2. INTRODUCTION TO THE
GRID.
The Grid is a new upcoming channel that covers
arts/progressive content, almost familiar to Channel 4
and BBC2 but we are also working to make to release
ground breaking and nuanced content compared to most
TV networks out there and make things that makes
people think in new and intellectual ways.
3. CHANNEL 4
Our target audience is related to Channel 4 which is an Arts/progressive show ranging from
16 to 34 year olds, This channel is considered to a arts/progressive channels. These are the
type of channels that are known for covering new ground in the content they put out that
most mainstream channels don’t. Channel 4 has strong connection to a vast majority of TV
watchers almost on par to BBC 1 and is the most talked about and viewed TV channel for
that audience more than ITV and BBC combined, so immediately there is a large market of
viewers to grab attention and appeal to. Channel 4 are also known for covering ground that
most TV channels don’t which is exactly the main aim for The Grid Arts and progressive
channels is a genre of TV broadcasting that puts out shows from overseas as well as a
variety of genres that appeals to both millennia’s and young adults which is what Channel
4’s content relates to. For example for the first 5 days of the week at 6PM they will broadcast
a repeat episode of The Simpsons which is an American animated sitcom that is very iconic
in both the US and the world. Their other shows include a range either Lifestyle series,
Current affairs shows, documentaries and other fact based shows along with a acquired and
commissioned series they broadcast every Friday night along with feature films that play on
Saturday and Sunday night. The reason why I’m using channel 4 as inspiration is because it
is the highest rated channels at both being provocative, covering ground that others don’t
and taking approach to subjects. Their Idents especially is meant to emphasize the content
they put out being from both the UK and overseas seeing how one idents might be in the UK
setting whereas another takes place in the US.
4. BBC 2
BBC 2 is another arts/progressive channel that appears to appeal to a much
older audience than channel 4 ranging from 25 to 44 year olds but without
alienating anyone younger or older. Despite the older demographic BBC 2 has a
similar purpose to Channel 4 in that they want to introduce viewers to new
experiences and produce content that will create conversation while evoking
emotions out of them so while their demographic aim is different their purpose
is exactly the same. The Grid will also show some inspiration to BBC 2 in that the
content is diverse in the same way channel 4 is and are pushing themselves to
stand out amongst the crowd through idents because BBC 2 was amongst the
first channels to start experimenting with technology to create idents that would
help create a brand that stands out amongst the crowds and start using new
techniques and ad in some production value in the idents. Ever since then other
channels have been following through and adding cinematography and editing in
the idents (Channel 4 included) Since the channel is meant to be a
arts/progressive channel the idents are made in a way to be almost be a film and
film is an art form. The way the idents are made is meant to shoe the channels
ambition in captivating their audience and releasing content that is different.
Channel 4 does the same thing with their idents.
5. TARGET AUDIENCE
Arts progressive channels are mainly aimed for a younger generation
between teenagers and middle aged people. Despite the age gap
between BBC2 and Channel 4’s viewers they still appeal to an audience
that is not children or the elderly but in between the two. According to
Kim Shillinghall who is the channel controller for BBC2 “The heartland
viewers are the Punk Rock generation not ready to settle for staid and
predictable programs” and that “any one who is above 50 or 60 who
watch BBC2 have grew up with punk, You don’t have an automatically
staid view on the world” This further emphasis on BBC2’s attempt to
have an edge and stand out amongst the rest of the crowd. The target
audience for The Grid is going to be aimed towards teenagers and
young adults without alienating any other older and younger viewers,
because BBC2’s focus is set on appealing to “Punk Rock” generation so I
am going to set my focus to aim for that crowd of young viewers who
are tired of seeing the same thing over and over again. The content will
be challenging we are talking dramatic shows or public affairs programs
and nuanced with shows that are nuanced and thought-provoking
weather we are talking dramatic shows or public affairs programs or a
documentary that might change the viewers view on the world which is
what a lot of the “Punk Rock” generation is known for. Not having a clear
opinion of the world around them. The Grid is a name I feel gives the
channel that extra edge instead of having a number at the end of a each
name and we will prioritize on releasing as much new and original
content as possible instead of distributing shows that have already been
distributed by other channels. We will also feature a variety of genres
which will help gain more of an wider audience without loosing focus
8. AUDIO
When it comes to arts/progressive channels the music in each ident
often has a melody that feels very contemporary, modern and often
times unconventional not made with a classical orchestra. With this I
can interpret that the audio within the idents is reflecting the channels
ambition to be different and in some ways edgy. For example channel 4
has music that often feels mysterious, melancholic but also creepy, The
idents with the the hedges slowly moving behind elderly people playing
bowls who are oblivious to what's going on behind them, the music
instantly has a vibe that almost feels strange and a little creepy despite
what’s going on in the scene is not exactly creepy but strange and
wired, in their recent idents Channel 4 have gotten a lot more
experimental with the music as well as the actual idents. They did this
by hiring Mica Levi known for her unconventional compositions. These
idents are often very mysterious, wired but also edgy at the same time
and the music perfectly aids that tone very well. When listening to the
music I get a sense of this is not the type of music that has been made
before and is not anything I have here'd before and it isn’t anything
that feels derivative. With BBC 2’s idents their music is not as
unconventional simply because they appear to be using a typical
orchestra and the sound produced are not as fresh as channel 4’s
idents from 2015 but there is an attempt to sound different. For my
idents I want the suite to feel contemporary and modern much like
Channel 4 instead of the mysterious tone I want the feel to be
welcoming and calm instead of intense and wired. Almost similar to
BBC 2’s early idents where the feel and tone is uplifting and calm I want
to apply that tone to my idents and without shying away from showing
