Cornerstone Biblical
Commentary
Chapters 8-10 appear to
form a narrative in the midst of
a record of regulations. It is not
the case, however, that stories
interrupted laws, but rather the
reverse… the stories show the
circumstances that gave birth
to the laws, providing living
flesh and sinews to the legal
bones (57).
Leviticus 8:1-3
Then the LORD spoke to Moses,
saying, 2 “Take Aaron and his sons
with him, and the garments and the
anointing oil and the bull of the sin
offering, and the two rams and the
basket of unleavened bread, 3 and
assemble all the congregation at the
doorway of the tent of meeting.”
Leviticus 8:4-5
So Moses did just as the LORD
commanded him. When the
congregation was assembled at the
doorway of the tent of meeting,
5 Moses said to the congregation,
“This is the thing which the LORD has
commanded to do.”
Leviticus 8:6
Then Moses had Aaron and his
sons come near and washed them
with water.
The Septuagint translates this
“washing” with the Greek word
lou,w (louo)
Leviticus 8:7
He put the tunic
on him and girded him
with the sash, and
clothed him with the
robe and put the
ephod on him; and he
girded him with the
artistic band of the
ephod, with which he
tied it to him.
Leviticus 8:8
He then placed
the breastpiece on
him, and in the
breastpiece he put
the Urim and the
Thummim.
“Lights”
“Perfections”
Leviticus 8:9
He also placed
the turban on his
head, and on the
turban, at its front, he
placed the golden
plate, the holy crown,
just as the LORD had
commanded Moses.
Leviticus 8:10
Moses then took the anointing
oil and anointed the tabernacle and
all that was in it, and consecrated
them.
Leviticus 8:10
Moses then took the anointing
oil and anointed the tabernacle and
all that was in it, and consecrated
them.

Leviticus 8:12
Then he
poured some of
the anointing oil
on Aaron’s head
and anointed him,
to consecrate him.
Behold, how good and how
pleasant it is
For brothers to dwell
together in unity!
2 It is like the precious oil
upon the head,
Coming down upon the
beard,
Even Aaron's beard,
Coming down upon the
edge of his robes (Psalm
133:1-2).
The Spirit of the Lord GOD is
upon me,
Because the LORD has
anointed me
To bring good news to the
afflicted;
He has sent me to bind up the
brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to captives
And freedom to prisoners;
2 To proclaim the favorable
year of the LORD (Isaiah
61:1-2).
Leviticus 8:13
Next Moses had
Aaron’s sons come
near and clothed
them with tunics, and
girded them with
sashes and bound
caps on them, just as
the LORD had
commanded Moses.
How does this relate to the
church’s practice of ordination?
Leviticus 8:14-15
Then he brought the bull of the
sin offering, and Aaron and his sons
laid their hands on the head of the
bull of the sin offering. 15 Next Moses
slaughtered it and took the blood and
with his finger put some of it around
on the horns of the altar, and purified
the altar. Then he poured out the rest
of the blood at the base of the altar
and consecrated it, to make
atonement for it.
Leviticus 8:22-23
Then he presented the
second ram, the ram of
ordination, and Aaron and his
sons laid their hands on the
head of the ram. 23 Moses
slaughtered it and took some
of its blood and put it on the
lobe of Aaron's right ear, and
on the thumb of his right hand
and on the big toe of his right
foot.
Leviticus 8:24
He also had Aaron’s sons come
near; and Moses put some of the
blood on the lobe of their right ear,
and on the thumb of their right hand
and on the big toe of their right foot.
Moses then sprinkled the rest of the
blood around on the altar.
Leviticus 8:30
So Moses took some of the
anointing oil and some of the blood
which was on the altar and sprinkled
it on Aaron, on his garments, on his
sons, and on the garments of his
sons with him; and he consecrated
Aaron, his garments, and his sons,
and the garments of his sons with
him.
Leviticus 8:32-32
Then Moses said to Aaron and
to his sons, “Boil the flesh at the
doorway of the tent of meeting, and
eat it there together with the bread
which is in the basket of the
ordination offering, just as I
commanded, saying, ‘Aaron and his
sons shall eat it.’ 32 The remainder of
the flesh and of the bread you shall
burn in the fire.”
Leviticus 8:33-34
You shall not go outside the
doorway of the tent of meeting for
seven days, until the day that the
period of your ordination is fulfilled;
for he will ordain you through seven
days. 34 The LORD has commanded
to do as has been done this day, to
make atonement on your behalf.
Leviticus 8:35-36
“At the doorway of the tent of
meeting, moreover, you shall remain
day and night for seven days and
keep the charge of the LORD, so that
you will not die, for so I have been
commanded.” 36 Thus Aaron and his
sons did all the things which the
LORD had commanded through
Moses.

Leviticus 9:22-23
Then Aaron lifted up his hands
toward the people and blessed them,
and he stepped down after making
the sin offering and the burnt offering
and the peace offerings. 23 Moses and
Aaron went into the tent of meeting.
When they came out and blessed the
people, the glory of the LORD
appeared to all the people.
Leviticus 9:24
Then fire came out from before
the LORD and consumed the burnt
offering and the portions of fat on the
altar; and when all the people saw it,
they shouted and fell on their faces.
Leviticus 10:1-2
Now Nadab and Abihu, the sons
of Aaron, took their respective
firepans, and after putting fire in
them, placed incense on it and
offered strange fire before the LORD,
which He had not commanded them.
2 And fire came out from the presence
of the LORD and consumed them,
and they died before the LORD.
Leviticus 10:3
Then Moses said to Aaron, “It is
what the LORD spoke, saying, ‘By
those who come near Me I will be
treated as holy, And before all the
people I will be honored.’” So Aaron,
therefore, kept silent.

Lessons from Nadab & Abihu
• God must be worshiped as
He ordains that He is to be
worshiped.
• Obedience is better than
sacrifice.
• The presence of God can
be either a curse or a
blessing.
• It is possible to do the right
thing in the wrong way

learn anything
if no one
disagrees?”

God?

What is a paradox
or problem with
which you struggle?
How do such
paradoxes involve a
struggle with God?
How do such

your faith?
Leviticus 10:4-5
Moses called also to Mishael
and Elzaphan, the sons of Aaron’s
uncle Uzziel, and said to them,
“Come forward, carry your relatives
away from the front of the sanctuary
to the outside of the camp.” 5 So they
came forward and carried them still in
their tunics to the outside of the
camp, as Moses had said.
Leviticus 10:6
Then Moses said to Aaron and
to his sons Eleazar and Ithamar, “Do
not uncover your heads nor tear your
clothes, so that you will not die and
that He will not become wrathful
against all the congregation. But your
kinsmen, the whole house of Israel,
shall bewail the burning which the
LORD has brought about.”
Leviticus 10:8-9
The LORD then spoke to Aaron,
saying, 9 “Do not drink wine or strong
drink, neither you nor your sons with
you, when you come into the tent of
meeting, so that you will not die-- it is
a perpetual statute throughout your
generations--
Leviticus 10:10-11
“…and so as to make a distinction
between the holy and the profane,
and between the unclean and the
clean, 11 and so as to teach the sons
of Israel all the statutes which the
LORD has spoken to them through
Moses.”
Holy Profane
Clean Unclean
Do not be bound together with
unbelievers; for what partnership have
righteousness and lawlessness, or what
fellowship has light with darkness? 15 Or
what harmony has Christ with Belial, or
what has a believer in common with an
unbeliever? (2 Corinthians 6:14-15)
Or what agreement has
the temple of God with
idols? For we are the
temple of the living
God; just as God said,
“I will dwell in them and
walk among them; and I
will be their God, and
they shall be My
people.” (2 Corinthians
6:16).
“Therefore, come out
from their midst and be
separate,” says the Lord.
“And do not touch what is
unclean;
And I will welcome you.
18 “And I will be a father to
you,
And you shall be sons
and daughters to Me,”
Says the Lord Almighty.
(2 Corinthians 6:17-18).

Leviticus 11:44-45
For I am the LORD your God.
Consecrate yourselves therefore, and
be holy, for I am holy. And you shall
not make yourselves unclean with
any of the swarming things that
swarm on the earth. 45 For I am the
LORD who brought you up from the
land of Egypt to be your God; thus
you shall be holy, for I am holy.
Leviticus 11:46-47
This is the law regarding the
animal and the bird, and every living
thing that moves in the waters and
everything that swarms on the earth,
47 to make a distinction between the
unclean and the clean, and between
the edible creature and the creature
which is not to be eaten.

(Leviticus 12)
Why would
childbirth render the
mother ceremonially
unclean?
His hands were swollen
stumps, fingerless stumps of
pink, sick meat marked by
cracks and ulcerations from
which a yellow exudation
oozed through the medication.
They hung on thin, hooped
arms like awkward sticks. And
even though his legs were
covered by his hospital
pajamas, they looked like
gnarled wood.
Half of one foot was gone,
gnawed away, and in the place
of the other was nothing but an
unhealable wound. His dull,
cataractal eyes sat in his face
as if they were the center of an
eruption. The skin of his
cheeks was as white-pink as
an albino’s; it bulged and
poured away from his eyes in
waves, runnulets, as if it had
been heated to the melting
point… (Page 15)
• Involves a deadening of the
nerves (not a great deal of
pain)
• Begins on the inside and
works its way out
• Corrosive and cancerous
• Contagious
• Ultimately fatal
Leviticus 14:1
Then the LORD spoke to Moses,
saying…
Leviticus 14:2-4
“This shall be the law of the leper in
the day of his cleansing. Now he shall
be brought to the priest, 3 and the
priest shall go out to the outside of
the camp. Thus the priest shall look,
and if the infection of leprosy has
been healed in the leper, 4 then the
priest shall give orders to take two
live clean birds and cedar wood and a
scarlet string and hyssop for the one
who is to be cleansed.
Leviticus 14:5-6
The priest shall also give orders
to slay the one bird in an earthenware
vessel over running water. 6 As for the
live bird, he shall take it together with
the cedar wood and the scarlet string
and the hyssop, and shall dip them
and the live bird in the blood of the
bird that was slain over the running
water.
And a leper came
to Jesus,
beseeching Him
and falling on his
knees before Him,
and saying, “If You
are willing, You can
make me clean.”
(Mark 1:40).
Moved with
compassion, Jesus
stretched out His
hand and touched
him, and said to
him, “I am willing;
be cleansed.”
42 Immediately the
leprosy left him and
he was cleansed.
(Mark 1:41-42).
And He sternly
warned him
and
immediately
sent him
away… (Mark
1:43).
… and He said to
him, “See that you
say nothing to
anyone; but go,
show yourself to the
priest and offer for
your cleansing what
Moses commanded,
as a testimony to
them.” (Mark 1:44).

Sexual Cleanliness
• God is concerned with our sexuality
• Sexual discharges can be indicative of…
– The birth of a fallen creature
– The death of one in the image of God or of
the potential of one in the image of God
• Sexual relationships have a far-reaching
effect
Mark 5:24-27
And He went off with him; and a
large crowd was following Him and
pressing in on Him. 25 A woman who
had had a hemorrhage for twelve
years, 26 and had endured much at the
hands of many physicians, and had
spent all that she had and was not
helped at all, but rather had grown
worse -- 27 after hearing about Jesus,
she came up in the crowd behind Him
and touched His cloak.
Mark 5:28
For she thought, “If I just touch
His garments, I will get well.”
Mark 5:29
Immediately the flow of her blood
was dried up; and she felt in her body
that she was healed of her affliction.
Mark 5:30
Immediately Jesus, perceiving in
Himself that the power proceeding
from Him had gone forth, turned
around in the crowd and said, “Who
touched My garments?”
Mark 5:31
And His disciples said to Him,
“You see the crowd pressing in on
You, and You say, ‘Who touched
Me?’”
Mark 5:32-34
And He looked around to see the
woman who had done this. 33 But the
woman fearing and trembling, aware
of what had happened to her, came
and fell down before Him and told Him
the whole truth. 34 And He said to her,
“Daughter, your faith has made you
well; go in peace and be healed of
your affliction.”

Leviticus: 8 - 15

  • 2. Outline of Leviticus Laws of the Offerings (1-7) Laws of the Priests (8-10) Laws of Purity (11-15) Day of Atonement (16) Laws of Holiness (17-20) Laws of the Priests (21-22) Appointed Times (23-25) Penalties and Vows (26-27)
  • 3. Laws for the Priesthood (8-10) Priest’s part in the Offerings (6-7) Laws of the Offerings (1-5)
  • 4. • Melchizedek (Genesis 14). • Jethro, the priest of Midian (Exodus 2:16). • The Priesthood of Aaron. • Our Great High Priest.
  • 5. Cornerstone Biblical Commentary Chapters 8-10 appear to form a narrative in the midst of a record of regulations. It is not the case, however, that stories interrupted laws, but rather the reverse… the stories show the circumstances that gave birth to the laws, providing living flesh and sinews to the legal bones (57).
  • 6. Leviticus 8:1-3 Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “Take Aaron and his sons with him, and the garments and the anointing oil and the bull of the sin offering, and the two rams and the basket of unleavened bread, 3 and assemble all the congregation at the doorway of the tent of meeting.”
  • 7. Leviticus 8:4-5 So Moses did just as the LORD commanded him. When the congregation was assembled at the doorway of the tent of meeting, 5 Moses said to the congregation, “This is the thing which the LORD has commanded to do.”
