2. What makes up the
Solar System?
A solar system is made of a star and the objects
that orbit around it.
A planet is a large object that orbits a star.
A moon is a natural object that orbits a planet.
All but 2 planets in our solar system have
one or more moons.
3. From nearest to farthest from the Sun the
planets are:
Mercury
Venus
Earth
Mars
Jupiter
Saturn
Uranus
Neptune
4.
5. Different types of small objects are present in
space.
An asteroid is a rock that revolves around the
sun.
Most of the thousands of asteroids in the Solar
System are located between Mars and Jupiter
in the asteroid belt.
6.
7. What are the inner planets?
Inner Planets
Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars
Common characteristics:
- rocky surfaces - often called terrestrial planets
- orbits spaced close together
- few or no moons
- none of them have rings
8.
9. What are the outer planets?
Outer Planets
Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune
Common Characteristics:
- made mostly of gas
- has a metallic core and a thick atmosphere
- much larger than the inner planets
- orbits are farther apart than the inner planets
- all have rings and many moons
- spin very rapidly on their axes so a day on an
outer planet is very short
