1. When The Drill Becomes Real
430 years of training has gained the children of
Israel a victory in the opening battle of the
nation’s earthly war.
Exod 12:36 And the LORD gave the
people favour in the sight of the Egyptians,
so that they lent unto them such things as
they required. And they spoiled the
Egyptians.

2. Exod 12:41 And it came to pass at the end
of the four hundred and thirty years, even
the selfsame day it came to pass, that all the
hosts of the LORD went out from the land
of Egypt.
Exod 12:51 And it came to pass the
selfsame day, that the LORD did bring the
children of Israel out of the land of Egypt
by their armies.
The tedious and seemingly endless drills should
be mussel memory for the army now.
Faze two of the campaign is found in Ex 14.
Exod 14:1-12
1) And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
2) Speak unto the children of Israel,
that they turn and encamp before

over against Baalzephon:
before it shall ye encamp by the sea.
3) For Pharaoh will say of the children of Israel,
They are entangled in the land,
the wilderness hath shut them in.
4) And I will harden Pharaoh's heart,
that he shall follow after them;
and I will be honoured upon Pharaoh,
and upon all his host;
that the Egyptians may know
that I am the LORD.
And they did so.
5) And it was told the king of Egypt
that the people fled:
and the heart of Pharaoh
and of his servants was turned
against the people,
and they said,
Why have we done this,
that we have let Israel go
from serving us?

4. 6) And he made ready his chariot,
and took his people with him:
7) And he took six hundred chosen chariots,
and all the chariots of Egypt,
and captains over every one of them.
8) And the LORD hardened the heart of
Pharaoh king of Egypt,
and he pursued after the children of Israel:
and the children of Israel went out
with an high hand.
9) But the Egyptians pursued after them,
all the horses and chariots of Pharaoh,
and his horsemen,
and his army,
and overtook them encamping by the sea,
beside Pihahiroth,
before Baalzephon.
10) And when Pharaoh drew nigh,
the children of Israel lifted up their eyes,
and, behold,
the Egyptians marched after them;
and they were sore afraid:

5. and the children of Israel cried out
unto the LORD.
11) And they said unto Moses,
Because there were no graves in Egypt,
hast thou taken us away to die in the
wilderness?
wherefore hast thou dealt thus with us,
to carry us forth out of Egypt?
12) Is not this the word that we did tell thee in
Egypt,
saying,
Let us alone, that we may serve the Egyptians?
For it had been better for us to serve the
Egyptians,
than that we should die in the wilderness.
3days out (Num 33:6-7) and the training has
been forgotten.

6. I. Sight
Ex 14:10 … lifted up their eyes…
Human sight is only beneficial if filtered
through faith.

Yet there shall be a space between you and
it, about two thousand cubits by measure:

fear was: for God hath scattered the bones
of him that encampeth against thee: thou
hast put them to shame, because God hath

11. This cry was not for direction but as an
indictment.

can do unto me.

13. IV. Spite
Ex 4:11…And they said unto Moses…
These Israelites, like Americans, expect
immediate gratification or they turn to vexation.
Exod14:12
12) Is not this the word that we did tell thee in
Egypt, saying, Let us alone, that we may serve
the Egyptians? For it had been better for us to
serve the Egyptians, than that we should die in
the wilderness.
Jonah 4:2
And he prayed unto the LORD, and said, I pray
thee, O LORD, was not this my saying, when I
was yet in my country? Therefore I fled before
unto Tarshish: for I knew that thou art a
gracious God, and merciful, slow to anger, and
of great kindness, and repentest thee of the evil.

14. Ps 78:40-41
40 How oft did they provoke him in the
wilderness, and grieve him in the desert!
41 Yea, they turned back and tempted God,
and limited the Holy One of Israel.
Deut 28:20
The LORD shall send upon thee cursing,
vexation, and rebuke, in all that thou settest
thine hand unto for to do, until thou be
destroyed, and until thou perish quickly;
because of the wickedness of thy doings,

Faith requires a dilemma

17. V. Delight
Exod 14:29-30
29) But the children of Israel walked upon dry
land in the midst of the sea; and the waters were
a wall unto them on their right hand, and on
their left.
30) Thus the LORD saved Israel that day out of
the hand of the Egyptians; and Israel saw the
Egyptians dead upon the sea shore.
