- Kodak was a brand that had been associated with photography for over a century The company was founded in 1888 by a man named George Eastman In 1975 a Kodak engineer actually invented the digital camera but the product was dropped for fear it would threaten Kodak’s film business In 1976 Kodak had a 90% market share of photographic film sales and 85% market share of the camera sales in the US Despite inventing most of the components of the digital camera and attempting to embark on a digital strategy in 1990, the digital strategy was never fully implemented In 2012 the company filed for bankruptcy
- So why do companies like Kodak fail? The “Turnaround Management Society” asked 405 turnaround managers and restructuring experts: “What are the most common internal causes for a corporate crisis that you have experienced?” While some of the answers overlap, they point to the root causes of failure: “Management held onto strategies that were” --- Kodak believed film based photography for consumers and commercial uses, such as, health care would continue unabated “Management did not want to adapt” --- even after seeing the movement to digital, Kodak never really fully committed to a digital strategy “Management had not vision” --- Kodak was not able to see how digital photography would revolutionize the imaging business How many Communications Service Providers (CSPs) seen the movement to mobile, digital, or the impact OTT’s have had on the customer’s experience and are in denial regarding the impact on their business?

- Parlay Group Founded in 1998 and ended in 2007 Goal to enable service creation by non-telecom experts Parlay API API independent of underlying telephony network technology (e.g. CDMA, GSM, landline SS7). Parlay X Much simpler set of APIs intended to be used by a larger community of developers. Parlay X is now defunct and has now been replace by OneAPI standard from GSMA WAC included AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, Deutsche Telecom, China Mobile, Orange, and others. Two aspects: Build an application once, run it on any carrier, OS or device. HTML-based Apps – unable to access device hardware The group also developed network API technology – most importantly payment API’s After two years in operation WAC was folded into GSMA and the assets were sold to a third party The network API activities continue under GSMA
- Consolidate platform (3 platforms to 1) for enterprise and consumer voice services, enabling new services and IMS, for several countrues from one country, to reduce the cost and shortern TTM Partner with leading IoT industry product companies (Healthcare, Logistics, Intelligent home, Retail, Finance) 2) Enable partners to easily create tailored services. API:s for exposure of network enablers Positioning Charging Customer behaviour, presence, calender, network status..) API:s for creation of IoT applications, Business process engines etc 3) Focus on business creation, buy SaaS from a Telco Cloud solution provider
