The document discusses the simple past tense in English. It begins by explaining the etymological origins of the terms "pasado" and "simple" from Latin. It then defines verb tenses and notes that the simple past indicates actions completed in the past. Examples are given such as "Last night I asked for prawns with garlic." Key features are that the main verb is always past tense and indicates a specific past time. Applications include discussing habitual past actions and chronological sequences. Both regular and irregular verbs are discussed. Finally, examples of interrogative and negative simple past sentences are provided.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

The simple past
In Latin it is where we can find the etymological origin
of the simple past term:
-Pasado derives from the Latin verb "passare" which,
in turn, emanates from "passus", which means "put
one foot forward".
-Simple, on the other hand, emanates from "simple.“
Verb tenses constitute different ways of combining the
verbal aspect and grammatical tense into an
expression. According to the tense used, a sentence
has a certain temporal reference that indicates when
the action of the verb developed.
The simple past is one of these tenses, present in
different languages. The mention of the past refers to
actions that have already been carried out previously
(that is, that have already been completed).
Examples of sentences with verb in the past simple:
"Last night I asked for prawns with garlic“
"I already declared everything I know, official“
"One day I sang before five thousand people".

From the past.
It is the only grammatical tense that uses past verbs.
It is composed of simple elements, so it is only used in its
Composition the following formula:
S + V2 + C.
Where, S is equal to the Subject of the sentence; V2, is the Verb of
prayer
conjugated in the past; and, C, is the Complement of the sentence.
In the complement, expressions can optionally be used
that determine time, although the verb is the one that will

When we want to talk about an action that happened in the
past and ended in the past and we indicate the time in
which the action occurred (“last night” and “yesterday”).
Look at the following examples:
-Last night I played soccer
-I wrote a letter yesterday
We use it in four situations:
When we talk about an action that was usual in the past;
like when we talk about our childhood:
I played soccer all day long when I was a child
When my sister was younger, she wrote letters to my
parents.
To talk about facts connected in a chronological time
sequence in the past.
Last night I arrived home, cooked dinner and went directly
to bed.
We also use the simple past to talk about actions that
occurred and ended the past for a long period of time:
I studied at Pedagogical University for 5 years.
