We have always heard of the cliché phrase: “sex sells.” How do we design in a world that is intentionally and unintentionally powered by sexually-biased?
As designers, we are trained to look at the world around us with a curiosity and inquisition. If we take a design research approach to looking at gender, what will we find?
In this session, we will be taking a deeper look at how gender bias is embedded in the modern society. We will explore different examples of gender prejudice and mental molds within the digital realm. Looking at different case studies of user experiences crafted with focuses on sex and gender. Discussing the definition for boundaries of sexism and vulgarity in different ux examples.

Countless people in technology want to use their skills to help others. However, creating a digital product that improves society is harder than it sounds. The successful use of technology in new contexts requires more research, testing, and time than most would like to admit. Countless social good hackathons have been organized, yet many products created during these events fail to become anything more than a mention in a recap article.
In this talk, I described my process of creating SenseU, a mobile sex education game that utilizes a popular form of communication: instant messaging. Using my project as a case study, I highlighted ways that the current state of designing for social good can be improved. Attendees learned ways that technology can successfully help others as well as tips for launching an interactive experience created for social good.

I was due on stage in 10 minutes and I was totally uncertain if I could do it.
This was me yesterday before I was due to speak at Charity Comms' Psychology of Communications conference.
My entire presentation was a risk. I was going to ask the audience of senior charity sector leaders to do things that I was pretty sure they would find difficult.
I would be rewarding those who worked with me and doing my utmost to persuade others, again and again, who were not yet ready to get involved.
The last time I had presented publicly was in front of an audience of people I knew well. But this was different. Would it work? I had no idea.
Eventually, I went on, starting with a line about how working for yourself is like being a solo polar explorer. Moments of incredible beauty, followed by realising you are surrounded by deep crevasses. I got a laugh and relaxed.
Throughout, people shared their views on the charity sector, by moving up and down an imaginary line in the auditorium - depending on propositions I gave them (and the reactions of other audience members).
I ran another experiment, trialling seven different approaches to get people to sign up to my email newsletter - Top Tips for Tough Problems - all about innovation and charities (www.outrageousimpact.co.uk/tips/)
For those who wouldn't join the email, and were open to it, I had discussions with them on the microphone about what might persuade them. The ability to alter the frequency of emails, sharing this content on LinkedIn and being clearer about what was in the email, persuaded a few.
In the end, 60% of the audience joined the email list and received sweets, a chance to sit in a 'winners' circle', got their name on a plaque on the wall, approval from colleagues, applause and more.
Innovation is about building something new to try and improve lives. It might work. Or flop. But as long as you learn from it, it can never be a failure. That was the key lesson I got yesterday.

When designing new services / products / experience, designers often start with the user needs or technical feasibilities. When designers ask “why are we doing this”, we often shy away from the business reasons. If we try to design with a holistic view of everything, shouldn’t we understand the business needs as well?
Taking a step away from the traditional design thinking, this session will dive into business design and stretch our design thinking muscle to business thinking. Business design brings in the commercial prospect to form a more complete approach to solving complex problems.
In this session, we will look at examples of hands-on case study of how to integrate commercial thinking into design projects. How to balance the different requirements and needs from all angles? What are the different toolkits that can be used for designers to start thinking about business more? And maybe most importantly, how can designers stop being scared of numbers.

In this session, we want to explore what business design means. How to use what we know, as designers, to build stronger businesses? As we continue to adapt design methodologies and systems thinking to a business context, what other manifestations that will evolve? How can design thinking be leveraged in even the most straight-laced silos of a business such as Human Resources and Finance? How do we give design thinking the space it needs in the face of traditional business practice? And most importantly, how do we use our existing design thinking knowledge, to design businesses?

In a May 9, 2024 paper, Juri Opitz from the University of Zurich, along with Shira Wein and Nathan Schneider form Georgetown University, discussed the importance of linguistic expertise in natural language processing (NLP) in an era dominated by large language models (LLMs).
The authors explained that while machine translation (MT) previously relied heavily on linguists, the landscape has shifted. “Linguistics is no longer front and center in the way we build NLP systems,” they said. With the emergence of LLMs, which can generate fluent text without the need for specialized modules to handle grammar or semantic coherence, the need for linguistic expertise in NLP is being questioned.
