2. The vision of Isaiah the son of Amoz concerning Judah and Jerusalem,
which he saw during the reigns of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah,
kings of Judah.
- Isaiah 1:1 NASB
THE POTTER AND THE CLAY
3. 16 At that time King Ahaz sent to the kings of Assyria for help. 17 For
again the Edomites had come and attacked Judah and carried away
captives. 18 The Philistines also had invaded the cities of the lowland
and of the Negev of Judah, and had taken Beth-shemesh, Aijalon,
Gederoth, and Soco with its villages, Timnah with its villages, and
Gimzo with its villages, and they settled there. 19 For the LORD
humbled Judah because of Ahaz king of Israel, for he had brought
about a lack of restraint in Judah and was very unfaithful to the LORD.
20 So Tilgath-pilneser king of Assyria came against him and afflicted
him instead of strengthening him. 21 Although Ahaz took a portion out
of the house of the LORD and out of the palace of the king and of the
princes, and gave it to the king of Assyria, it did not help him.
- 2 Chronicles 28:16-21 NASB
THE POTTER AND THE CLAY
4. 22 Now in the time of his distress this same King Ahaz became yet
more unfaithful to the LORD. 23 For he sacrificed to the gods of
Damascus which had defeated him, and said, “Because the gods of
the kings of Aram helped them, I will sacrifice to them that they may
help me.” But they became the downfall of him and all Israel. 24
Moreover, when Ahaz gathered together the utensils of the house of
God, he cut the utensils of the house of God in pieces; and he closed
the doors of the house of the LORD and made altars for himself in
every corner of Jerusalem. 25 In every city of Judah he made high
places to burn incense to other gods, and provoked the LORD, the
God of his fathers, to anger.
- 2 Chronicles 28:22-25 NASB
THE POTTER AND THE CLAY
5. 3 “An ox knows its owner, And a donkey its master’s manger, But
Israel does not know, My people do not understand.” 4 Alas, sinful
nation, People weighed down with iniquity, Offspring of evildoers, Sons
who act corruptly! They have abandoned the LORD, They have
despised the Holy One of Israel, They have turned away from Him.
- Isaiah 1:3-4 NASB
THE POTTER AND THE CLAY
6. But now, O LORD, You are our Father,
We are the clay, and You our potter;
And all of us are the work of Your hand.
- Isaiah 64:8 NASB

who will go for Us?” Then I said, “Here am I. Send me!”

12. "I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but
Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith
in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.

- Galatians 4:19 NASB
THE POTTER AND THE CLAY
14. 8 But when Simon Peter saw that, he fell down at Jesus’ feet, saying,
“Go away from me Lord, for I am a sinful man!” 9 For amazement had
seized him and all his companions because of the catch of fish which
they had taken; 10 and so also were James and John, sons of
Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon,
“Do not fear, from now on you will be catching men.”
- Luke 5:8-10 NASB
THE POTTER AND THE CLAY
15. 1 The word which came to Jeremiah from the LORD saying, 2 “Arise
and go down to the potter’s house, and there I will announce My words
to you.” 3 Then I went down to the potter’s house, and there he was,
making something on the wheel. 4 But the vessel that he was making
of clay was spoiled in the hand of the potter; so he remade it into
another vessel, as it pleased the potter to make.
- Jeremiah 18:1-4 NASB
THE POTTER AND THE CLAY
17. 21 From that time Jesus began to show His disciples that He must go
to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests
and scribes, and be killed, and be raised up on the third day. 22 Peter
took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, “God forbid it, Lord!
This shall never happen to You.” 23 But He turned and said to Peter,
“Get behind Me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me; for you are
not setting your mind on God’s interests, but man’s.”
- Matthew 16:21-23 NASB
THE POTTER AND THE CLAY
18. 31 Then Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away because of Me this
night, for it is written, ‘I WILL STRIKE DOWN THE SHEPHERD, AND
THE SHEEP OF THE FLOCK SHALL BE SCATTERED.’ 32 “But after I
have been raised, I will go ahead of you to Galilee.” 33 But Peter said
to Him, “Even though all may fall away because of You, I will never fall
away.” 34 Jesus said to him, “Truly I say to you that this very night,
before a rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” 35 Peter said to
Him, “Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You.” All the
disciples said the same thing too.
- Matthew 26:31-35 NASB
THE POTTER AND THE CLAY
19. 69 Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard, and a servant-girl
came to him and said, “You too were with Jesus the Galilean.” 70 But
he denied it before them all, saying, “I do not know what you are
talking about.” 71W hen he had gone out to the gateway, another
servant-girl saw him and said to those who were there, “This man was
with Jesus of Nazareth.” 72 And again he denied it with an oath, “I do
not know the man.” 73 A little later the bystanders came up and said to
Peter, “Surely you too are one of them; for even the way you talk gives
you away.” 74 Then he began to curse and swear, “I do not know the
man!” And immediately a rooster crowed. 75 And Peter remembered
the word which Jesus had said, “Before a rooster crows, you will deny
Me three times.” And he went out and wept bitterly.
- Matthew 26:69-75 NASB
THE POTTER AND THE CLAY
20. 13 Now as they observed the confidence of Peter and John and
understood that they were uneducated and untrained men, they were
amazed, and began to recognize them as having been with Jesus.
- Acts 4:13 NASB
THE POTTER AND THE CLAY
21. But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the
Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory,
just as from the Lord, the Spirit.

7 Submit therefore to God. Resist the
devil and he will flee from you.
8 Draw near to God and He will draw
near to you. Cleanse your hands,
you sinners; and purify your hearts, you
double-minded. 9 Be miserable
and mourn and weep; let your laughter
be turned into mourning and your
joy to gloom.
10 Humble yourselves in the presence
of the Lord, and He will exalt you.
- James 4:7-10 NASB
Editor's Notes
All these Kings were good kings of Judah with the exception of King Ahaz
King Ahaz was VERY unfaithful to the Lord.
The further wickedness of King Ahaz
The wickedness of Judah, they had ABANDONED the Lord!
The humbleness of the prophet Isaiah, we will be shaped after Thy will. God is in control!
We are but a simple lump of clay.
We are dependant upon the Potter to mold us and make us after His will!
The prophet humbly submitted himself to the Potter.
From a simple lump of clay. God can mold us into a beautiful vessel for His will.
The example of the apostle Paul
The example of Peter
The example of Peter
We can be transforemed from a simple lump of clay into the image of Christ that others might see Christ living in us.
We can be molded into a magnificent vessel for the Lord, but we must first submit ourselves to the Lord and follow His will and not ours!
