The problems we have come across during the filming and editing process
1. PROBLEMS/ERRORS
SPOTTED AFTER FILMING
Although we are
struggling to keep up and
catch up with the rest of
our class, we are still
hopeful that our music
video is going to turn out
well.
2. ERROR 1: CAMERA TILTED &
DODGY
The market scene shots were not filmed very well and need to be redone
for the following reasons:
•The camera was tilted for the midshot of feet (Conor walking towards
the market). Personally, I think this was because we didn’t hold the fig
rig properly. We should’ve held it from both sides instead of just the
top.
•The market was closing during our filming which was around 3pm and
so we were in a rush, we had to film everything quickly.
•We haven’t managed to film all the shots from the storyboard due to the
disruption in the market (kiosks were closing).
•One mistake was that we focused on re-filming a few shots for a
number of times rather than moving on to the next ones. So this wasted
some time as the shots didn’t even turn out well.
3. ERROR 2: WAREHOUSE SCENE
TOO DULL
• Although we did use some lighting, our idea of having a dark room to create a dull
atmosphere has failed.
• I have suggested that we should have the cellar lights on during our filming, but
one member of our group thought the lighting was perfectly fine. They thought
that because our music video was sad then we should have dark lighting. However
One Republic’s music video counting stars was filmed in a warehouse and they had
full lighting.
• The technician influenced our decision as well into using dark lighting as the lights
in the cellar are neon lights and they appear differently on screen.
• Our main base track is the mid shot of the performers singing (Conor and Jamie)
with the instruments. The lighting focused on Jamie rather than Conor which is the
star performer of the band. This is a problem as it is essential to show who the
main character is via Mise En Scene. Media language is the only way in which the
artist could (one way) communicate with their audience.
• The close ups we have filmed are very good but we have decided that we should
keep the lights on next time we film. This means that we are no longer going to be
using any of our previous shots. Hopefully it is going to be a lot easier to film next
time because we know the exact type of shots that we need to film.
4. ERROR 3: LIPSYNCING
•Apparently, the performers were not told that they should learn the lyrics.
This has messed up our filming schedule as we did not have any more time
to waste. We spent most of the time printing the song lyrics on A3 sheets
and singing along to the lyrics so the performers could learn it.
•We have run out of time as we only had an hour and a half to film. On the
day Isaac was responsible for bringing the guitar. However he came with his
friends without the prop, so me and Rizwana had to run to the music
department to ask for permission to borrow a few instruments for this
filming session. This means that we still have to ask for permission for the
next time we film (Wednesday 23rd November 16 at1:15-3pm).
•Another problem that I was responsible for was that I didn’t have time to re-
do the storyboard before filming started but I did have a brief shotlist for
filming that’s taking place in this location. Although some of us had a rough
idea of what we needed to do for the warehouse scenes, some of us
disagreed and decided that we should only have one base track.
•Towards the end of filming I decided to take control and film some close ups
because that was what's on our storyboard. We had to at least follow some
shots of the storyboard.
5. PROBLEM 4: ONLY HAVE ACCESS
TO
COLLEGE CELLAR AT SPECIFIC
TIMES•This is the college cellar on the right, which is in the basement. We
have asked for permission to film there however, we have to be
supervised by either the technician or our media teacher. This
restricted us from filming during our spare time.
•We have to be supervised as the place is only for storage which
means anything could fall on us and its not very safe for students.
•We were only allowed to film during lesson times (on a Wednesday
afternoon 1:15-3 or Friday morning 9-12pm)
•One of the main issues as to why we couldn’t film immediately after
we finished planning was because our performers were not available
during the times we were supposed to film. One of our performers
works in the morning, thus its impossible for us to film on our Friday
morning lessons (3 hour lesson). Also they live very far away which
made it very difficult
6. PROBLEM 5: NOT ENOUGH
FOOTAGE
•When it came to editing we have realised that our footage was not
enough and we did not take any Mise en scene aspects into
consideration.
•I think having a variety of shot types does increase the amount of
footage we have. Clearly the reason why we don’t have as much
footage is because we do not have a variety of shot types/ e.g. a
variety of close ups. Most of our shots seem to be the easy and quick
ones which reflects our current situation. We aren’t able to find the
perfect time where non of us are busy, to solve this we need to split
up and sort the timing out with Conor and Jamie.
7. TARGETS
POSITIVES
•Although we have
found it difficult
editing without
having footage of
our main base
tracks e.g.
warehouse scenes
we have managed
to locate which
shots are going to
located where.
•There was one
shot that our
teacher thought
was filmed very
well (in the
market scene)
IMPROVEMENTS
•We have made a few
improvements as we’ve made
sure that Conor and Jamie both
are free on the 23rd of November
where warehouse scene filming is
going to be taking place at 1:15-
3.
•We have prepared 2 visitor
passes for them
•We found it very difficult to
arrange a filming session to
record the flashback scenes. So
Isaac suggested that he could
film them together on a night
out. (if this did not work for the
rough cut, we might need to see
them and film anywhere around
college)
