The students conducted an experiment to simulate the human digestive system. They "ate" a snack of banana, peas and bread which they mashed with their teeth and mixed with saliva. This moved down the esophagus to the stomach where stomach acid and enzymes began to digest it. After 2-3 hours it passed into the small intestine where bile and pancreatic enzymes continued breaking it down and nutrients were absorbed into the bloodstream through villi. The leftover waste then moved into the large intestine, rectum and was finally excreted, demonstrating the entire digestive process.
