Dr. Steven Scott from the University of Toronto says that advances in marine geology and deep ocean technology have made mining more than two kilometers underwater for gold and other minerals realistic. While this type of deep sea mining has evoked concerns about environmental impacts, Dr. Scott believes it could be less destructive than terrestrial mining. Currently, the first two deep sea mining companies, Nautilus Minerals and Neptune Minerals, are actively exploring deposits in territorial waters off New Zealand and Papua New Guinea.
