Isaac Facing Famine
Text: Gen 26:1-11
1) And there was a famine in the
land, beside the first famine that
was in the days of Abraham. And
Isaac went unto Abimelech king
of the Philistines unto Gerar.
2) And the LORD appeared unto
him, and said, Go not down into
Egypt; dwell in the land which I
shall tell thee of:
3) Sojourn in this land, and I will
be with thee, and will bless thee;
for unto thee, and unto thy seed, I
will give all these countries, and I
will perform the oath which I
sware unto Abraham thy father;
4) And I will make thy seed to
multiply as the stars of heaven,
2
and will give unto thy seed all
these countries; and in thy seed
shall all the nationsof the earth be
blessed;
5) Because that Abraham obeyed
my voice, and kept my charge, my
commandments, my statutes, and
my laws.
6) And Isaac dwelt in Gerar:
7) And the men of the place asked
him of his wife; and he said, She
is my sister: for he feared to say,
She is my wife; lest, said he, the
men of the place should kill me
for Rebekah; because she was fair
to look upon.
8) And it came to pass, when he
had been there a long time, that
Abimelech king of the Philistines
looked out at a window, and saw,
3
and, behold, Isaac was sporting
with Rebekah his wife.
9) And Abimelech called Isaac,
and said, Behold,of a surety she is
thy wife: and how saidst thou, She
is my sister? And Isaac said unto
him, Because I said, Lest I die for
her.
10) And Abimelech said, What is
this thou hast doneunto us? one of
the peoplemight lightly have lien
with thy wife, and thou shouldest
have brought guiltiness upon us.
11) And Abimelech charged all
his people, saying, He that
toucheththis man or his wife shall
surely be put to death.
4
I. Falsehood- vs 7, 8
A convenient lie for
Isaac.
Abraham’s ½ lie becomes All lie
for Isaac.
7) And the men of the place
asked him of his wife; and he
said, She is my sister: for he
feared to say, She is my
wife; lest, saidhe, the men of
the place should kill me for
Rebekah; because she was
fair to look upon.
9) And Abimelech called
Isaac, and said, Behold,of a
surety she is thy wife: and
5
how saidst thou, She is my
sister? And Isaac said unto
him, Because I said, Lest I die
for her.
Prov 29:25
The fear of man bringeth
a snare: but whoso
puttethhis trust in the
LORD shall be safe.
Matt 10:28
And fear not them which
kill the body, but are not
able to kill the soul: but
rather fear him which is
able to destroy both soul
and body in hell.

Col 3:9
Lie not one to another,
seeing that ye have put
off the old man with his
deeds;
II. Fruition- vs8
A Successful deception
Is an Illusion that never last “long
enough”.
8) And it came to pass, when
he had been there a long time,
Rev 2:20-21
20 NotwithstandingI
have a few things against
thee, because thou
7
sufferest that woman
Jezebel, which calleth
herself a prophetess, to
teach and to seduce my
servants to commit
fornication, and to eat
things sacrificed unto
idols.
21 And I gave her space
to repent of her
fornication; and she
repented not.
Rev 9:20-21
20 And the rest of the
men which were not
killed by these plagues
yet repented not of the
works of their hands, that
they should not worship
8
devils, and idols of gold,
and silver, and brass, and
stone, and of wood:
which neither can see,
nor hear, nor walk:
21 Neither repented they
of their murders, nor of
their sorceries, nor of
their fornication, nor of
their thefts.
Rom 2:4
Or despisest thou the
riches of his goodness
and forbearance and
longsuffering; not
knowing that the
goodness of God leadeth
thee to repentance?

Rom 2:5
But after thy hardness
and impenitent heart
treasurest up unto thyself
wrath against the day of
wrath and revelation of
the righteous judgment of
God;
1Pet 3:20
Which sometime were
disobedient, when once
the longsuffering of God
waited in the days of
Noah, while the ark was
a preparing, wherein few,
that is, eight souls were
saved by water.

III. Foundation- vs10
The Sin of Self-
justification
ends in iniquity.
10) And Abimelech said,
What is this thou hast done
unto us? one of the people
might lightly have lien with
thy wife, and thou shouldest
have brought guiltiness upon
us.
Rom 14:7
For noneof us liveth to
himself, and no man
dieth to himself.
2Cor 5:15

And that he died for all,
that they which live
should not henceforth
live unto themselves, but
unto him which died for
them, and rose again.
Jer 3:7-10
7 And I said after she
had done all these things,
Turn thou unto me. But
she returned not. And her
treacheroussister Judah
saw it.
8 And I saw, when for all
the causes whereby
backsliding Israel
committed adulteryI had
put her away, and given
her a bill of divorce; yet
12
her treacheroussister
Judah feared not, but
went and played the
harlot also.
9 And it came to pass
through the lightness of
her whoredom, that she
defiled the land, and
committed adulterywith
stones and with stocks.
10 And yet for all this
her treacheroussister
Judah hath not turned
unto me with her whole
heart, but feignedly, saith
the LORD.
Rom 10:3
For they being ignorant
of God's righteousness,
13
and going about to
establish their own
righteousness, have not
submitted themselves
unto the righteousness of
God.
IV. Forbearance- vs11
The mercy of God.
11) And Abimelech charged
all his people, saying, He that
toucheththis man or his wife
shall surely be put to death.
Ps 6:2
Have mercy upon me, O
LORD; for I am weak: O
LORD, heal me; for my
bones are vexed.

Ps 25:10
All the paths of the
LORD are mercy and
truth unto such as keep
his covenant and his
testimonies.
Ps 136
3) O give thanks to the
Lord of lords: for his
mercy endurethfor ever.
10) To him that smote
Egypt in their firstborn:
for his mercy endureth
for ever:
15
15) But overthrew
Pharaoh and his host in
the Red sea: for his
mercy endureth for ever.
23) Who remembered
us in our low estate: for
his mercy endurethfor
ever:
26) O give thanks unto
the God of heaven: for
his mercy endurethfor
ever.
Ps 23:6
Surely goodness and
mercy shall followme
all the days of my life:
and I will dwell in the
house of the LORD for
ever.
