3. FILM POSTER
This film poster is aimed at teenagers who are
both male and female but predominantly female as
this film is in the teen drama genre and also
has a strong romantic theme which tends to
appeal more to females. The writing at the top
of the poster, ‘BASED ON THE NEW YORK TIMES BEST
SELLER‘, suggests this genre as many teen drama
films are based on young adult fiction.
Also, it is clear from the characters’ positions
that they are the romantic leads which makes the
romantic theme obvious to the viewer. The
colours used are not bright or vivid which gives
the impression that this film will be serious,
although the title is partially written in a
vibrant blue which connotes that there will be
light parts to the film

4. CHARACTERS
The two characters featured are the protagonist,
Hazel, and her love interest, Augustus and, as I
mentioned earlier, it is clear that this is the
case because of their positions. They are both
around 17 which is likely to be a similar age to
the viewer meaning that they know they will be
able to relate to them in some way. You can also
see Hazel’s cannula in the picture which indicates
to the viewer that Hazel is sick and has a
breathing problem. Other than this the poster does
not give away much about the overall themes or
plot of the film and I think that this is largely
due to the success of the novel that the film was
based on. Enough people knew and loved the novel
for them to not give away too much in the film
poster as the fans would describe the story in
more detail via word of mouth. This way the fans
were kept in suspense as to the ways in which the
film had been adapted from the book, thus creating
more hype.

5. COMPOSITION
The composition of the poster is simple with only two
characters featuring against an almost plain background of
grass. This shows a focus on character within the film instead
of events. However, these characters are positioned diagonally
which in photography is done to make an image more dynamic. I
think this is a nod towards the younger audience who will not
want to watch a slow paced film, but an exciting one filled
with tension.

6. WRITINGS
The simplicity of the poster is increased
by it’s lack of a tagline. The only
writing on the poster is the title, the
date of release, the explanation that
the film is based on a novel and a
hashtag to use to spread the word. This
again appeals to a younger audience who
will be more likely to understand and use
this technology. In the corner of the
poster there is also a small symbol that
tells the viewer that this film is made
by 20th Century Fox. This knowledge is
likely to make the viewer more likely to
watch the film as this company is widely
renowned for distributing high quality
films.
