1. The Kings Command
Text: 1Sam 13:14
1Sam 13:14
14 But now thy kingdom shall not continue: the LORD
hath sought him a man after his own heart, and the LORD
hath commanded him to be captain over his people,
because thou hast not kept that which the LORD
commanded thee.
Rev 5:10
10 And hast made us unto our God kings and priests:
and we shall reign on the earth.
I. Fight the Philistines- 1Sam 9:16
1Sam 9:16
16 To morrow about this time I will send thee a man out
of the land of Benjamin, and thou shalt anoint him to be
captain over my people Israel, that he may save my
people out of the hand of the Philistines: for I have
looked upon my people, because their cry is come unto
me.

2. He was to defeat the Philistines as Captain NOT
king. Israel was not Saul’s people, but Gods’.
For a Christian our arch enemy is SIN, and like saul
we can’t defeat it on our own, but neither should
you ignore it and live peaceably with it.
You can’t fight sin without a sword.
1Sam 13:19-22 19 Now there was no smith found
throughout all the land of Israel: for the Philistines
said, Lest the Hebrews make them swords or spears:
20 But all the Israelites went down to the Philistines,
to sharpen every man his share, and his coulter, and
his axe, and his mattock.
21 Yet they had a file for the mattocks, and for the
coulters, and for the forks, and for the axes, and to
sharpen the goads.
22 So it came to pass in the day of battle, that there
was neither sword nor spear found in the hand of any
of the people that were with Saul and Jonathan: but
with Saul and with Jonathan his son was there found.
II. Feed Israel- 2Sam 5:2

2 Also in time past, when Saul was king over us, thou wast
he that leddest out and broughtest in Israel: and the LORD
said to thee, Thou shalt feed my people Israel, and thou
shalt be a captain over Israel.
1Sam 14:24 And the men of Israel were distressed
that day: for Saul had adjured the people, saying,
Cursed be the man that eateth any food until evening,
that I may be avenged on mine enemies. So none of
the people tasted any food.
1Sam 14:29-30 29 Then said Jonathan, My father
hath troubled the land: see, I pray you, how mine eyes
have been enlightened, because I tasted a little of this
honey.
30 How much more, if haply the people had eaten
freely to day of the spoil of their enemies which they
found? for had there not been now a much greater
slaughter among the Philistines?
2Sam 7:7 In all the places wherein I have walked with
all the children of Israel spake I a word with any of the
tribes of Israel, whom I commanded to feed my
people Israel, saying, Why build ye not me an house
of cedar?

4. Ps 78:70-72 70 He chose David also his servant, and
took him from the sheepfolds:
71 From following the ewes great with young he
brought him to feed Jacob his people, and Israel his
inheritance.
72 So he fed them according to the integrity of his
heart; and guided them by the skilfulness of his
hands.
Ezek 34:22-23 22 Therefore will I save my flock, and
they shall no more be a prey; and I will judge between
cattle and cattle.
23 And I will set up one shepherd over them, and he
shall feed them, even my servant David; he shall feed
them, and he shall be their shepherd.
Mic 5:3-4 3 Therefore will he give them up, until the
time that she which travaileth hath brought forth:
then the remnant of his brethren shall return unto the
children of Israel.
4 And he shall stand and feed in the strength of the
LORD, in the majesty of the name of the LORD his
God; and they shall abide: for now shall he be great
unto the ends of the earth.

5. John 21:15 So when they had dined, Jesus saith to
Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me
more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou
knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my
lambs.
John 21:16 He saith to him again the second time,
Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto
him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith
unto him, Feed my sheep.
John 21:17 He saith unto him the third time, Simon,
son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved
because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou
me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all

Acts 20:28 Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and
to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath
made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which
he hath purchased with his own blood.
Rev 7:17 For the Lamb which is in the midst of the
throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto

III. Lead Israel- 2Sam 5:2
2 Also in time past, when Saul was king over us, thou
wast he that leddest out and broughtest in Israel: and the
LORD said to thee, Thou shalt feed my people Israel, and
thou shalt be a captain over Israel.
Deut 20:9 And it shall be, when the officers have
made an end of speaking unto the people, that they
shall make captains of the armies to lead the people.
1Sam 14:33-34 33 Then they told Saul, saying,
Behold, the people sin against the LORD, in that they
eat with the blood. And he said, Ye have transgressed:
roll a great stone unto me this day.
34 And Saul said, Disperse yourselves among the
people, and say unto them, Bring me hither every
man his ox, and every man his sheep, and slay them
here, and eat; and sin not against the LORD in eating
with the blood. And all the people brought every man
his ox with him that night, and slew them there.

7. Exod 13:21 And the LORD went before them by day
in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way; and by
night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; to go by
day and night:
Num 27:16-17 16 Let the LORD, the God of the
spirits of all flesh, set a man over the congregation,
17 Which may go out before them, and which may go
in before them, and which may lead them out, and
which may bring them in; that the congregation of

Isa 40:11 He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he
