The mouth starts everything moving in the digestive system. Saliva begins to break down food in the mouth as it is chewed and then swallowed. The esophagus transports food to the stomach through peristalsis. The stomach further breaks food down with gastric juices and churning before emptying into the small intestine. Nutrients are then absorbed into the bloodstream in the small intestine over several hours. The liver processes nutrients from the blood before waste moves to the large intestine and is expelled as feces.
