Teach the group about the theories: ideology,
focus, purpose and the teacher role in facilitation.
In groups of three, summaries a given theory of
learning - using only ten words, but as many
images, symbols, numbers as you like in 20

Theories of learning lecture

Editor's Notes

  • #2 Overall aims of the session: In this session, we will think about theories of learning. Intended Learning Outcomes (relate to Module LO1)  By completing this session, learners should be aware of ways to: Explain different models of learning theory (knowledge); Identify how spaces can accommodate different models of learning (comprehension); and Create a 500-word blog post about how the design of a space can promote (or restrict) equality of opportunity (synthesis). This session will support your capacity to analyse and redesign (existing) spaces for learning.
  • #4 Explain different models of learning theory (knowledge);
  • #5 Explain different models of learning theory (knowledge);
  • #7 Does this quote relate to your experience?
  • #8 Teachers encourage student-centred learning by allowing students to share in decisions, believing in their capacity to lead, and remembering how it feels to learn. Ideological shift. Move from instruction to learning Knowledge to thinking Teacher-centred to student-centred. Driving change chapter – life long learning/learning anywhere and anytime access to technology Do learner-centred approaches work in every culture? - - life-long learning (do we have too? Why don’t we teach??)
  • #9 Explain different models of learning theory (knowledge); link this to educational drivers Behaviourism - skinner Cognitivism – Piaget/Yygotsky/Bruner
  • #11 Explain different models of learning theory (knowledge); new drivers – ideological shift – technology – life long learning Humanism – androgogy Social and situational learning – heutagogy (self-determinism) competence; relatedness; autonomy Deci and Ryan Intrinsic Social motivation Achievement motivation Instrumental motivation
  • #12 Thinking about you as learners, learning in HE we are going to learn something new ….. Adult learners
  • #13 How do we – at NTU – facilitate different approaches to learning? Knowledge transfer through lecture – direct instruction (not learning)
  • #14 Model the first three steps. Draw out views on lectures: who are they for? Where do they happen? When do they take place? How do they work? Why this way?
  • #15 How do we facilitate different approaches to learning? and Why should we care?
  • #16 Affective – humanist
  • #18 Review lecture In the seminar: You are being asked to investigate and report on theories of learning as a group
  • #19 TEST – you will be individually tested – so the group contribution is vital!! How does learning happen in behaviourism? How does learning happen in cognitivism? How does learning happen in humanism? How does learning happen in social and situational learning? What is the focus of learning for behaviourism? What is the focus of learning for cognitivism? What is the focus of learning for humanism? What is the focus of learning for social and situational learning? What Is the educators role in behaviourism? What Is the educators role in cognitivism? What Is the educators role in humanism? What Is the educators role in social and situational learning? What is the purpose of education for behaviourism? What is the purpose of education for cognitivism? What is the purpose of education for humanism? What is the purpose of education for social and situational learning?
  • #20 My theory of learning - In line with: Skinner – change in behavior learn then pass the test Lave and Wenger - create a community of practice by researching a different learning theory to share information with class (collective learning) Bruner – discovery learning through the use of an internet search Vygotsky – peer to peer learning
  • #21 20 minutes to collect data and present (10 minutes extra if needed) 20 minutes to teach each other
