They are the compounds in foods that is needed
to keep a living being alive and to help it grow.
7. Carbohydrates
Its main function is to provide energy to the body.
These are found in our food in the form of sugar and starch.
Cellulose is also a type of carbohydrates which humans can not
digest.
8. Sources of Carbohydrates
Grains such as rice, wheat, maize,
sorghum, sago , beans , peas etc ;
Fruits such as mango, banana,
apple, melons, sugarcane, sugar
beat etc ;
Vegetables like potato are the
sources of carbohydrates.
Bread , Cake , Biscuits, milk ,
portable sugar are also some
sources of carbohydrates.
9. Fats
Fats are also responsible for providing energy to our body. In fact, they provide more
energy than carbohydrates.
Fats act as fuel to our body.
Our body has some advantages of fat deposits in small quantity . It helps the body organs
to protect them from external injury.
It also prevents heat loss from the body.
But, too much fat deposition is harmful for the body .
Fats are obtained either from plants or from animals.
10. Sources of Fats
Fats that are obtained from plants
includes oils such as groundnut oil, olive
oil, coconut oil, mustard oil, sesame oil
etc.
Walnuts, nuts , avocado are also some
examples of plant fats.
Fats that are obtained from animals
include Dairy foods – such as butter,
cream, ghee, regular-fat milk and
cheese.
Meat – such as fatty cuts of beef, pork
and lamb, processed meats like salami,
sausages and the skin on chicken.
11. Proteins
Proteins performs the very essential function of
helping our body grow and repair itself.
They help in building new tissues. They also account
for tough, fibrous nature of hair, and nails for the
structure of muscles.
12. Sources of Proteins
Milk, Fish , Meat , Cheese, , Eggs etc. are the main
sources of animal proteins.
Vegetable proteins can be obtained from legumes
including pulses and beans.
Food containing proteins are called “ body-building”
foods.
