The Scandal Of Healthsouth Corporation Scandal
Introduction Organizational misconduct is the chief cause behind corporate accounting scandals.
The trusted executives of the corporation participation in actions during a scandal are corrupt,
unethical, and illegal. In the United States, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is
typically the government agency that investigates such scandals. One of the most notorious
corporate accounting scandals in the United States is the HealthSouth Corporation scandal of 2003.
HealthSouth Corporation is one of the United States largest healthcare providers with locations
nationwide. A deeper inspection of the HealthSouth scandal is needed to understand how it
transpired by assessing how it was executed, the accounting issues and root of the issue, how it was
exposed, the results to the company and its main contributor, and ramifications as an outcome of the
scandal.
Scandal Overview In 1984, Richard Scrushy founded HealthSouth in Birmingham, Alabama.
Scrushy was the company's Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) when the company went
public in 1986. HealthSouth grew quickly over the next several years. Shortly after HealthSouth
went public, it is alleged that Scrushy instructed senior staff to materially inflate the company's

Causes Of The Watergate Scandal
Considering the post–war era of American society and the intense political conflicts, the Watergate
scandal increased problems in society. The Watergate scandal was a result of many events beginning
in the late 1950's to 1960's such as Vietnam, Nixon's campaign, and the Pentagon papers. In the late
1960's Richard Nixon won the presidency over Hubert Humphrey in what is called the closest
election in American history. This election was the beginning to what would become the Watergate
scandal in 1970's. Some of Nixon's policies for the government involved expansion of federal
agencies, which gave him easy access to classified documents or files.
One major event that triggered the infamous scandal was in 1971 when the Pentagon Papers were
released by the New York Times; A few months later, the "Plumbers" unit broke into an office in
attempt to discover files on who released them, Daniel Ellsberg. These "Plumbers" broke into the
Democratic National Committee in attempt to find information about Nixon's opponent. Many
public officials were involved in the cover–up and break–in itself which led to widespread
corruption in the government. Some of those involved in these events were James McCord, a former
CIA agent; Richard Nixon, the president; Sam Ervin, the man who first began to investigate the
crimes; John Dean; John Ehrlichman and Gordon Liddy. Many events led up to the Watergate
scandal, but it left a major mark on American history and holds a crucial significance to the

Accounting Scandals And Enron Accounting Scandal
Introduction:
In this research paper I will be examining accounting scandals, specifically the Enron Accounting
Scandal. First, I will be exploring the history of Enron. Then I will be going into further depth on
what accounting issues Enron faced and then I will be explaining what a derivative is. Finally yet
importantly, I will consider the different types of Accounting Fraud following a conclusion.
Accounting Scandals are born due to collective greed and corporate arrogance. In the case of Enron
there was a lot of euphoria before the downfall. Stock prices soared and Enron was seen as one of
the most innovative companies in the world. However, things seemed too good to be true.
Eventually the company was exposed for its wrongdoing which led to the collapse. Many more of
such cases were exposed during the 2008/2009 recession such as the Lehmann Brothers scandal. As
mentioned earlier, many financial scandals have happened in the past but none of those are nearly as
bad as the scandals when it gets to trading in derivatives.
Summary of the Enron Accounting Scandal:
In the year of 1985 after the federal deregulation of natural gas pipelines, Enron was born. The
company was formed by merging the following two companies: Houston Natural Gas and
InterNorth, a Nebraska pipeline company.
In the process of the merger, Enron incurred massive debt and, as the result of deregulation, no
longer had exclusive

Wells Fargo Scandal
The Wells Fargo scandal involved a variety of stakeholders who have stake in the issue; however,
the main stakeholders include the consumers, the employees and their families, and stockholders of
the organization. The affect these stakeholders suffer varies, but the ultimate affect the scandal has
had is violation of trust by Wells Fargo and its leadership. When examining this situation, the main
stakeholders who suffered the greatest harm from the scandal were the customers who fell victim to
the fraud and had their privacy violated by an organization they trusted. In the course text, Trevino
and Nelson spoke of the importance of trust and its importance in a service economy. Wells Fargo
violation of the consumers' trust has ultimately added ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Watergate Scandal Analysis
All you hear on the news or in magazines is all about crimes committed against the government, but
what if there was a crime committed by a president. A president that you voted for to help make
decisions and keep your county safe and sound. It seems a little strange that in the morning of June
17, 1972, their was a robbery caught in action where two people connected to Richard Nixon's
reelection complain. They were caught wiretapping phone calls and trying steal secret documents

History Of The Watergate Scandal
Throughout history, the American people have had a hard time instilling trust in their government
and political leaders. Between the numerous scandals involving United States presidents and other
political leaders and the dozens of conspiracy theories encompassing the United States government,
it is no wonder why the American people have lost trust in their government, and why the United
States has become the laughing stock of foreign countries. The 2016 presidential election was
arguably the most controversial election in American history; many voters felt that neither of the
candidates could be trusted due to their questionable actions. Numerous Americans were outraged
when current U.S. president, Donald J. Trump, was sworn into office; due ... Show more content on

Flynn was one of the earliest supporters of Trump's campaign. Often known to have harsh political
views and fondness of conspiracy theories, Flynn was no stranger to controversy. In a hacked email
scandal, former Secretary of State Colin Powell called him "right–wing nutty"–but Trump that did
not matter to Trump and he rewarded Flynn's loyalty by making him his national–security adviser
(SCHMIDLE, NICHOLAS). The Washington Post publicized that Flynn, who was still a private
citizen at the time, had talked about American sanctions against Russia with Sergey Kislyak, the
Russian Ambassador while he was in Washington. This scandal was revealed when Flynn was only
three weeks into his new job as Trump's national–security adviser. The conversations were between

The Watergate Scandal Of America
The Watergate scandal was an event with many strong incidents in pre–scandal, present scandal, and
post–scandal. How could this scandal affect American politics? One event that is currently
happening right now because it's a result of the scandal and is affecting American politics is the loss
of trust in the government by the public. With conspiracy theories directed towards criminals and
Nixon running out of office, trust in the system was at an all–time low. Another effect of Watergate
is when the media increased its scrutiny of politics and politicians. Ever since the Watergate scandal,
the publishers of media have inflated and over exaggerated the news about Americas federal system
to try to be noticed or start a world controversy. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During this period, a presidential election was seemed essential because the Vietnam War was taking
place which led the US to a harsh political divide. The harsh methods used in this campaign were
actually known as "illegal espionage". This lead to Nixon's group who reelected the president to
steel "copies of top–secret documents and bugged the office's phones" (Watergate: The Break–In).
This break in was known as a third–rate burglary attempt. Their attempt failed and the committee
came back to the building a few days later to barge right back in, but this time getting caught before
things got out of hand.
This scandal was attempted to be covered up but did not work. President Richard Nixon thought to
himself, if the media found out about this, they would blow the situation way out of proportion and
take it further then needed (which they did when they found out). Nixon also thought that if any
American citizen found out about this scandal, they would lose trust in politics and never be able to
rely on the governmental system. So the people that attempted to break into the system were offered
money to keep quiet and not tell any true stories to the media. Nixon gave speeches and
presentations on how the staff were not the crime committers and that the people who did it were
unknown. His voters and coworkers grew suspicious so they did a mini, untracked investigation.
They found tape recordings of every conversation made in the Oval office; if people got ahold of

The Scandal Of The Enron Scandal
Accounting is a necessary and vital part of maintaining any business, it is needed to file taxes, know
how much one has in assets and liabilities, and indicate to investors whether the company would be
a profitable undertaking. However, sometimes the accounting goes horribly wrong when people,
even those who seem to be moral and uncorrubtable, fudge the numbers. By inflating books, they
can get away with billions of dollars in fraud and make nice bonuses for themselves. However, these
acts of greed affect not only the fraudulent person, but their families, coworkers, and other
businesses. There are several ways massive accounting fraud has taken place in companies, from
increasing depreciation, to not reporting debt, to right–out making up numbers to report. These
frauds have been detected in multiple ways as well whistleblowers, internal audits, and even the
fraudulent people themselves. The effect of these scandals have taken a heavy toll on businesses
financially and on people involved emotionally. One scandal that had a lot of family involvement
and heartache was the Bernie Madoff scandal in 2008. Bernie Madoff, along with his accountant
David Friehling and Frank DiPascalli orchestrated the largest Ponzi scheme ever with his investment
securities business. Madoff's company Ascot managed a diverse portfolio of clients, from high–
profile multi–millionaires to hospitals to non–profits. They all suffered losses, and some even lost

While the effects of Watergate had far–reaching consequences for journalism, not everything to
come out of the scandal came to be positive. As a result of the Watergate scandal many journalists
try to find a Watergate like story even where there is none, Monicagate is a perfect example. In
addition, many critics of the media argue since Watergate many people have become
disenfranchised with Media's constant negativity. Another result of Watergate is the use of the media

Namely, the time and energy necessary to uncover the minutiae that Woodward and Bernstein found
would not be available to reporters of today. The seemingly endless amount of stories the media
covers today restrict the amount of time a news outlet has to devote to one story. Woodward and
Bernstein spent a better part of eighteen months investigating Watergate. I imagine you would be
hard–pressed to find an editor willing to let a journalist devote that much time to one story today.
The money needed to fuel such an investigation would be just as hard to come up with as well.
Many newspapers are bleeding from profit losses and such a lengthy investigation would no doubt
cost an extreme amount of money. While other forms of media, namely television, have the vast
resources to fund such an investigation, they hardly lend themselves to such a lengthy and
exhausting inquiry. Sadly, stories like Watergate lack the necessary "flash" factor to be deemed
worthy of televisions attention. Unless the story involves a celebrity or blood many news channels
ignore actual news. The endless reports of Brittany Spears or "Bennifer" drown the real news of the
day. For instance, the recent battles over the misdeeds of Tom Delay only get the slightest attention
but we will no doubt hear every detail of Spears' pregnancy. Perhaps the best arena for uncovering a

Watergate Scandal In Vietnam
On June 17, 1972, inverstigators discovered that burglars hand intruded the Watergate Complex in

Richard Nixons reelection campain broke into the Watergate Complex and stole many classified
documents. The five memebers also wire tapped all of the phones within the complex to help gather
extra classified information. Nixon denied any involvement in the burglary, but however,

Gerald Ford, his vice president, was sworn into office and pardoned Nixon for all of his crimes. The
conspirators, however, were not as lucky and most of them ended up being sent to federal prison for
their crimes. Nixon never admitted to conspiring with the five men during the scandal and denied
any wrongdoings while he was in office. He simply based his wrongdoing on the inference that his
judgement was rather "poor". The overall outcome of this scandal left American society and a

The Watergate Scandal
Abstract
On November 5, 1968 Richard M. Nixon was elected the 37th president of the United States. In
1972 Nixon was reelected in a landslide victory. However, His undoing was already in the works. A
few months prior to Nixon's reelection a group of men linked to the Nixon administration were
arrested in the Democratic party headquarters in Washington's Watergate complex and what
followed was one of the biggest scandals in presidential history. The Watergate scandal was revealed
as a cover–up by the Nixon administration to hide involvement in illegal activities against their
opponents and ultimately lead to Nixon's resignation from his presidency on August 9, 1974. Nixon
was granted a full pardon from the Ford administration a month later. A few years later Nixon was
paid $600,000 by British TV personality David Frost for a string of in depth television interviews.
The last decades of Nixon's life were spent rebuilding his reputation. He will always be remembered
as the face of the embarrassing Watergate scandal. Due to these events no president will ever be
trusted.

Nixon refused to release the tapes, claiming that they were vital to the national security. Therefore,
U.S. District Court Judge John Sirica ruled that President Nixon must give the tapes to Cox, and an
appeals court upheld the decision. Nixon still refused to turn over the tapes and on Saturday,
October 20, 1973, ordered Richardson to dismiss Cox. Richardson refused and resigned instead, as
did Deputy Attorney General William Ruckelshaus. Finally, the solicitor general discharged Cox.
Suddenly, a storm of public protest occurred, thus leading to the "Saturday Night Massacre." Nixon,
in his defense, appointed another special prosecutor, Leon Jaworski, a Texas lawyer, and gave the
tapes to Sirica. Unfortunately, some of the conversations were missing from the tapes and one tape
had a mysterious gap of eighteen and a half minutes. Experts determined that the gap was the result
of five separate erasures. Nevertheless, on March 1974, a grand jury indicated Mitchell, Haldeman,
Ehrlichman, and four other White House officials for their part in the Watergate cover–up and
named President Nixon as an "unindicated co–conspirator." In the following month Jaworski
requested and Nixon released written transcripts of forty–two more tapes. The conversations
revealed an overwhelming concern with punishing political opponents and denied the Watergate
investigation. On May 1974, Jaworski requested sixty–four more tapes as evidence in the criminal

The tape recordings that officials listened to, showed recordings of Nixon listening in on certain
conversations and meetings. After that evidence was uncovered, it became clear to the public that
Nixon was indeed guilty. Although Nixon had ample evidence mounted against him to prove he was
guilty, he did not get impeached because he officially resigned before the impeachment process
could be done. A main reason that Nixon was found guilty is evidence uncovered by Frank Willis, at
midnight on June 17, 1972. He was a security guard at the Watergate Complex and discovered
adhesive tape over the latches of doors. He initially just took off the tape, and didn't really think

The Effects Of The Watergate Scandal
Many people, myself included look up to individuals in an authoritative role such as; senators,
governors, and presidents. We view them as being honest and sincere. They have to be right? They
do want to run the country after all. Often our thoughts are "they would never lie to us or hide things

United States of America was the Watergate scandal involving our very own President Richard
Nixon. This scandal caused a lot of American's to lose trust and hope in the presidency. The scandal
received its name from the Watergate apartment and office complex that was located in Washington
D.C., where a burglary took place on June 17, 1972 and five men were arrested. It then came to
surface that the men's intentions were to sabotage the opposite political party, when president Nixon

Two years after Enron filed for bankruptcy in 2001, Nancy b. Rapoport wrote this essay expressing
her unique perspective on the real cause of Enron's demise. This essay catches the reader's attention
instantly, because unlike abundant other articles written on the biggest corporate scandal in
American history, the author here rejects Jeff Skilling's (former president of Enron) argument1 of
what brought about Enron's downfall. She instead uses another metaphor, arguing that Enron's
downfall was more like Titanic's– ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I would go a step further to say that it seems like the author has taken the metaphors a bit too
seriously and would agree with Mark's comment in 'Lawyers in the Perfect Storm3' that ''her
insistence on comparison of the Enron scandal to the tragicomedy of human errors in the sinking of
the Titanic underestimates the importance of the systemic failures that allowed the malign leadership
of Enron to produce such an enormous disaster.'' Nevertheless, she develops her further argument
well as she explores the inextricable link between Character and Leadership. She elaborates on the
inevitable failure of character in Enron leaders to resist illegal deals when the supervisors of those
leaders were also engaging in side deals (pg 209). Her close attention to the underlying conflict of
human traits and situations, aggravated by the magnitude of profits offered by the Enron culture
justifies her statement, 'why it must have taken significant strength of character to resist getting on
that gravy train' (pg 210).

The Watergate Scandal
The Watergate scandal during Richard Nixon's presidency was arguably the high point of
journalism's role in American politics. What had been considered a rather inept burglary attempt
upon Democratic party offices in the Watergate Hotel in Washington D.C. and was therefore ignored
by most journalists when it happened was investigated by Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward
and Carl Bernstein, until it was proven to be a criminal conspiracy whose organization and
subsequent cover–up reached as high as the Oval Office. In terms of media coverage of the scandal,
however, it is worth noting that while Woodward and Bernstein had access to a privileged source of
information, whom they named only as "Deep Throat" (but much later revealed to be high–ranking
FBI official W. Mark Felt), they were not the only reporters covering the scandal as it unfolded. By
looking at other journalistic sources, it may be possible to get a larger view of how President Nixon
dealt with the scandal, how public opinion and responded, and ultimately how Nixon was led to
resign. The Watergate burglary occurred in June of 1972, since it was conducted as part of a
strategic effort to undermine the Democratic Party's campaign to run against Nixon in the
presidential election later that year. Nixon won the 1972 election in a landslide: any coverage of the
scandal that occurred before November of 1972 was sufficiently unincriminating that it did not
hamper his re–election campaign. Although hints that the

The Watergate Scandal
Political leaders of the United States were, at one time, thought of as crucial members of our society.
Ideally, their main goal was to represent and satisfy the needs of the American people.
Unfortunately, over the last fifty years, our trust in our administrative representatives has drastically
declined. Beginning with the great conspiracy theory that President John F. Kennedy's assassination
in 1963 was actually planned by political leaders, America had, for the first time in history, begun to
question its faith in its very own government. Consequently, the American people became extremely
hesitant when it came to electing officials into office. Despite his loss to JFK in the 1960
presidential election, in 1968, Richard M. Nixon was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Since the two reporters from The Washington Post were beginning to put together the entire story
piece–by–piece, the government soon began conducting their own investigation. What the
authorities did not know was that an inside source who had access to all of the FBI files, nicknamed
"Deep Throat", was secretly confirming information for Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward to
publish in the newspaper (Crawford–Mason, Clare). It was not until 2005 when "Deep Throat"
would reveal his identity as Mark Felt – the director of the FBI at the time of the Watergate Scandal
("The Watergate Story: The Post Investigates").
While the government was leading their investigation, it soon became public that John Mitchell, the
current Attorney General who had previously denied any affiliation with the instances at Watergate,
had been keeping a private account specifically intended for collecting information on the
Democrats ("Mitchell Controlled Secret GOP Fund"). Later, the FBI publicly declared that the
Watergate incident "stemmed from a massive campaign of political spying and sabotage conducted
on behalf of President Nixon's re–election and directed by officials of the White House and the
Committee for the Re–election of the President" ("FBI Finds Nixon Aides Sabotaged Democrats").

If the WorldCom would have adopted the goal setting theory in their organization, its executive and

Corporate Governance
Corporate governance is the set of processes, customs, policies, laws and institutions, which
directed, administered and controlled over the corporation (Monks & Minow, 2008). Corporate
governance is a way by which a company governs itself for providing the values to their stake
holders. The WorldCom did not follow the corporate governance policy. If the WorldCom would
have followed the corporate governance it would have not led towards this business failure and
company would have not gone for the unethical practices conduct in the organization. Corporate
governance would have increased the faith of stakeholders towards the company and company

Adoption of Ethical Behavior
The Ethical Behavior would enhance the performance of the company, because the ethical behavior

It was suggested that the President had tried to repair the damages that were caused the Watergate
scandal in the first article. From a speech President Nixon had given, it showed that there were a lot
things that still needed to be done regarding the scandal. The article stated that the officials under
the Watergate scandal were cheating, lying and engaging in illegal activities while in high positions
of the government.
The people believed that the president did not stand up to the crisis and that he had only done the
bare requirements for the situation at hand. The people stongly believed that President Nixon should
have done something more to eliminate the Watergate scandal as soon as it was leaked. The article

The Chicago Tribune's editorial called for the impeachment of the President, and the author still
believed that the President had tried his best in handling of the matter (Genovese, et. all, 2012).
The scandal forced changes to the politicians that hold office by making renovations in the
statehouse in the way that elections are ran and politicians run their office. The crisis ended with
President Nixon being impeached and a scandal that will forever be remember in American history.
Reforms were done due to the pressure of the scandal. Because of the scandal, the people demand
more honesty from their constintuants. The people also require limits on the amount of money
politicians can spend.
The events change the general view on how the press covered politicians. From that point, the press
was able to include the internal personal life of politician reviling what they had otherwise hidden
from the public. It was as a result of pressure from the Chicago Tribune's editorial coverage that
showed the failures and neglects from the President in his handling of the Watergate crisis that
ultimately led to his resignation.
In a time of social media and smartphones, coverage of the Watergate scandal could have been
different because any of the information that was hidden during those that time would be easily
available to the American citizens (Olson, 2003). All facets of social media would have covered the

The Watergate Scandal
The Watergate Scandal involved a number of illegal activities that were designed to help President
Richard Nixon win re–election. The scandal involved burglary, wiretapping, campaign financing
violations, and the use of government agencies to harm political opponents. A major part of the
scandal was also the cover–up of all these illegal actions. "Watergate, however, differed from most
previous political scandals because personal greed apparently did not play an important role. Instead
Watergate attacked one of the chief features of Democracy – free and open elections" (Worldbook

In April of 1973, special prosecutor Archibald Cox was appointed to handle the case. Presidential
Council John W. Dean III became the chief witness against President Nixon in the court hearings. In
the trial Dean admitted that he was a major part of the scandal and that Nixon did in fact know of
the illegal activities being committed by his administration. Dean also testified that Nixon's
Administration had planned to use the IRS and other government agencies to punish people who the
White House had placed on so called "enemies–lists" (Worldbook 2). Dean served four months in
prison for his part in the Watergate Scandal, but through his testimony a new door was opened into
the scandal.
Through further investigation it was discovered by Alexander P. Butterfield, that President Nixon
had made tape recordings of conversations with White House officials. When asked to release the
tapes Nixon refused, saying that he had a constitutional right to keep the tapes confidential. He was
later ordered by the court to hand over the tapes. Nixon offered to provide summaries of all the
tapes, but his idea was rejected and he was again ordered to hand over the original tapes. Infuriated
by the court's decision, he ordered his attorney general and his deputy attorney general to fire Cox.

The Watergate Scandal
Watergate, the greatest scandal of the 20th century, remains a shrouded mystery. Early on the
morning of June 17, 1972, there was a break–in and several burglars were arrested inside the office
of the Democratic National Committee's headquarters in the Watergate Office complex building
located in Washington, D.C. Thus began a series of events that would shake the public's confidence
in its most visible symbol of American authority and prestige: the presidency of Richard Nixon. A
seemingly random robbery at a Washington, D.C. building leads to the first presidential resignation
in American history. We will discuss the following events surrounding the Watergate break–in: when
did the break–in occur, how was Nixon connected to the break–in. We will also discuss the events
surrounding the discovery of the tapes, the issues involved in trying to get the tapes from President
Nixon and what is the "18 1/2 minutes of silence". Finally, throughout this paper we will also
include Archibald Cox the first Watergate special prosecutor.
This was no ordinary robbery that happened on the morning of June 17, 1972. The burglars were
connected to President Richard Nixon's reelection campaign, and the prowlers had been caught
while attempting to wiretap phones and steal secret documents. The historians of this decade are not
sure whether or not President Richard Nixon knew about the Watergate espionage operation before
it happened. However, History.com states, President Nixon, okayed

cocaine evidence was missing from the Los Angeles Police Department. The LAPD chief officer,
Bernard Parks, started to question the missing evidence and focused his investigation in CRASH
officer Rafael Perez. Later in the investigation it became cleat that another pound of cocaine went
missing from the evidence room right after an arrest was made by office Frank Lyga, the officer who

switched the cocaine evidence with Bisquick, a pancake mix. Perez was later charged but made a

committed by the President and his staff, who were found to spied on and harassed political
opponents, accepted illegal campaign contributions, and covered up their own misdeeds. On June
17, 1972, The Washington Post published a small story. In this story the reporters stated that five
men had been arrested breaking into the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee. The
headquarters was located in a Washington, D.C., building complex called Watergate. These burglars

Democratic nomination went to George McGovern, a liberal senator from South Dakota. His

numbers of woman, minorities, and young people among the delegates. McGovern's campaign ran
into trouble early. The press revealed that his running mate, Thomas Eagleton, had once received

Richard Nixon's time in the White House was, without a doubt, one of the most unusual presidencies
in American history. Nixon quickly took a different approach from the men that came before him;
although he entered office at a trying time for the American people, he insisted that the public
needed the hard facts, not inspirational speeches. However, after winning the election Nixon gave in
to his advisors' desires for an uplifting message, and promised the public that his administration
would be committed to "bringing the American people together". While Nixon rarely repeated this
message, and probably never meant it, Nixon did manage to unite the American people, just not in

Once president, his disgust for the elite translated into a desire to prove that they "no longer
possessed any character". He set out to do this by doing his best to shrink the liberal government
that had developed in the year's prior and particularly rejoiced when his victim either had no idea
who or how he was defeated. Unfortunately, however, the methods in which he used to bring his
enemies down and to protect himself were often shady and underhanded. Perhaps the most shocking
of which were the illegal activities included in the Watergate scandal. Nixon had a hand in not only
selling ambassadorships; but also harassing the Democratic National Committee chairman Lawrence
O'Brien, stealing files to blackmail retired presidents, and even putting spies in political groups he
deemed radical. What would ultimately prove his downfall, however, would be the failed break–in
attempt at the Democratic National Committee Headquarters in the Watergate complex. While
Nixon may not have been aware of the specifics involved in the burglary plans, he had approved the
Gemstone Plan under which the burglary was put into effect. The burglars were hired to break into
the Committee's headquarters and bug the telephones so that Nixon would be able to determine who
was contributing to the Democratic campaign and punish them as he saw fit. Unfortunately for

Tells the story of Sherlock Holmes, a detective capable of solving even the hardest of mysteries. In
A Scandal in Bohemia Holmes helps the King in retrieving an item from a previous relationship he

A Scandal in Bohemia takes the stance on showing the distinction between social class and the way
women were treated. Social class was a problem and still is to this day. The separation of the rich
and poor detached the people and left them in two separate worlds. The story intermingles the King
of Bohemia with a middle–class woman named Irene Adler. This affair turned bad when he left her
for a Scandinavian princess, so he wouldn't be shunned for marrying a woman of lower class. Even
with him loving her, all because she was of middle–class he would and could not see a future with
her. But the other problem lies with the treatment of women. The viewing down on them because of
their gender bias. Now in our time, we can see the big change in how women were treated, but
during the time Sherlock Holmes was written, this was relevant in his stories. We see this scattered
in the story as Irene Adler, the female protagonist is viewed as less to the characters but is proven as
"the best plans of Mr. Sherlock Holmes were beaten by a woman's wit." (Doyle 13) It's obvious to
include this story as an outlet to show the wrongdoings of his time. For this, it allows readers to see
what's erroneous and know what is happening around them. This is the reason this story is more

The Watergate Scandal
"I Am Not a Crook": How One Scandalous Administration Impacted the Government There was a
time where media and the government worked alongside each other in a symbiotic relationship, such
as with President Franklin D. Roosevelt during his Fireside Chats in the midst of the Great
Depression. Their job was to promote FDR and help him keep the American people informed on
what he was getting done in Washington. Even if the media the president were on bad terms, prior to

In the wake of the Watergate scandal, however, that dynamic changed completely. Bob Woodward's

Because of Watergate, contention and distrust sprung from people and still exist today. Prior to
Watergate, the general public expressed content with the government and its policies, with the
exception of the Vietnam War. During the Great Depression, people cherished and depended on the
expansion of government because of the deplorable economic times, "the central idea was that
government should protect people from the worst vagaries of a market economy" (The New
American Consensus; Government of, by and For the Comfortable, 1998). Also Johnson's "Great
Society" gained a lot of political clout was well. The steady decline in support for the government
can undoubtedly be traced back to Nixon. After Gerald Ford assumed office struggled to move away
from the Watergate incident and he felt the best way was by pardoning Nixon for all his
transgressions. This had the opposite effect. The American people felt that he cheated the system or
even more inexcusable, bargained to pardon Nixon if he became president. In this dark time, sprung
an era where morality and ethics were important which explains the election of Jimmy carter who
claimed "that he would clean up the 'cesspool' Washington had become and restore a sense of
morality in the white House...." (2006, p.24). Even though he spouted his famous phrase, "I will
never tell a lie" his inability to restore the economy and ineffectiveness as a president furthered the
dissent that the Americans had with the government (Economy Is Not Only Problem Facing Cater,
1997). In fact since Nixon's Resignation there has been a broad downward trend from fifty–three

Some would argue that while Watergate played a huge role in American

HealthSouth Scandal Overview

  • 1. The Scandal Of Healthsouth Corporation Scandal Introduction Organizational misconduct is the chief cause behind corporate accounting scandals. The trusted executives of the corporation participation in actions during a scandal are corrupt, unethical, and illegal. In the United States, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is typically the government agency that investigates such scandals. One of the most notorious corporate accounting scandals in the United States is the HealthSouth Corporation scandal of 2003. HealthSouth Corporation is one of the United States largest healthcare providers with locations nationwide. A deeper inspection of the HealthSouth scandal is needed to understand how it transpired by assessing how it was executed, the accounting issues and root of the issue, how it was exposed, the results to the company and its main contributor, and ramifications as an outcome of the scandal. Scandal Overview In 1984, Richard Scrushy founded HealthSouth in Birmingham, Alabama. Scrushy was the company's Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) when the company went public in 1986. HealthSouth grew quickly over the next several years. Shortly after HealthSouth went public, it is alleged that Scrushy instructed senior staff to materially inflate the company's earnings to match expectations. In 2002, the first sign of troubles occurred when Scrushy sold $75 million of HealthSouth stock days before HealthSouth announced a large loss. After this the SEC began to investigate if any insider trading laws had ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Causes Of The Watergate Scandal Considering the post–war era of American society and the intense political conflicts, the Watergate scandal increased problems in society. The Watergate scandal was a result of many events beginning in the late 1950's to 1960's such as Vietnam, Nixon's campaign, and the Pentagon papers. In the late 1960's Richard Nixon won the presidency over Hubert Humphrey in what is called the closest election in American history. This election was the beginning to what would become the Watergate scandal in 1970's. Some of Nixon's policies for the government involved expansion of federal agencies, which gave him easy access to classified documents or files. One major event that triggered the infamous scandal was in 1971 when the Pentagon Papers were released by the New York Times; A few months later, the "Plumbers" unit broke into an office in attempt to discover files on who released them, Daniel Ellsberg. These "Plumbers" broke into the Democratic National Committee in attempt to find information about Nixon's opponent. Many public officials were involved in the cover–up and break–in itself which led to widespread corruption in the government. Some of those involved in these events were James McCord, a former CIA agent; Richard Nixon, the president; Sam Ervin, the man who first began to investigate the crimes; John Dean; John Ehrlichman and Gordon Liddy. Many events led up to the Watergate scandal, but it left a major mark on American history and holds a crucial significance to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Accounting Scandals And Enron Accounting Scandal Introduction: In this research paper I will be examining accounting scandals, specifically the Enron Accounting Scandal. First, I will be exploring the history of Enron. Then I will be going into further depth on what accounting issues Enron faced and then I will be explaining what a derivative is. Finally yet importantly, I will consider the different types of Accounting Fraud following a conclusion. Accounting Scandals are born due to collective greed and corporate arrogance. In the case of Enron there was a lot of euphoria before the downfall. Stock prices soared and Enron was seen as one of the most innovative companies in the world. However, things seemed too good to be true. Eventually the company was exposed for its wrongdoing which led to the collapse. Many more of such cases were exposed during the 2008/2009 recession such as the Lehmann Brothers scandal. As mentioned earlier, many financial scandals have happened in the past but none of those are nearly as bad as the scandals when it gets to trading in derivatives. Summary of the Enron Accounting Scandal: In the year of 1985 after the federal deregulation of natural gas pipelines, Enron was born. The company was formed by merging the following two companies: Houston Natural Gas and InterNorth, a Nebraska pipeline company. In the process of the merger, Enron incurred massive debt and, as the result of deregulation, no longer had exclusive ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Wells Fargo Scandal The Wells Fargo scandal involved a variety of stakeholders who have stake in the issue; however, the main stakeholders include the consumers, the employees and their families, and stockholders of the organization. The affect these stakeholders suffer varies, but the ultimate affect the scandal has had is violation of trust by Wells Fargo and its leadership. When examining this situation, the main stakeholders who suffered the greatest harm from the scandal were the customers who fell victim to the fraud and had their privacy violated by an organization they trusted. In the course text, Trevino and Nelson spoke of the importance of trust and its importance in a service economy. Wells Fargo violation of the consumers' trust has ultimately added ... In the wake of the scandal, over 5,300 employees were fired over the course of five years for their involvements in the creation of the fake accounts. Some of the initial whistleblowers of the scandal faced retaliation by being terminated for speaking out against the orders to open fake accounts. CNN Money correspondent Matt Egan spoke with Bill Bado, a former employee of Wells Fargo, who has not been able to security another banking securities job since his termination for calling the Ethics Hotline to report the fraudulent activities. The last stakeholder of this scandal are the stockholders who have suffered financial lost in having to pay out millions in the lawsuits filed against Wells Fargo. The stockholders have also lost confidence in the leadership on the organization affecting how and if they will continue to invest and whether they will demand for a leadership change among the board of directors. • 9. The Watergate Scandal Analysis All you hear on the news or in magazines is all about crimes committed against the government, but what if there was a crime committed by a president. A president that you voted for to help make decisions and keep your county safe and sound. It seems a little strange that in the morning of June 17, 1972, their was a robbery caught in action where two people connected to Richard Nixon's reelection complain. They were caught wiretapping phone calls and trying steal secret documents inside the of the Democratic National Committee, found in the watergate building in Washington D.C. • 11. History Of The Watergate Scandal Throughout history, the American people have had a hard time instilling trust in their government and political leaders. Between the numerous scandals involving United States presidents and other political leaders and the dozens of conspiracy theories encompassing the United States government, it is no wonder why the American people have lost trust in their government, and why the United States has become the laughing stock of foreign countries. The 2016 presidential election was arguably the most controversial election in American history; many voters felt that neither of the candidates could be trusted due to their questionable actions. Numerous Americans were outraged when current U.S. president, Donald J. Trump, was sworn into office; due ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Flynn was one of the earliest supporters of Trump's campaign. Often known to have harsh political views and fondness of conspiracy theories, Flynn was no stranger to controversy. In a hacked email scandal, former Secretary of State Colin Powell called him "right–wing nutty"–but Trump that did not matter to Trump and he rewarded Flynn's loyalty by making him his national–security adviser (SCHMIDLE, NICHOLAS). The Washington Post publicized that Flynn, who was still a private citizen at the time, had talked about American sanctions against Russia with Sergey Kislyak, the Russian Ambassador while he was in Washington. This scandal was revealed when Flynn was only three weeks into his new job as Trump's national–security adviser. The conversations were between the two were thought to be illegal. The Obama Administration declared the removal of 35 Russian diplomats in retaliation for Russia's attempts to swing the election in Trump's favor; ironically, Flynn and Kislyak's communications, by phone calls and text messaging, happened on the same day (SCHMIDLE, NICHOLAS). • 13. The Watergate Scandal Of America The Watergate scandal was an event with many strong incidents in pre–scandal, present scandal, and post–scandal. How could this scandal affect American politics? One event that is currently happening right now because it's a result of the scandal and is affecting American politics is the loss of trust in the government by the public. With conspiracy theories directed towards criminals and Nixon running out of office, trust in the system was at an all–time low. Another effect of Watergate is when the media increased its scrutiny of politics and politicians. Ever since the Watergate scandal, the publishers of media have inflated and over exaggerated the news about Americas federal system to try to be noticed or start a world controversy. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... During this period, a presidential election was seemed essential because the Vietnam War was taking place which led the US to a harsh political divide. The harsh methods used in this campaign were actually known as "illegal espionage". This lead to Nixon's group who reelected the president to steel "copies of top–secret documents and bugged the office's phones" (Watergate: The Break–In). This break in was known as a third–rate burglary attempt. Their attempt failed and the committee came back to the building a few days later to barge right back in, but this time getting caught before things got out of hand. This scandal was attempted to be covered up but did not work. President Richard Nixon thought to himself, if the media found out about this, they would blow the situation way out of proportion and take it further then needed (which they did when they found out). Nixon also thought that if any American citizen found out about this scandal, they would lose trust in politics and never be able to rely on the governmental system. So the people that attempted to break into the system were offered money to keep quiet and not tell any true stories to the media. Nixon gave speeches and presentations on how the staff were not the crime committers and that the people who did it were unknown. His voters and coworkers grew suspicious so they did a mini, untracked investigation. They found tape recordings of every conversation made in the Oval office; if people got ahold of those ... • 15. The Scandal Of The Enron Scandal Accounting is a necessary and vital part of maintaining any business, it is needed to file taxes, know how much one has in assets and liabilities, and indicate to investors whether the company would be a profitable undertaking. However, sometimes the accounting goes horribly wrong when people, even those who seem to be moral and uncorrubtable, fudge the numbers. By inflating books, they can get away with billions of dollars in fraud and make nice bonuses for themselves. However, these acts of greed affect not only the fraudulent person, but their families, coworkers, and other businesses. There are several ways massive accounting fraud has taken place in companies, from increasing depreciation, to not reporting debt, to right–out making up numbers to report. These frauds have been detected in multiple ways as well whistleblowers, internal audits, and even the fraudulent people themselves. The effect of these scandals have taken a heavy toll on businesses financially and on people involved emotionally. One scandal that had a lot of family involvement and heartache was the Bernie Madoff scandal in 2008. Bernie Madoff, along with his accountant David Friehling and Frank DiPascalli orchestrated the largest Ponzi scheme ever with his investment securities business. Madoff's company Ascot managed a diverse portfolio of clients, from high– profile multi–millionaires to hospitals to non–profits. • 17. The Watergate Scandal Essay While the effects of Watergate had far–reaching consequences for journalism, not everything to come out of the scandal came to be positive. As a result of the Watergate scandal many journalists try to find a Watergate like story even where there is none, Monicagate is a perfect example. In addition, many critics of the media argue since Watergate many people have become disenfranchised with Media's constant negativity. Another result of Watergate is the use of the media as a tool for political sabotage. Namely, the time and energy necessary to uncover the minutiae that Woodward and Bernstein found would not be available to reporters of today. The seemingly endless amount of stories the media covers today restrict the amount of time a news outlet has to devote to one story. Woodward and Bernstein spent a better part of eighteen months investigating Watergate. I imagine you would be hard–pressed to find an editor willing to let a journalist devote that much time to one story today. The money needed to fuel such an investigation would be just as hard to come up with as well. Many newspapers are bleeding from profit losses and such a lengthy investigation would no doubt cost an extreme amount of money. While other forms of media, namely television, have the vast resources to fund such an investigation, they hardly lend themselves to such a lengthy and exhausting inquiry. Sadly, stories like Watergate lack the necessary "flash" factor to be deemed worthy of televisions attention. Unless the story involves a celebrity or blood many news channels ignore actual news. The endless reports of Brittany Spears or "Bennifer" drown the real news of the day. For instance, the recent battles over the misdeeds of Tom Delay only get the slightest attention but we will no doubt hear every detail of Spears' pregnancy. The current president at the time was Richard M. Nixon, who was involved in the scandal himself and which lead to the cause of his resignation. The Watergate scandal should not have happened, but it did and it caused the American people to judge less of their government system. The scandal began on June 17, 1972, with the arrest of five men who were caught in the offices of the Democrat's campaign headquarters. Therefore, U.S. District Court Judge John Sirica ruled that President Nixon must give the tapes to Cox, and an appeals court upheld the decision. Richardson refused and resigned instead, as did Deputy Attorney General William Ruckelshaus. Finally, the solicitor general discharged Cox. Suddenly, a storm of public protest occurred, thus leading to the "Saturday Night Massacre." Nixon, in his defense, appointed another special prosecutor, Leon Jaworski, a Texas lawyer, and gave the tapes to Sirica. Unfortunately, some of the conversations were missing from the tapes and one tape had a mysterious gap of eighteen and a half minutes. Experts determined that the gap was the result of five separate erasures. After that evidence was uncovered, it became clear to the public that Nixon was indeed guilty. Although Nixon had ample evidence mounted against him to prove he was guilty, he did not get impeached because he officially resigned before the impeachment process could be done. A main reason that Nixon was found guilty is evidence uncovered by Frank Willis, at midnight on June 17, 1972. He was a security guard at the Watergate Complex and discovered adhesive tape over the latches of doors. He initially just took off the tape, and didn't really think much of it. However, he came back, and noticed that someone again had put tape over the doors. He grew suspicious and decided he would call the police. After the police arrived at the complex in D.C., there was an arrest made of five men. They were charged with attempted burglary and also other things dealing with the interception of telephone and other communications. One of the biggest political scandals to hit the United States of America was the Watergate scandal involving our very own President Richard Nixon. Nevertheless, she develops her further argument well as she explores the inextricable link between Character and Leadership. She elaborates on the inevitable failure of character in Enron leaders to resist illegal deals when the supervisors of those leaders were also engaging in side deals (pg 209). Her close attention to the underlying conflict of human traits and situations, aggravated by the magnitude of profits offered by the Enron culture justifies her statement, 'why it must have taken significant strength of character to resist getting on that gravy train' (pg 210). 3

  • 48. The Watergate Scandal The Watergate scandal during Richard Nixon's presidency was arguably the high point of journalism's role in American politics. What had been considered a rather inept burglary attempt upon Democratic party offices in the Watergate Hotel in Washington D.C. and was therefore ignored by most journalists when it happened was investigated by Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, until it was proven to be a criminal conspiracy whose organization and subsequent cover–up reached as high as the Oval Office. In terms of media coverage of the scandal, however, it is worth noting that while Woodward and Bernstein had access to a privileged source of information, whom they named only as "Deep Throat" (but much later revealed to be high–ranking FBI official W. Mark Felt), they were not the only reporters covering the scandal as it unfolded. By looking at other journalistic sources, it may be possible to get a larger view of how President Nixon dealt with the scandal, how public opinion and responded, and ultimately how Nixon was led to resign. The Watergate burglary occurred in June of 1972, since it was conducted as part of a strategic effort to undermine the Democratic Party's campaign to run against Nixon in the presidential election later that year. Nixon won the 1972 election in a landslide: any coverage of the scandal that occurred before November of 1972 was sufficiently unincriminating that it did not hamper his re–election campaign. Ideally, their main goal was to represent and satisfy the needs of the American people. Unfortunately, over the last fifty years, our trust in our administrative representatives has drastically declined. Beginning with the great conspiracy theory that President John F. Kennedy's assassination in 1963 was actually planned by political leaders, America had, for the first time in history, begun to question its faith in its very own government. Consequently, the American people became extremely hesitant when it came to electing officials into office. Despite his loss to JFK in the 1960 presidential election, in 1968, Richard M. It was not until 2005 when "Deep Throat" would reveal his identity as Mark Felt – the director of the FBI at the time of the Watergate Scandal ("The Watergate Story: The Post Investigates"). While the government was leading their investigation, it soon became public that John Mitchell, the current Attorney General who had previously denied any affiliation with the instances at Watergate, had been keeping a private account specifically intended for collecting information on the Democrats ("Mitchell Controlled Secret GOP Fund"). Through further investigation it was discovered by Alexander P. Butterfield, that President Nixon had made tape recordings of conversations with White House officials. When asked to release the tapes Nixon refused, saying that he had a constitutional right to keep the tapes confidential. He was later ordered by the court to hand over the tapes. Nixon offered to provide summaries of all the tapes, but his idea was rejected and he was again ordered to hand over the original tapes. Infuriated by the court's decision, he ordered his attorney general and his deputy attorney general to fire Cox. • 58. The Watergate Scandal Watergate, the greatest scandal of the 20th century, remains a shrouded mystery. Early on the morning of June 17, 1972, there was a break–in and several burglars were arrested inside the office of the Democratic National Committee's headquarters in the Watergate Office complex building located in Washington, D.C. Thus began a series of events that would shake the public's confidence in its most visible symbol of American authority and prestige: the presidency of Richard Nixon. A seemingly random robbery at a Washington, D.C. building leads to the first presidential resignation in American history. We will discuss the following events surrounding the Watergate break–in: when did the break–in occur, how was Nixon connected to the break–in. We will also discuss the events surrounding the discovery of the tapes, the issues involved in trying to get the tapes from President Nixon and what is the "18 1/2 minutes of silence". Finally, throughout this paper we will also include Archibald Cox the first Watergate special prosecutor. This was no ordinary robbery that happened on the morning of June 17, 1972. The burglars were connected to President Richard Nixon's reelection campaign, and the prowlers had been caught while attempting to wiretap phones and steal secret documents. The historians of this decade are not sure whether or not President Richard Nixon knew about the Watergate espionage operation before it happened. However, History.com states, President Nixon, okayed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Watergate Scandal The Watergate Scandal Essay written by Unknown The Watergate Scandal was a series of crimes committed by the President and his staff, who were found to spied on and harassed political opponents, accepted illegal campaign contributions, and covered up their own misdeeds. On June 17, 1972, The Washington Post published a small story. In this story the reporters stated that five men had been arrested breaking into the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee. The headquarters was located in a Washington, D.C., building complex called Watergate. These burglars were carrying enough equipment to wiretap telephones and take pictures of papers. The Washington Post had two reporters who researched deep into the story. There names were Carl ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... All of these aides forced Nixon to begin getting above Muskie in the elections. Overall, the Democratic nomination went to George McGovern, a liberal senator from South Dakota. His supporters included many people who supported the civil rights, anti–war, and environmental movements of the 1960s. McGovern had fought to make the nomination process more open and democratic. Congress had also passed the 26th amendment to the Constitution allowing eighteen– year–Olds to vote. As a result, the 1972 Democratic Convention was the first to include large numbers of woman, minorities, and young people among the delegates. McGovern's campaign ran into trouble early. The press revealed that his running mate, Thomas Eagleton, had once received psychiatric treatment. First McGovern stood by Eagleton. Then he abandoned him , picking a different running mate. In addition, many Democratic voters were attached to Nixon because of his conservative positions on the Vietnam War and law enforcement. Meanwhile, Nixon's campaign sailed smoothly along, aided by millions of dollars in funds. Nixon campaign officials collected much of the money illegally. Major corporations were told to contribute at least 100,000 dollars each. The collected much it clear that the donations could easily buy the companies influence with the White House. • 66. Watergate Scandal Essay Richard Nixon's time in the White House was, without a doubt, one of the most unusual presidencies in American history. Nixon quickly took a different approach from the men that came before him; although he entered office at a trying time for the American people, he insisted that the public needed the hard facts, not inspirational speeches. However, after winning the election Nixon gave in to his advisors' desires for an uplifting message, and promised the public that his administration would be committed to "bringing the American people together". While Nixon rarely repeated this message, and probably never meant it, Nixon did manage to unite the American people, just not in the way his advisors intended. The covert methods and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Once president, his disgust for the elite translated into a desire to prove that they "no longer possessed any character". He set out to do this by doing his best to shrink the liberal government that had developed in the year's prior and particularly rejoiced when his victim either had no idea who or how he was defeated. Unfortunately, however, the methods in which he used to bring his enemies down and to protect himself were often shady and underhanded. Perhaps the most shocking of which were the illegal activities included in the Watergate scandal. Nixon had a hand in not only selling ambassadorships; but also harassing the Democratic National Committee chairman Lawrence O'Brien, stealing files to blackmail retired presidents, and even putting spies in political groups he deemed radical. What would ultimately prove his downfall, however, would be the failed break–in attempt at the Democratic National Committee Headquarters in the Watergate complex. While Nixon may not have been aware of the specifics involved in the burglary plans, he had approved the Gemstone Plan under which the burglary was put into effect. The burglars were hired to break into the Committee's headquarters and bug the telephones so that Nixon would be able to determine who was contributing to the Democratic campaign and punish them as he saw fit. In A Scandal in Bohemia Holmes helps the King in retrieving an item from a previous relationship he had that ended unpleasantly. A Scandal in Bohemia takes the stance on showing the distinction between social class and the way women were treated. Social class was a problem and still is to this day. The separation of the rich and poor detached the people and left them in two separate worlds. The story intermingles the King of Bohemia with a middle–class woman named Irene Adler. This affair turned bad when he left her for a Scandinavian princess, so he wouldn't be shunned for marrying a woman of lower class. Even with him loving her, all because she was of middle–class he would and could not see a future with her. But the other problem lies with the treatment of women. The viewing down on them because of their gender bias. Now in our time, we can see the big change in how women were treated, but during the time Sherlock Holmes was written, this was relevant in his stories. We see this scattered in the story as Irene Adler, the female protagonist is viewed as less to the characters but is proven as "the best plans of Mr. Sherlock Holmes were beaten by a woman's wit." (Doyle 13) It's obvious to include this story as an outlet to show the wrongdoings of his time. For this, it allows readers to see what's erroneous and know what is happening around them. • 78. The Watergate Scandal "I Am Not a Crook": How One Scandalous Administration Impacted the Government There was a time where media and the government worked alongside each other in a symbiotic relationship, such as with President Franklin D. Roosevelt during his Fireside Chats in the midst of the Great Depression. Their job was to promote FDR and help him keep the American people informed on what he was getting done in Washington. Even if the media the president were on bad terms, prior to Nixon, journalism never really forged a large crusade to take down political leaders as they do now. In the wake of the Watergate scandal, however, that dynamic changed completely. Bob Woodward's and Carl Berstein's single–minded pursuit of the real perpetrators of Watergate ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Because of Watergate, contention and distrust sprung from people and still exist today. Prior to Watergate, the general public expressed content with the government and its policies, with the exception of the Vietnam War. During the Great Depression, people cherished and depended on the expansion of government because of the deplorable economic times, "the central idea was that government should protect people from the worst vagaries of a market economy" (The New American Consensus; Government of, by and For the Comfortable, 1998). Also Johnson's "Great Society" gained a lot of political clout was well. The steady decline in support for the government can undoubtedly be traced back to Nixon. After Gerald Ford assumed office struggled to move away from the Watergate incident and he felt the best way was by pardoning Nixon for all his transgressions. This had the opposite effect. The American people felt that he cheated the system or even more inexcusable, bargained to pardon Nixon if he became president. In this dark time, sprung an era where morality and ethics were important which explains the election of Jimmy carter who claimed "that he would clean up the 'cesspool' Washington had become and restore a sense of morality in the white House...." (2006, p.24). Even though he spouted his famous phrase, "I will never tell a lie" his inability to restore the economy and ineffectiveness as a president furthered the dissent that the Americans had with the government (Economy Is Not Only Problem Facing Cater, 1997). In fact since Nixon's Resignation there has been a broad downward trend from fifty–three percent in 1972 to twenty–four percent in 2013 (Public Trust in Government: 1958–2014, 2014).
