in opposed to waiting for
exact instructions. While working in my patient s homes, I sometimes like to figure out how to set up
their new equipment without regard to any instructions that may be right

Technology And Its Impact On Technology Essay
In today s society, there have been many speculations on the impact of technology. The rise of
technology has unfolded into the betterment of many advances in the industry. However, it is no
surprise that these advances have also caused society into depending so much on technology. Author
Sherry Turkle, argued that we as a society have distanced ourselves from one another; she discusses
her observations drawn from human beings and their interaction with social machines. She indicated
that humans rely much more on technology which has negatively impacted the way we communicate
with one another. Every individual has their own flaws. In our imperfections, we tend to discriminate
among one another, we have preconceived notion based on what we have seen or experienced.
Perhaps, there is a say that goes a book should never be judged by its cover . In addition to, various
studies observed by between robots and children, Turkle implies that robots are slowing replacing
humans. As a result of our dependency on technology, humans are failing each other and the constant
rise of technology should not be blame for it, as we do have control over some of these issues.
In the 1760 1800 s, the first machine age occurred during the industrial revolution. The industrial
revolution was transition from a hand labor to a machine labor. The new machines were powered by
water, steam and coal. The Industrial revolution marked a very profitable time for many factory
owners because, unlike humans

Introduction:
The Bamiyan Buddha in Afghanistan has been restored by 3D light projection technology by Xinyu

over the Buddhas, as the Bamiyan can see their hope again.
Must say, reappearing the Buddhas is an extremely huge project for them. Zhang with his team has
been driving 10,000 km from Beijing and passing through conflict zones. On this trip, revisiting The
Silk Road and experiencing the cultures of the Middle East were the main purpose.
Paragraph 1: The Buddhas of Bamiyan do not belong to Bamiyans, or not just Afghanistan. It is
owned by the whole mankind. Said by Xinyu Zhang, the plotter of this project. In Afghanistan, there
were two sides of prevalent opinions for restoring the Buddha, one was for restoration, and the other
was for maintaining the sites. Thus, the project of using 3D light projection technology has been
permitted by UNESCO. Restoring the Buddha of Bamiyan, he needed to do the search for all the
information and create the portrayal for the projector. A culture researcher from Kabul University was
willing to provide more information for Zhang, even though he stills got no ideas what the face of the

Copyright And Copyright Of Copyright Essay
The first thing for a web site owner to consider when publishing web applications is copyright. To
protect the originality of a web site owner s work , copyright is important issue. Basically, if someone
violates one of the five exclusive rights given to copyright owner by the Copyright Act , it is
considered as a copyright infringement. These include the right to reproduce a work, the right to
develop derivative works, the right to publicly display the work, or distribute copies3. Copyright
protection is related with following elements :
 The text of the site
 The pictures on the site
 Any clips of videos on the site
Using graphics is one of the important hallmarks of some popular web sites such as Microsoft s
Internet Explorer logo . In addition, text on a web site is also important part of copyright. This is
because plagiarizing text from third parties without permission is illegal like images do. To be more
specific, copyright is an especially essential issue in several web sites of search engines such as Yahoo
and Bing, and Google. In the case of both Yahoo and Bing, they are good at dealing with copyright
infringement by disabling accounts who repeatedly infringe other s copyrights . And, Yahoo
particularly takes care of listening consumers complaints if there are any wrong copyright
infringement reports6. However, Google automatically lower ranking of a particular web site in the

This recession hits home with the automobile industry. During this current recession GM is facing the
possibility of bankruptcy, but is hoping to be helped out by the government. History I. Analysis of
External Environment a. Analysis of the General Environment One driving force of change is
technology. The automobile industry is constantly focusing on technology in order to make themselves
and their cars better. They constantly compete to be the first one to have the newest and best idea. One
of these ideas is an electric vehicle. GM, Ford, and Toyota all have electric automobiles. GM has the
Chevy Volt. Volt One of Ford s electric cars is the Electric Ranger. Ranger Toyota had the Rav4 EV,
but due to discouraging sales it stopped production. Toyota remains committed to developing an Eco
Vehicle, one that will have a minimal impact on the environment. Rav4 One purpose of the electric
automobiles is to have the ability to drive to work using only electricity. Currently during longer trips
you would have to use a combination of electric and gasoline power. Electric Car Another area of
technology that the automobile industry is working on is fuel cells. Even though it is predicted that

revolutionary idea in automobiles. FCVs reflect a completely new way of thinking about automobiles.

Significance Of The Bystander Effect In Elie Wiesel s Night
In the year of 1964, a woman named Kitty Genovese was murdered in plain sight of her on looking
New York City neighbors, however, none of them attempted to help or notify the authorities. This
event gave rise to the term Genovese Effect otherwise known as the Bystander Effect . The name
refers to the phenomenon that occurs when large groups of people don t take the responsibility of
helping in a dire situation. Unsurprisingly, when reading the book Night , by Elie Wiesel, many
readers see a direct correlation between the story and the bystander effect. Towards the beginning of
Night , we see the first instance of the bystander effect shown when nobody living in Sighet does
anything to heed Moishe s warnings. This closely resembles a study done by SoulPancake in which
people were to watch a product presentation, (in this case about a tent), the catch being that everyone
in the room except for the test subject knew that the presenter would purposely fail to assemble the
product. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In contrast to this, the smallest group consisting of only one person, (the test subject), had an average
time for help to be given of only three minutes and nineteen seconds. Moishe s predicament in the
book mimics the study as nobody in the large population was willing to lend a hand, (or believe in),
the struggling person. Second, the bystander effect is seen in Night when all the Jewish people of
Sighet were confined to a ghetto. According to Jason Marsh and Dacher Keltner, a study was
performed in the wake of the murder of Genovese in which differently sized groups of people would
communicate to each other via an intercom. In this experiment however, there was a single person
helping with the study who would pretend to have a seizure while conversing with other participants.

  • 2. Cultural Imperialism In America America has always been imperialistic. The existence of an imperialist America is a fact that cannot be denied. During the war between America and Spain, America illustrated its imperialistic views when it prompted the government to establish a plan to merge the remaining overseas territories: the Philippines, Puerto Rico, and Guam. Also, America has been in the process of converting their domestic industries into a global empire, which has the potential to capture the world market, acquire natural resources from foreign sources, and sell its surplus industrial agriculture. Overall, America is imperialist and both historical and current events illustrate how America upholds imperialism, which comes several forms including military, economic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... First of all, English, America s most widely spoken language, has become the world s lingua franca, partially due to British imperialism but also because of American cultural imperialism. It is an international language. In many countries such as Philippines, they believe that English is superior and will provide more opportunities than their mother language. The Philippines uses English in government, business, education, etc. rather than Tagalog. It, along with countless other countries, has the mentality that if its people do not learn English, they will fall behind in global development. Travelers come everywhere over the world also use English as their communication. Also, America s pop culture has achieved extreme popularity; almost all of the food or drinks that people eat everyday comes from America, for example, Starbucks, McDonald s, Coca Cola, and more. Starbucks has spread all over the world and according to their website, there are more than 21,000 stores in 65 countries worldwide ( Starbucks Coffee International ). In addition, American clothing brands and pop music are more prevalent than ever. With that being said, American cultural imperialism is trying to spread America s ideals worldwide through pop culture and subtly push other countries to assimilate into American ... My Experience At The Gym When I started searching for a place to volunteer, I had a tough time finding the correct place, because most places required for me to fill out an application to do a background check. I understand is a process, but it was going to take too much time, and I wanted to start as soon as possible because of time matter. However, that was not the only problem. The main issue was my work schedule because I work two jobs, and I only have free time part of the weekends, which made my situation much more complicated. The places I called needed the most help on week days. After calling several places and visiting some of the locations, I decided to try another day and went to work. While I was at work, I was having a conversation with one of the young lady s that exercises there at the gym, I was telling her about my service learning, and that I had been looking all day but could not yet find one that would work with my schedule. As I was telling her this, someone overheard the conversation and said... Settlement Privilege In Canada Settlement privilege is a legal tool designed to safeguard information exchanged between a plaintiff and a defendant or defendants during settlement negotiations. This tool permits any involved parties to freely discuss trial matters without the worry of their discussions later being held against them. Settlement privilege laws were set by the courts to assist in their efforts to promote settlements out of court, which in turn, decreases legal costs, along with public resources. The following guidelines determine settlement privilege, as is found in Canada s Law of Evidence: A continuing dispute must be currently under contemplation or in progress. Though he desires wealth, Jacob relies on female characters to accomplish his goals. Frank s journey home is driven by his desire to save Cee. Booker spends the majority of the novel controlled by Adam, but is finally able to let go after Queen points out his influence. While there is a degree of independence, Jacob, Frank, and Booker all need a female character to obtain autonomy. To begin with, Jacob s goal in life is to become wealthy, much like the D Ortagas. Due to his poor ability at managing a farm, however, he is forced to rely on women in his life. Lina recounts how she had to teach him how to fish and how his crops died when he ignored her advice: He ignored her warning of using alewives as fertilizer only to see his plots of tender vegetables torn up by foragers attracted by the smell (A Mercy 58). When he begins to travel, he abandons the farm entirely and leaves it in the care of Rebekka and Lina while he is away. He certainly has the desire to pursue his own goals but can only do so by leaning on women. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Her dedication to the health community is inarguable. As serving numerous roles as leader, her thoughts and visions touched many. One example of her mark in nursing is the Roy Adaptation Model. It is in this model that health is defined as a state of adaptation that occurs as a result of successfully adapting to stressors. Coping mechanisms consist of regulator and cognator subsystems. The regulator subsystem is made up of automatic neural endocrine and chemical activity. The cognator subsystem consists of cognitive and emotive pathways. These pathways involve information processing, learning, judgment, and emotions (George, 2002). In the final component of her model Roy address the goal of nursing is to promote adaptation in each of the four modes. By doing so, promotes a person s health, quality of life, and dying and dignity. The four models according to Andrews and Roy, (1991) are physiological, self concept, role function and interdependence. Roy s model includes six steps in order to carry out the nursing process. These steps are assessment of behavior, assessment of stimuli, nursing diagnosis, goal setting, interventions, and evaluation. Introduction Elizabeth Quay is located between barrack and Williams street and will cover 10 hectares of prime riverfront land. The inlet will be 2.7 hectares large. It is connected directly to, and extends an important north south city corridor that will make room for the main commercial, retail, transport, cultural, entertainment and education areas of the city. There will be 400 new hotel rooms built in Elizabeth Quay which is necessary to accommodate the tourists that are expected to visit. Negative impact 1: Since the project was announced, there have been many different opinions about whether or not Elizabeth Quay is a good idea. In July of 2012, it was found that 41% of the population of Perth was for Elizabeth Quay, while 36% did not think it was a good idea. Interestingly, it was found that liberal and green supporters were more in favour of the project than labor supporters. Many of those not in favour of the project believe that it does little for Australian heritage and that it isn t worth the disruption of traffic that would be caused by the closing of Riverside drive during the building period. It is also thought that many people in Perth are in fear of change; that they want it to stay the same sleepy town that it had been in the past. But in opposition to this, supporters of the project have rightly stated that Perth is the fastest growing city in Australia, and change is inevitable to support all the requirements of a large population. Negative impact 2: The appeal of the areas around the Elizabeth Quay development may have been affected due to noise, pollution, smoke and dust in the air and increased traffic congestion. This could affect the businesses around these areas as they may not have gotten as many customers. Also, buildings that used to be in prime positions (facing the river) will have lost value due ... • 8. Biblical Reflection Paper Over the course of the semester we have learned about the covenant between God and humanity. In the Bible, the Old and New Testament, both have stories relating to covenant as a promise and response. There are also stories of covenant and sacrifice. A covenant is an agreement between two people and promises people make to each other. One of the main ideas of the bible is the covenant between God and his people. As we read in Genesis nine in the Old Testament, God had a covenant with Noah and his sons. This story was relating God s covenant as a promise to never flood the world again. See, I am now establishing my covenant with you and your descendants after you and with every living creature that was with you, the birds, the tame animals, and all the wild animals that were with you all that came out of the ark. I will establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all creatures be destroyed by the waters of a flood; there shall not be another flood to devastate the earth. God said: this is the sign of the covenant that I am making between me and you and every living creature with you for all ages to come (Gen 9: 9 12). These verses talk about how God promised Noah to never flood the earth again. Noah s response to this covenant was to have faith and build an ark to save his family and animals. He had confidence in God and this teaches us if we have faith in God we will not be forgotten. God will have faith in you if you have faith in him. In the New Testament ... • 11. Analysis Of Viola Hastings s She s The Man a) First Topic Viola Hastings, is the protagonist in the film She s The Man. She is a female soccer player at Cornwall University, until the school cuts her soccer team off from the after school extracurricular activities program. After the sexist coach refuses her suggestion of joining the male soccer team, she impersonates her brother and tryouts for the soccer team at Illyria. She believes the only way to attest her capability is if she is unable to join the male soccer team at Cornwall is to beat them. Viola s character would be a negative realistic representation of women, because she s an athletic woman who remains attractive in the male gaze perspective. In the male gaze we would expect her to be fragile, delicate and helpless woman rather than goal oriented and driven woman in order for her to remain attractive to the male audience and characters in the film. Viola s devotion to soccer presents her as possessing too much boyishness to her mother and other adult females in the debutante society. She lacks several feminine mannerisms. For instance, while Duke and Justin are physically fighting over her, she jumps on Justin s back and later removes popcorn from her top in an unladylike fashion, of which she is reminded by her mother. There is a later scene in the film when the debutantes are having dinner, Viola is chewing the chicken with her mouth open and Cheryl, the debutante coach, reminds her of her manners by saying Viola, darling. There is proof that extended and regular exposure to screen media may lead to reduced concentration among kids. The problem of social marketing is prevalent in developed countries where government and campaigners contest improved child advertising standards with companies arguing that this issues depend on individual and parental choices. Children start their consumer journey during their first years of existence which make them to definitely deserve immense concern as consumers during this period. Studies show that child marketing of today cannot be compared with that of the past (Shan,2010). Today, marketing by child psychologists is made feasible by improved technology. Many years back, companies were using less than hundred million dollars annually marketing to children. Currently, more than seventeen billion is being used in the marketing field of children (Keyway et al., 2001). The more distance they traveled, the more supplies they needed. From this, everything would not be cheap. The emigrants traveled on wagons that were pulled by animals. The wagons were mainly made out of wood that had a waterproof linen canvas covering it. Linda Alchin states, The cost of a wagon ranged from $100 to $200 dollars... (Oregon Trail). This was expensive during the time period. They faced difficulty because the cost of the wagon was not worth it in some situations. The wagons had no suspension, resulting in people to walk instead of riding. This made it very uncomfortable for the emigrants. Also, on the rocky trail, many wagons tipped over, crushing people. The highly priced cost of travel made it difficult for the travelers to afford what was needed in order to survive the long and harsh trip. Also, the wagons were pulled by different kinds of animals such as horses, cows, mules and oxen. These animals were important to the emigrants as a survival tool, but they were not cheap. In the article Oregon Trail for Kids, the author states that the cost of the animal was about fifty dollars(Oregon Trail).Like the wagon cost, the animal was expensive. The Prospectors in Gold Rush also faced the same challenge. Instead of wagons and animals, they had to pay a certain amount of money to travel by boat. Although it was hard for them to pay money to travel, the emigrants were faced with more difficulty because they payed a higher amount. • 22. Comparison Of Adam And Eve In The Book Of Mormon Although the Book of Mormon seems to have some similarities in common with the Bible, there are parts from these two texts that are contradicting to each other. For instance, one of the obvious differences is the Fall of Adam and Eve, a scene where God punishes them for eating the forbitten fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. In Chapter Three of Genesis from the Bible, the setting in which Adam and Even lived called the Garden of Eden is described as peaceful and utopic place until they violated God s rules and unleashed the original sin as well as immortality in the all humanity. However, their action is rather considered necessary and taken more positively in the Book of Mormon since it is believed that their disobedience led to females ability to reproduce offspring and it also brought joy to the world despite the other risks, according to Chapter Two of II Nephi. The Gospel of Mark states that those who believe in Jesus as the Son of God will be saved and baptized while those who do not will be condemned. This is clearly written even in the Book of Mormon. • 23. Character Analysis Of The Boy In The Striped Pajamas In the book The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne, the main character, Bruno, changes throughout the story due to his interactions and relationship with Shmuel, a Jewish boy in a German concentration camp. Prior to meeting Shmuel, Bruno exhibited many negative character traits. For example, just after Bruno arrives at Out With, Bruno begins to complain to Maria, their maid, on all of the horrible traits the house possesses: Well, if Father s job means that we have to move away from our house and the sliding banister and my three best friends for life, then I think Father should think twice about his job, don t you? (Boyne 17). Bruno already misses his old home, which allowed him to play and make his three best friends for life . He had enjoyed the familiarness and entertainment of his own home which made moving much harder. At his new house, Bruno is disappointed that he does not have as many opportunities as he had had in Berlin. Not only did Bruno miss his old home, but his new house made him uncomfortable. When gazing out his window, Bruno spots the wall of the concentration camp as He put his face to the glass and saw what was out there, and this time when his eyes opened wide and his mouth made the shape of an O, and his hands stayed by his sides because something made him feel very cold and unsafe (Boyne 19). Before meeting Shmuel, Bruno is lonely at Out With. He has been hoping for an adventurous exploration to go on, yet finding out the unknown about these people makes him uncomfortable. Unsure of the wall s purpose, the wall gives him an eerie feeling. He does not recognize these people either, nor does he know the reasoning on why they are behind the wall. This is not the kind of adventure Bruno was looking for. Bruno s life before meeting Shmuel was very lonely and dull, yet after meeting his new friend, Bruno began to rather enjoy his time in Poland. After befriending Shmuel, Bruno s thoughts and opinions on Out With are altered as his loneliness has faded. To illustrate, when Bruno and Shmuel meet for the first time, each boy takes his turn sharing something about himself. The route he chose to protect the minority Catholics was to allow anyone to practice their religion, so long as they believed in Jesus. This is similar to values in America today though it was more restricted in Chesapeake at the time, it was one of the colonies that started the idea of religious freedom. Jamestown was comprised of settlers of the Anglican faith, the official religion of the English at the time. This was most likely due to it being a royal colony, and one of the first ones at that so the people chosen to become colonists were faithful representatives of the country. Elizabeth in Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen Essay Chantal Fauconier Jane Austen, a writer in 19th Century England, wrote about what she knew; namely the societal norms of her era and class. In a time where men were given all the status and privileges, she wrote novels predominantly about women, their position in society, and the roles that they played. Since women were not entitled to property, they would often grow up with the goal of finding a suitable husband (Guidelines 1990:1). Narrative Style And Film Analysis Of The Grand Budapest Hotel The Grand Budapest Hotel revolves around Europe of the 1930s and 1960s while it was in time of the war, through the adventures of The Grand Budapest Hotel s doorman Zero and the Hotel manager Gustave. The saga is linked to a burglar and a Renaissance painting, a great family s wealth war, and the sudden change of war in Europe. It reflects the vicissitudes of political history in Europe for half a century. This article will analyze The Grand Budapest Hotel from two aspects: artistic style and film theme. I. Artistic style The Grand Budapest Hotel is the work of American director Wes Anderson. His works have a strong personal style: bright colour, the full symmetry of the composition, a straight frame, a deliberately orderly stance, unique visual style and narrative mode. In his film, a sense of humour is often through Deadpan expression: actors often deadpan and no body movements, but in the restraint and slight change, as well as in the pause between the odd cold humour. The hues, props and sets of his films are often colourful and whimsical. There are still plenty of these factors in The Grand Budapest Hotel, but many new elements are added. 1. Narrative mode In terms of the overall structure of the film, this film breaks through the previous single line narrative mode, using four layers of nested narrative structure, layer by layer, and without any lack of independence. The first level is a little girl went to the cemetery to worship writer s grave, she put the key to hanging on the writer statue, and took out a book called The Grand Budapest Hotel , she turned to the end of the book, the book was printed with pictures of writer; the second level is the story of the girl who began to pay tribute to the author in the cemetery. The third level is in The Grand Budapest Hotel, where old Zero tells his story to a young man. Time and space returned to Zero when Zero was young, and this began the journey of Zero and Mr. Gustave, this is the fourth level of narrative mode. Skip the middle specific storyline and go straight to the end. Gustave s last moments are in black and white. Then, when the writer was young, he ended his conversation with Zero, and the writer was sitting in the lobby of The Grand ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 41. Applying Critical Thinking And Reading Skills Taking this class has taught me a lot about myself as a learner. At the beginning of this course I defined learning as how one takes in information in their surroundings and applies it to their life. While I do still believe that is a part of the learning process, I now know how to properly use my strong suits and weaknesses to get the best results from the information presented to me. With the information I have acquired throughout this course, I would also include applying critical thinking and reading skills to better decipher the information gained to my definition of learning. Knowing how to interpret the information given to you is a huge part of learning. I am a strong willed learner, I am able use all of my patterns on a use first basis with the exception of confluence. My LCI score for confluence is 20 which means I use it at an as needed level, while I prefer not to use it often I am able to use it effectively. I mainly use this pattern when I am working with customers and patients and do not want to come across as robotic and only giving the standard verbatim for their concerns. Technical reasoning is another pattern that is on the lower end of my LCI scores, I received a 26 for this pattern. There are times that I do enjoy learning how to do things on my own as in opposed to waiting for exact instructions. While working in my patient s homes, I sometimes like to figure out how to set up their new equipment without regard to any instructions that may be right ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 48. Significance Of The Bystander Effect In Elie Wiesel s Night In the year of 1964, a woman named Kitty Genovese was murdered in plain sight of her on looking New York City neighbors, however, none of them attempted to help or notify the authorities. This event gave rise to the term Genovese Effect otherwise known as the Bystander Effect . The name refers to the phenomenon that occurs when large groups of people don t take the responsibility of helping in a dire situation. Unsurprisingly, when reading the book Night , by Elie Wiesel, many readers see a direct correlation between the story and the bystander effect. Towards the beginning of Night , we see the first instance of the bystander effect shown when nobody living in Sighet does anything to heed Moishe s warnings. This closely resembles a study done by SoulPancake in which people were to watch a product presentation, (in this case about a tent), the catch being that everyone in the room except for the test subject knew that the presenter would purposely fail to assemble the product. ... In contrast to this, the smallest group consisting of only one person, (the test subject), had an average time for help to be given of only three minutes and nineteen seconds. Moishe s predicament in the book mimics the study as nobody in the large population was willing to lend a hand, (or believe in), the struggling person. Second, the bystander effect is seen in Night when all the Jewish people of Sighet were confined to a ghetto. According to Jason Marsh and Dacher Keltner, a study was performed in the wake of the murder of Genovese in which differently sized groups of people would communicate to each other via an intercom. In this experiment however, there was a single person helping with the study who would pretend to have a seizure while conversing with other participants. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
