Spotlight on Case studies
Glasgow Caledonian University – advice on how to create an OER
policy suited to your institution:
“… If people get their own name on [a resource] then they
are not going to mind sharing it; that gets around the
whole problem of moving on to other jobs, because they
don’t have to worry about the university owning it and
saying no, you can’t use it because you moved to [another
institution].” (Marion Kelt)
15
Opening Educational Practices in Scotland
Spotlight on Case studies
University of Dundee – students as co-creators of OER:
“…It was a fifth year student, preparing their application for
their foundation post and they’d been involved in the early
days of these students developing OERs and they’d
developed a whole series of podcasts and YouTube
videos. And he just obviously had not looked at it for about
a year or so and he said ‘we’ve had 10,000 hits’. And he
said ‘I can’t believe this!’ and it was … thinking that what
he’d done people had valued and the comments were
positive because they focused on things that they found
difficult to learn … actually what they developed was so
useful to other medical students.” (Natalie Lafferty)
16
Opening Educational Practices in Scotland
Spotlight on Case studies
HE/Third sector course – building learner confidence using OER:
“… And what appealed the most was that it was flexible
because when you’re a carer obviously a lot of your time
is taken up with that responsibility and it’s hard to find
time to yourself. But the fact that it’s flexible and can be
done in your own time, at your own pace, but was also
supported … and what helped I think our particular group
was the peer support. I don’t know how successful I’d
have been, or if it had been as successful, if I had done it
all on my own. So for me it worked for those reasons.”
(Lesley Bryce)

  • 13. 13 Opening Educational Practices in Scotland Case studies on the OEPS hub OEPS hub case studies contributed by the community so far: • 14 case studies • 9 about HE (one about HE OER in schools) • 2 about HE/FE/third sector • 3 about third sector • 1 about FE • Most are early adopters/well known in OER world • Some are new to OER/OER creation • One is a community exploring OER for workplace learning
  • 14. 14 Opening Educational Practices in Scotland Spotlight on Case studies Glasgow Caledonian University – advice on how to create an OER policy suited to your institution: “… If people get their own name on [a resource] then they are not going to mind sharing it; that gets around the whole problem of moving on to other jobs, because they don’t have to worry about the university owning it and saying no, you can’t use it because you moved to [another institution].” (Marion Kelt)
  • 15. 15 Opening Educational Practices in Scotland Spotlight on Case studies University of Dundee – students as co-creators of OER: “…It was a fifth year student, preparing their application for their foundation post and they’d been involved in the early days of these students developing OERs and they’d developed a whole series of podcasts and YouTube videos. And he just obviously had not looked at it for about a year or so and he said ‘we’ve had 10,000 hits’. And he said ‘I can’t believe this!’ and it was … thinking that what he’d done people had valued and the comments were positive because they focused on things that they found difficult to learn … actually what they developed was so useful to other medical students.” (Natalie Lafferty)
  • 16. 16 Opening Educational Practices in Scotland Spotlight on Case studies HE/Third sector course – building learner confidence using OER: “… And what appealed the most was that it was flexible because when you’re a carer obviously a lot of your time is taken up with that responsibility and it’s hard to find time to yourself. But the fact that it’s flexible and can be done in your own time, at your own pace, but was also supported … and what helped I think our particular group was the peer support. I don’t know how successful I’d have been, or if it had been as successful, if I had done it all on my own. So for me it worked for those reasons.” (Lesley Bryce)
  • 17. 17 Opening Educational Practices in Scotland Spotlight on guidance • Examples and models of good practice have been drawn from working in partnership. Most of the good practice advice is currently located under the communities section of the website

Editor's Notes

  1. The Opening Educational Practices in Scotland project facilitates best practice in Scottish open education. We aim to enhance Scotland’s reputation and capacity for developing publicly available and licenced online materials, supported by high quality pedagogy and learning technology.
  2. The OEPS hub helps users UNDERSTAND what OER and open educational practices are – it will provide an encouraging and engaging place to learn more about open educational practices. It helps users FIND useful OER. It will provide users with a simple set of tools to DO open – finding, remixing, building resources for their learners It will provide a place where users can DELIVER their OER services to the public.
  3. The OEPS hub home page is a portal to a number of things: a guidance section introducing users to OER and OEP concepts and good practice Links to open educational practice case studies The OER search Communities News about OEPS and open educational practices (blog & tweets) An events calendar for OEPS events (workshops, advisory forum, webinars) It will showcase OEP projects which may be hosted elsewhere
  4. We have published some ‘how to’ articles and case studies on the hub We are currently compiling more case studies of open educational practice in action and the OEPS hub encourages users to suggest case studies. OEPS is building an OER ‘Becoming and Open Educator’ and The Open University is building an open guide to making an online course. We’ve been working with organisations to help them create OER for their communities.
  5. The site allows users to create or join communities in the OEPS hub to support each other using OER in practice in their particular context. They can: import existing or newly created Google forums into their OEPS Community space (in future they will also have the option to set up a Drupal forum hosted within the community space on the site), set up a twitter feed to relevant twitter account, pull in links to relevant Open Educational Resources showcase individual projects or resources in their community, Share experiences via a community blog, An events calendar where users can post up events which are of interest to the community.
  6. Existing communities already have discussion spaces – might be on own platforms, which might not be ‘open’ – so a ‘change of practice’ to release their courses or hold discussions in the open Existing Niche communities – terminology/personalities might be a barrier to some joining New communities take time to build – discover space, functionality and discussion – if there is no discussion they won’t stay, if the functionality isn’t what they’d expect they won’t use it – this has been the challenge for phase 1 of the OEPS hub as not all the community functionality planned is available yet. You could join the OEPS community forum – google group. Confidence – it is disheartening if no one comes or stays Moderation responsibilities – may be reluctant to take this on
  7. Online affords opportunities to build new connections between existing groups – often depends on personalities to get things moving New perspectives on existing issues – which can open up new possibilities Open forum can drive up standards – encourage each other to improve OEP, share new ideas. However this can only happen with an agreed code of conduct – the spirit of open debate needs to be respectful even when opposing views New ideas and feedback on ideas, OER created or existing practices Cross sector partnerships can emerge via connections made in an online community opening up new opportunities for collaboration and OER creation
  8. Previously delivered face to face workshops for health care workers about the condition to improve understanding and care Workshop resources included a series of workbooks and activities about the condition, also video and audio assets The resources are pedagogically robust and received positive feedback from learners in the f2f workshops Parkinson’s UK shared the workbooks as open PDFs online Want more people (family of sufferers, other health professionals) to benefit from the resources but cannot deliver the workshops at scale Parkinson’s UK would like the option some kind of informal accreditation for working through the materials (the face to face course has a certificate) Learners can compile a reflection log as they work through the course A series of quizzes are designed to reinforce learning and lead towards gaining the course digital badge Later there are plans to seek formal accreditation for learners who complete the badge and submit a reflection log – so the quizzes have to be fair and robust to be officially recognised by accreditation bodies OEPS has guided the charity through the learning design workshop process to help them identify the audience for the online course and most appropriate tools for delivery OEPS has made use of the Open University’s long standing guided learning expertise to revise the materials for online learning Video footage has been re-shot, as the original footage didn’t always carry the correct permissions for sharing openly online, introduction videos for each section have also been filmed Some images and tables have been re-designed for online animation to make them more engaging, though with accessibility issues kept in mind
  9. Most of the Case studies so far come from early adopters who are well known in the OER world, though we’re beginning to get case studies from those who are new to creating or using OER and want to share their experiences of their first steps. There is a case study of a community exploring the extent to which OER and OEP could help change practice for workplace online learning support. One of the HE case studies is actually about using HE created OER tools for a school environment.
  10. Early adopter/well known explaining to HE unsure of how to do OER and licences and how to introduce an OER policy Lessons learnt: Need for institutional policy to guide/advise people in their use of OER and accompany existing guidelines on practical use of OER
  11. Early adopter/well known how to involve students in creating and sharing OER Lessons learnt: Advice on how to incorporate and support the creation of OER How to use social media in teaching appropriateness of digital materials and learning design; improving digital literacy and ensuring students have relevant skills
  12. New to OER Involved in the building of the course – studied the course materials at home though could also do it at carer centre, all participating carers in this pilot version were asked to participate in a short interview, footage was used in the online stand alone OER (case studies, activities). So she had a peer support group which provided rich case study material for the course. impact of caring counts open course on students Lessons learnt: How to successfully facilitate (from a student perspective) an open course
  13. We are currently compiling more case studies of open educational practice in action and the OEPS hub encourages users to suggest case studies. The lack of FE case studies is partly as a result of the OEPS project mainly concentrating so far on HE and Third sector organisations, we’re now starting to focus on FE. Template to write your own case study to share
