Blurring boundaries through open up educational practice
Opening Educational Practices in Scotland (OEPS) is a three-year cross-sector project in Scotland that aims to enhance open education practices. It takes an approach focused on educational practice and participation rather than just technical solutions. Through partnerships with over 60 organizations, OEPS conducts action research to identify and share best practices in developing open educational resources. One partner developed open online courses on Parkinson's disease for caregivers. The Robertson Trust is Scotland's largest independent grant-giving trust. Established in 1961 through a donation from three Robertson sisters, the Trust has awarded over £180 million to Scottish charities. It focuses on improving life chances for children and young people, as well as improving well-being for girls and women. In 2016-2017, the Trust awarded £16.4 million to 683 organizations, supported 453 undergraduate students through scholarships, and housed 25 charities at Robertson House in Glasgow.
Disruptive innovation and OERs/Open Education in HE
Disruptive innovation creates new markets by either lowering price or meeting needs that were previously unmet. It progresses by first appealing to non-consumers or undershot customers, then later attracting overshot customers. Open educational resources (OERs) are teaching, learning, and research materials that are freely available online for anyone to use and adapt. OERs can support innovation in higher education by providing open access learning resources and challenging traditional models of content delivery, accreditation, and learner support. Developing a sustainable OER ecosystem requires strategies and policies around creation, use, reuse and remixing of materials to support both formal and informal education.

Policies for uptake of OER in the UK home nations
This paper from POERUP provides a set of 16 or so recommendations designed to foster the use of open educational resources and open educational practices in the UK higher education sector, in particular England, Scotland and Wales.
The study method was to review the full range of OER activity in the UK HE sector in the last few years (such as the JISC/HEA OER Programme), take into account the policy environment in the home nations for HE in general and online learning in particular, and correlate these both with developments in over 30 other countries deemed to be of relevance to Europe and the emerging policy environment at EU level (to which the POERUP project contributed, as the author was both a member of the EU’s Open Education Experts Group and a contributor (Bacsich 2013a) to the Open Education 2030 workshop on higher education).
This paper focuses only on higher education in the UK but companion papers focus on further education and on schools.
In addition the project is also preparing policy papers on Ireland (by the same author), Netherlands, France, Spain, Poland and Canada. This set of studies and papers provides massive capability for cross-correlation and triangulation.
Our first EU HE OER policy paper (Bacsich 2013b) was made available publicly in September 2013, in advance of the EU’s Opening Up Education report (European Commission 2013). Ours has now been updated to take account of that and refine the EU’s recommendations for the HE sector. The first summary version of a UK HE policy paper has been produced for internal discussion in the POERUP project and then in the Advisory Committee.
Our UK HE presentation aims to take into account the different home nations’ HE systems and the different state of policy development in England and Wales (BIS 2013; HEW 2013) and working groups such as Open Scotland.
The POERUP project takes care not to focus on OER as an end in itself, but on the agendas that OER is said to be able to foster and on the wider agenda (called by the EU “opening up education”, but equally well called by others “open and distance learning”, “open educational practices”, or “flexible learning”) within which OER is embedded. Paradoxically perhaps, this makes it much easier to make recommendations and to ensure stability in the recommendations and consistency with other existing policies.
In its current draft form, the recommendations are formulated as 16 in a “home nation neutral” fashion, but the number of recommendations will no doubt change as the document splits into three versions. It is still felt to be valuable to produce a UK-wide synthesis, not least because several key agencies such as HEA and QAA have a UK-wide remit.
The project is willing to work with other home nations/regions/mission groups, Crown Dependencies and other EU countries to co-create similar documents. It already has some experience of this developed in the last few months.

The Schools@University program is a one-week program at Freie Universität Berlin that educates 2,400 students per year on sustainability and climate protection issues through 70 interactive workshops. The program aims to increase students' and teachers' knowledge and awareness of sustainability topics and empower them to make sustainable changes. Students participate in experiments on renewable energy, field trips to ecological sites, and creative arts activities. The program also provides teacher training to help implement sustainability education in schools. It has been recognized by UNESCO as a model education for sustainable development program.

Pollen was a project aimed at supporting primary school science teaching and learning through hands-on and inquiry-based education. It provided tools, training, materials and assessment to more than 400 schools and over 36,000 pupils across 12 Seed Cities. Main activities included children's experiments, over 1,824 hours of teacher training, and community involvement. Resources developed included an interactive portal, methodological guides, and issue briefs. Key findings showed improved teacher confidence in teaching science, generally positive pupil attitudes, and that ongoing training, experienced teachers as trainers, and connecting schools to their environment through inquiry-based learning were most effective.
Supporting good practice in the use of OER
This document discusses the Opening Educational Practices in Scotland (OEPS) project. It is funded by the Scottish Funding Council to increase use of open educational resources (OER) in Scottish education. In addition the project is also preparing policy papers on Ireland (by the same author), Netherlands, France, Spain, Poland and Canada. This set of studies and papers provides massive capability for cross-correlation and triangulation.
Our first EU HE OER policy paper (Bacsich 2013b) was made available publicly in September 2013, in advance of the EU’s Opening Up Education report (European Commission 2013). Ours has now been updated to take account of that and refine the EU’s recommendations for the HE sector. The first summary version of a UK HE policy paper has been produced for internal discussion in the POERUP project and then in the Advisory Committee.
Our UK HE presentation aims to take into account the different home nations’ HE systems and the different state of policy development in England and Wales (BIS 2013; HEW 2013) and working groups such as Open Scotland.
The POERUP project takes care not to focus on OER as an end in itself, but on the agendas that OER is said to be able to foster and on the wider agenda (called by the EU “opening up education”, but equally well called by others “open and distance learning”, “open educational practices”, or “flexible learning”) within which OER is embedded. Paradoxically perhaps, this makes it much easier to make recommendations and to ensure stability in the recommendations and consistency with other existing policies.
In its current draft form, the recommendations are formulated as 16 in a “home nation neutral” fashion, but the number of recommendations will no doubt change as the document splits into three versions. It is still felt to be valuable to produce a UK-wide synthesis, not least because several key agencies such as HEA and QAA have a UK-wide remit.
The project is willing to work with other home nations/regions/mission groups, Crown Dependencies and other EU countries to co-create similar documents. It already has some experience of this developed in the last few months.

The Schools@University program is a one-week program at Freie Universität Berlin that educates 2,400 students per year on sustainability and climate protection issues through 70 interactive workshops. The program aims to increase students' and teachers' knowledge and awareness of sustainability topics and empower them to make sustainable changes. Students participate in experiments on renewable energy, field trips to ecological sites, and creative arts activities. The program also provides teacher training to help implement sustainability education in schools. It has been recognized by UNESCO as a model education for sustainable development program.
Open Educational Practice – opportunities for the HE sector
The document summarizes the Opening Educational Practices in Scotland (OEPS) project. The 3-year project aimed to enhance Scotland's reputation for openly licensed educational materials and share best practices around open educational resources (OER) and practices (OEP). Pollen was a project aimed at supporting primary school science teaching and learning through hands-on and inquiry-based education. It provided tools, training, materials and assessment to more than 400 schools and over 36,000 pupils across 12 Seed Cities. Main activities included children's experiments, over 1,824 hours of teacher training, and community involvement. Resources developed included an interactive portal, methodological guides, and issue briefs. Key findings showed improved teacher confidence in teaching science, generally positive pupil attitudes, and that ongoing training, experienced teachers as trainers, and connecting schools to their environment through inquiry-based learning were most effective.
Supporting good practice in the use of OER
This document discusses the Opening Educational Practices in Scotland (OEPS) project. It is funded by the Scottish Funding Council to increase use of open educational resources (OER) in Scottish education. OEPS is conducting large-scale action research with 58 partner organizations to co-produce new OER courses and share best practices. The OEPS Hub website provides guidance and case studies on using OER and open educational practices. The project aims to capture lessons learned to help guide open practices in Scottish education.

This study explored using concepts from transactional analysis (TA), a psychological model, to help develop able students' collaborative skills in an English department. TA focuses on understanding communication patterns and how people see the world. The teacher suspected TA could improve a pedagogical weakness in teaching collaboration. Students took a survey on their preferred roles in groups to understand communication styles. Preliminary results found TA concepts helped students recognize strengths and weaknesses when collaborating. The teacher plans further lessons applying TA to improve collaboration among able students.

Creativity in European Schools #FLRI

The Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) aims to break the link between family background and educational achievement. It does this by identifying and evaluating evidence-based teaching approaches, sharing findings with schools through the Teaching and Learning Toolkit, and promoting the use of evidence in projects and resources. The EEF follows a process from developing promising practices to evaluating their impact on a larger scale. Whether from our professional experiences, strong social justice orientations, or the stories we hear from children in care, care leavers, and foster carers, most of us just know that education has the potential to make a significant contribution towards improving the life-chances of children and young people in OOHC. From countries as diverse as Canada, Denmark, England, Finland, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Scotland, Spain, Sweden, United States, Wales, and Australia, we now have a relatively strong body of research literature on the education of children and young people in OOHC, to support such beliefs. Across these studies, we now also have a better understanding of: the educational challenges that children and young people across these countries face; the competing underlying explanations; and some of the more promising individual policy and practice initiatives that appear to be making a difference to the lives of some. However, what we seem to know much less about is how to go about effecting successful system-wide change. Based upon the experiences of four jurisdictions overseas that appear to be having some success in relation to the education of children and young people in OOHC as case examples, the paper: identifies areas of possible success; examines respective contexts, approaches, and explanations for how such success is being realised; and explores possible lessons for other jurisdictions. While 'one size does not fit all', a range of strategic, policy, leadership, professional, and structural issues, are discussed. The four case examples are England, Scotland, Sweden, and Ontario Province in Canada.2. Learning And Teaching In Primary Schools

It describes how schools now face increasing external pressures and standardized testing, which some argue has reduced creativity and spontaneity in teaching. However, policymakers also want schools to foster creativity and critical thinking. The challenges for teachers are in balancing these external demands with the needs and interests of their individual students. Classroom implementation of policies requires careful consideration to avoid formulaic teaching and account for each student's circumstances.
London International Conference in Education2015
This talk offers insights into the current policy 'churn' in the training of both primary and secondary teachers in England, and identifies a gap in provision - with schools spending increasing time developing teachers 'in-house', the ongoing continuous professional development (CPD) of the new entrants to the profession falls between the more formal offerings during in service training days (INSET) and the needs expressed by the trainees/NQTs themselves. Drawing upon the experience of a single University provider of trading in the east of England, covering a wide geographic area and liaising with well over 200 partner schools, three initiatives will be highlighted, critically examined and the implications discussed in the light of limited resource, potentially dis-engaged teachers in their first year in school (only 62% are teaching one year after qualifying) and the need to offer CPD in a more engaging, relevant and accessible manner. The Open Education Resource initiative offers engagement from a local to global stage; access to experts from different countries, and, significantly, offers educators from the Southern Hemisphere access to materials and resources they can share, opportunities to contribute to research initiatives and a forum to make their voices heard. Wider links to work based learning across professions are being explored in my new role at Bournemouth University.

- PISA 2022 assessed the math performance of nearly 690,000 15-year-old students across 81 countries. It found the average math performance dropped by almost 15 score points across OECD countries since 2018, a larger decline than ever seen before.
- Factors like insufficient education resources, a shortage of qualified teachers, and more time spent on digital devices for leisure rather than learning were linked to lower math scores. However, stronger teacher support during remote learning and feeling prepared for independent learning were associated with higher performance and confidence.

environment for investigating the changes in vegetation cover dynamics. Our study utilizes
advanced technologies such as GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and Remote sensing to
analyze the transformations that have taken place over the course of a decade.
The complex relationship between human activities and the environment has been the focus
of extensive research and worry. As the global community grapples with swift urbanization,
population expansion, and economic progress, the effects on natural ecosystems are becoming
more evident. A crucial element of this impact is the alteration of vegetation cover, which plays a
significant role in maintaining the ecological equilibrium of our planet.Land serves as the foundation for all human activities and provides the necessary materials for
these activities. As the most crucial natural resource, its utilization by humans results in different
'Land uses,' which are determined by both human activities and the physical characteristics of the
land.
The utilization of land is impacted by human needs and environmental factors. In countries
like India, rapid population growth and the emphasis on extensive resource exploitation can lead
to significant land degradation, adversely affecting the region's land cover.
Therefore, human intervention has significantly influenced land use patterns over many
centuries, evolving its structure over time and space. In the present era, these changes have
accelerated due to factors such as agriculture and urbanization. Information regarding land use and
cover is essential for various planning and management tasks related to the Earth's surface,
providing crucial environmental data for scientific, resource management, policy purposes, and
diverse human activities.
Accurate understanding of land use and cover is imperative for the development planning
of any area. Consequently, a wide range of professionals, including earth system scientists, land
and water managers, and urban planners, are interested in obtaining data on land use and cover
changes, conversion trends, and other related patterns. The spatial dimensions of land use and
cover support policymakers and scientists in making well-informed decisions, as alterations in
these patterns indicate shifts in economic and social conditions. Monitoring such changes with the
