The Arab Spring And Its Aftermath Essay
The Arab Spring and its aftermath have become one of the most influential events of the twenty
first century. The series of revolutions reshaped several governments within the Middle East by
outing long reigning dictators that the people had become progressively frustrated with. The Arab
Spring both aligns with and contradicts several previous waves of revolution and is truly a twenty
first century conflict because of the role that modern technology played. Through studying the
Arab Spring, political scientists have been given a glimpse into what future revolutions might
look like, especially in regards to the expanding role of social media. In order for revolutions to
occur, there must be several necessary structural conditions, which were all present during the Arab
Spring. First, there must be fiscal strain, which is often caused by demographic changes within the
region (Goldstone 2014). Many Middle Eastern countries during the early twenty first century
experienced a youth bulge due to policies encouraging childbirth (Amar and Prashad 2013) . This
new wave of young people, especially the young men, were unable to find jobs and the subsequent
financial stability (Amar and Prashad 2013). This led to dissatisfaction with the government and
frustration that would soon turn into anger once a specific queue, according to relative deprivation
theory, ignited the group (Gurr 1970). This queue was in the form of the self immolation of a fruit
seller named Mohamed Bouazizi

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Competitive Competition
Competitive markets means strong rivalry amongst firms or companies which are trying to
achieve and outdo each others by increasing their market share, profits and sales by using the
methods of marketing mix which includes prices, products, distributions and promotions. It can
also be described as a spectrum of a purely monopolistic, in which a company is the sole producer
of good and services, this means that a sufficient number of firms or companies are relatively
equal to their sizes, which eventually none of the big competitive companies can influence the
market in any way. The characteristic of fundamental in competitive market is that the existence
of the various number of their buyers and sellers it the market they operate. This will also meant
that the vaster the number of buyers and seller that are presence, the lesser the power of
bargaining that the buyers and sellers will have. Competitive competition demonstrates their
characteristic by having the perfect knowledge that will help minimizing the risk and to limit the

China and Tibet
The issue is about China and Tibet, Should or shouldn t Tibetan Exile Refugees change their
peaceful approach toward China by appealing to sympathetic nations to militarily force China
out of Tibet? During the 1600 s Tibet was a very powerful country and the Dalai Lama was
introduced as the leader or Tibet. China controlled Tibet in the Early 1700 s. The British arrived
in Tibet in 1904 to help them overcome China. They signed a treaty, and set up trading posts.
China controlled Tibet until 1911, when Tibet kicked out Chinese troops. Even after 1911, China

Scout Meeting Narrative
It was early September, the beginning of the fall season. The scorching summer sun had long
been gone and the golden maple leaves had already begun to tumble to the ground. A crisp chill
strikes the evening with a faint tap as I exit my mom s shimmering silver minivan and make my
way into the all too familiar elementary school. It was only a couple days before when my good
friend, Chloe, met me outside of our conjoined classrooms to suggest I attend a girl scout meeting.
At the time, I absolutely dreaded meeting new people. I was quite shy and avoided human
interaction as best as possible, with the exception of the people whom I already knew before hand
and was comfortable conversing with them during the 30 minute recesses. It ll be a lot of fun, she...

spent in silence as we waited for the tawny bus, thinking the only thing I was doing on Thursday
night was reading another R.L. Stine book. Yet, here I was in the airless wind, with my mother
walking close behind, about to enter Central Elementary School for the second time today. Without
the usual sea of students crowding the halls, the school felt empty and barren. Voices could be
heard deeper down the hall, sounds of laughter from both children and adults. Light illuminated the

Healthy Family System Analysis
The purpose of this essay is for this Author to analyze theories of systems and practical application
of having a vision of a healthy system and those which impacts a healthy system. Background This
author feels that Healthy Congregation system applies to the Church and Family life, because all

The Impacts of Workaholism
In no other time in history have we witnessed such a drive towards overwork. Some may get a
sense of satisfaction from it, but many become less happy and have to suffer much. With the
appearance of this phenomenon, the term workaholic has been coined to describe these people.
Since it was familiar to men, more research have been done to this popular issue workaholism,
and it has been proved that workaholism has great effects on human. This essay gives definitions
of workaholism and reveals its positive and negative impacts on our well being in terms of health,
personal relationship and society. In spite of them being two sides to workaholism, I am convinced
that its negative impacts far outweigh its positive ones.

Finally, all these factors will reduce enterprises cohesive force and productivity. Moreover, huge
costs have to be spent on recruiting, selecting and training new employees (Quick, Henley and
Quick, 2005, p.32).
Even though workaholism has some good influences, it exerts much more negative influences on
humans.
To start with, excessive work has great impacts on people s mental health. On the one hand, it
produces huge pressure on men and affects their moods seriously. Workaholics always suffer
from obsessive worry, mood fluctuations (Quick, Henley and Quick, 2005, p.31) and this will
lead to a poor quality of life. Worse of all, those who are uninterruptedly under pressure are likely
to get paranoid, manic or even schizophrenic (Quick, Henley and Quick, 2005, p.36). On the other
hand, researchers have showed that mental disorder caused by overwork has a direct connection
with pregnancy and miscarriage. Hamilton and Denniss believe that long working hours reduce the
possibility of pregnancy and increase the risk of preterm births, also it effects infants growth (2005,
p.15). It is rueful and ridiculous that mother s addiction to work threatens babies lives.
Next, the negative physical health ramifications are caused by overwork. It enhances the
probability of having serious and fatal disease. Evidence has reflected that employees who work
overly, compared with those who work regularly, are more likely

Film Analysis Of Vertigo
Vertigo (1958) is frequently considered director Alfred Hitchcock s greatest film. It is the story
of a melancholy police officer, Scottie (James Stewart), forced to retire after his vertigo caused a
tragic accident. A friend, Gavin, tries to capitalize on Scottie s skills, so Gavin asks Scottie to
follow his unstable wife. By accident, Scottie falls in lovewith this wonderfully mysterious woman,
Madeleine. Scottie does not realize, however, that he is falling prey to an elaborate scheme set
up by Gavin which will make it appear like Madeleine kills herself. Scottie was unable to get to the
wife before she jumped out a window because of his vertigo.
Unaware of the scheme, Scottie feels responsible for the death and falls into a terrible mental
state. His friend, Midge, tries to pull him out of it, but to no avail. Finally, one day, Scottie spots
a woman that looks like Madeleine on the street. He follows her to her home and asks too many
questions. She knows who he is, but she can t reveal that he was just a pawn in a terrible crime.
Scottie is relentless and finally the look alike, Judy (Kim Novak) agrees to date him. Scottie
proceeds to control every aspect of Judy so that she looks like Madeleine. He changes her hair and
clothes. He falls in love with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hitchcock s direction was always top notch, but here, he created a new technique to demonstrate
Scottie s vertigo that is truly mesmerizing. Every shot is thoughtful and well crafted. Jimmy
Stewart plays the obsessed Scottie so well that it is actually disturbing. And though Kim Novak
was, at times, criticized for a stiff performance, more people now realize that she embodies the
terrified, abused, accessory to murder perfectly. The performance of Gavin is the weakest of the
film, but he is not the focus, so it does not affect the overall affect much. Holistically, the
performances and directorial choices are

The Role Of Evil In Euripides Medea
The world created in Euripides Medea is one where there is an irrefutable presence of evil and
suffering; darkness pervades the play at many points but whether or not it is the dominant
characteristic of the play is less certain. Although Medea is ultimately triumphant in her quest for
vengeance on Jason, the idea that evil itself is triumphant in the overall sense of the play at its
conclusion is much less true. The evidence for this is that despite the turmoil of the play, there is
still an obvious existence of love, compassion and grief; emotions which are polarised against evil.
Furthermore, while Medeaherself is the primary instigator of the most tragic event in the play, she
could also be described as an innocent victim, for it was... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The suffering of innocents take place in the form of Medea s children, where she murders them out
of her own selfish desire for revenge. This was the incident that ultimately polarised both the
audience and the chorus against her; the children were innocent in all sense and their murder
was a crime that Medea herself described as terrible . Yet the sense of injustice aligned with
these actions permeates the entire play to the extent that these murders may in fact simply have
been the materialisation of the generally chaotic and depressing world created by Euripides. The
children s death were but one of many examples of innocence suffering; some would perceive
Glauce and Creon as innocent, but furthermore and most significantly, Medea herself may be a
victim of this dark world. At the opening of the play, the Nurse explained that Jason has betrayed
my lady [Medea] and his own children for a princess bed [18], causing Medea to feel the sting of
injustice [110]. In Medea s acrimonious feministic speech she highlighted the suffering of women
as a result of the underlying sexism Greece. The ancient Greek societal paradigm of the ideal
woman was one where they were force to take a master to play the tyrant with [their] bodies []; a
concept that modern audiences would recognise as appalling. Aside from these specific examples
of where innocents suffer, Euripides provided several comments that essentially prove that he
intended for the world of Medea to be somewhat depressing. The seemingly pessimistic statement
given by the messenger (who existed purely to provide commentary on the play) When fortune s
tide flows towards him, one man may surpass another in prosperity, but you should not call him
happy [1231] suggests that Euripides may have been deliberately attempting to remove happiness
from the play; suffering of

Spring Break
Spring break is supposed to be a great time from the second it begins, until the second it ends.
Now there is always that boring time it takes to get to wherever you may be going no matter how
far that may be it is always the least fun of the entire vacation. My last spring break s car ride
happened to be the least fun by far of any trip I have taken up to this point in my life. It all started
out not so good before I had even left to pick up my buddies who were riding with me for the trip.
My good friend Josh had came to stay with me the night before we left for Panama City Beach,
Florida. We both figured this would save us some time the next day since I already had to pick up

There were points where we were only going 20 mph on the interstate. We braved the storm and did
not stop once. Our minds were too set on the hopes and dreams of spring break. After making it
through two states worth of driving 20 mph in a snow storm we were a bit behind schedule in
meeting our friend at his place in Florida. However, we were still much ahead of the rest of our
group who had just left Indiana. As we entered the sunshine state we called Jake to see where we
needed to go from there. He gave us some directions as he took shots in a bar which made us
skeptical as to how accurate his directions were in the first place. Although we were unsure of
the accuracy of the directions given to us by our drunken friend we took the roads we were told
to take. Unfortunately, our fears came to life when we wound up 2 hours in the complete
opposite direction of where we needed to be. At this point, it was 4 a.m. Jake was sure he had
told us to go the other way of what he had told us. Even to this day he swears he told us the right
way we just turned the opposite direction. Our only option was to turn around and drive back 4
hours the way we came to get to his house to get some shut eye. We made great time getting back
on track and arriving in Jakes town. It was now around 7 am in Florida and Jake had stopped
answering his phone an hour ago. We had no idea where to go now that we were actually in the

Cleopatra and Her Relationship with Roman Caesars
Stacy Schiff is a remarkable writer and a historian. She has a Pulitzer Prize to prove it, and she is
also a guest writer for the New York Times and various newspapers. Her latest work is Cleopatra: A
Life. Schiff tells how Cleopatra was a very remarkable woman. Even after Octavian, Cleopatra was
known as the wicked women in the world.
Schiff tells much about Cleopatra s life involving Mark Antony and Julius Caesar. Schiff ensures us
that Cleopatra had one of the top educations from Alexandria. Caesar did not only stay in Egypt for
Cleopatra s seductress ways, however Caesar wanted to get rein over his enemies. When Caesar
was murdered, by a group of schemers, in the Roman Senate, his adopted great nephew Gaius
Octavius was his only heir. Mark Antony thought he was heir to the Roman Empire but however,
Caesar had different plans.
Janet Suzman tells the story of how Shakespeare wrote the play about Cleopatra and Mark
Antony. Suzman says Shakespeare s Antony and Cleopatra is a horrific story of a formally
mighty conqueror who is infatuated with the Queen of Egypt. Antony was so obsessed with
Cleopatra and how she led him to his death. (Draycott, 38 44) Suzman said that Cleopatra and
Antony had a horrible love story. Schiff tells the story of Cleopatra and Antony very similar to
Suzman. However, Cleopatra and Antony s relationship had its problems. Schiff believed that
Antony and Cleopatra had much in common. They were both left out of Caesar s will. Schiff also

importance can hardly be overemphasized. It is a process of transmitting information, ideas,
thoughts, opinions and plans between various parts of an organization.

Portfolio Project Management
Analysis and Synthesis of Prior Research Analysis and Synthesis of Prior Research
The companies that efficiently solve their projects issues and portfolio concerns will differentiate
themselves from their competition. The projects that companies work to complete with the many
different project methodologies demonstrate where the business is now, and the portfolio of
projects of the organization demonstrate where the organization is headed. To effectively manage
the tremendous number of projects that leaders face today in their organizations, they look to
methods and processes that aid them in effectively managing a group of projects. The method used
to help in this endeavor is Portfolio Project Management (PPM).

Portfolio board managers or project managers that have the responsibility of leading an organization
to their intended goals and objectives must perform an analysis of the current state or performance
of the organization, an analysis of the gaps between the current state and the intended state while
making the necessary adjustments and corrective actions (Morris Pinto, 2007).
Project Portfolio
According to Morris and Pinto (2007) a project portfolio is comprised of a group of projects that
are supervised and managed based on the sponsorship of a particular department within the
company. The different projects within a portfolio will compete for scarce resources such as labor,
finances, and time. At the very top of a project based organization is portfolio management, which
contains all of the projects within the organization. Those organizational projects are prioritized,
based on strategic global initiatives and business objectives. They are different from projects
assigned to project managers, as they must be aligned with strategic initiatives. Because projects
support several business objectives across many different lines of business within the organization,
oftentimes these projects are interrelated and are strategic.

Privatization of Russian Industries
For some, the privatization of Russian industry has been one of the great success stories of Russia
s painful economic transition: quick, firm and radical action was taken to shift the great bulk of
Russian industry out of state hands, thereby laying the basis for a radical restructuring of
enterprises and improvements in their performance. Others see privatization as a best a failure, at
worst a catastrophe. Not surprisingly those opposed to the market and economic reform as a whole
sharethis view. But many commentators who see themselves as supporters of reform find plenty in
Russian privatization to criticize: the process led to the transfer of ownershipto inappropriate people

Collective ownership derives either from a natural alliance between managers and rank and file
employees, probably based on Soviet traditions of paternalism and the В‘social contract , or from
the need of managers to pander to workers who control a majority of voting rights at shareholder
meetings. Although some observers might find a collective ownership outcome desirable, on the
grounds that it provides for workplace democracy and high incentive work habits, reform oriented
commentators generally find it a form of ownership likely to lead to the maintenance of excessively
high levels of underemployed staff and an over concentration on consumption at the expense of
investment.
The management ownership outcome derives from the ability of management to totally dominate
divided, demoralized or indifferent rank and file employees. The argument that they do so by
bribing employees with promises of secure employment and the maintenance of social welfare
provisions is essentially the same as that presented in the previous paragraph on collective

The Fall Of Feudalism And The Rise Of Capitalism
The fall of feudalism in the 12th century eventually led to the rise of capitalism. To get there, the
first thing needed was a change in thinking. This began with the scientific revolution, and led to the
Enlightenment in the 18th century. The Enlightenment, also known as the Age of Reason, was
highlighted by individualism, reason, and skepticism. Skepticism caused people to denounce divine
right of kings, thus moving from monarchies to democracies. This desire for knowledge coupled
with the scientific revolution resulted in new manufacturing inventions that made the production
process more efficient and advanced society, this is referred to as the industrial revolution. These
major events altered almost every feature of daily life for... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The means of production are everything needed for manufacturing. This includes the factories,
the labor force, and the raw materials. Marx also uses the term social relations of production,
which is the social relationships people enter by being a part of the means of production. The
mode of production ¬¬is the combination of social class and the social relations of production
of that period in time. These both establish life in general: the political and social institutions,
culture, and ideologies. Marx believed that you are born into societies where the social relations
of production are already predetermined. This means as a result, things like a person s knowledge,
ideologies, and beliefs are determined by their place in class. There are also other features of
society that are an outcome of the social relations of productions. Things like products and
institutions come out the need for them. Educational institutions come from the need for a higher
educated population. Products come from the need of a product to solve a certain problem.
It is no secret that Marx and Engels believed capitalism was detrimental for society. They
believed capitalism caused alienation feeling of being separated from the world and society you
live in in its workers. Marx distinguished four types of alienation: (1) alienation of the worker from
the product of his work, (2) alienation of the

Pediatric Nurse Advantages And Disadvantages
The things I know about being a pediatric nurse is they are nurses that deal with children. They
care for children all the way through their adolescents. To become one you are required to get
your registered nurse license. You can get your associates or you can earn your bachelor s

The Physics of Bridges Essay
Physics of Bridges
The physics behind bridges is more complex than first meets the eye. To assure that a bridge is well
supported many concepts must be understood and used in the correct manner.
What is a bridge?
A bridge is a complex structure allowing passage across an obstacle: a structure that is built above
and across a river, road, or other obstacle to allow people or vehicles to cross it.
Bridge forms
There are four major forms of bridges: beam, truss, arch, and suspension.
A beam bridge, also known as a girder bridge, contains a horizontal beam supported by 2 piers at
each end. The beam pushes down on the piers, which weakens the overall bridge. These simplistic
bridges are the shortest of all types due to the lack of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Above the bridge, a structure of the same pattern is placed to support the bridge from above. At
the ends of each bridge, there are two similar trusses. This ensures that the bridge stays together,
even when large amounts of weights cross it. By allowing more weight to cross, these bridges
can be longer than beam bridges (they can be up to 500 meters). Forces are the focus of these
bridges; each bar exerts a pushing or pulling force without bending. These forces allows the
lightweight bridge to stay sturdy without collapsing as each steel bar pushes or pulls in the correct
direction. Due to this stability, these bridges are often found over places with unstable ground.
Anything from cars to trains are able to cross over these types of bridges without issues.
There are 4 major concepts in building a bridge that builders must pay attention to; span type,
material of the bridge, the placement of the travel surface in relation to the structure, and the form
of the bridge. When considering all of these concepts, builders can effectively construct a safe and
sturdy bridge.
Newton s 3rd Law
One of the most vital concepts in bridge construction is Newton s 3rd Law. This law states: For
every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

The shortcoming is forcing Microsoft management to plan for a way to make up for the loss in
profit (Schenker, 2007, p.1). Electronic business is an external trend that has developed rapidly
changing the way in which businesses market their products. These changes have influenced
Microsoft s management to make plans to pursue the advanced abilities the Internet has created.
Microsoft s current goal is to achieve acknowledgement in the business arena of advertisement via
the online market. Microsoft (MSFT) aims to stitch together its software, ad serving, and media
properties to become a formidable online power with many of the marketing pieces that advertisers
look for as they embark on Internet ad campaigns (Schenker, 2007, p.1). Microsoft is currently
aligning a strategic and management plan which will appeal to its customers by using their
reputable name and powerhouse infrastructure. Innovation continues to affect different planning
functions of Microsoft. Innovation is defined as the introduction of new things or methods
(Dictionary, 2008). Therefore, planning must be calculated in a strategic, tactical and operational
manner in order to be effective. With strategic planning, Microsoft must think of long term goals
and strategies for its corporation (Bateman Snell, 2007). Tactical planning is developed to specify
goals and plans that target a majority of the corporation and its consumers (Bateman Snell, 2007).

There can be a number of reasons for a company to go public or private. There are benefits, as

firms decide to go private, they are no longer listed on any stock exchange market. The pressure
of keeping accounting regularity and reporting to the public is no longer an issue. Instead, firms
can be more flexible to reorganize the business profile as well as the management team. In many
cases, shareholders and board members receive very rewarding financial benefits from this
transaction. However, in some situations, public firms do not have a choice in the matter, as is the

Hasidic Culture
When you enter the town of Lakewood, New Jersey, you will see stores that have signs in
Yiddish and Hebrew, the men wear long beards and long black clothing, while the women wear
wigs or scarves and modest, yet fashionable, clothing. The fast restaurants serve kosher food, one
will also see special Hasidic school buses carry loads of noisy children, and other special buses
carry Hasidic men to school and prayer. This is a culture unto its own that is right here in the back
drop of the New JerseyShore, locally just called the Jersey Shore .
This once strong Jersey Shore community is now adorned with traditional Hasidic Jew, their
customs and culture are everywhere and they do not take well to intruders (visitors). The adjoining

Racial Profiling
Racial Profiling has been around for many decades, but over the past few years it has gotten even
worse. It has gotten to the point where children are supposed to be the most comfortable and open.
Also, it has gotten to the point where even children s sports games are having a racial issue.
Children shouldn t feel like outsiders, just because of the color of their skin. Lastly, they shouldn t
they should stop doing what they love the most just because someone out there is making a racial
or racist statement.
There are two sides to every issue in life. There are people that are for that issue and there are
people that are against it. The issue that I am trying to prove today is how exactly did basketball
become the metaphor for racial profiling in the Kentucky Community? In Us Against The World
the kids that were being transferred to Cordia High School were black and they came there for
basketball. That actually wasn t the case for most of them. Most of the boys that transferred was to
leave a bad situation back in New York.
For example, Ramon Mercado aka Momo moved to Kentucky to attend Cordia because he was
trying to get away from a profile that he didn t that he didn t fit back home. But he didn t know
that he would be but right back into another profile when he started playing basketball for
Cordia. Momo used to live in the lower Manhattan of New York, where his profile was either sale

Suicide In Virgil Essay
In her Marlowe s Virgil: Dido Queen of Carthage, Roma Gill argues that Marlowe changed the
character of Dido into a more sound character by making the suicide scene in which Dido has a
soliloquy more heroic. She says that Dido becomes more resourceful and proud after the storm
scenes after which she disappears from the plot for a while. It is, thus, disappointing for Gill to see
Didoburn the relics of Aeneas, which constitutes an unnecessary melodrama according to Gill.
What Gill calls a melodrama appears to me as an act to monumentalize both Aeneas and Dido s
love for him. To me, Dido herself regards her death as a monument that will spread Aeneas fame
in the way that Dido wants him to be known, that is, not as a brave soldier he has come to be
known as, but as a ruthless lover who has devastated a devoted queen.
Suicide is an act during which you have the fullest activeness and after which you fall to
complete passivity. Thus, through her suicide, Dido falls from being a subject to being an object.
Then, as she exercises her fullest potential as a subject, Dido creates two objects: one is the object
of herself as a dead queen, and the other is the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Reasons for the failure of 1848- 1849 revolutions in...
The revolutionaries in Italy had longstanding grievances, some were nationalists and some were
liberals. Despite all having different ideas and aims they all resoundingly agreed that Italy needed
change. The hopes of the various revolutionary groups had been raised by the election of Pope Pius
and Charles Albert the King of Piedmont Sardinia. However, their hopes and resulting revolutions
were crushed due to many concerning factors. A crushing factor of the failure of the revolutions
was the trouncing of the Piedmontese army at both the battles of Novara and Custoza. These
defeats were resounding as the Piedmontese army had no chance against the might of the super
power that was the Austrian army. The Piedmontese army met the forces of... Show more content on

Radetsky s army was not just huge but well led, organised and well equipped. Under such
authoritative and commanding leadership the Piedmontese army was soon defeated. Radetsky s
army in addition also crushed the revolts in Venice and Tuscany (who had declared themselves as
republics) and who had previously resisted Austrian siege warfare until February 1849. However, it
was not just the power of Austria and it s army which contributed to the failures of the revolutions,
but the revolutionaries also contributed to their own downfall. Despite wanting change in Italy,
there were numerous divisions between the revolutionaries such as the liberals and nationalists
having different aims and incompetence in the face of Austria. Such divisions not only affected
morale but had physical impacts such as in the battle of Custoza where the Papal States and Naples
withdrew their troops in favour of their own interests. Furthermore, the divisions between the
revolutionaries were accentuated when the Roman Republic was declared in favour of the Pope
being the leader of the Papal States. The previous Pope, Pius IX had fled to Naples after not being
able to declare war on a fellow Catholic state and continued to work with a constitutional
government until his flight from Rome. The republic was led by Mazzini who took care of all

McTeigue uses characterisation and cinematic techniques including camera angles, light and
music to convey this theme. The government uses oppression by establishing ridiculous laws
that force the people to fear the world without them. These laws include curfews, rethatching

throughout their actions and behaviour, Fear is also instilled through the lies dispelled through
media sources that demonise undesirables such as Muslims, blacks and homosexuals. Example
when Chancellor Sutler uses the media for his own gain Lewis Prothero carries out orders of the

Pertaining to the tremendous growth of digitalization in the past decade in areas of healthcare,

DiVI Diversity and Visually Interactive Method
Aimed at reducing the semantic gap in CBIR systems, the Diversity and Visually Interactive
(DiVI) method [2] combines diversity and visual data mining techniques to improve retrieval
efficiency. It includes the user into the processing path, to interactively distort the search space in
the image description process, forcing the elements that he/she considers more similar to be closer
and elements considered less similar to be farther in the search space. Thus, DiVI allows inducing
in the space the intuitive perception of similarity lacking in the numeric evaluation of the distance
function. It also allows the user to express his/her diversity preference for a query, reducing the
effort to analyze the result when too many similar images are returned.

Urban Suburbs In California
California Suburbs California is a state with a lifestyle and identity all its own. One factor
contributing to California s unique singularity is the lay out of its cities and suburban areas. Unlike
many metropolitan areas, which built up, California spread out, creating a commuter culture of
loosely connected communities surrounding larger cities and urban areas. The popularization of
suburban neighborhoods gained prominence and momentum in the 1950s, following World War
II,and the influx of veterans returning home and starting families. That decade s economic growth,
attributed to government spending on the construction of interstate highways and schools, the
distribution of veterans benefits and the increase in military spending, left Californians with high
wages and low unemployment and inflation (The 1950s). These circumstances, combined with the
ingenuity of new developers regarding the layout, construction and affordability of economically
built homes, spear headed the creation of suburban communities in California. With thousands of
new homes being built and purchased and hundreds of people... Show more content on

In less than 10 months, over 7,400 houses were sold (Waldie). The availability of the homes and
the ease in which individuals could receive loans enticed hundreds of first time home buyers. For
many banks, the only prerequisites for qualifying for a loan was that they had a steady job and
their promise to keep up with the mortgage payments (Waldie). The location of the suburban
communities was also appealing to Californians. The distance of homes from the congestion of the
cities created a commuter based lifestyle, supported by the railroads and the influx and popularity
of new automobiles (Starr). Many people preferred the separation of the communities from the
hustle and bustle of the overcrowded cities and they enjoyed the remote locations of suburbs and

Into The Pinecone Essay
Into The Pinecone When one looks at the East Carolina University campus it is not hard to pick
which building has been delegated to the art students. From the outside Jenkins Fine Art Center
would spark anyone s curiosity. It is a building that resembles a geometric pinecone with
windows that scale a portion of the facets. Some of the windows have curtains, but others offer a
glimpse into classrooms and artists studios; where people can be seen striving to develop the
next revolutionary art piece. In front of the building sprawls a grassy field littered haphazardly
with large abstract sculptures and accent trees. The back of the building is somewhat of a visual
juxtaposition to the front. Commonly referred to as the yard, it is a courtyard surrounded by a
tall brick wall and an iron gate, making one question weather it was built to keep the normal
people out, or the crazy people in. Entering the building and walking down the white cinder block
hallway, one could easily forget that they are in a building specifically built for creative minds.
The hallway resembles that of any other campus building aside from the dusty footprints leading
the way to the ceramics room, the sounds of a metals foundry, and occasionally the reached smell
of burning acrylic emanating from the distance. Because the building was built in two parts, with a
few years in between, the room numbering is not always easy to navigate. However, being an art
major I have become familiarized with the system

My Love For Music
Life as a teenager today can be very stressful and sometimes intense. One must reflect to outweigh
these crazy times with special moments and special people. Being a team member in many Pine
Richland High School Band programs has allowed me to dive in and move forward sharing my
love for music and touching the lives of others.
My involvement in the band has led me out of my comfort zone, and allowed me to be a strong
and confident leader. Through my achievement of various leadership roles and opportunities in
my school and community, I attribute my love for helping people and love of music in making
me a unique person. Music has given me the ability to shout, plunk out keys on the piano, or
play crazy high notes on my flute, and not be afraid of what others may think. My unique,
responsible, caring leadership attributes and love for music are reflected as I stand at the top of a
metal ladder, shouting across the football field. As one of my band s Drum Majors, I am
responsible for leading our 266 Pine Richland marching band. On the first day of band camp, I was
terrified no one would listen to me, I would not remember what to do, or I simply wouldn t be
good enough. However, soon I realized I deserved my position and would help our band be its
best. I gave it my all, and sooner than later, my shouts could be heard across the field and my
whistle pierced the air. The dedication, determination, knowledge, and love of music has helped me
express who I am and strive to be, and

Positive And Negative Ramification Of The Papacy
Introduction
Traditions are powerful. Take for example the Catholic understanding of Saint Peter as the first
pope. This tradition is established in the scriptural passage from Matthew 16:18, which states,
And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall
not prevail against it (ESV). Additionally, the tradition is further substantiated by his physical
presence, as most scholars agree that Peter did visit Rome, and that there is at least a very high
probability that he died there. In fact, Peter is considered the founder and bishop of the church in
Rome because his authority was recognized among the early churches. The Catholic Church
believes Peter s authority was handed down to his successors. Consequently, Roman Catholics
worldwide today are subject to Pope Francis s authority. The Catholic Church s stance on papal
authority is debatable, however this does not negate his power ... Show more content on

Throughout the rise of the papacy, there are several examples of positive and negative
ramification. The positive development is seen in the advancement of Christianity throughout the
empire. However, the power of the papacy grew not simply because more people were Christian,
but because the kind of Christianity they followed looked more and more to Rome for direction.
Additionally, a series of papal actions, culminating with Pope Leo III crowning Charlemagne as
emperor, brought a period known as the Carolingian Renaissance where the methods of theological
exploration flourish and all writings were preserved through the monks tireless copying production.
Finally, bishops were able to protest unjustified rulings against them to the court of appeals in

Darwinists and Dissenters
Did God create the universe or did the universe create itself? Ever since Charles Darwin s On the
Origin of Species was first published in 1859, the debate between those that believe life was
brought into existence by supernatural means and those who believe in Darwin s theory of
evolution has been fierce. Each side presents compelling arguments that may sway any uneducated
reader to agree with their position based solely on the confidence they portray in their writings.
However, because of the vastness and strength of evidence presented by the proponents of modern
evolutionary theory, Darwinists have proved their point much greater than those who argue in favor
of Intelligent Design. In this essay, four arguments will be presented; two... Show more content on

In other words, the complexity of life and its organisms could not have arisen slowly over time
because if one part of a whole is not present then it cannot function, survive, and therefore possess
the ability to reproduce and evolve. Behe explains this theory using a mousetrap as an example. He
writes that if any one of the components of the mousetrap (the base, hammer, spring, catch, or
holding bar) is removed, then the trap does not function and that because the mousetrap is
necessarily composed of several parts, it is irreducibly complex... thus [proving] irreducibly
complex systems exist (5). Although Behe s theory seems reasonable, Jerry Coyne points out in his
book, Why Evolution Is True, that the... designs [observed] make sense only if they evolved from
features of earlier ancestors and that an Intelligent Designer would not have made it a motive to
have organisms appear as though they evolved (Coyne, 85). Coyne s critique of Behe s theory of
irreducible complexity further solidifies the Darwinists claim, especially in regard to his point that

Psycho Parlor Scene Analysis
In the parlor scene from Psycho, Norman invited Marion to his parlor and shows her eating
sandwiches and drinking milk. One recognizable camera technique used in the scenes is that we
continually see Marion from the frontal view, whereas with Norman we only see him from side.
In doing this, the viewers are led to view Norman in a bad light as it shows his potential for evil.
It gives him a spooky persona. Also the use of shadow that covers his face, suggests to viewers his
split personality as a character. It was meant for us to see Marion as a pure and wholesome
character, and Norman as creep and sadistic. Another notable technique in this scene is the use of
cross cutting between Marion and Norman. Throughout the whole scene the Norman and

The Norman Blumberg Housing Project
On May 3rd when I visited the site where the Norman Blumberg Housing Project once stood, the
air was hauntingly peaceful. I had read about the notoriety of the site during my research, how
over its existence it had become an area of concentrated poverty and crime, but on this day this
urban setting was quiet and calm. On the two square city blocks where a complex of apartment
buildings once ruled the landscape, only a single high riseremained among the unchecked wild
grass. However, even in the peacefulness of this day in Sharswood, the looming presence of the
infamous Norman Blumberg Apartments could still be felt. After standing for nearly six decades,

As a central part of this analysis, I will be discussing the role Blumberg Apartments played in the
deterioration of Sharswood. I will also be evoking the Pruitt Igoe myth as Blumberg Apartments
shares many similarities with the notorious Pruitt Igoe development. Finally, I will present and
discuss the future transformation of Sharswood as detailed by the Sharswood Blumberg
Neighborhood Transformation Plan. To judge the success or failure of Blumberg Apartments, we
must first analyze the project as it works to provide good housing. Good housing should not just
be regarded as a noun, it should also encompass housing as a verb. The commodity of the house as
a shelter is the noun. This commodity should provide a place for redressing. It should hold the
essential necessities that make for a comfortable and complete home. A place that balances privacy
and social interactions. As a verb, good housing should be a utility that works to enhance one s life
(Turner, 1972). It should be a stepping stone towards opportunity. For Blumberg Apartments in the
grand scheme, both of these facets can be regarded as failures. As the housing projects suffered
through massive deterioration, it failed as a commodity. Residents described how their housing had
stairwells that reeked of urine and dirty diapers, constantly breaking appliances and elevators, and
the frequent sounds of gunshots (Colaneri, 2016). Furthermore, units were found to not meet
minimum size standards and

The Pros And Cons Of The Federal Prison System
In the United States of America there are currently two prison systems in place; the Federal prison
system, and the State prison system. Every state in the U.S. has its own Department of Corrections,
which is tasked with handling crimes committed at the state level (Allen, 2017). The state where the
crime occurred has jurisdiction over the individual that committed the crime. An individual, whom
has committed a crime within a state s jurisdiction that results in a long sentence, is sent to the state
prisonsystem in that particular state (Allen, 2017). A long sentence encompasses a period of time
which exceeds a year, and a day; which is the length of time given to an individual convicted of a
felony crime. An individual convicted of a misdemeanor crime which is accompanied by a
sentencing length of less than a year, will serve their respective sentence in a jail. Once the
individual has received their sentence, they will go through an initial classification process (Allen,
Latessa, and Ponder, 2013). The purpose of the initial classification process is to identify the
individual s custody level, work assignment, and treatment. The initial classification process will
differentiate between those individuals that present different security risks, and supervision
concerns. Factors such as the individual s current offense, escape potential and prior criminal
history are factored in during the initial classification. Also, an individual s background attributes,
such as mental

BART Shooting Research Paper
Johannes Mehserle unintentionally shot and killed Oscar Grant. He was on duty as a train
officer for BART transportation and was on alert for those who had celebrated New Year s Eve.
The shooting occurred at the Fruitvale train station on January 1st, 2009. At the station, a fight
broke out in one of the trains and when the train stopped the fight started again outside of the
train at one of the stops. While they were fighting on the train the BART officers were called.
The officers came and arrested everyone that was in the fight. A guy named Oscar Grant was in
the fight and was also arrested (Meyer). While Grant was being arrested by Officer Mehserle, he
resisted the officer s attempts. Since Grant was resisting he was pushed onto the ground on his
stomach to be handcuffed. Johannes Mehserle was having trouble handcuffing Grant so the other
BART officers helped him. When Grant was on the ground Mehserle was going to tase him since
he would not stop resisting. When Mehserle thought he pulled out his TASER, he instead pulled
out his gun. Mehserle accidentally shot Grant with his gun since he thought he pulled out his
TASER (Bulwa). Mehserle used his gun instead of his TASER on accident. There could be many
reasons as to why he thought he pulled out his TASER instead of his gun. One reason is because
there are days when officers change their holsters and the items that are in their holsters. One day
the TASER could be on one side and the next day it could be on the other

Walmart s Supply Chain And Their Supplier Quality

Customer Service When a retail company as big a Walmart, those retailers are going to have some
flaws. The thing that sets companies apart is the fact of willing to try and fix those flaws. Walmart
had the case of customers complaining about customer service. Customers were unable to find
products that they wanted and that can lead to serious consequences (Lutz, 2013). Empty shelves

Raging Bull (1980) is not a so much a film about boxing but more of a story about a psychotically

The Bronx BullLaMotta. Masterfully he paints the picture of a beast whose sole drive is not

Achieving Success With The Arts
Achieving Success with the Arts
Sabrina M. Gemmer
Professor Bernard
Jefferson Community Technical College
The Arts and Us
Different forms of art have been around since the beginning of time. Art, comes from a cultures
specific way of life that has been passed down from generations. Art helps mold people into
creative individuals. It helps people stand out, be their own person, and increase their
imagination. Art surrounds us from the time we are young children to adults. As a young child,
the song your parent may use to sing you to sleep is a form of an art. The building blocks you
played with in kindergarten are a form of art. The dance you preformed for your cheerleading
squad in high school is an art. Art helps us learn ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The art programs contribute towards helping a student learn more successfully in the classroom and
prepare them for adulthood. Without these programs children will not receive the full artistic and
creative experience that will help them succeed as adults. Art education should be kept in schools
because they benefit students in an academic setting, teaching then study patterns, helping promote
creativity and growing into successful adults.
Not Making the Cut
Art Education Programs may not bring in enough money to help provide the programs with new
supplies and equipment. Even though there may be a shortage of money, the students should be
able to vote which program goes. The shortage of money made by art programs may have caused
schools to become annoyed with having to pay for new equipment yearly. Many schools believe
that by cutting arts programs money could be used for something else more important. An art show
may cost $3 to attend and only 10 people may show up. A sports event may cost $3 to attend, but
more than half the school attends, including parents, sports fans and coaches. In an online article,
Arsenault (2009) concludes that It s fair to generalize that athletics last longer. They are universally
recognized as representative of the school and generate revenue. We have had schools that have
totally cut athletic programs, although those tend to be the last things on the chopping block
because of sports

  • 2. The Arab Spring And Its Aftermath Essay The Arab Spring and its aftermath have become one of the most influential events of the twenty first century. The series of revolutions reshaped several governments within the Middle East by outing long reigning dictators that the people had become progressively frustrated with. The Arab Spring both aligns with and contradicts several previous waves of revolution and is truly a twenty first century conflict because of the role that modern technology played. Through studying the Arab Spring, political scientists have been given a glimpse into what future revolutions might look like, especially in regards to the expanding role of social media. In order for revolutions to occur, there must be several necessary structural conditions, which were all present during the Arab Spring. First, there must be fiscal strain, which is often caused by demographic changes within the region (Goldstone 2014). Many Middle Eastern countries during the early twenty first century experienced a youth bulge due to policies encouraging childbirth (Amar and Prashad 2013) . This new wave of young people, especially the young men, were unable to find jobs and the subsequent financial stability (Amar and Prashad 2013). This led to dissatisfaction with the government and frustration that would soon turn into anger once a specific queue, according to relative deprivation theory, ignited the group (Gurr 1970). This queue was in the form of the self immolation of a fruit seller named Mohamed Bouazizi ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Scout Meeting Narrative It was early September, the beginning of the fall season. The scorching summer sun had long been gone and the golden maple leaves had already begun to tumble to the ground. A crisp chill strikes the evening with a faint tap as I exit my mom s shimmering silver minivan and make my way into the all too familiar elementary school. It was only a couple days before when my good friend, Chloe, met me outside of our conjoined classrooms to suggest I attend a girl scout meeting. At the time, I absolutely dreaded meeting new people. I was quite shy and avoided human interaction as best as possible, with the exception of the people whom I already knew before hand and was comfortable conversing with them during the 30 minute recesses. Yet, here I was in the airless wind, with my mother walking close behind, about to enter Central Elementary School for the second time today. Finally, all these factors will reduce enterprises cohesive force and productivity. Moreover, huge costs have to be spent on recruiting, selecting and training new employees (Quick, Henley and Quick, 2005, p.32). Even though workaholism has some good influences, it exerts much more negative influences on humans. To start with, excessive work has great impacts on people s mental health. On the one hand, it produces huge pressure on men and affects their moods seriously. Workaholics always suffer from obsessive worry, mood fluctuations (Quick, Henley and Quick, 2005, p.31) and this will lead to a poor quality of life. Worse of all, those who are uninterruptedly under pressure are likely to get paranoid, manic or even schizophrenic (Quick, Henley and Quick, 2005, p.36). On the other hand, researchers have showed that mental disorder caused by overwork has a direct connection with pregnancy and miscarriage. Hamilton and Denniss believe that long working hours reduce the possibility of pregnancy and increase the risk of preterm births, also it effects infants growth (2005, p.15). • 8. Film Analysis Of Vertigo Vertigo (1958) is frequently considered director Alfred Hitchcock s greatest film. It is the story of a melancholy police officer, Scottie (James Stewart), forced to retire after his vertigo caused a tragic accident. A friend, Gavin, tries to capitalize on Scottie s skills, so Gavin asks Scottie to follow his unstable wife. By accident, Scottie falls in lovewith this wonderfully mysterious woman, Madeleine. Scottie does not realize, however, that he is falling prey to an elaborate scheme set up by Gavin which will make it appear like Madeleine kills herself. Scottie was unable to get to the wife before she jumped out a window because of his vertigo. Unaware of the scheme, Scottie feels responsible for the death and falls into a terrible mental state. His friend, Midge, tries to pull him out of it, but to no avail. Finally, one day, Scottie spots a woman that looks like Madeleine on the street. He follows her to her home and asks too many questions. She knows who he is, but she can t reveal that he was just a pawn in a terrible crime. • 9. The Role Of Evil In Euripides Medea The world created in Euripides Medea is one where there is an irrefutable presence of evil and suffering; darkness pervades the play at many points but whether or not it is the dominant characteristic of the play is less certain. Although Medea is ultimately triumphant in her quest for vengeance on Jason, the idea that evil itself is triumphant in the overall sense of the play at its conclusion is much less true. The evidence for this is that despite the turmoil of the play, there is still an obvious existence of love, compassion and grief; emotions which are polarised against evil. Furthermore, while Medeaherself is the primary instigator of the most tragic event in the play, she could also be described as an innocent victim, for it was... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The suffering of innocents take place in the form of Medea s children, where she murders them out of her own selfish desire for revenge. This was the incident that ultimately polarised both the audience and the chorus against her; the children were innocent in all sense and their murder was a crime that Medea herself described as terrible . Yet the sense of injustice aligned with these actions permeates the entire play to the extent that these murders may in fact simply have been the materialisation of the generally chaotic and depressing world created by Euripides. The children s death were but one of many examples of innocence suffering; some would perceive Glauce and Creon as innocent, but furthermore and most significantly, Medea herself may be a victim of this dark world. At the opening of the play, the Nurse explained that Jason has betrayed my lady [Medea] and his own children for a princess bed [18], causing Medea to feel the sting of injustice [110]. In Medea s acrimonious feministic speech she highlighted the suffering of women as a result of the underlying sexism Greece. The ancient Greek societal paradigm of the ideal woman was one where they were force to take a master to play the tyrant with [their] bodies []; a concept that modern audiences would recognise as appalling. Aside from these specific examples of where innocents suffer, Euripides provided several comments that essentially prove that he intended for the world of Medea to be somewhat depressing. The seemingly pessimistic statement given by the messenger (who existed purely to provide commentary on the play) When fortune s tide flows towards him, one man may surpass another in prosperity, but you should not call him happy [1231] suggests that Euripides may have been deliberately attempting to remove happiness from the play; suffering of ... After making it through two states worth of driving 20 mph in a snow storm we were a bit behind schedule in meeting our friend at his place in Florida. However, we were still much ahead of the rest of our group who had just left Indiana. As we entered the sunshine state we called Jake to see where we needed to go from there. He gave us some directions as he took shots in a bar which made us skeptical as to how accurate his directions were in the first place. Although we were unsure of the accuracy of the directions given to us by our drunken friend we took the roads we were told to take. Unfortunately, our fears came to life when we wound up 2 hours in the complete opposite direction of where we needed to be. At this point, it was 4 a.m. Jake was sure he had told us to go the other way of what he had told us. Even to this day he swears he told us the right way we just turned the opposite direction. Portfolio Project Management Analysis and Synthesis of Prior Research Analysis and Synthesis of Prior Research The companies that efficiently solve their projects issues and portfolio concerns will differentiate themselves from their competition. The projects that companies work to complete with the many different project methodologies demonstrate where the business is now, and the portfolio of projects of the organization demonstrate where the organization is headed. To effectively manage the tremendous number of projects that leaders face today in their organizations, they look to methods and processes that aid them in effectively managing a group of projects. The method used to help in this endeavor is Portfolio Project Management (PPM). Portfolio Management ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Portfolio board managers or project managers that have the responsibility of leading an organization to their intended goals and objectives must perform an analysis of the current state or performance of the organization, an analysis of the gaps between the current state and the intended state while making the necessary adjustments and corrective actions (Morris Pinto, 2007). Project Portfolio According to Morris and Pinto (2007) a project portfolio is comprised of a group of projects that are supervised and managed based on the sponsorship of a particular department within the company. The different projects within a portfolio will compete for scarce resources such as labor, finances, and time. At the very top of a project based organization is portfolio management, which contains all of the projects within the organization. Those organizational projects are prioritized, based on strategic global initiatives and business objectives. They are different from projects assigned to project managers, as they must be aligned with strategic initiatives. Because projects support several business objectives across many different lines of business within the organization, oftentimes these projects are interrelated and are strategic. Privatization of Russian Industries For some, the privatization of Russian industry has been one of the great success stories of Russia s painful economic transition: quick, firm and radical action was taken to shift the great bulk of Russian industry out of state hands, thereby laying the basis for a radical restructuring of enterprises and improvements in their performance. Others see privatization as a best a failure, at worst a catastrophe. Not surprisingly those opposed to the market and economic reform as a whole sharethis view. But many commentators who see themselves as supporters of reform find plenty in Russian privatization to criticize: the process led to the transfer of ownershipto inappropriate people and as a consequence no beneficial restructuring of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Collective ownership derives either from a natural alliance between managers and rank and file employees, probably based on Soviet traditions of paternalism and the В‘social contract , or from the need of managers to pander to workers who control a majority of voting rights at shareholder meetings. Although some observers might find a collective ownership outcome desirable, on the grounds that it provides for workplace democracy and high incentive work habits, reform oriented commentators generally find it a form of ownership likely to lead to the maintenance of excessively high levels of underemployed staff and an over concentration on consumption at the expense of investment. The management ownership outcome derives from the ability of management to totally dominate divided, demoralized or indifferent rank and file employees. The argument that they do so by bribing employees with promises of secure employment and the maintenance of social welfare provisions is essentially the same as that presented in the previous paragraph on collective ownership. However, there is an increasing awareness among commentators that any Soviet paternalism and coincidence of management worker interests that might have once existed have not survived the rigors of the transition and the self interest of managers. To get there, the first thing needed was a change in thinking. This began with the scientific revolution, and led to the Enlightenment in the 18th century. The Enlightenment, also known as the Age of Reason, was highlighted by individualism, reason, and skepticism. Skepticism caused people to denounce divine right of kings, thus moving from monarchies to democracies. • 22. The Physics of Bridges Essay Physics of Bridges The physics behind bridges is more complex than first meets the eye. To assure that a bridge is well supported many concepts must be understood and used in the correct manner. What is a bridge? A bridge is a complex structure allowing passage across an obstacle: a structure that is built above and across a river, road, or other obstacle to allow people or vehicles to cross it. Bridge forms There are four major forms of bridges: beam, truss, arch, and suspension. A beam bridge, also known as a girder bridge, contains a horizontal beam supported by 2 piers at each end. The beam pushes down on the piers, which weakens the overall bridge. These simplistic bridges are the shortest of all types due to the lack of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Above the bridge, a structure of the same pattern is placed to support the bridge from above. At the ends of each bridge, there are two similar trusses. This ensures that the bridge stays together, even when large amounts of weights cross it. By allowing more weight to cross, these bridges can be longer than beam bridges (they can be up to 500 meters). Forces are the focus of these bridges; each bar exerts a pushing or pulling force without bending. These forces allows the lightweight bridge to stay sturdy without collapsing as each steel bar pushes or pulls in the correct direction. Due to this stability, these bridges are often found over places with unstable ground. Anything from cars to trains are able to cross over these types of bridges without issues. There are 4 major concepts in building a bridge that builders must pay attention to; span type, material of the bridge, the placement of the travel surface in relation to the structure, and the form of the bridge. When considering all of these concepts, builders can effectively construct a safe and sturdy bridge. Newton s 3rd Law One of the most vital concepts in bridge construction is Newton s 3rd Law. Suicide In Virgil Essay In her Marlowe s Virgil: Dido Queen of Carthage, Roma Gill argues that Marlowe changed the character of Dido into a more sound character by making the suicide scene in which Dido has a soliloquy more heroic. She says that Dido becomes more resourceful and proud after the storm scenes after which she disappears from the plot for a while. It is, thus, disappointing for Gill to see Didoburn the relics of Aeneas, which constitutes an unnecessary melodrama according to Gill. What Gill calls a melodrama appears to me as an act to monumentalize both Aeneas and Dido s love for him. To me, Dido herself regards her death as a monument that will spread Aeneas fame in the way that Dido wants him to be known, that is, not as a brave soldier he has come to be known as, but as a ruthless lover who has devastated a devoted queen. Suicide is an act during which you have the fullest activeness and after which you fall to complete passivity. Thus, through her suicide, Dido falls from being a subject to being an object. • 39. Urban Suburbs In California California Suburbs California is a state with a lifestyle and identity all its own. One factor contributing to California s unique singularity is the lay out of its cities and suburban areas. Unlike many metropolitan areas, which built up, California spread out, creating a commuter culture of loosely connected communities surrounding larger cities and urban areas. The popularization of suburban neighborhoods gained prominence and momentum in the 1950s, following World War II,and the influx of veterans returning home and starting families. That decade s economic growth, attributed to government spending on the construction of interstate highways and schools, the distribution of veterans benefits and the increase in military spending, left Californians with high wages and low unemployment and inflation (The 1950s). These circumstances, combined with the ingenuity of new developers regarding the layout, construction and affordability of economically built homes, spear headed the creation of suburban communities in California. With thousands of new homes being built and purchased and hundreds of people... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In less than 10 months, over 7,400 houses were sold (Waldie). The location of the suburban communities was also appealing to Californians. The distance of homes from the congestion of the cities created a commuter based lifestyle, supported by the railroads and the influx and popularity of new automobiles (Starr). • 40. Into The Pinecone Essay Into The Pinecone When one looks at the East Carolina University campus it is not hard to pick which building has been delegated to the art students. From the outside Jenkins Fine Art Center would spark anyone s curiosity. It is a building that resembles a geometric pinecone with windows that scale a portion of the facets. Some of the windows have curtains, but others offer a glimpse into classrooms and artists studios; where people can be seen striving to develop the next revolutionary art piece. In front of the building sprawls a grassy field littered haphazardly with large abstract sculptures and accent trees. The back of the building is somewhat of a visual juxtaposition to the front. Commonly referred to as the yard, it is a courtyard surrounded by a tall brick wall and an iron gate, making one question weather it was built to keep the normal people out, or the crazy people in. Entering the building and walking down the white cinder block hallway, one could easily forget that they are in a building specifically built for creative minds. The hallway resembles that of any other campus building aside from the dusty footprints leading the way to the ceramics room, the sounds of a metals foundry, and occasionally the reached smell of burning acrylic emanating from the distance. Because the building was built in two parts, with a few years in between, the room numbering is not always easy to navigate. However, being an art major I have become familiarized with the system ... Being a team member in many Pine Richland High School Band programs has allowed me to dive in and move forward sharing my love for music and touching the lives of others. My involvement in the band has led me out of my comfort zone, and allowed me to be a strong and confident leader. Through my achievement of various leadership roles and opportunities in my school and community, I attribute my love for helping people and love of music in making me a unique person. Music has given me the ability to shout, plunk out keys on the piano, or play crazy high notes on my flute, and not be afraid of what others may think. My unique, responsible, caring leadership attributes and love for music are reflected as I stand at the top of a metal ladder, shouting across the football field. As one of my band s Drum Majors, I am responsible for leading our 266 Pine Richland marching band. On the first day of band camp, I was terrified no one would listen to me, I would not remember what to do, or I simply wouldn t be good enough. However, soon I realized I deserved my position and would help our band be its best. I gave it my all, and sooner than later, my shouts could be heard across the field and my whistle pierced the air. • 42. Positive And Negative Ramification Of The Papacy Introduction Traditions are powerful. Take for example the Catholic understanding of Saint Peter as the first pope. This tradition is established in the scriptural passage from Matthew 16:18, which states, And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it (ESV). Additionally, the tradition is further substantiated by his physical presence, as most scholars agree that Peter did visit Rome, and that there is at least a very high probability that he died there. In fact, Peter is considered the founder and bishop of the church in Rome because his authority was recognized among the early churches. The Catholic Church believes Peter s authority was handed down to his successors. Consequently, Roman Catholics worldwide today are subject to Pope Francis s authority. The Catholic Church s stance on papal authority is debatable, however this does not negate his power ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Additionally, a series of papal actions, culminating with Pope Leo III crowning Charlemagne as emperor, brought a period known as the Carolingian Renaissance where the methods of theological exploration flourish and all writings were preserved through the monks tireless copying production. Ever since Charles Darwin s On the Origin of Species was first published in 1859, the debate between those that believe life was brought into existence by supernatural means and those who believe in Darwin s theory of evolution has been fierce. Each side presents compelling arguments that may sway any uneducated reader to agree with their position based solely on the confidence they portray in their writings. However, because of the vastness and strength of evidence presented by the proponents of modern evolutionary theory, Darwinists have proved their point much greater than those who argue in favor of Intelligent Design. In other words, the complexity of life and its organisms could not have arisen slowly over time because if one part of a whole is not present then it cannot function, survive, and therefore possess the ability to reproduce and evolve. One recognizable camera technique used in the scenes is that we continually see Marion from the frontal view, whereas with Norman we only see him from side. Also the use of shadow that covers his face, suggests to viewers his split personality as a character. I will also be evoking the Pruitt Igoe myth as Blumberg Apartments shares many similarities with the notorious Pruitt Igoe development. Finally, I will present and discuss the future transformation of Sharswood as detailed by the Sharswood Blumberg Neighborhood Transformation Plan. To judge the success or failure of Blumberg Apartments, we must first analyze the project as it works to provide good housing. Good housing should not just be regarded as a noun, it should also encompass housing as a verb. The commodity of the house as a shelter is the noun. This commodity should provide a place for redressing. It should hold the essential necessities that make for a comfortable and complete home. A place that balances privacy and social interactions. As a verb, good housing should be a utility that works to enhance one s life (Turner, 1972). It should be a stepping stone towards opportunity. For Blumberg Apartments in the grand scheme, both of these facets can be regarded as failures. As the housing projects suffered through massive deterioration, it failed as a commodity. Residents described how their housing had stairwells that reeked of urine and dirty diapers, constantly breaking appliances and elevators, and the frequent sounds of gunshots (Colaneri, 2016). Furthermore, units were found to not meet minimum size standards and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 46. The Pros And Cons Of The Federal Prison System In the United States of America there are currently two prison systems in place; the Federal prison system, and the State prison system. Every state in the U.S. has its own Department of Corrections, which is tasked with handling crimes committed at the state level (Allen, 2017). The state where the crime occurred has jurisdiction over the individual that committed the crime. An individual, whom has committed a crime within a state s jurisdiction that results in a long sentence, is sent to the state prisonsystem in that particular state (Allen, 2017). A long sentence encompasses a period of time which exceeds a year, and a day; which is the length of time given to an individual convicted of a felony crime. An individual convicted of a misdemeanor crime which is accompanied by a sentencing length of less than a year, will serve their respective sentence in a jail. Once the individual has received their sentence, they will go through an initial classification process (Allen, Latessa, and Ponder, 2013). The purpose of the initial classification process is to identify the individual s custody level, work assignment, and treatment. The initial classification process will differentiate between those individuals that present different security risks, and supervision concerns. Factors such as the individual s current offense, escape potential and prior criminal history are factored in during the initial classification. He was on duty as a train officer for BART transportation and was on alert for those who had celebrated New Year s Eve. The shooting occurred at the Fruitvale train station on January 1st, 2009. At the station, a fight broke out in one of the trains and when the train stopped the fight started again outside of the train at one of the stops. While they were fighting on the train the BART officers were called. The officers came and arrested everyone that was in the fight. A guy named Oscar Grant was in the fight and was also arrested (Meyer). While Grant was being arrested by Officer Mehserle, he resisted the officer s attempts. Mehserle accidentally shot Grant with his gun since he thought he pulled out his TASER (Bulwa). Mehserle used his gun instead of his TASER on accident. There could be many reasons as to why he thought he pulled out his TASER instead of his gun. One reason is because there are days when officers change their holsters and the items that are in their holsters. One day the TASER could be on one side and the next day it could be on the other ...
