2. PAST SIMPLE
It is a verb tense that is used to
describe actions that have happened in a
previous time and that have already
ended.
She cleaned her house.
.
I broke the window.
.
3. CHARACTERISTICS
• Indicates an action that was performed at a specific
time in the past.
• The main verb of the sentence is always in the past.
• It is the only grammatical time that uses verbs in the
past.
• It is composed of simple elements and the following
Formula is used in its composition:
Subject + verb in past + complement.
• In the complement, expressions that determine time
can be used optionally, although the verb determines
whether the sentence is in the past or not.
4. Types of verbs
Conjugation of verbs.
You must know the verbs to know their conjugation in the
past, but we must remember that the verbs are of 2 types
REGULAR: When they make their Past and Past
Participle by adding "ed" to their form in Present: Ex .: To Live
= Lived / To Walk = Walked / To Study = Studied.
IRREGULARS: When they make their Past and Past
Participle in the same or different way from the Present.
Ex .: To Sing - Sang - Sung / To Eat - Ate - Eaten.
5. Affirmative sentences
They are recognized because the main verb of the sentence is
in Past, and because it also complies with the following
formula: Subject + Past verb + Complement
. Ex .: The girl went to the cinema yesterday.
Where: The girl, (She) is the subject; went is the
past of the verb Go; and, to the cinema
everyday, is the complement.
6. Negative sentences
They are recognized by the use of "did not" between the
subject and the main verb of the sentence, bearing in mind
that: Did not: Used with all personal pronouns.
Examples:
Josue lived in Patanemo. Change to: Josue did not live in
Patanemo. We studied in U.C. Switch to: We did not study in U.C
Notice that when we used "did not", the main verb, which was in
Past, is changed to conjugated Present in its natural form without
the TO preposition.
7. Interrogative sentences
They are recognized because at the beginning of
the sentence the Auxiliary "Did" is written, then
the normal sentence in Present Simple
Affirming and at the end the question mark is
added, but we must bear in mind that: Did: It is
used with all personal pronouns .
Examples: Peter painted the house. Switch to:
Did Peter paint the house? They went to the
beach. Switch to: Did They go to the beach?
Notice that when we use "Did", the main verb
that was in Past, is changed to conjugated Present
in its natural form without the TO preposition.
8. Answer to interrogatory Sentences.
A sentence that begins with Auxiliary Did, only admits 2
types of answers: YES or NO. They should therefore follow the
following form:
If the answer is affirmative: Yes, S + Did. Where, Yes is equal to
Yes; Yes, it is the subject of the sentence; Did, is the assistant we
use to ask.
If the answer is negative: No, S + Did not Where, Not equivalent
to No; Yes, it is the subject of the sentence; Did not, is the
negative form of the auxiliary we use to ask.
Examples Did Nancy eat bread? Yes, She did / No, She did not.
Did they live in Caracas? Yes, They did / No, They did not.
