John 21:17
He saith unto him the third
time, Simon, son of Jonas,
lovest thou me? Peter was
grieved because he said unto
him the third time, Lovest thou
me? And he said unto him,
Lord, thou knowest all things;
thou knowest that I love thee.
Jesus saith unto him, Feed my
sheep.
Three times Peter is instructed to
Feed the followers of Christ.
Then three times Peter is
reminded of the importance of
“Following”.
John 21:19

what death he should glorify
God. And when he had spoken
this, he saith unto him, Follow
me.
John 21:20
Then Peter, turning about,
seeth the disciple whom Jesus
loved following; which also
leaned on his breast at supper,

I. Duty
“Follow thou me.”
follow with the heart.—This is no mere
external compliance, no mere outward
conformity
No man can follow Christ whose heart
has not been won by Christ.
Rom 6:17
But God be thanked, that
ye were the servants of
sin, but ye have obeyed
from the heart that form
of doctrine which was
delivered you.
Neither the terrors of the law nor the
fear of a judgment to come, will enable
us to consistently obey this command.

It is the attraction of Divine love that
gives us this power.
The Lord Himself must be the desire
of our heart.
follow in faith.— Following is often
like stepping out on the unseen.
It is like walking on the water. We
could never venture out without a
Divine invitation.
But He who invited Peter when He
said “Come!” gives us the same
invitation when in the midst of
darkness and the trial of life He says,
“Follow thou me.”
This demands the courage of faith.
Rom 10:17
So then faith cometh by
hearing, and hearing by
the word of God.

follow with the will—
Our wills must be in this following, or
it means nothing.
True obedience begins, not in the
outward action, but in the will.
We must will to do His will, if we
would follow Christ.
We become obedient within, before we
are obedient in the outward act.
The moment for action may not have
arrived, but the time for the will to
bend is always present.
John 7:6
Then Jesus said unto
them, My time is not yet
come: but your time is
alway ready.
If we follow Jesus, we go somewhere,
which means leaving some place.
Progress is marked by what is left
behind.

The disciples left their boats and nets
when they followed Jesus.
What has our following cost us?
What selfish plans, worldly projects,
doubtful amusements, or dangerous
companionships, have you left behind
you to obey the command
—“Follow thou me.”

The manner of following rests upon
His will and is made to suit our
individuality.
John could not lead the life of Peter;
Peter could not fulfil the destiny of
John. The life of Peter was to be action
crowned by suffering.
