THE SHADOW
Carl Gustav JUNG
What is the "Shadow"?
 It is our dark side / "negative" ego
 It is known only by projecting on others
 It can be equated with the personal unconscious
discovered by Freud
 It contains everything discharges because someone is
rejected or dismissed by the superego
SHADOW is composed of two aspects of the human psyche:
 • by one side means that less evolved
psychic area, darker, with reference
to the moral norms of a civilized
consciousness.
• by the other side is the sum of all
faults, weaknesses, negative
trends, which are rejected by the
ego of the individual.
The Shadow archetype is personified by the Devil, who divides, who tempts ...
Somehow it is the opposite of the archetype of the Self, symbolized by God, who unites the
individual into a harmonious being.
This violence, intrinsic to most reprehensible and despicable aspects of the individual
personality, the selfishness, barbarism and sadism, the vindictive and consuming pride,
collectively unfold during destructive wars and blind hatred.
The SHADOW is also present in everyday life, in family conflicts, at work, in politics,
religious disputes, where the desire for domination, subjugation and reckless lust of
power represent an expression of the primitivism of the undeveloped psychic natures.
The first encounter with the shadow is considered a
moral effort.
The SHADOW is the first archetype that we face
when we start self-analysis / introspection. When
not assimilated and controlled by the self
conscious, it may occur in dreams combined with
the archetype of the anima (in men). Therefore
women can dream of malefic witches or women
with supernatural powers and destructive impulses
that affect the mind and eros. Let us remember the
phallic mother (a female figure endowed with
aggressive, phallic powers) - if the dreamer
discharges her/his own aggression.
Everything we cannot accept will be buried into the SHADOW.
Our own SHADOW is embarrassing and disturbing in the same way that the shadow of
others is interesting.
The Aggressive Shadow
• we suddenly feel surrounded and
threatened by an aggressive world
The Shadow of Power
• we find ourselves surrounded by
people with excessive power
Types of SHADOW Archetypes
Consequences of SHADOW projection:
• We deal in a destructive way with our problems, because they belong to other people that we cannot
influence.
• We enter a vicious circle of fear and aggression, triggering the victim – aggressor relationship dynamics.
According to Jung, the human being struggles with the reality of the shadow in four
ways: denial, projection, integration, and/or transmutation.
