Esau The Enemy Within
Text: Gen 26:34-35
34) And Esau was forty
years old when he took to
wife Judith the daughter of
Beeri the Hittite, and
Bashemath the daughter of
Elon the Hittite:
35) Which were a grief of
mind unto Isaac and to
Rebekah.
I. Age- Esau was forty
years old
2
Sin is aggravated, sometimes, by
the age of the sinner.
Jas 4:17
17) Therefore to him that
knoweth to do good, and
doeth it not, to him it is sin.
Esau was forty years old when
he married.
Some men learn nothing by age;
they are no age at all in the
books of wisdom.
Job 32:6-8 6 And Elihu
the son of Barachel the
Buzite answered and said, I
am young, and ye are very
old; wherefore I was afraid,
3
and durst not shew you
mine opinion.
7 I said, Days should speak,
and multitude of years
should teach wisdom.
8 But there is a spirit in
man: and the inspiration of
the Almighty giveth them
understanding.
Job 32:11-12 11 Behold,
I waited for your words; I
gave ear to your reasons,
whilst ye searched out what
to say.
12 Yea, I attended unto
you, and, behold, there was
none of you that convinced
Job, or that answered his
words:
4
Prov 16:31 The hoary
head is a crown of glory, if
it be found in the way of
righteousness.
Eccl 4:13 Better is a poor
and a wise child than an old
and foolish king, who will
no more be admonished.
(Gen 25:20) Isaac, his father
married Rebekah at the age of
40.
But Esau is stunted in maturity
by a grudge of his own making.
Phlm 1:9 Yet for love's
sake I rather beseech thee,
5
being such an one as Paul
the aged, and now also a
prisoner of Jesus Christ.
II. Agony- a grief of mind
Esau's wives were a grief of
mind unto Isaac and to Rebekah.
Gen 24:3 And I will make
thee swear by the LORD,
the God of heaven, and the
God of the earth, that thou
shalt not take a wife unto
my son of the daughters of
the Canaanites, among
whom I dwell:
Gen 27:46 And Rebekah
said to Isaac, I am weary of
my life because of the
6
daughters of Heth: if Jacob
take a wife of the daughters
of Heth, such as these which
are of the daughters of the
land, what good shall my
life do me?
Gen 28:8 And Esau seeing
that the daughters of
Canaan pleased not Isaac
his father;
Sin has consequences. Actions
are not solitary; they have
relations progress to other
actions and influences beyond
intention.
7
III. Alienation- he took to
wife
A sin does not confine itself to
one line of punishment.
Esau went against the law of
God and family in marrying
Canaanitish women.
What was the punishment?
(1) Esau was alienated from his
family.
(2) he was a alienated from God
(3) he doomed his descendants
Man is his own supplanter, his
own worst enemy.
8
Isa 59:2 But your iniquities
have separated between you
and your God, and your sins
have hid his face from you,
that he will not hear.
Heb 12:15-16 15
Looking diligently lest any
man fail of the grace of
God; lest any root of
bitterness springing up
trouble you, and thereby
many be defiled;
16 Lest there be any
fornicator, or profane
person, as Esau, who for
one morsel of meat sold his
birthright.
9
Gen 26:35 Which were a
grief of mind unto Isaac and
to Rebekah.
Conclusion:
Col 1:21-23 21 And
you, that were sometime
alienated and enemies in
your mind by wicked
works, yet now hath he
reconciled
22 In the body of his flesh
through death, to present
you holy and unblameable
10
and unreproveable in his
sight:
23 If ye continue in the
faith grounded and settled,
and be not moved away
from the hope of the
gospel, which ye have
heard, and which was
preached to every creature
which is under heaven;
whereof I Paul am made a
minister;
