The past continuous is made from the past
tense of the verb be and the –ing form of a
verb.
1.- Indicates an action that was being carried out at a time in the past.
2.- It is characterized by the use of the past form of the Verb To Be as
an auxiliary, followed by the Main Verb in the Present Participle or
Gerund.
3.- In this grammatical tense the Verb To Be translates "Estar".
4.- It is composed of the following elements:
S + was/were + V1 + ing + C.
• S: Subject of the sentence
• was /were: is the past form of the Verb To Be
• V1: is the Verb of the sentence conjugated in the Present Participle or Gerund, that is,
it ends in "ing“
• C: is the Complement of the sentence.
5.- In the complement, expressions can be used optionally that
determine time, such as: yesterday, last night, last week, last year, etc.

• You must know the Past Conjugation of the Verb To Be that will serve
as "Auxiliary".
• As for the Main Verb, you just have to change it from its natural form
to Present Participle or Gerund (V1), adding "ing", taking into account
that:
1.- If the verb ends in "e", we remove e and "ing" is added.
Ex.: To Live living / To Come coming.
2.- If the verb is a monosyllable and ends in a consonant the last consonant is
doubled and we add "ing."
Ex.: To Beg begging / To Win = winning.
We use the past continuous to talk about the past:
 for something which happened before and after another action:
The children were doing their homework when I got home.
Compare: The children did their homework when (= after) I got
home.
 This use of the past continuous is very common at the
beginning of a story:
The other day I was waiting for a bus when …
Last week, as I was driving to work, …
for something that happened before and after a
specific time:
It was eight o'clock. I was writing a letter.
Compare: At eight o'clock I wrote (= started writing) some
letters.
 to show that something continued for some time:
My head was aching.
Everyone was shouting.
 for something that happened again and again:
I was practising every day, three times a day.
They were meeting secretly after school.
They were always fighting.
with verbs which show change or growth:
The children were growing up quickly.
Her English was improving.
The town was changing quickly.
What was he doing
yesterday at 7 a.m.?
He was having
a shower.
What were you
doing yesterday
at 7 a.m.?
What was he doing
yesterday at 7.30 a.m.?
He was eating
breakfast.
What were you
doing yesterday
at 7.30 a.m.?
What was he
doing yesterday
at noon?
He was playing
football at school.
What were you
doing yesterday
at noon?
What was he
doing yesterday
at 4 p.m.?
He was doing
his homework.
What were you
doing yesterday
at 4 p.m.?
What was he
doing yesterday
at 9 p.m.?
He was watching TV.
What were you
doing yesterday
at 9 p.m.?
Was she watching
TV yesterday at
midnight?
No, she wasn’t.
She was sleeping.
Was she having
dinner yesterday
at 9 p.m.?
Yes, she was.
Were you having
a bath yesterday
at midnight?
What were you doing
before this class ?

Hi, there.
Terrible weekend! I was walking in the park when a cyclist hit me! I fell
down, and now I have a sprained wrist and a bruise on my shoulder. Hope
your weekend was better.
