The Pros And Cons Of Standardized Testing
There is a major controversy over standardized achievement testing that has now called for students,
parents, educators, and communities to become involved. The United States is lacking in education
from a worldwide viewpoint. The United States currently ranks 17th among 50 other global
education systems (Gayathri). If America continues to fall behind, then the educational gap
between races will continue to expand. Is the solution to the United States falling behind globally?
It s to increase standardized tests.
Standardized tests play a major role in education today, whether they are achievement tests
measuring subject specific knowledge or aptitude tests measuring scholastic readiness. The goal of
the assessments is to provide a yardstick to evaluate student performance across state standards.
(Concordia University Portland 2017)
The No Child Left Behind Act and the Common Core State Standards Initiative are prominent
examples of test based accountability policies. The practice has ignited a debate about their
effectiveness and how well this kind of test measures student achievement. (Concordia University
Portland 2017)
A standardized test is an examination that s scored and administered in a predetermined manner.
(Popham 1999) Present day, standardized test is ...any objective test, or combination of objective
and performance tests, that yields the same score for the same performance, no matter who is doing

Aptitude Test Chapter Summaries
The story begins on the day of the Aptitude test, a specific test that helps members of a futuristic
society, choose a faction out of the five faction Abnegation (the selfless), Amity (the kind and
peaceful), Dauntless (the brave and fearless), Erudite (the intelligent), and Candor (the honest).
Sixteen year old Beatrice Prior is warned not to inform anyone about her testresult not even her
family, because she is divergent. On the day of the choosing ceremony, the day all sixteen year olds
decide their future, Beatrice s thought are drowned in confusion. She can t decide which faction to
choose, since the Aptitudetest didn t help her, but she finally chooses the Dauntless. To get to the
Dauntless compound the initiates have to have to jump off a roof and into an underground tunnel.
Beatrice decides to change her name to Tris after she jumps off the roof as the first initiate to jump.
The transfer initiates are given a tour of the compound, once they reach the dormitories, one of the
Dauntless leaders, Eric, tells them only ten of the initiates will become members at the end of
initiation, the rest will become factionless. This is when Tris realizes that as the... Show more

divergent and that he will eradicate all of the proof, but she has to endeavor to hide it during the
simulations. Tris gets terrified and goes to her aptitude test administrator to find out about
divergence. When Tris gets ranked first for second stage, she sees Peter s anger and frustration

Emancipationawassone Of The American Civil War
Emancipationawassone of the most profound consequences of the American Civil War.
During and after the war, about four million enslaved African Americans in the United
States became free persons. This generation had a significant influence on American history, an
influence that has yet to be fully recognized. During this remarkable period of transition, former
slaves stabilized their family lives, sought to control their work environments, established their
own schools and churches, and participated in public life as citizens. While these goals may
appear straightforward to us today, they were anything but simple to achieve at the time. The
transition from slavery to freedom was as extraordinary as it was complex. Newly freed African
Americans experienced both boundless joy and excruciating disappointment as they established
themselves as free persons. Freed people frequently encountered violent resistance to their efforts to
become paid workers and active citizens. Many white southerners refused to accept former slaves
as free persons.
The state of Tennessee provides a particularly rich case study of the transition from slavery to
freedom during the Civil War and Reconstruction. Second only to Virginia in the number of
skirmishes and battles on its soil, Tennessee was at the heart of the conflict between North and
South. The chaos of war visited many Tennessee communities and served to break down the bonds
that kept 275,000 individuals enslaved. Most Tennessee

The Pros And Cons Of The Western Union
Why has Western Union been able to adapt to severe disruptions and survive over so many years?
It never confused the business it was in with the way it conducted its business. At its core, Western
Union was about facilitating person to person communications and money transfers whether via
telegraph, wireless networks, phone, or the Internet. We always saw ourselves as a
communications company, says President Christina Gold. Contrast that with Kodak. By defining
itself too narrowly as a product company all those years, it was headed for a fall.
Kodak teetered on the precipice and with it stands some of the other once great businesses of the
20th century, from autos to newspapers. They were immensely successful and proud, but their very
success made it difficult to adjust. The more successfully you use a way of working, the stronger
your culture is, which is a great strength right up to the time when you need to change, says Clayton
Christensen, a professor at Harvard Business School.

iPod, a must have device for music fans, and iTunes, an online music shop that turned music

more profound than that: In essence, it switched from being a great designer of computer

music represents 44% of Apple s revenues, and an even larger share of profits. If Kodak focused on

What Is The Five Mutual Funds
In this report, we intend to observe, select, and critically analyze five mutual funds and produce
an optimally risky portfolio. After thorough evaluation, we agreed upon the following mutual
funds; Vanguard PRIMECAP Fund (VPMCX), Harbor Small Cap Value Fund (HASCX),
Vanguard Tax Managed Capital Appreciation Fund (VTCIX), Victory RS Small Cap Growth Fund
(RSYEX), and Allianz GI NFJ Mid Cap Value Fund (PQNCX). We selected these particular funds
due to historical performance and future growth potential. We used the Standard and Poor s 500
Index (S P 500) and the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) as our benchmarks to evaluate and
determine performance and returns. We selected these mutual fundstyles based on the Morningstar s

Part 1: Descriptive Data and Summary Statistics of the Five Mutual Fund
Table 1:
We selected 5 mutual funds that have 80% of more invested in stock equity securities in the mutual
fund. The 5 mutual funds all have different investment styles according to Morningstar. The
investment objective defines what each mutual fund s long term goals are. It includes things such
as required return, the risk tolerance, and investment time horizon. The investment style is the
different strategy used to set asset allocation of the mutual fund. It sets expectations for long term
portfolio performance. For example, VTICX focuses on large blend, where HASCX focuses on
small blend; meaning that they will target different portfolio asset allocations. Each fund will
allocate its funds differently and in different proportions. The investment strategy is a set of rules,
behaviors or procedures designed to guide an investor s selection of an investment portfolio. For
example, VTICX looks into stocks that pay lower dividends and are included in the Russell 1000
Index so they can provide a tax efficient investment return consisting of long term capital
appreciation. Behind every capital investment there is a strategy. Arithmetic mean returns are the
total average of the returns for the last ten years (07 16) of

Deborah Tannen s I Only Say This Because I Love You, And...
Introduction Interpersonal conflicts are inevitable. Different texts suggest not how to avoid
conflict, but rather how to effectively communicate when involved in one. However, the rules of
constructive communication can completely change in conflicts between people in long term,
interdependent relationships. This paper will focus on analyzing a conversation between a mother
and her adult son, while applying ideas from William Wilmot and Joyce Hocker s Interpersonal
Conflict, Deborah Tannen s I Only Say This Because I Love You, and the Conflict Styles lecture.

He does so in a way that is assertive rather than aggressive. Instead of aggressively pushing his
thoughts onto Dianne without explanation, Earl works towards achieving his desired goals by
openly expressing his frustration as a response to his mother s commands. In conjunction with his
dominant conflict style, he threatens, the more you tell me to, the more I won t, which qualifies as
a threat, because it meets the two required criteria. First, the source of the threat must control the
outcome. Earl controls the outcome of the situation since he has the ability to either obey or
disobey Dianne. Secondly, the threat must be seen as negative by the recipient. In this case, the
recipient Dianne sees the condition of Earl s comment as negative since she will not get her way
(Wilmot and Hocker, 159). Earl uses the threat in an attempt to put an end to his mother s current
and future demands. However, the use of a threat begs the question, what is gained? Although Earl
solves his immediate issue of changing the sheets at his own convenience, he risks leaving the
bigger problem unresolved and damaging the relationship with his mother (Wilmot and Hocker,
160). After this one instance, Dianne may feel the need to force

Michelangelo Buonarroti s The Last Judgement Michelangelo Buonarroti. One of the greatest
artists of all time. A man whose name has become synonymous with the word Masterpiece. The
second of five brothers, Michelangelo was born on March 6, 1475 at Caprese in Tuscany. His
mother died young and when he was six he was placed with a wet nurse, in a family of stone
cutters. His father realized how smart the boy was, he quickly put him in school, and there he
learned and studied Latin. While at school he met Francesco Granacci, who was six years older

In order to show the tragedy of the great moment, Michelangelo imprints almost fatal movement on
the humanity which gathers around Jesus. The battle of the Centaurs was a reflection of the
scheme of the battles of Alexander from Greek sculptures. In the judgement, the ancient idea of
destiny and the Nemeses imprint on composition an archaic expressive value which renews, the
decision of fates. There is an monumental female figure, strongly modeled in the clouds in the
left of the painting. She turns toward Christ, the judge and seizes a young girl who clasped her
around the waste as an act of protection .( Abrams pg.107 Michelangelo the painter) The two
figures are on the edge of a cloud strip which serves as a sculptured base. In Michelangelo s
work, the bodies pass from the sluggishness that joins them with the earth from which they rise
with a great deal of difficulty, almost painfully. The ascent is carried out as a rescue in a joining
between the colossal nudes .(Chadwick pg.324)They are still wrapped in laziness and falling

The Electoral College System Is Outdated And Unfair
Every year on the fourth of November an election is taken place to select the next president of the
United States. Just recently, in the 2016 election, Hilary Clinton won the popular vote and Donald
Trump won the electoral vote, in which he was elected president. This made many Americans
question if the electoral collegesystem is outdated and unfair and if the direct popular vote is a
more effective way of electing the president. This has happened twice where the candidate who has
the popular vote did not win the presidency. The problem that has arisen is that the rules of the
presidential election need to be replaced so that it will reflect the true opinion of the U.S. citizens.
According to Edwards III, under the constitution, the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Every state has two senators and the number of representatives that is proportional to its
population (Schumaker 12). Congress decides who they want to dictate how many electors each
state has based it off of the state s population (Edwards 14). The Constitution requires that winning
candidate must have 270 of the Electoral College votes. For instance, during the 2004 election,
Bush had collected 271 electoral votes if he had two fewer votes and Gore two more than both of
the candidates would have had fifty percent of the Electoral College votes (Schumaker 12).
What is a popular vote? A popular vote is a way for a candidate to get a majority of votes for an
election. The citizens of the U.S. vote on a presidential candidate.
How was the Electoral College Founded? The Electoral College was constructed to be a
compromise between the different ways of selecting the president. Originally the delegates of the
Constitutional Convention wanted Congress to select eh president, while others preferred the
direct popular election (Schumaker 13). While the Constitutional Convention proceeded, one of
the founders established a Committee of the Eleven to create a compromise for selecting the
president (Schumaker 13). The reason for the idea of the Electoral College many opposed to the
direct popular vote because people feared that the less popular vote would feel inferior to other
states (Schumaker 13). This method was widely accepted there was

Literary Devices Used In The Book Anthem

flowing and interesting for the reader. Those same techniques are also used to express a hidden
message that the reader can interpret in their own way. Setting is one of those techniques that
plays an important role in the book. The setting helps with character development, unfold the
plot, and create suspense. As the story progresses, the reader is able to understand what kind of
world the main character, Equality 7 2521, lived in. The setting places them in a world that is
supposed to be considered to be perfect where everyone is treated equally. The reality that he lived

Educating Afghan Girls Education
Educating Afghan Girls
Education is one of the most important contributors to having a successful future. In developed
countries such as North America boys and girls are fortunate enough to have access to an unbiased
education system. Therefore, allowing children to have countless opportunities. However, in
countries like Afghanistan girls are marginalized and neglected the right to learn. Afghanistan is a
country of war, where women and girls are often the worst victims. In 2011, Afghanistan was
known as the most dangerous place in the world for a girl to be born (Kissane). Malala Yousufzai,
a female education activist was also a victim of war. Yousufazi was shot in the head and neck for
advocating for girls and their rights to have access to education. Similarly, to Yousufzai many
women in Afghanistan stand up for their entitlement to having equality. Those courageous women
often become victims of abuse and are often killed. Investing in girls education is critical, not
only is it life altering for a girl s future, but it s also poses benefits to society. By allowing Afghan
girls access to educating we are also promoting better socioeconomic s, a reduction in child
marriages, and an improvement in mortality rates.
Afghanistan is one of the poorest countries in the world. Three decades of war has subjected
Afghans to harsh living conditions. Leaving most with insufficient resources to survive. Many
women are left widowed, and are obligated to provide for their families,

the exhibit is. The exhibit about the Dust Bowl is in a good location because it is in the library
where most students go daily. The location can also be considered a bad location because it is
not easily seen from the door and one has to be looking for it to find it. The exhibit should be

Setting Clear Boundaries in the Social Work Field
Setting Clear Boundaries In Social Work Many individuals opt for the field of social work so
that others may grow and improve their way of life and have a stable living style. However,
while providing this sort of help to the clients, it is important that social workers are aware of
their ethical boundaries and have communicated this to their clients as well. Setting and
maintain clear boundaries is a very important part of every profession. As far as social work is
concerned where the worker directly influences the lives of his clients, this practice becomes
more important as it has a direct impact on ones professional integrity. Where we see number of
complaints filed against the social workers for breach of ethical boundaries, it is important to
understand what these limitations are and how to adhere to them. In order to understand the
concept of setting clear boundaries, let s have a look at what Dietz and Thompson said about it.
As per them, The concern about appropriate boundaries is, at least in part, a concern about the
effects of the power differential between client and professional. It is primarily a concern about
boundary violations (Dietz and Thompson, 2004, p. 2). In addition to it, it is important to realize
that boundaries provide us safer connections based on the needs of clients we are dealing with
(Peterson, 1992, p. 74). Now that we are aware of what boundaries really are, it is also vitally
significant about what constitutes a breach and how

Synthesis Essay-Survival Is Insufficient
Survival is Insufficient
What makes you human? Functioning organs and flowing blood would be a good answer but
outside of that what actually makes you human? It s the interactions that you make with others. It s
you not just surviving, but it s you living. When it comes down to the end of the day and you think
back you will realize that survival is not enough.
Even though you may not see it right away this same thought process is put in a lot of texts. One is
example is Teeth. This is a poem about how a boy has one American grandfather and one Japanese
grandfather. The American grandfather bombed Japanese homes, where the Japanese grandfather

LEADERSHIP Leadership is the art of getting someone else to do something you want done,

is crucial part of today s army and leaders play a huge role in the accomplishment of the mission.
I believe this is true, because leaders are the guys who are in close contact with the younger
soldiers. They are the ones who counsel the soldiers and make them better and make a plan for
that soldier to improve and become a better soldier. Leaders play a major role in the

Film Analysis Of The Film 12 Angry Men
This essay will explore the Oscar winning United artist film 12 Angry Men directed by Sydney
Lumet; with a thorough evaluation of how successfully the narrative reflects tensions in 1950s
America. 12 Angry Men is renowned for its strong linear narrative and the ability to obtain the
attention of the audience with the use of only one mise en scene. The 1957 courtroom drama was
established around the key theme of Politics and the battle between communism and capitalism in
1950s America; with a traditional Hollywood Narrative being sustained throughout, enabling a
powerful and persuasive style. 12 angry meninitiate with an introductory scene, displaying external
architecture of the New York County Courthouse which sets the scene for the rest of the film by
highlighting the importance of the location. When brought inside, the audience is introduced to the
12 jurors, through a camera pan from right to left, to show their importance as they remain the key
focus for the entirety of the film. With a high camera angle introduction of the main suspect, a
young underprivileged Hispanic boy, whose life depends on the white men who sit before him.

There are many nostalgic ideas of the 1950s that often create images of happiness; not far from
those depicted in blockbusters such as Randal Kleiser s Grease (1959) and Walter Lang s Cheaper

Globalization
It is summer in Ghana and I m walking down a block in my neighborhood. The air is hazy and
dense and the smell of food fills every corner. A city that never used to have any of foreign foods,
now filled with the aroma and signs of fast food restaurants. As I walked, I realize that there was
only one whole food market. Meanwhile, a McDonald s and Kentucky Fried Chicken were seen
on multiple corners. Another thing I noticed: the majority of people entering the fast food market
are from places that were once filled with only traditionalists. A region where its former citizens
used to invest their time in cooking local traditional food and sold them to the public and families.
These same communities have now become so westernized that they neglect the traditional side of
diet. Instead, everyone now focus on the new fast food market. People are flocking with their
families into the fast food restaurants. Watching the differences between those who entered the
supermarket and those who entered the McDonalds s, I couldn t help but think about
complications minorities in the United States face from the fast food market. I made a very quick
connection with the United States because I had an idea of how people in the US especially
minorities, suffer from fast food. Some people (fast food victims) in Ghana aren t any better than

given effective leadership. However, I did notice a similar trait in all the effective leaders that I
have worked with. They all possess excellent interpersonal skills that enable them to understand
their followers sources of motivation to work. From a cultural perspective, I believe that this is my

Essay about Socrates’ Trial Defense in Terms of His Values
Socrates Trial Defense in Terms of His Values
In his Apology, Plato recounted the trial that led to the execution of his friend and mentor, Socrates.
The account revealed that values of Socrates accusers and his own fundamentally differed, and that
they had been angered because he tried to prove that they had misplaced theirs. Those differences
created conflict between the two parties that culminated in his trial. With the understanding that a
jury condemned Socrates to death and his defense nevertheless pleased him because he gave it
truthfully, it is most sensible to call it a good defense because he felt it was the best that he could do.
In reply to the first charge against him, Socrates effectively ... Show more content on

Had people believed that Socrates in fact had no wisdom, his reputation would not have become
so bad and his defense would have been more likely to succeed. He explained, however that
individuals whom he criticized took offense at him and grew angry because they felt that he had
more wisdom than they did. ...I am called wise, for my hearers always imagine that I myself
possess the wisdom which I find wanting in others: but the truth is, O men of Athens, that God only
is wise; and in this oracle he means to say that the wisdom of men is little or nothing... (Plato, 5)
While that statement would not have convinced many people that Socrates lacked wisdom, it
succeeded at presenting the idea that the oracle meant the wisdom of people is little or nothing.
That likely benefited him among his supporters and some neutral jurors because they could have
believed that Socrates mission had been to show that people lacked wisdom compared to gods
rather than that he had more wisdom than others did. Among people who disliked him or who took
pride in their wisdom, the argument would not have helped him; they wouldn t have believed in the
piety of his mission and they would have thought that it proved the superiority of his wisdom to
theirs.
Socrates then defended the second charge against him with logical arguments and facts of Athenian
society, both of which made this part of his overall defense

The International Accounting Standards Board
Introduction
Over the past few decades there has been a significant transformation in the global financial
structure. These remarkable changes are a result of increasing global competition, changes in
business and political climate, increasing technological advancements etc. Globalization in
particular has given the corporations and individual borrowers to look beyond the borders for
finance and investment opportunities. In order to protect these investors and to maintain the market
integrity a financial reporting framework was developed. This framework ensures high quality of
financial reporting and true and fair representation of general information for the users of financial

board is also responsible for the International Financial Reporting standards (Ready ratios, 2010).
The process for setting these standards comprises of certain stages such as: setting the agenda,
planning, developing the discussion paper and exposure draft and finally setting the standard. After
issuing the standards the board members hold meetings to discuss and review whether there are any

Trustees (Members of the IASB, 2007). It is the main standard setter for the countries that use IASs
for their financial reporting. USA on the other hand has its own set of standards (GAAP) issued by
the Financial Accounting Standards Board. But IASB and FASB since 2002 have been working
together focusing on making a converged set of high quality global standards. This will have a huge

Gabriel Garcia Marquez Research Paper
Gabriel Garcia Marquez was born in the town of Aracataca, Colombia in 1927 according to
bio.com. Growing up, Marquez spent the first few years of his life living with his parents and his
maternal grandparents, Colonel Nicolas Marquez and Tranquilina Iguaran de Marquez. After the
death of Nicolas, the family then moved to Barranquilla. Marquez achieved a higher education in
the area of law, but he continued to follow his dream and become a journalist; at the time, he started
writing during a murderous upheaval in Colombiaknown as La Violencia (BIO.com). He claimed

This man tends to be surrounded by amazing and unbelievable events, starting from when the
newborn boy of Pelayo and his wife, Elisenda, fights off his grave sickness. This continues to
show through the next several years of the story. The old man brings, although skewed, miracles
to the villagers. One man, hoping to cure his blindness, grew 3 new teeth. A cripple, wanting to
walk again, almost won the lottery. A leper even sprouted sunflowers from their sores. These
consolation miracles , as Marquez described them in his story, also ended the popularity of the
old man and stopped the flow of people into the family s land. This event not only allowed the
family to rebuild their house from the money they raised but also cured Father Gonzaga s
insomnia. The old man s wings also play a huge role in showing that he is a good person. Wings
represent many different things across many different cultures but in Christianity, which is the
main religion expressed in this story, wings can be described as the light of the Sun of Justice
that shows the intelligence of the Just (Albornoz, Fernandez). If the old man is an angel, as the
villagers believe, then his wings should exhibit this. Angels should also exhibit strong goodwill
towards the living. The winged man shows more of the attitude of angels though his patience.
He never gets mad at the people who travel from around the world to see him no matter what
they do to him. From people picking his feathers from his wings to people burning his side with
a steer branding tool. This patience is almost on the level of a god or deity. Whatever the case is,
the old man stays very passive toward the people and never hurts or rebels against his captors or
others, only helping

Specifically, the study will seek to answer the following questions: 1. Would it be possible to make
a homemade bouncy polymer from a simple polymer found in white PVA glue and corn starch? 2.
Which of the following ratio will produce the best homemade bouncy polymer? 3. What would be
the effect of the varying ratio of the ingredients on the physical characteristics of the homemade
bouncy polymer? SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY Science is fun. It cannot only be learned in
the four corners of the classroom but rather it can also be learned at home. Chemistry can be a very
intimidating subject that is hard for some students to understand. This project study would like to
help demonstrate some basic principles of chemistry. Specifically, this project study will help
students understand that there is a difference between a physical change and a chemical change.
Silly putty, as well as bouncing polymer is fascinating and educational. It can teach everyone about
Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics.

The Ram Psychoanalysis
A psychoanalytical model of media analysis focuses on the conscious and unconscious processes
of social interactions (Berger 69). An individual s mind can be compared to an iceberg. The
visible part of the iceberg, the tip, is what a person is conscious of, while the larger part of the
iceberg, which is hidden under the water, is what a person is unconscious of. Sigmund Freudonce
stated that what is in your mindis not identical with what you are conscious of, whether something
is going on in your mind and whether you hear of it, are two different things (Berger 70). Freud is

The Pros And Cons Of Capitalism
On December 25, 1991, the hammer and sickle of the Soviet Union lowered for the last time.
After 69 years of enjoying a place in history as a world superpower, the massive territory dissolved
into 12 independent states. The Bush administration watched in awe as their main enemy crumbled
to dust. This was another victory for freedom, democracy, and capitalism. Communism, which lives
by the abolition of private property, is the exact opposite of capitalism, where individuals own their
own property and make money dependent on how much they work. There have been very few
communist countries, and all have been lead by dictators. Which form of economy is better? On
one end of the economic spectrum is capitalism. Capitalism is attributed to the Western world and
allows the common person to buy property. By definition, Capitalism is an economic systemin
which capital goods are owned by private individuals or businesses. The production of goods and
services is based on supply and demand in the general market (market economy), rather than
through central planning (planned economy or command economy), (Investopedia 1). This means
that people own everything and the profits of their property go to them. People and businesses also
control production and distribution of goods and the transfer of wealth. The positives of capitalism
are that people have opportunity to be wealthy and live life in comfort by working hard and
contributing to society. This feature attracts many immigrants

Rise of Warriors Essay
A change in governance structure can take place due to any variety of causes. While it is well
known that Japan was governed for centuries by the warrior class, it is not always known why.
The samurai rose to power over a long period of time. Following their eventual rise to the top of
the Japanese social ladder, they spent centuries consolidating their new power. There were a
number of factors that lead to the rise of the warrior class in the late Heian period, continuing
until their the Meiji Restoration. The samurai were able to rise to power for a number of reasons,
including the leadership and actions of notable warrior class families: the Taira, Minamoto and
Hojo. Another factor leading to the rise of the warriors was the... Show more content on

The Taira, however, stood out above the Minamoto by having a more favourable position with the
Emperors. The growing rivalry between the two families lead to an increasing tension between the
two. Despite both working for the Emperor, it was understood that if a war broke out: one of these
two clans were to defeat the other, there would be nothing but tradition to stop the victor from
taking over all government authority, 3. This is, of course, what occurred during the Genpei War.
The Minamoto family, too, had a significant role in the growth of the samurai. After the defeat of
the Taira clanin the Genpei war, the Minamoto family, under its leader Yoritomo, founded the first
warrior government4. Their political rivals defeated, the Minamoto were in a position from which
they could shape their country; this was further justified by Prince Mochihito who gave them legal
authority5. The government the Kamakura shogunate that was created under the early rule of the
Minamoto was based on a confederation of Eastern warriors, 6. In doing this, the Minamoto family
united the warrior class in some of the most developed parts of the country. Simultaneously, they
brought the warrior class to the forefront of authority and power in Japanese society. The
importance of the Taira family in the rise of the warrior class is somewhat limited, but absolutely
necessary nonetheless. In order for the Minamoto to take control of the government, they

Today s Exhausted Superkids Analysis
In Frank Bruni s editorial, Today s Exhausted Superkids, he talks about the lack of sleep present
in many high school and college students. He attributes this loss in sleep to a variety of factors;
although he seems to place the blame mainly on education. He blames the stress of getting good
grades on the widespread lack of sleep. Throughout his article, Bruni used many studies and other
writings to support his points. My opinion on Bruni s editorial is that it was ineffective in getting
the main point across. I agree with many of the points that Mr. Bruni brought up, but I feel that the
information he used and the way he wrote the editorial were uneffective. He did use actual facts in
some spots, though I feel they were used at the wrong parts throughout the editorial. His main
arguments were very unorganized. The evidence used by Bruni in his editorial was not very
effective at getting his point across. Most of the evidence that he used throughout his paper were
theories; theories are not always true however. In his editorial, he placed a study about the lack of
sleep present in high schools directly above a study about the small amount of sleep that the
average college student gets each night, making the two different studies seem correlated.

Sociology Prejudice
Context
Introduction
Prejudice means prejudgement. It is a psychologically and sociologically unjustifiable, usually
negative attitude towards a group and its members, and is based off of the physical characteristics
of an individual rather than what a person actually believes or does. These prejudices turn into
discrimination when the beliefs against a certain group are acted upon. Types of prejudice found in
modern society include those related to sex, gender, race, nationality, ethnicity, class, religion,
disability and language (McLeod, 2008). Racism is prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism
directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one s own race is
superior(Oxford Dictionary, 2016).

Groups (e.g. social class, family, football team etc.) which people belonged to were an important
source of pride and self esteem (Tajfel, 1979). This links to social categorisation which is when
people assign others to in groups and out groups. Social identity theory states that the in group will
hold prejudiced views, and discriminate, against the out group (McLeod, 2008). The in group does
this to enhance their own self image by denigrating the perception of the out groups (Tajfel, 1979).
In a school context social categorisation s negative effects can result in bullying and discrimination
against those who are not part of the in group, e.g. members of the LGBTIQ community, racial and
ethnic minorities, or the self segregation of students in an attempt to separate the in and out groups,
which will often result in racial self segregation as within Australian schools non white students are
the out group. Another form of social categorisation include stereotypes. A stereotypeis a fixed,
over generalized belief about a particular group or class of people (Cardwell, 1996). Stereotypes are
a way in which we simplify our social world (McLeod, 2015). By stereotyping we infer that a
person has a range of characteristics that we assume all members of a group possess. Racial
stereotypes always seem to favour the race of the holder and belittle other races (McLeod, 2015).

The Shavian Theatre of Ideas (Modern Drama)
THE SHAVIAN THEATRE OF IDEAS (MODERN DRAMA) The predominating influence in
determining Shaw to turn to the drama was the example of Ibsen and equally prominent was his
love of debating, in which he had shown how irresistible it was for him to counter his arguments
himself if no one else would. These influential strains compelled him to choose the kind of play
in which the characters undertake this dual task of proposer and opposer. In 1892, he made it into
Widower s Houses, and thereafter, for nearly sixty years with unflagging energy he made drama
peculiarly his own province. It was not till after Saint Joan that he became the revered elder
playwright, a highly respectable figure whom, however, the dramatic critics did not cease to... Show

When he had thus fulfilled his great wish to express his fundamental religious faith as a Creative
Evolutionist, Shaw returned in Saint Joan to a drama of his normal scope and manner. Its
heroine, portrayed as a sane and shrewd country girl of extraordinary strength of min and
hardihood of body...a thorough daughter of the soil in her peasantlike matter of factness and
doggedness , she was however, in her creator s mind an instrument like himself of the Life force.
In The Apple Cart, he turned again to the future and to the dismay of those who had regarded
him as an advanced advocate of democracy showed that the highest ability could be found as
well in a king as in a peasant. His brilliance was undiminished and to the end his extraordinary
vitality of mind animated all he wrote. Shaw s ideas can never cease to form an important part of
his dramatic legacy, any more than we can appreciate Shakespeare without reference to the view
of life which lies behind his work. Nevertheless, it is as dramatist upon the stage that Shaw
demands primary consideration. In his own day, Shaw s command over audiences which by no
means consisted only of those who shared his ideas was an obvious fact. His wit was always
subservient to the total working of the genius of the comic playwright. His dramatic instinct,
indeed, was altogether transcendent and so willfully fashioned its own play that the audience
almost forgot in its delight the

Essay On How To Become A World Power
There are several factors that can lead a nation into becoming a world power. Economics,
Demographics, Politics and Military. The United States can accredit much of its power today
thanks to its strong military arm. The War of 1812, Capture of Hawai i and the Spanish American
War were all turning points for the power the United Stateshas today. After President Jefferson s

US claiming Hawai i, Admiral Alfred Mahan of the US Navy had pressured the United States to

built a Naval base at Pearl Harbor. After King Kalakaua was forced to step down, his sister,
Queen Liliuokalani took over the throne and began running Hawai i on her own agenda.
Americans did not take kindly to this, and the US ambassador to Hawai i led a revolution that
dethroned the Queen, assisted by the US Marine Corps. American Sanford Dole, founder of the

The Impact Of Gaming On Today s Youth Essay

by T. Wilson (2016). This post questioned how people feel about the impacts of gaming on today
s youth. I responded with a summary of my experience with gaming and what it was to me by
writing, ... [gaming was] just another way to interact with my family. I then wrote about how I
believe parents should interact with their children through gaming. Mostly everyone agreed that it
was ... ok in moderation. (Waddell, 2016). Some, however, did write that gaming does more harm
than good, particularly in regards to social interaction. I disagreed and wrote that your neglecting
the massive benefit technology has had on communication... we can use what we learn [from
gaming] in face to face communications. During this incident I thought about the situation in a
context of my own experience growing up. I thought about how my parents raised me with
technology and what they did in regards to restrictions and interaction with me. I also thought
about all the people who say that gaming is bad for people and how I disagreed with that opinion
because of the possible cognitive, physical, psychological and, social benefits games can have. As
the discussion went on I became increasingly frustrated with what people were saying. I felt they

In her criticism of Mason and comparison of these three stylistically different writers, she is
quoted on an important aspect of the meaning of their, and especially Mason s, stories, Why do
we read novels and short stories? For pleasure; for instruction; for the solace of seeing others in
familiar dilemmas; for the opportunity to see what is unfamiliar, perhaps strange; for hope.
These writers, in different ways, satisfy these requirements. (Becker). Not only does she raise
incredible praise for these writers, she also gives us an opportunity to see how Mason s writing
fits into the other writers of her time. She shows us what the purpose of the short story is in
Mason s world, for hope (Becker). Mason in particular inspires this hope because although she is
introducing her readers to the characters of rural Kentucky, change is something that, on some
level, every reader can relate to and understand (Becker). This idea of understanding can even be
compared and seen throughout the criticisms of character presentation by Michiko Kakutani, who
has an appreciation for the way she lays out her characters to her audience, and the commentary by
Robert Newman on how she relates to her readers through her characters. The way these two

This period was a boom in the art and culture of the region, which started in the city of Florence in
the magnificent territory of Italy. Most of the knowledge gained through this very cultural
experience came through the Iliad and the Odyssey, which were both written by the well renowned
Greek blind poet Homer. This was also the time period where the Catholic Churchlost a lot of its
prominence and power. The Catholic Church which was started in 4BC by Jesus Christ was
banned from Europe until the early 4th century, because the Roman leaders disliked that it took
people away from worshipping their own gods. The ban was lifted in 377BC by the Roman
Empire, which was elevated to the status of the official religion of the empire in 394BC. When the
Roman Empire spilt predominantly into east and west, the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Ignatius along with his six students whose plan was approved by the Pope took an oath to covert

In September of 1540, Pope Paul III approved the blueprint for the society of Jesuit. While we are
on the topic of reformation, it s time to bring in the Humanists. The Humanists was a group of

Impact of External and Internal Factors on the Four Functions of Management External and internal
factors such as globalization, technology, innovation, diversity and ethics can greatly impact the
four functions of management. Functions such as planning, organizing, leading, and controlling
can be influenced by these different internal and external factors since organizations need to ensure
that they are addressed properly for business success. In addition, knowing the external and internal

Diversity Diversity is variety of something, such as opinion, race, color, style and or gender (
Diversity, 2008, n.p.) In order for a company or organization to be diverse it needs to value
diversity by respecting and appreciating all aspects of an individual, including race, gender,
religion, skin color, nationality, sexual orientation, gender identity, physical abilities, age,
parental status to name a few. That is what The United Way of America stands on and strives for.
United Way is built up of all different walks of life and in order for the non profit organization to
be able to strive everyone must be able to get along and work well with each other. To make sure
the organization stays diverse, United Way of America has formed a Diversity Cabinet to
eliminate discrimination. United Way is made up of all types of individuals from every walk of
life to form their cabinets, their volunteers and their customers. United Way s Core Value statement
is Diversity and Inclusion are core values for United Way. We aspire every segment of the

Nicaragu The Spanish Speaking Nation Of Nicaragua
In the heart of Central America lies the Spanish speaking nation of Nicaragua. Officially titled the
Republic of Nicaragua , there have been multiple stories of how the country got its name, the most
prominent story says that during the time the Spanish invaded, Nicaragua took its name from an
indigenous chief named Nicarao who was ruler of the region. Fast forwarding the history: Three
hundred years of Spanish colonialism, a hundred years of totalitarian ruling by multiple presidents ,
and thirty years of Somoza family dictatorship, Nicaraguaunderwent the Sandinista revolution in
1979 to create a socialist society. Despite socialism having a track record of failure, there was
great advancements in literacy and overall education, as well as improvement the nations GDP.
However, the 1980 s were engrossed in destructive guerilla wars and political blunder sending the
nation into a downward spiral.
Political History
Though titled as a democratic nation, the early years of Nicaragua s political ruling was taken by
tyrannical rule, namely the Somoza family who publicly used violence to silence opposition or
potential opponents. The end of their rule resulted in the creation of a constitution that ensured
political rights to the people while suppressing the power of those in power as well as setting a
limit on how long one could stay in office. Since 1987, the supreme law of the country is the The

Support Center For Student Veterans
Transfer of Learning
The goal of this program will be to develop a support center for student veterans that will enhance
the veteran s cognitive development for achieving success in postsecondary education by
coordinating services to address their academic, financial, physical, and social needs. Caffarella
and Daffron (2013) stress the importance of reasons for the planning of transfer of learning, the
following will show how the veteran s center developed the program to fulfill the reasons/needs for
the center and program (p.215). The first reason being the ad hoc organization and the veteran
students will ask for learning outcomes that apply practical knowledge to make a difference in the
veteran s efforts to balance the many personal, professional, and academic responsibilities in their
lives. The veteran s center and program provide this practical knowledge as shown in Table 1. The
second reason the center and program will be developed is to help the veterans develop solutions
that will create a balanced approach to the responsibilities in their lives. The transfer of learning
plan will be constructed to allow the veteran students to apply their learning to balance the difficult
demands of their lives as previously stated (Caffarella Daffron, 2013, p. 215). Finally, the transfer
of learning plan will assist the veterans to transfer their learning to reflect the changes they
themselves need to make to translate the knowledge, skills, and attitudes (KSAs) (See Appendix

The Trope Of The Sphere
Interestingly, it is via Borges, a well known master in the creation of literary labyrinths, that we
are able to find several possible explanations for these inner circularities, for instance, through his
recurrent references to the trope of the sphere. Take some of the short fictions that constitute his
1941 volume The Garden of Forking Paths, namely Lottery in Babylon and The Library of
Babel . Not only does Borges tell us that the Babylonians obey the dictates of chance, surrender
their lives, their hopes, their nameless terror to it, but it never occurs to them to delve into its
labyrinthine laws or the revolving spheres that manifest its workings (Borges 1998: 104;
emphasis added), but also his Library of Babel is a sphere whose exact center is any hexagon
and whose circumference is unattainable (113). Moreover, the trope of the sphere whose center
is everywhere and its circumference nowhere would be later analysed by Borges in an essay
titled Pascal s Sphere [1951]. In it, the significance of the sphere as a double paradox of time
/infinity and of unity/multiplicity becomes clearer, by means of a line that he draws from
Xenophanes of Colophon to Pascal in order to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Not only the tetrahedron proves to be circular due to the geographical positions of the murders, but
also the implied notion of rebirth that is given in the imminence of the main character s death
already denotes the idea of circularity (Borges 1998: 156). Notwithstanding, in the same text there
is also evidence of an acquaintance with the pre Socratic coincidentia oppositorum, by means of
which a straight line is potentially no different from a circular line (plus, a formulation that is also

Similarities Between Baroque And Baroque Eras
Introduction
European design has evolved over the centuries from the Renaissance era of the 15th century to
Baroque era of the 16th century right through to the Rococo era of the late 1700 s. Even though the
style might have changed, some elements can be traced across all three periods.
This essay will explore the similarities and differences in the aforementioned eras by singling out 4
different examples from these eras and how these influenced or affected the society and patrons
who commissioned these artworks at that time.
Emphasis will be placed on specific examples that best demonstrate the style of each era. The
image examples used in this essay are firstly the ceiling of the Sistine chapel and the bronze David
by Donatello. Both ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After the peak of the Renaissance era of 1600 Rome, there was a move towards a style that was
more dramatic and celebrated the church and the elite. This style melodramatically reaffirmed the
emotional depths of the catholic faith and glorified both the church and monarch (History of Art,
1933:284). Baroque is distinguished by the grander sense of space in architecture, intense emotion
and movement in painting and sculpture. Opulence and grandeur is often displayed in the
ostentatious interiors homes of the elite and the church was highly decorated.
Some similarities between Baroque and Renaissance eras, is the strong use of light and shade to
create depth and realism.
The word Baroque derives from the Portuguese word barocco which seems to imply an irregularly
shaped or imperfect pearl. Which is quite ironic since Baroque design was anything but imperfect.
Rococo
The style of the Rococo period can be characterised as being playful and asymmetrical as opposed
to that of Baroque. Though there are similarities between the two stylistic periods, Rococo design
is more ornate and motifs usually resemble shells and stones and the intricate designs are often
gilded with gold and other precious metals. The colour palette is muted and emphasis is placed on
the design rather than the

A Character Analysis Of Randle Patrick Mcmurphy
Randle Patrick McMurphy is shown to be a flawed character because of his huge ego, making
him a lecherous gambler high on his own arrogance, and his desire and hunger for power and
control. He thinks he can win any gamble, including a gamble on his life. The stakes are that he
bets the men that he can break Nurse Ratched without letting her get the best of him. Even when
he enters the ward, McMurphy has that kind of swagger kind of walk and he laughs, something
that has not been done by any of the patients on the ward. He is full of brass and swagger and full
of assurance and arrogance with his hanging thumbs in the belt loop of his pants, his heavily
scarred skin, his many tattoos, and his fresh scar on the bridge of his nose (95). After being sent to
Disturbed, McMurphy was confronted with the decision to admit he was wrong and avoid
electroshock therapy, to which he responded to the nurse saying, Those Chinese Commies could
have learned a few things from you, lady. Due to this high arrogance in his confidence, McMurphy
received electroshock therapy along with three other treatments that same very week. This all led
up to the major consequence of lobotomy, in which McMurphy was essentially made a vegetable,
to be nothing more than a cautionary tale on Nurse Ratched s ward.
This powerful and confident character challenges the power of Ratched over the patients in the
ward only to defy her law on the ward. The idea that nothing is gained by McMurphy s rebellion is

Plagiarism Is More Effective Than Just Punishing Students
Later Draft
Scott Jaschik discusses various situations of plagiarism in college in his article, Winning Hearts
and Minds in War on Plagiarism, in order to argue that there are more efficient solutions to prevent
plagiarism. Jaschik published this article in Inside Higher Ed, which is an online news source, that
he cofounded, targeting first year English and college writing instructors. In the article, he explores
different ways of preventing plagiarism and emphasizes the importance of academic integrity. By
drawing on different instructor perspectives, he employs various situations such as an online
student discussion board and an assignment to purposely plagiarize in order to highlight common
issues with why students plagiarize. Jaschik ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although there still was some unintentional plagiarizing, the open minded conversation between
Hagopian and her students was more beneficial and effective for the students because it taught them
the, difference between deliberate fraud and failed apprenticeship (Jaschik 262). This example
strengthens
Jaschik s idea by specifically illustrating how first year writing instructors being more open minded
towards plagiarism can be more beneficial for the students. Jaschik also describes another example
with Roy Stamper, an associate writing director, who followed an online student discussion board
where students discussed how they felt about plagiarizing which led
Stamper to discover that there was also a strong, intense reaction from other students much of it
critical (263). Jaschik uses this to illustrate how his lurking online raised many questions and
whether, an intense workload puts an emphasis for students on efficiency as opposed to quality
(263 4). This example also strengthens Jaschik s argument in that it appeals to the first year writing
instructors by giving insight on various students opinions on plagiarizing. This is effective to the
instructors because it allows them to learn some reasons why students plagiarize, such as being
overloaded and not having enough time. Even Stamper himself asks, Should writing instructors be

Research Paper of Animal Communication If you have a pet like dog, you will think it knows us.
They know our expressions and they always can give us a comfort when we are in terrible

language and animal language. Animal might not be able to speak a real language, but they can use
certain way to communicate with each other. Language communication can be divided into two
forms, which is verbal and nonverbal. Most of animals use body languages to communicate. There
are many ways to communicate in nonverbal communications, some animals use signs, signals, or
sounds to communicate. For example, Bees dance when they find the nectar, horses rub noses as a
sign of affection, and chimpanzees greet each other by touching hands. Humans and animals use
three basic forms of signs in communication: sound, odor and body movement. All systems of
communication contain units of form that have specifics meaning as signs. Depending on different
species animals have distinct forms nonverbal language, such as foxes have twenty forms of
vocalization. The greatest similarity between human and animal communication is the use of
sound. Humans express emotion through the use of words and tone in the same way as animals

Persuasive Essay About Community Service
As an 18 year old tennager, I was forced by my parents to participate a summer volunteer
program in my freshman year. Even though I felt that I was a victim of tyranny in the beginning,
I realized that I actually enjoyed the process of helping people in the middle of the program. Now,
I participate that program every year as an active member, and I have gained the personal
enrichment that I am unable to learn from other sources such as math club or SAT preparatory
class. There is no doubt that community service can bring essential benefits in helping students
develop their moralvalue and future interest, and it should be mandatory because some students
attempt to utilize community service as a tool for their own profit without the school supervision.
Volunteerismenables students to gain the moral lesson that is vital to their life and develop their
future interest. According to source 2, community service teaches us through experience about the
relationship between empathy and responsibility, about what it takes to be part of a community, in
essence, about human being . While students are helping their community, they learn the crucial
moral lessons in the most direct and impressive way. Through an actual experience of volunteering,
students are reminded that it is their responsibility to serve for their community because they are a
part of it. Helping without any feedback allows them to realize the power of empathy, the essential
value that makes the society a

Proposal Essay Depression
Depression can move in on a person quickly or creep in like a fog. It can be a visceral experience,
like a blow to the gut or a heavy burden suddenly pressing down on one s shoulders.
It can affect one s experience of the world: if it s sunny outside, somehow it seems dull and cold; if
it s gray, the gray gets heavier.
Have you ever been depressed? How do you stand against it; how do you push back the gray veil?
How do you cope with depression and even work to break out of it?
First, it s important to know the difference between the winter blues, an occasional down day, a
week when you re just feeling off, and longer lasting, biologically based depression.

I do recommend anything by Bill Withers, especially the soulful Lean on Me ( Sometimes in our
lives, we all have pain, we all have sorrow, but if we are wise, we know that there s always
tomorrow... ).
One song that always cheers me is Dobie Gray s Drift Away ( And when I m feeling blue, a guitar
s comin through to sooth me. Thanks for the joy that you ve given me... ). Sometimes music can be
used as a catalyst, something through which to channel your anger (depression can stem from deep
anger [McCrary 1998]) and pain. For that, I recommend Mary J. Blige s No
More Cryin from her The Breakthrough album (2005). Other songs I recommend from that album
are Take Me As I Am and Good Woman Down. Finally, because depression can also stem from
fear, I recommend listening to Mindkiller, by Adam Freeland off of his Now and
Them album (2004). Blast this song and remind yourself that, as the lyrics say, Fear is the mind
killer. Going for a drive in your car can also be a distraction from the depression, as long as you feel
safe in handling the vehicle. You can take your music with you, head east, then turn back toward
the Front Range to give yourself full view of the area s jagged, snow covered peaks. Or
Asmus, page 3 drive right up into the mountains, allowing the music to serve as a soundtrack for

  • 2. The Pros And Cons Of Standardized Testing There is a major controversy over standardized achievement testing that has now called for students, parents, educators, and communities to become involved. The United States is lacking in education from a worldwide viewpoint. The United States currently ranks 17th among 50 other global education systems (Gayathri). If America continues to fall behind, then the educational gap between races will continue to expand. Is the solution to the United States falling behind globally? It s to increase standardized tests. Standardized tests play a major role in education today, whether they are achievement tests measuring subject specific knowledge or aptitude tests measuring scholastic readiness. The goal of the assessments is to provide a yardstick to evaluate student performance across state standards. (Concordia University Portland 2017) The No Child Left Behind Act and the Common Core State Standards Initiative are prominent examples of test based accountability policies. The practice has ignited a debate about their effectiveness and how well this kind of test measures student achievement. (Concordia University Portland 2017) A standardized test is an examination that s scored and administered in a predetermined manner. (Popham 1999) Present day, standardized test is ...any objective test, or combination of objective and performance tests, that yields the same score for the same performance, no matter who is doing the scoring (Hirsch) Standardized testing consist of ... Sixteen year old Beatrice Prior is warned not to inform anyone about her testresult not even her family, because she is divergent. On the day of the choosing ceremony, the day all sixteen year olds decide their future, Beatrice s thought are drowned in confusion. She can t decide which faction to choose, since the Aptitudetest didn t help her, but she finally chooses the Dauntless. To get to the Dauntless compound the initiates have to have to jump off a roof and into an underground tunnel. Beatrice decides to change her name to Tris after she jumps off the roof as the first initiate to jump. The transfer initiates are given a tour of the compound, once they reach the dormitories, one of the Dauntless leaders, Eric, tells them only ten of the initiates will become members at the end of initiation, the rest will become factionless. • 4. Emancipationawassone Of The American Civil War Emancipationawassone of the most profound consequences of the American Civil War. During and after the war, about four million enslaved African Americans in the United States became free persons. This generation had a significant influence on American history, an influence that has yet to be fully recognized. During this remarkable period of transition, former slaves stabilized their family lives, sought to control their work environments, established their own schools and churches, and participated in public life as citizens. While these goals may appear straightforward to us today, they were anything but simple to achieve at the time. The transition from slavery to freedom was as extraordinary as it was complex. Newly freed African Americans experienced both boundless joy and excruciating disappointment as they established themselves as free persons. Freed people frequently encountered violent resistance to their efforts to become paid workers and active citizens. Many white southerners refused to accept former slaves as free persons. The state of Tennessee provides a particularly rich case study of the transition from slavery to freedom during the Civil War and Reconstruction. Second only to Virginia in the number of skirmishes and battles on its soil, Tennessee was at the heart of the conflict between North and South. The chaos of war visited many Tennessee communities and served to break down the bonds that kept 275,000 individuals enslaved. Most Tennessee ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Pros And Cons Of The Western Union Why has Western Union been able to adapt to severe disruptions and survive over so many years? It never confused the business it was in with the way it conducted its business. At its core, Western Union was about facilitating person to person communications and money transfers whether via telegraph, wireless networks, phone, or the Internet. We always saw ourselves as a communications company, says President Christina Gold. Contrast that with Kodak. By defining itself too narrowly as a product company all those years, it was headed for a fall. Kodak teetered on the precipice and with it stands some of the other once great businesses of the 20th century, from autos to newspapers. They were immensely successful and proud, but their very success made it difficult to adjust. The more successfully you use a way of working, the stronger your culture is, which is a great strength right up to the time when you need to change, says Clayton Christensen, a professor at Harvard Business School. Then came the iPod, a must have device for music fans, and iTunes, an online music shop that turned music downloading into a profit making business. By making iPod and iTunes work with Windows PCs, Apple broke out of selling only to its niche of loyal fans. But its transformation is even more profound than that: In essence, it switched from being a great designer of computer products into a great designer of consumer experiences delivered via devices and services. Now music represents 44% of Apple s revenues, and an even larger share of profits. If Kodak focused on the consumer experience they provided rather than the actual product the story might have been so ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

We selected these particular funds due to historical performance and future growth potential. Part 1: Descriptive Data and Summary Statistics of the Five Mutual Fund Table 1: We selected 5 mutual funds that have 80% of more invested in stock equity securities in the mutual fund. The 5 mutual funds all have different investment styles according to Morningstar. The investment objective defines what each mutual fund s long term goals are. It includes things such as required return, the risk tolerance, and investment time horizon. The investment style is the different strategy used to set asset allocation of the mutual fund. It sets expectations for long term portfolio performance. For example, VTICX focuses on large blend, where HASCX focuses on small blend; meaning that they will target different portfolio asset allocations. Each fund will allocate its funds differently and in different proportions. The investment strategy is a set of rules, behaviors or procedures designed to guide an investor s selection of an investment portfolio. For example, VTICX looks into stocks that pay lower dividends and are included in the Russell 1000 Index so they can provide a tax efficient investment return consisting of long term capital appreciation. • 7. Deborah Tannen s I Only Say This Because I Love You, And... Introduction Interpersonal conflicts are inevitable. Different texts suggest not how to avoid conflict, but rather how to effectively communicate when involved in one. However, the rules of constructive communication can completely change in conflicts between people in long term, interdependent relationships. This paper will focus on analyzing a conversation between a mother and her adult son, while applying ideas from William Wilmot and Joyce Hocker s Interpersonal Conflict, Deborah Tannen s I Only Say This Because I Love You, and the Conflict Styles lecture. He does so in a way that is assertive rather than aggressive. Instead of aggressively pushing his thoughts onto Dianne without explanation, Earl works towards achieving his desired goals by openly expressing his frustration as a response to his mother s commands. In conjunction with his dominant conflict style, he threatens, the more you tell me to, the more I won t, which qualifies as a threat, because it meets the two required criteria. First, the source of the threat must control the outcome. Earl controls the outcome of the situation since he has the ability to either obey or disobey Dianne. Secondly, the threat must be seen as negative by the recipient. In this case, the recipient Dianne sees the condition of Earl s comment as negative since she will not get her way (Wilmot and Hocker, 159). Earl uses the threat in an attempt to put an end to his mother s current and future demands. However, the use of a threat begs the question, what is gained? Although Earl solves his immediate issue of changing the sheets at his own convenience, he risks leaving the bigger problem unresolved and damaging the relationship with his mother (Wilmot and Hocker, 160). A man whose name has become synonymous with the word Masterpiece. The second of five brothers, Michelangelo was born on March 6, 1475 at Caprese in Tuscany. His mother died young and when he was six he was placed with a wet nurse, in a family of stone cutters. His father realized how smart the boy was, he quickly put him in school, and there he learned and studied Latin. In order to show the tragedy of the great moment, Michelangelo imprints almost fatal movement on the humanity which gathers around Jesus. The battle of the Centaurs was a reflection of the scheme of the battles of Alexander from Greek sculptures. There is an monumental female figure, strongly modeled in the clouds in the left of the painting. She turns toward Christ, the judge and seizes a young girl who clasped her around the waste as an act of protection .( Abrams pg.107 Michelangelo the painter) The two figures are on the edge of a cloud strip which serves as a sculptured base. • 9. The Electoral College System Is Outdated And Unfair Every year on the fourth of November an election is taken place to select the next president of the United States. Just recently, in the 2016 election, Hilary Clinton won the popular vote and Donald Trump won the electoral vote, in which he was elected president. This made many Americans question if the electoral collegesystem is outdated and unfair and if the direct popular vote is a more effective way of electing the president. This has happened twice where the candidate who has the popular vote did not win the presidency. The problem that has arisen is that the rules of the presidential election need to be replaced so that it will reflect the true opinion of the U.S. citizens. Congress decides who they want to dictate how many electors each state has based it off of the state s population (Edwards 14). The Constitution requires that winning candidate must have 270 of the Electoral College votes. For instance, during the 2004 election, Bush had collected 271 electoral votes if he had two fewer votes and Gore two more than both of the candidates would have had fifty percent of the Electoral College votes (Schumaker 12). What is a popular vote? A popular vote is a way for a candidate to get a majority of votes for an election. The citizens of the U.S. vote on a presidential candidate. How was the Electoral College Founded? The Electoral College was constructed to be a compromise between the different ways of selecting the president. Originally the delegates of the Constitutional Convention wanted Congress to select eh president, while others preferred the direct popular election (Schumaker 13). While the Constitutional Convention proceeded, one of the founders established a Committee of the Eleven to create a compromise for selecting the president (Schumaker 13). The reason for the idea of the Electoral College many opposed to the direct popular vote because people feared that the less popular vote would feel inferior to other states (Schumaker 13). In developed countries such as North America boys and girls are fortunate enough to have access to an unbiased education system. Therefore, allowing children to have countless opportunities. However, in countries like Afghanistan girls are marginalized and neglected the right to learn. Afghanistan is a country of war, where women and girls are often the worst victims. In 2011, Afghanistan was known as the most dangerous place in the world for a girl to be born (Kissane). Malala Yousufzai, a female education activist was also a victim of war. Yousufazi was shot in the head and neck for advocating for girls and their rights to have access to education. Similarly, to Yousufzai many women in Afghanistan stand up for their entitlement to having equality. Those courageous women often become victims of abuse and are often killed. Investing in girls education is critical, not only is it life altering for a girl s future, but it s also poses benefits to society. By allowing Afghan girls access to educating we are also promoting better socioeconomic s, a reduction in child marriages, and an improvement in mortality rates. • 13. Setting Clear Boundaries in the Social Work Field Setting Clear Boundaries In Social Work Many individuals opt for the field of social work so that others may grow and improve their way of life and have a stable living style. However, while providing this sort of help to the clients, it is important that social workers are aware of their ethical boundaries and have communicated this to their clients as well. Setting and maintain clear boundaries is a very important part of every profession. As far as social work is concerned where the worker directly influences the lives of his clients, this practice becomes more important as it has a direct impact on ones professional integrity. Where we see number of complaints filed against the social workers for breach of ethical boundaries, it is important to understand what these limitations are and how to adhere to them. In order to understand the concept of setting clear boundaries, let s have a look at what Dietz and Thompson said about it. As per them, The concern about appropriate boundaries is, at least in part, a concern about the effects of the power differential between client and professional. It is primarily a concern about boundary violations (Dietz and Thompson, 2004, p. 2). In addition to it, it is important to realize that boundaries provide us safer connections based on the needs of clients we are dealing with (Peterson, 1992, p. 74). Now that we are aware of what boundaries really are, it is also vitally significant about what constitutes a breach and how ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

As I walked, I realize that there was only one whole food market. Meanwhile, a McDonald s and Kentucky Fried Chicken were seen on multiple corners. These same communities have now become so westernized that they neglect the traditional side of diet. Instead, everyone now focus on the new fast food market. Essay about Socrates’ Trial Defense in Terms of His Values Socrates Trial Defense in Terms of His Values In his Apology, Plato recounted the trial that led to the execution of his friend and mentor, Socrates. The account revealed that values of Socrates accusers and his own fundamentally differed, and that they had been angered because he tried to prove that they had misplaced theirs. Those differences created conflict between the two parties that culminated in his trial. With the understanding that a jury condemned Socrates to death and his defense nevertheless pleased him because he gave it truthfully, it is most sensible to call it a good defense because he felt it was the best that he could do. Had people believed that Socrates in fact had no wisdom, his reputation would not have become so bad and his defense would have been more likely to succeed. He explained, however that individuals whom he criticized took offense at him and grew angry because they felt that he had more wisdom than they did. ...I am called wise, for my hearers always imagine that I myself possess the wisdom which I find wanting in others: but the truth is, O men of Athens, that God only is wise; and in this oracle he means to say that the wisdom of men is little or nothing... (Plato, 5) While that statement would not have convinced many people that Socrates lacked wisdom, it succeeded at presenting the idea that the oracle meant the wisdom of people is little or nothing. That likely benefited him among his supporters and some neutral jurors because they could have believed that Socrates mission had been to show that people lacked wisdom compared to gods rather than that he had more wisdom than others did. Among people who disliked him or who took pride in their wisdom, the argument would not have helped him; they wouldn t have believed in the piety of his mission and they would have thought that it proved the superiority of his wisdom to theirs. • 35. Today s Exhausted Superkids Analysis In Frank Bruni s editorial, Today s Exhausted Superkids, he talks about the lack of sleep present in many high school and college students. He attributes this loss in sleep to a variety of factors; although he seems to place the blame mainly on education. He blames the stress of getting good grades on the widespread lack of sleep. Throughout his article, Bruni used many studies and other writings to support his points. My opinion on Bruni s editorial is that it was ineffective in getting the main point across. I agree with many of the points that Mr. Bruni brought up, but I feel that the information he used and the way he wrote the editorial were uneffective. He did use actual facts in some spots, though I feel they were used at the wrong parts throughout the editorial. His main arguments were very unorganized. The evidence used by Bruni in his editorial was not very effective at getting his point across. Most of the evidence that he used throughout his paper were theories; theories are not always true however. In his editorial, he placed a study about the lack of sleep present in high schools directly above a study about the small amount of sleep that the average college student gets each night, making the two different studies seem correlated. • 36. Sociology Prejudice Context Introduction Prejudice means prejudgement. It is a psychologically and sociologically unjustifiable, usually negative attitude towards a group and its members, and is based off of the physical characteristics of an individual rather than what a person actually believes or does. These prejudices turn into discrimination when the beliefs against a certain group are acted upon. Types of prejudice found in modern society include those related to sex, gender, race, nationality, ethnicity, class, religion, disability and language (McLeod, 2008). Racism is prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one s own race is superior(Oxford Dictionary, 2016). Contributing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Groups (e.g. social class, family, football team etc.) which people belonged to were an important source of pride and self esteem (Tajfel, 1979). This links to social categorisation which is when people assign others to in groups and out groups. Social identity theory states that the in group will hold prejudiced views, and discriminate, against the out group (McLeod, 2008). The in group does this to enhance their own self image by denigrating the perception of the out groups (Tajfel, 1979). In a school context social categorisation s negative effects can result in bullying and discrimination against those who are not part of the in group, e.g. members of the LGBTIQ community, racial and ethnic minorities, or the self segregation of students in an attempt to separate the in and out groups, which will often result in racial self segregation as within Australian schools non white students are the out group. Another form of social categorisation include stereotypes. A stereotypeis a fixed, over generalized belief about a particular group or class of people (Cardwell, 1996). Stereotypes are a way in which we simplify our social world (McLeod, 2015). By stereotyping we infer that a person has a range of characteristics that we assume all members of a group possess. Racial stereotypes always seem to favour the race of the holder and belittle other races (McLeod, 2015). ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. The Shavian Theatre of Ideas (Modern Drama) THE SHAVIAN THEATRE OF IDEAS (MODERN DRAMA) The predominating influence in determining Shaw to turn to the drama was the example of Ibsen and equally prominent was his love of debating, in which he had shown how irresistible it was for him to counter his arguments himself if no one else would. These influential strains compelled him to choose the kind of play in which the characters undertake this dual task of proposer and opposer. In 1892, he made it into Widower s Houses, and thereafter, for nearly sixty years with unflagging energy he made drama peculiarly his own province. Shaw s ideas can never cease to form an important part of his dramatic legacy, any more than we can appreciate Shakespeare without reference to the view of life which lies behind his work. Nevertheless, it is as dramatist upon the stage that Shaw demands primary consideration. In his own day, Shaw s command over audiences which by no means consisted only of those who shared his ideas was an obvious fact. In her criticism of Mason and comparison of these three stylistically different writers, she is quoted on an important aspect of the meaning of their, and especially Mason s, stories, Why do we read novels and short stories? For pleasure; for instruction; for the solace of seeing others in familiar dilemmas; for the opportunity to see what is unfamiliar, perhaps strange; for hope. These writers, in different ways, satisfy these requirements. (Becker). Not only does she raise incredible praise for these writers, she also gives us an opportunity to see how Mason s writing fits into the other writers of her time. She shows us what the purpose of the short story is in Mason s world, for hope (Becker). Mason in particular inspires this hope because although she is introducing her readers to the characters of rural Kentucky, change is something that, on some level, every reader can relate to and understand (Becker). This idea of understanding can even be compared and seen throughout the criticisms of character presentation by Michiko Kakutani, who has an appreciation for the way she lays out her characters to her audience, and the commentary by Robert Newman on how she relates to her readers through her characters. The Trope Of The Sphere Interestingly, it is via Borges, a well known master in the creation of literary labyrinths, that we are able to find several possible explanations for these inner circularities, for instance, through his recurrent references to the trope of the sphere. Take some of the short fictions that constitute his 1941 volume The Garden of Forking Paths, namely Lottery in Babylon and The Library of Babel . Not only does Borges tell us that the Babylonians obey the dictates of chance, surrender their lives, their hopes, their nameless terror to it, but it never occurs to them to delve into its labyrinthine laws or the revolving spheres that manifest its workings (Borges 1998: 104; emphasis added), but also his Library of Babel is a sphere whose exact center is any hexagon and whose circumference is unattainable (113). Moreover, the trope of the sphere whose center is everywhere and its circumference nowhere would be later analysed by Borges in an essay titled Pascal s Sphere [1951]. Baroque is distinguished by the grander sense of space in architecture, intense emotion and movement in painting and sculpture. Opulence and grandeur is often displayed in the ostentatious interiors homes of the elite and the church was highly decorated. Some similarities between Baroque and Renaissance eras, is the strong use of light and shade to create depth and realism. Due to this high arrogance in his confidence, McMurphy received electroshock therapy along with three other treatments that same very week. • 56. Persuasive Essay About Community Service As an 18 year old tennager, I was forced by my parents to participate a summer volunteer program in my freshman year. Even though I felt that I was a victim of tyranny in the beginning, I realized that I actually enjoyed the process of helping people in the middle of the program. Now, I participate that program every year as an active member, and I have gained the personal enrichment that I am unable to learn from other sources such as math club or SAT preparatory class. There is no doubt that community service can bring essential benefits in helping students develop their moralvalue and future interest, and it should be mandatory because some students attempt to utilize community service as a tool for their own profit without the school supervision. Volunteerismenables students to gain the moral lesson that is vital to their life and develop their future interest. According to source 2, community service teaches us through experience about the relationship between empathy and responsibility, about what it takes to be part of a community, in essence, about human being . While students are helping their community, they learn the crucial moral lessons in the most direct and impressive way. Through an actual experience of volunteering, students are reminded that it is their responsibility to serve for their community because they are a part of it. Helping without any feedback allows them to realize the power of empathy, the essential value that makes the society a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 57. My Favorite Room Essay If I had to choose what my favorite room in my house was, I would say my bedroom. You will be placed on the south east corner of the room in front of the door. You are in a twenty foot in width by fifteen foot in length by eight foot in height room. In this essay i will describe the area of my room without using the actual names of each item. There is one door and one window within the room. In the middle of the ceiling is a white mechanism with rotating blades that helps cool the air. Each blade is made of a fibrous material. In the middle of the mechanism is four fixtures that spread out about four inches away from each other and illuminate the entire room. Small metallic cords hang from the mechanism that are used to change the speed of the rotating blades and the brightness of the illuminating fixtures. As you look down at the ground, you can see a mostly grey fabric... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Underneath the soft circle is 6 legs protruding down to the ground from the center of the circle about 2 feet. At the end of these legs are cylinders used to provide movement to the doodad. While looking closer at the doodad you can see wear from nearly constant use. The doodad is used as a place to sit and relax, or to sit and to do stressful assignments. As you take a look in the middle of the west wall you can see an apparatus that is five feet wide one foot long and four feet tall. The apparatus is black with a golden accent, and is made of a fibrous material cut and processed from a large plant that provides oxygen. The apparatus has six containers that are evenly spaced within the apparatus. On the left side of the apparatus is a metal wind instrument with a single reed mouthpiece. This instrument is primarily used in jazz music. The instrument is silver and has a flower like decal on the side. The mouthpiece of the instrument looks rarely used. Underneath the instrument are the supplies used to clean the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 58. Proposal Essay Depression Depression can move in on a person quickly or creep in like a fog. It can be a visceral experience, like a blow to the gut or a heavy burden suddenly pressing down on one s shoulders. It can affect one s experience of the world: if it s sunny outside, somehow it seems dull and cold; if it s gray, the gray gets heavier. Have you ever been depressed? How do you stand against it; how do you push back the gray veil? How do you cope with depression and even work to break out of it? First, it s important to know the difference between the winter blues, an occasional down day, a week when you re just feeling off, and longer lasting, biologically based depression. Depression is a whole body illness, involving your thoughts, mood and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I do recommend anything by Bill Withers, especially the soulful Lean on Me ( Sometimes in our lives, we all have pain, we all have sorrow, but if we are wise, we know that there s always tomorrow... ). One song that always cheers me is Dobie Gray s Drift Away ( And when I m feeling blue, a guitar s comin through to sooth me. Thanks for the joy that you ve given me... ). Sometimes music can be used as a catalyst, something through which to channel your anger (depression can stem from deep anger [McCrary 1998]) and pain. For that, I recommend Mary J. Blige s No More Cryin from her The Breakthrough album (2005). Other songs I recommend from that album are Take Me As I Am and Good Woman Down. Finally, because depression can also stem from fear, I recommend listening to Mindkiller, by Adam Freeland off of his Now and Them album (2004). Blast this song and remind yourself that, as the lyrics say, Fear is the mind killer. Going for a drive in your car can also be a distraction from the depression, as long as you feel safe in handling the vehicle. You can take your music with you, head east, then turn back toward the Front Range to give yourself full view of the area s jagged, snow covered peaks. Or Asmus, page 3 drive right up into the mountains, allowing the music to serve as a soundtrack for each turn in the road. When you break over the top of a hill and have a view of the valley below, use this as a metaphor for your depression that you ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
