The spleen is an organ located in the left upper quadrant of the abdomen below the diaphragm and behind the stomach. It is part of the lymphatic system and produces lymphocytes that aid the immune system. The spleen removes old and damaged red blood cells, acts as a blood reservoir, and preserves iron during filtration. Diseases of the spleen include enlargement from infections, anemia, or cancer. Humans can live without a spleen if it is removed.
