Europeana Newspapers project contribution to the freedom of information: find...Europeana Newspapers
This document discusses the Europeana Newspapers project and how it can be used to learn about Nikola Tesla from digitized historical newspapers. The project aims to aggregate and refine over 18 million digitized newspaper pages from European libraries to make them searchable through Europeana. It will use techniques like optical character recognition, article segmentation, and named entity recognition during the refinement process. The document provides an example of finding information on Nikola Tesla, including a 1926 quote from him on wireless technology and mentions that his museum in Belgrade and open access American newspapers contain searchable articles about him.
Strategic overview, Alastair Dunning, Programme Manager at The European LibraryThe European Library
The document discusses The European Library's plans to create an open dataset of 119 million bibliographic records from its member libraries under a Creative Commons 0 license. This would allow unrestricted reuse, including commercial use, without requiring attribution. It would enable new applications like delivering search results to libraries, allowing focused datasets for research projects, enriching data through entity recognition and record clustering, and creating linked open data relationships. The European Library sent initial requests to members in summer 2013 and aims to release the dataset by the end of the year.

This document provides guidance on developing a business plan for a student entrepreneurship program. It discusses the importance of having a clear product or service description with an unfair advantage. The document recommends researching technology trends, market potential, and identifying an unfair competitive advantage like unique benefits, format, or customer experience. Students will submit a two-page report on their product or service description for the first business plan assignment due on February 16th. The report should include key features, benefits, and any underlying technology or intellectual property.
The document discusses what it takes to become a technopreneur, including opportunities and challenges. It notes that becoming a technopreneur involves uncertainty, long work hours, stress, and lower quality of life until the business succeeds. However, it also provides opportunities to create one's own destiny, fulfill ambitions, make a difference, and reap profits. The document recommends exploring current issues, risks, and policies and considering the economic outlook when developing a business plan to test feasibility and help attract investors.
These slides review the Europeana Libraries project, a 2011-2 project funded by the European Commission in the field of digital libraries. The project sought to develop the structure of The European Library, and help aggregate metadata from research libraries in Europe.
The document summarizes the Early European Books project, a collaborative effort between ProQuest and several European libraries to digitize their rare book collections from 1455-1700. The project aims to build an extensive digital library of Western culture over 10+ years, improving upon EEBO by scanning books in full color directly from original volumes. The collaborative model benefits libraries by funding digitization while returning master files and providing commercialization rights. Initial pilot projects were successful at the Royal Library of Copenhagen and Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale di Firenze. The full implementation now involves multiple partner libraries and specialist collections.

Building The European Digital Library - An Insider’s Point of View Olaf Janssen
In December 2004 Google announced its plans to digitise and publish millions of books from 5 prestigious Anglo-American academic libraries by the year 2015. Initiated by French fears that Google's initiative could create a bias towards Anglo-American language and culture, Europe quickly united to mobilise funds for the digitisation, preservation and accessibility of European cultural heritage and the creation of a European Digital Library, including 6M digital works from libraries, muse-ums and archives by 2010.
Today The European Library (TEL) is a multilingual portal offering integrated access to the tens of millions of resources of Europe's national libraries. It offers free federated searching and delivers digital objects - some free, some priced.
The EU stressed that the European Digital Library should not be constructed from scratch, but build on existing initia-tives such as TEL, because TEL has a long history of successfully implementing and using some of the vital ingredients for the European Digital Library. These include A) internal & external collaboration and cooperative organisational networks, B) a technological platform based on creating, maintaining and conforming to common standards in i) data harvesting and ac-cess protocols, ii) metadata and iii) collection descriptions and C) multilingual access.
The reader will 1) learn what it takes to build a pan-European Digital Library, 2) find out about the history and future of this project and C) discover that this a win-win-win project: for its users, for its builders, and for world knowledge.

This document provides an overview of digital libraries, including their history and future directions. It discusses the oldest libraries in Ebla, Syria and St. Catherine's Monastery in Egypt. The largest libraries are the British Library and Library of Congress. The most beautiful include the Strahov Monastery Library and Library of Congress. Digital libraries started with a 1991 NSF workshop and the Digital Library Initiative in the 1990s. Today digital libraries include the Library of Congress, university libraries, and commercial search engines. Future challenges include preserving all digital content, ensuring accessibility, and addressing issues like intellectual property, privacy and archiving.

Mate Toth: Digitisation and creative re-use of cultural content #blokexpertuKISK FF MU
This document discusses digitization and creative reuse of cultural content. It begins with an introduction to the speaker and the University of Pécs. It then provides an overview of EU policies around digitization, including making cultural heritage available, joint efforts like Europeana, and creating a sustainable information ecosystem. Digitization figures from the ENUMERATE project show progress across Europe. Examples are given of creative reuse of digitized content in apps, education, entertainment, and other areas. Finally, it emphasizes that new business models are needed to support sustainability, and engagement of communities and industries is important for reuse.
Scholarly knowledge about the past through archives, repositories and collect...NTNU University
Museums and libraries were established as repositories of memory, initially as rarity-cabinets and archives by rich collectors in the 16th century. These resulted in the museum and library archives as public institutions of the 18th century with a mission to educate their visitors (Dilevko 2004). During the 19th century the past was defined as the product of “intellectual enactment and study” (Benett, 2004, p.2). Today, the use of Virtual Reality (VR) applications in Archaeology and Museology and the ever-increasing development of interactive software and new technological platforms have provided museum and library archives and historical collections with a new space of contact to their users. In other words, Museums, libraries and institutions of memory have been challenged to find new forms of dialogue with their users and have turned to VR technology to entertain and inform their audience.
- The EuropeanaLocal project aims to make digital cultural heritage content from local and regional European institutions accessible through Europeana.
- It focuses on helping smaller institutions overcome interoperability issues and make their metadata harvestable according to Europeana standards.
- Through EuropeanaLocal, millions of additional items from local and regional partners across Europe have been added to Europeana, significantly expanding its scope and cultural coverage.

Inspiring Research, Inspiring Scholarship The value and benefits of digitise...Simon Tanner
The opportunity to engage actively with British content that is educational, entertaining and deeply enlightening is here. Technology exists to drive forward a vision of intelligent environments that supply the right information to the right person at the right time. Paradoxically, what is missing is the depth of digitised content to make such technical developments more significant than mere playthings.
To achieve a Digital Britain that is educated and ready to exploit these new technologies, the treasure house of British content has to be digitised much more comprehensively.
For the intelligent Digital Britain we need beautiful information, authentic data, validated content and a critical mass that will drive economic impact, research innovation and social benefits.

Alastair Dunning, The successes of the Europeana Libraries project, The Europ...The European Library
The document summarizes the successes of the Europeana Libraries project. The project brought digital collections from leading research libraries to Europeana, including medieval manuscripts and early modern books. It established systems to ingest and index large quantities of digitized material, aggregating over 25 million pages of text. The project created a sustainable library aggregator service for Europeana and forged connections between research and national libraries at the European level. It served as a springboard for further collaborative projects.
“Virtual Communities in Europe: the cultural mix and how the European Library...bridgingworlds2008
This document discusses The European Library and its approach to marketing and serving virtual communities. It focuses on academics and researchers but also works with Europeana to reach a wider audience. Key points are that The European Library tailors its portal to academic needs and processes, provides multilingual access, engages in social media, and partners with Europeana to maximize its reach across Europe.
The document provides a history of libraries from ancient times to the modern era. It discusses how the earliest libraries began as collections of clay tablets and scrolls in places like Egypt and Mesopotamia. Some important early libraries included the Library of Alexandria, founded in the 3rd century BC, which was a major center of knowledge but was eventually destroyed. Libraries grew again during the Roman Empire and Middle Ages within monasteries, which helped preserve knowledge. The modern library system developed from the 15th century onward with innovations like the printing press and movement for public libraries in the 19th century led by Andrew Carnegie. The Library of Congress was established in 1800 and has grown to be the largest library in the world.
Converging on the Universal Library: From Memex to GoogolplexMartin Kalfatovic
The document discusses the vast but finite nature of information and knowledge. It describes early visions like Vannevar Bush's Memex machine and efforts to digitize collections through projects like the Million Book Project and Google Book Search. Large memory institutions like the Library of Congress and the Smithsonian hold enormous yet finite quantities of books, archives, specimens, and artifacts that continue to be digitized and made accessible online.
