General Information I Revolve: A small object revolving around a bigger object Rotate: An object spinning on its axis 8 planets have been found in our solar system Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars are the inner planets Jupiter , Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune are the outer planets The differences between inner and outer planets are that they are separated by the asteroid belt, and the inner planets are closer to the Sun, are smaller, are solid spheres of rock, and are often bombarded by asteroids and meteoroids while the outer planets are further away from the Sun, bigger, and are less often attacked by asteroids and meteoroids

General Information II More craters are found on the inner planet because they were constantly bombarded by asteroids and meteoroids during their first 600 million years in existence Orbit: A specific path followed by a planet , satellite, etc. 3 requirements to be considered a planet are that the object has to orbit around the sun, have enough mass so that it becomes round due to its own gravity , and have cleared out of its orbit path around sun . A dwarf planet is the class of object that meets the first two requirements but no the third The 3 dwarf planets are Pluto, Ceres, and Eris.

4. Mercury (Inner planet) Mercury’s atmosphere is caused by its extremely high temperature. 2 elements that can be found in Mercury’s atmosphere are helium and sodium The 3 processes that shaped Mercury are impact cratering, volcanism, and tectonic activity

Venus (Inner planet) Venus is referred to as the “Evening Star" because it is the brightest star that can be viewed from Earth. 2 elements that can be found in the atmosphere are CO2 and sulfuric acid Retrograde rotation is rotating slowly on it axis in a clockwise direction A day on Venus is longer than a year on Venus because one rotation takes 243 Earth days when one orbit takes 225 days The Sun appears to rise in the west when you are standing on Venus because the planet rotates clockwise Venus is the hottest planet in our solar system because its denso atmosphere traps heat

Earth (Inner planet) The elements that make up our atmosphere are O2, nitrogen, argon, and 0.1% of many other elements 2 things that our atmosphere protect us from are meteors and harmful solar radiations Rotational tilt of the Earth is 23.5 degree The magnetic field is produces by the rapid spin of the Earth along with the molten metallic core The satellite of the Earth is the Moon

Mars (Inner planet) The evidence that scientists have to life on Mars is that the scientists studied meteorites from Mars and found bacteria and other signs that life may have existed The primary element of the atmosphere is CO2 The planet appear to be red because the surface is covered with iron-laden clay Olympus Mons is the tallest mountain in the solar system, and is located in Mars The 2 satellites of Mars are Phobos and Deimos

Jupiter (Outer planet) The planet’s rotation affects the shape of Jupiter by flattening at the poles and bulge at the equator Jupiter’s atmosphere is made up with helium, sulfur, ni trogen, and hydrogen The Giant Red Spot is a hurricane-like storm that has been seen in Jupiter's southern hemisphere since Jupiter was first discovered Jupiter has 50 natural satellites Something interesting about Jupiter’s satellite lo is that it is volcanically active

Saturn (Outer planet) The elements that make up Saturn’s atmosphere are hydrogen and helium The reason that Saturn has rings is because developed from particles that resulted from the break-up of naturally occurring satellites The compo sition of the rings are water ice and dust Saturn cou ld float in water because it has such low density The season last 7 years on Saturn

10. Uranus (Outer planet) Uranus’s rotation is different because of its 98 degree tilt, it appears to be rotating on its side Elements that make up it atmosphere are hydrogen, helium, and methane Uranus has 27 known satellites

11. Neptune (Outer planet) The elements that make up Neptune’s atmosphere are ammonia, helium, and methane Uranus has 13 known satellites Triton is the larges satellite. Astronomers believe it became a satellite by being captured by Neptune’s gravitational pull

12. Pluto (Dwarf planet) Pluto’s 3 moons are Charon, Nix, and Hydra With a spectroscope, scientists learned that methane frost on Pluto and water frost on Charon. Pluto’s moon Charon is unusual by it might share an atmosphere with Pluto and it appears to be more blue in color than Pluto

13. Ceres (Dwarf planet) One revolution is around 4.6 Earth years Ceres w as once considered as an asteroid because it did not fit in t he definitio n of planet On Ceres’ s surface you can find mixture of water, ice, carbonates, and clays

14. Eris (Dwarf planet) Eris’s original name was Xena Eris takes 557 Earth years to orbit the sun Eris’s moon ’s n ame is Dysnomia Eris isn’t considered to be a planet because it doesn’t clear out its orbit
