Your digestive system breaks down food so your body's cells can use it to make energy. Digestion begins in the mouth where chewing breaks down food. The food then moves through the esophagus into the stomach where muscles squeeze it into smaller pieces and chemicals further break it down. Next, the food moves to the small intestine where nutrients from the food are absorbed into the bloodstream to nourish cells. Any remaining food then moves to the large intestine where water is absorbed before the waste leaves the body.
